David with electrical webbing to the wall and nearly kills him before Griffin blasts a flamethrower Griffin jumps to Millie's apartment and returns turns the machine that keeps the scar open however fiction novel Jumper by Steven good screenwriter Jim mes was hired to rewrite an adapted screenplay by davidus Goya for however lmon desired another rewrite and Simon kinberg assisted in completing the script for lemon said about using the novel for developing the script this is 100% Steven good story it's just reinvented as a movie five in an interview good revealed that he approved of the deviations from the novel five before filming was to begin the studio announc plans to develop a Trilogy based on the novel's premise six while other films tend to use only one storyboard artist jumper required six who each worked on an individual action sequence the artists were given specific instruction on the rules of the teleportation used in the film to ensure accuracy in the storyboarding one of them Rob mallum reflected on the instructions I was just thinking how would a guy that can teleport fight so you were really pushing yourself to try to think of inventive cool spectacular ways that you could use this jumping talent that these characters have seven casting in April 26 actors as Tom sturd Teresa Palmer and Jamie Bell were cast for jumper with Sturridge in the lead role at the following July actor Samuel Jackson was cast as Roland Cox with producer Simon kinberg rewriting the original screenplay draft by goyer principal photography was scheduled to take place in Tokyo Rome Toronto and New York nine production was stopped in June 26 after producer Tom Rothman told lion the lead is 18 wouldn't the movie be better if he was 25 you have a huge movie here and adults won't go and see an 18-year-old they'll consider it a children's movie you could make a bigger movie than that 10 lien agreed on casting older actors for furthering the Romantic aspect of the film 11 in August actor Hayden Christensen replaced Sturridge in the lead role as David just two weeks before the beginning of shooting as the studio became concerned about not having a more prominent actor in their Trio of young Stars after Christenson was recast for the lead role lemon replaced Palmer with Rachel Bilson filming in September 26 jumper was filmed at various locations in Peterboro Ontario and principal photography began in Toronto in October in December 26 lemon negotiated with the Rome film commission for rare access to film for 3 Days in the Coliseum the scene in the Coliseum was originally written for the pantheon where exterior shots were also filmed the crew was required to keep equipment off the ground by using harnesses and had to rely on natural life for filming 16 filming took place for 45 minutes in the morning and in the evening so as not to disturb the public during the amphitheater throughout the day 17 in order to maximize the short period for filming Force dtic cams was set up to ensure time was not wasted in reloading the camera tenna visual effects supervisor explained how visual effects were needed for various aspects after filming there were three kinds of shots there were shots where they were able to get most of what they needed in the Coliseum sik itself and then there were shots on a set that needed extensions beyond the limits of the set and then there were shots where we needed to create the Coliseum basically from scratch 18 after filming in Rome scenes were filmed in Toronto during December 2006 to January 2007 and wrapped at the Canadian location on January 19th on January 26th in Toronto 56-year-old David Richie a set dresser was fatally struck by Frozen debris while dismantling an outdoor set in wintry conditions another worker was injured and was sent to a hospital with serious head and shoulder injuries 20 after Toronto the cast and crew traveled to Tokyo the film scenes one scene required over 30 shoots as the scene could only be filmed in between traffic light changes 10 as a result of director lmon insisting Christenson perform his own stunts the actor injured his hands split open his ear and developed a hyper dilated pupil that required hospital care while filming various scenes in February 27 the next filming site was set up at Gallup Park in an Arbor Michigan 60 students from the nearby hiron High School were cast as extras for the film 22 since additional filming was required of the area 20 other students were used for a day of filming in September 23 alt together filming took place in 20 cities in 14 countries 24 visual effects the New Zealand visual effects Studio w a digital was initially selected to assist in creating a preview clip for the 2007 comic convention 18 the Studio's 100 employees later developed the visual effects for 300 of the 600 shots in the film in total there are more than 100 jump in the film and each jump was modified based on the distance and location the characters jumped 26 the jumps were developed using nuke and Shake software 18 many including those to Big Ben and the Sphinx were created with Meer 26 wers VFX supervisor Eric winquist explained how the visual effects of the jumps were created the concept of what a jump looks like changed and evolved a little over the course of post- production there are shots in the film that use still array footage but not in the same way that we saw in The Matrix The Matrix was largely about stopping time whereas this was about using slow shutter speeds on those still array cameras to end up with a streaky motion blurred image as the perspective was changing which is a pretty interesting look 26 other visual effect Studios that assisted with the film include hydro's digital domain and pixel magic 18 LightWave 3D was also used for some of the movie scenes release jumper was released on February 14th 2008 by 20th Century Fox recept critical response on Rotten Tomatoes the lays foundations on which a great franchise could be built 31 Australian film reviewer David stra stated that this film represents a new Watershed in the history of the cinema because it's got no plot Wii consoles the storyline focuses on the character Griffin as he attempts to avenge the death of his parents Nicholas longano of the video game publisher Brash entertainment stated from the very first script read we knew this had to be made into a game the teleportation elements make for some very compelling gameplay 42 the game was released on February 12th 2008 2 days before the film's wide release 43 gam rankings gave the Xbox 360 version of the game a 28% positive rating based on 12 reviews 44 the PlayStation 2 version received a 35% positive rating while the Wii version had a 23 % positive rating 44 demon Hatfield of iron reviewed the Xbox 360 version and gave it a negative review low production values monotonous gameplay and lackluster visuals make this a story you can jump past 45 novels Steven good the author of Jumper and reflex also wrote jumper Griffin story as a te in for the film The Novel released on August 21st 27 focuses on the character Griffin which was created by screenwriter David es Goya speciic specifically for the film because Griffin had not appeared in the two prior novel's good developed jumper Griffin story as a backstory of the character's Early Childhood before the film when writing the novel good had to work closely with the producer of the film to ensure that the story did not conflict with the film's premise 46 on press released a graphic novel jumper jump scars that portrays several backstories related to the film 47 the novel was released on February 13th 28 one day before the film's wide release a publisher for on press commented on the te to the film stating the world that was being built around these characters was so well realized and the mythology so interesting that other stories about this conflict would be plentiful and add to what the filmmakers were Building 47 the novel was written by Nono def Philippi and Christina Weir and illustrated by Brian hurt in November 2016 the rist rated covers of the scaliger pleasant novel series by Derek Landy done by Tom peral to commend the series 10th anniversary had its characters modeled off of real life celebrity figures with the last teleporter Fletcher ran on the cover of the faceless ones visually based on promotional stills of Hayden Christensen as David Rice from jumper potential sequel author Steven Good's second novel in the jumper series reflex was published in 24 by 2014 two more good novels in the series have been published prior to the film's 2008 release Hayden kristance and reflected on the possibility of one or more sequels this has definitely been set up in a way that will allow for more films and Doug has been careful to make sure that he's created characters that will have room to grow 11 Lucas faster during production of the film stated in an interview the ideas got so large that they really couldn't fit into you know one or two movies they needed to evolve over at least three movies so we planned the story out over three movies and then we sliced it up in such a way as to leave room for the other two movies five in response to the film's box office performance director Doug lemon has spoken of his ideas for a sequel among them are that jumpers can reach other planets and travel in time as well as their capacity for Espionage he has also stated that Rachel bilson's character would learn how to jump hinted by David falling unconscious before the jump from the river to the library just as in good sequel reflex 48 however as of 2023 no further updates were given for a sequel film review there you have the premise for Doug lemon's jumper the prequel of movie so silly you may find yourself giggling helplessly even as you wish you could magically transp yourself almost anywhere else in the world but where you are in front of the screen showing it let me jump back and correct that the title proper is jumper but the port for the sequel is installed into the epilog and there is one inviable rule no girls in the lair does this make any sense to you no good then it's not just me fortunately I can't risk giving away too much of the story because there isn't one there's just this guy named David mostly played by 26-year-old Hayden Christensen but sometimes by 90-year-old Max theot though the use of separate actors is Superfluous since one doesn't look appreciably older than the other who can jump from say New York to Tokyo instantaneously that's all in the prologue David has a crush on this girl named Millie mostley the ox Rachel Bilson but there's a bully named Biff irar intirely Jesse James poor David lives with his mean alcoholic dad Henry portrait of a serial killer Michael Rooker as William in a room with posters of Einstein and Kurt Cobain he's got to get out of this place an arbor that is he's trapped so he jumps it's every kid's fantasy find yourself in a bad situation and pop right out of it it's every Don Juan's fantasy you can pick up a hot blonde babe in a bar have sex with her and disappear immediately afterwards it's every travel agent's nightmare you can go anywhere in a blink picnic on the head of the Sphinx hang out with the minute hand on Big Ben as if you were Marry Poppins and here's the thing nobody notices sometimes when David jumps he busts up the walls or floors and generates a lot of dust or water damage sometimes he doesn't but either way nobody pays any attention it's scary David can plop into a throng of extras anywhere in the world the streets of Tokyo or a London pub and except for this one kid at the Detroit airport not one person bats an eyelash and if it doesn't matter to them why should it to us it's implied that the jumper may have to have visited a place before he can jump to it but maybe not so never mind when such Miracles can can occur any time without reason or explanation then life and plots are meaningless jumper may as well be subtitled the trouble with CGI anything can happen and usually does but So What by the time Mace Windu shows up with white hair and a light as of Samuel L Jackson as Roland oh forget it Billy Elliott Jamie Bell as Griffin explains that since medieval times I believe there's one in shamberg the paladins have been hunting the jumpers it's been going on for centuries and no one seems to know or care why the paladins were apparently named after Imperial guards of ancient Rome and later High officials in the Catholic church and the jumpers are just called jumpers nor does the movie explain its own movie references like why a skyscraper plummet from the Cohen Brothers the hudsucker proxy should suddenly collide with the public pool scene from little children or is it the Baby Ruth scene from kadash Shack because it's totally random that's why in a movie review it's usually incumbent upon the critic to make at least one mention of the movie as a movie The Cinematic touch that's stuck with me is when David returns to an arbor after an 8year absence and has a Marty fly moment when he discovers that Millie has become wait for at a bid at least she's not his mom but what's happened to his mom is even more awful and inexplicable there's an oddly framed shot where David and Millie are talking across the bar and in between them are at least three extras watching an offscreen football game you know this is something I say a lot but I don't think it ever fit as much as with this film jumper could be the post child of how it looks to have a truly great idea executed in such an average way you almost get unreasonably angry because you can easily imagine a much better story with such an intriguing premise but most importantly different actors in it I hate to do this but our protagonists were either misdirected or not cast well jumper is a film based on a really simple yet great premise some people can teleport and live among us from here you can take this into a variety of ways you can develop a world with its own rules a a John Wick franchise you can play into the gods live among us thing that became popular within our current pop culture you can take a philosophical or you can make an action movie about a guy who does whatever he wants and he's a dick about it he behaves like a dick even to people who he supposedly cares about because if you strip it down that's what this film is don't get me wrong this movie isn't bad by any means some action sequences are shot entertainingly the film is under 90 minutes so it never manages to bore you and it's full of young sexy people they unfortunately aren't great in this and have no chemistry yes I'm talking about the leading Duo Hayden stensson and Rachel Bilson let me start with Hayden because if there is somebody who might be the unluckiest guy in the history of Hollywood who still has a career at him most people think he can't act because of his performance in the Star Wars prequels and then others have seen him in shattered blast 2003 or awake 2007 where he proves there is something in him if you haven't seen either of these films I strongly recommend both because they convince me that he's more than capable of acting unfortunately in jumper he isn't great I understand part part of it is the unlik ability of the character he's portraying but he can't sell it he comes across as obnoxious rather than the anti-hero we should be rooting for as for Rachel Bilson I have never watched any of her TV shows so I am not familiar enough with her to judge whether or not she is a great actress but in this she wasn't I wouldn't be surprised if the material wouldn't allow her to do her best work but this was rough to watch and there was Zero chemistry in between them the whole movie relies on you believing that they were meant to be ever since they were children but if the actors can't sell it on the screen the audience won't buy it at least I didn't as to the other actors Samuel L Jackson did his standard performance that was fine nothing special but nothing that would stand out either Jamie Bell could have been an interesting character had we known a bit more about him or had he gotten more screen time and don't let yourself be fooled by seeing names like Diane Lane or Kristen Stewart Diane has about 5 minutes of screen time and Kristen about 2 minutes the main thing about this idea was the unfulfilled potential and again I know I keep mentioning this point a lot too but this might have been too short I can easily see this being turned into a TV show with a better cast Better World building establishing rules and then we might have something on our hands that works think about it teleporting is easily one of the most wished for superpowers every time there is a debate about what's the best superpower teleporting cracks the top three on most people's list and it is easy to see why being able to go anywhere at any time saving so much time not being stuck in traffic being able to go on holiday at second notice seeing your relatives or friends literally anytime you want anybody can imagine what they would do with it and here lies this film's issue since this is such a simple yet intriguing concept we all have imagined what we would have done having this ability and I don't know about you but this film barely scratched the surface overall jumper almost felt lazy it feels like you're generic Hollywood Blockbuster where somebody came up with a great idea but everything else was done on autopilot from casting main characters with no chemistry to barely defining the rules establishing any World building this entire film feels like it's been done with most people half asleep it ticks almost every single box so it doesn't bore you and when the movie is over you feel like there was something great hidden there but it leaves you wanting more but not in the Good Sense where you are craving for a sequel more like in I need to know more about this world how it works some history behind it just give me anything this is where jumper fail to deliver I read the 1992 Steven good novel which was fairly streamlined science fiction take a precept that a young man can teleport and then play the game of figuring out how things might evolve from there when he's out of cash he figures out he can jump into a bank vault when he has an apartment door that doesn't open rather than having the super fix it he just uses it as added security and so on jumper the book is pretty undated jumper of the movie is directed by the producer of the born movies and is a flashy action movie with Sam Jackson as the bad guy and Hayden christensson and the main character in the movie unlike the book which had no evil organization there is an ancient Cult of bad people religious zealots who hunt jumpers of which there are many and slay them to do this they use strange shock batons which lash out cables that capture their targets tase them so they can't teleport away and hold them until the guys can use ceremonial knives to execute them apparently they have not heard of bullets also in the movie unlike the book which had no other jumpers there is Jamie Bell who plays Griffin one of several a teamup griffin is mentally Disturbed at best and wage an incredibly inept war against Jackson who is not fooling around except for using the weird cable guns that's fooling around as far as I can tell I think the driving force behind jumper was the director's wish to film in exotic locations the best of which is inside the Coliseum under the conditions that no equipment could be placed on the ground that they only had two HRS per day and used natural light I bet that was a blast they also got to do Tokyo and even an arba beyond that though I'm not sure they had a lot in mind really mostly just some setup for jumper 2 the book sequel was called reflex the problem with jumper is not in the details Hayden is a strong lead Jackson has Charisma even when his character is purely two-dimensional and doesn't make a lot of sense they have religious objections to teleporting but have a machine that allows them to teleport the locations are indeed Sumptuous and the action courtesy of Simon kinberg X3 mister and Mrs Smith is pretty crackling no the problems are not in the wide angles they in the details the movie asks several questions will the main character David Unite with his high school sweetheart what happened to his mom will he make it in the world who is Jackson anyway and answers them all in a pat flat manner Hayden isn't impossible to care about but he's a bit of a cold fish at one point he watches people trapped in a flood zone on TV with the announcer saying that it will take a miracle to reach them heo surfing again the character Arc of him becoming less self-centered is never solved the other characters only have first names which while not meaningful in and of itself is pretty telling since they only have one dimension to the rest of them too the whole electrical batan fighting while teleporting thing is visually well done but takes Center Stage when it should be a throwaway in Cameron's T2 the Terminator does things like grow a third arm to fly the copter and shoot and turn around by morphing during the battle this is as it should be understated when watching the movie I felt like it was all sugar and no meat ultimately jumper is a big some movie that came out in the winter it's loud flashy and dumb it has reasonable star power and good location shots the ento thehin money shot is worth whatever they paid for it it's a bit like The Wizard of Oz Trio though in that it doesn't have the guts to take real chances it lacks heart in terms of characters that we really connect to and it um isn't too smart here is a new rule for how I review movies if I'm watching a seemingly serious cify action flick and the first thing that pops into my mind is a song written and sung by Matt Stone and TR Parker that is not a good thing the seemingly serious cfy action question if Fox upcoming release jumper and the song Stone and Parker's ' 8s action movie inspired ballad Montage from the film Team America World Police the reason for this momentary lapse in concentration seemed to stem from the fact that jumper felt more like one big action Montage than it did like an actual film based on a series of books from author Steven good jumper is easily one of the most frustrating movie agoing experiences of 28 so far frustrating because of its brilliant Concepts centering on the lives of unique people who can literally jump through wormholes and go anywhere in the world instantly frustrating also because it was adapted by a riding team led by David S goyer who has had some really solid outings including 2005 as Batman Begins and increasingly frustrating because it was directed by Doug lmon who successfully delivered both the born identity and Mis and Mrs Smith two films that I personally enjoyed the hell out of at the core of this frustration is a very stale lackluster performance from Hayden Christensen who seems completely out of place as David Rice the jumper who we follow through the entire film rice is a high school learner who discovered the fact that he could teleport and then used it to run away from a broken home he also used it to rob banks paying for a nice Manhattan apartment and an over thtop bachelor lifestyle that is until he is finally Tracked Down by Roland Samuel El Jackson a member of a long-standing religious group known as paladins the jumper Hunters Roland will stop but nothing to track and kill David even if that means offing his father Michael Rooker or his childhood love Millie Rachel Bilson we learn all of this in a rush at the beginning of the film with a poorly scripted series of voiceovers from Christenson that leads to you guested a montage and besides the existence of some wicked cool action sequences toward the end of the film that is what this film feels like for too much of the film's 88 minute runtime the audience is left to feel like it is getting the short version of the story left with a feeling that this film is part of some something bigger something much more in-depth and interesting but while the story's development seems incredibly rushed if you allow yourself to make peace with the fact that there will be things you just won't understand about the plot you just may find plenty of things to enjoy about the film one thing is the performance from Jamie Bell who plays Griffin another jumper who comes along to befriend and ultimately help David along in his battle to save his life as well the action sequences in the film are as brilliant as the concept itself the ability of the jumpers to transport not only the themselves but objects they touching leads to some pretty cool special effects shots think about it this way they literally throw a bus at Sam Jackson in the middle of the Sahara Desert how is that not awesome it is awesome a bright shining glimmer of awesome amidst a movie experience that is anything but all that jumper has in creativity and Innovative concept is squandered with Messy storytelling and a stale performance from its leading man in the end the film feels more like the bean burrito of movies in 2008 when when you first begin to eat it it tastes great but it goes in and out of you so quickly that it's like you never ate it at all and a few hours later all you can think about was the bad part of the experience the part where you found yourself singing to the porcelain gods for 20 minutes it's impossible for Outsiders to know who deserves most of the blame for this Doug its director Doug Limon its three screenwriters its multiple producers or the various Studio Executives who might have done far too much meddling or not nearly enough whatever the case jumper or a barely coherent genre M Mash about a guy who transports himself across the globe at will is of interest only because it revisits a theme that Mr lmon has explored in films like the born identity and if reports about his troubled Productions are true speaks to his own reputation as an escape artist the character who wiggles out of trouble the trouble here starts when a likable High School loser David Rice Max theot discovers that he can do an end run around the SpaceTime Continuum teleporting from here to their faster than Dorothy can clicker sparkling red shoes before long he's zipping from Detroit to Tokyo and into bank vaults and has transformed into a materialist slacker now played by a Som and Hayden Christensen whose rooms are filled with goodies and walls are papered with images of his fav jump spots one minute he's cruising a blonde Sil in London the next he's hanging with a sphinx in Egypt it's all good except that it's all bad from the sublate dialogue to the chaotic Direction and heavily Ed points in between then you know something happens in this case the something is mostly Samuel L Jack who is a mysterioso Avenger arrives barking his lines and wearing the latest addition to what has become a notorious collection of extreme hair pieces and looks snow wide and close cropped Mr Jackson's hair in this film dominates its every scene it's louder than the predictably vable actor rising out of the visual and narrative clutter like a beacon it glows it shouts it entertains it earns its keep it also suggest that someone here has a sense of humor as does the casting of the persuasively thuggish Michael Rooker Henry portrait of a serial killer and the woful misused Diane Lane as David's estranged parents luckily for Miss Lane her character doesn't get much screen time largely because she appears to be on hand only to help humanize David to counterbalance the brutal father with the sentimentalized mother she's as disposable as the pretty bland thing Rachel Bilson who tags along with David for a while and has been written into the screenplay for all the reasons female characters are usually written into male coming off at stories namely she looks good in her underwear and establishes the hero's heter sexuality Miss Bilson fills out her bra nicely but is nowhere as seductive as Jamie Bell who is a British jumper called Griffin gives the film a jolt of energy along with a heartbeat when he jumps so does the film at school in Anne Arbor Michigan 15-year-old David Rice presents Millie Harris with the gift of a snow globe but bully Mark Kabal throws it out onto a frozen overa River venturing out to get the globe David falls through the thin ice instead of drowning David is startled to find suddenly himself in the middle of a library David realizes that he has the ability to mentally teleport himself to anywhere that he is thinking about leaving home he sets up an apartment in New York and teleports into a bank vault to take all the money he wants 8 years later and David is enjoying a lavish lifestyle teleporting wherever he wants in the world the mysterious Roland then suddenly turns up in David's apartment Roland knows about David's abilities and has tools that can lasso and prevent him teleporting but David makes an escape David goes back to renew his relationship with Millie who believed he was dead he takes her on a flight to Rome but once there finds himself pursued by Roland's men in the midst of this he is aided by Griffin a fellow jumper Griffin explains that Roland is a member of the paladins a mysterious organization that is hunted and eliminated the jumpers throughout the ages David presses a reluctant Griffin to help him as Roland targets Millie as a means of capturing him jumper was a high-profile release that came with a good deal of talent array behind it in the director's chair there was Doug lmon a smart edgy director who is always worth watching with films like swingers 1996 go 1999 the born identity 2002 and Mr and Mrs Smith 2005 behind him and a fine subsequent Venture into science of fiction with Edge of Tomorrow 2014 and the young adult SF film chaos walking 2021 plus also produced The George RR Martin TV series nightflyers 2018 the trio of writers on the script includes some strong names including David es Goya one of the finest genre writers around with works like blade 1998 and sequels dark city 1998 and Batman Begins 2005 under his belt Jim HS who wrote Fight Club 1999 and Simon kinberg who did write Mr and Mrs Smith for lemon although also has the black marks of xXx State of the unions the next level 2005 and X-Men the Last Stand 26 against him and subsequently became a regular writer producer on the X-Men films it is a considerable surprise then with so many impressive names in the creative mix as to why jumper ends up as such a non-film there is a semi-interesting concept to the film indeed David almost seems like a character ripe for recruitment into the X-Men franchise or as one of TVs Heroes twz and 610 on the other hand there is limited potential to watching people spending 88 Minutes teleporting around the world the unfortunate thing is that jumper does nothing with the concept after I saw the trailer which sets up the concept youth discovers he can teleport anywhere then finds he is being pursued by a nemesis I was waiting to see what twists or conceptual spins the various script writers would put on the idea the great disappointment about jumper is that that is it the entire film can be summed up by watching the trailer Hayden Christenson stopped by Paladin Samuel L Jackson even then jumper could have worked if Doug lmon had made it into a decent action vehicle or kept the suspense tightly ratcheted as he did in the born identity however neither turns out to be the case there are numerous scenes with people teleporting back and forth to novel locations some cute scenes where Hayden Christensen and Jamie Bell are teleporting about in a sports car in a busy climactic fight between jumpers and paladins but the sequences lack any big wow factor and fail to stir the adrenaline anywh the script fails to deliver any interesting twists while the major suspense situation that drives the bulk of the film Hayden Christensen putting Rachel Bilson on a flight from Rome back to Ann Arbor and racing to prevent Samuel Jackson from getting to her in the 8 hours before the plane touches down feels a situation that has been rived by the script writers moreover the characters seem either Bland or severely underdeveloped to his CR Hayden Christensen emerges with far more handsome Charisma and Screen presence than he did in either of his universally derided performances in the Star Wars prequels however the romance between he and Rachel Bilson coasts by without the slightest engagement it is hard to buy her as a character one minute she is doing a double take when a guy from her childhood that she thought was dead suddenly turns up then without even the slightest explanation he persuades her with in the space of a few minutes to abandon her job and fly with him to wrome the film's greatest credibility gap though is surely that she continues to accompany a guy who for much of the film only answers every question and doubt she has with an evasion this credulity is stretched even more when it comes to the characters played by Jamie Bell and Samuel Jackson about whom nothing is explained at all the screenplay keeps hinting at a larger Mythic structure not unin to the secret Wars of the ages that we see in the Highlander and underworld series exactly who the paladins are and for what reason they perceive the jumpers to be a threat is never explained there is no explanation of why only some people inherit the jumper abilities when Hayden Christensen reconciles with his mother Diane Lane at the end she talks about how she had to abandon him because she was a paladin and saw that he was a jumper this implies that being a paladin is genetically inherited but nothing is ever done to explain what the difference between a paladin and a normal human being is that the bulk of Jumper's premise hangs on the these questions it is deeply frustrating that it chooses to do nothing in terms of explaining any of its background it feels like a film that coasts by solely on a series of dramatic cues demanded by market research handsome star A Touch of Romance flashy special effects in congruous use of international locations and has excised all other demands beyond that the other major quibble I have is a scientific one I can grant the film The adequate suspension of disbelief to accept the idea of teleportation as a psychic ability theil STM never goes into explaining how the process works which is probably wise the most amusing side unintentional effect would come in that different parts of the Earth rotate at different speeds the Earth might be likened to a spinning record or CD where the outside of the disc must travel at a faster velocity than the inner Edge in order to have the same number of rotations similarly with the Earth's rotation an object traveling at the equator has a higher relative velocity to an object at one of the poles a person at the equator travels about 1,500 ft per second while someone at the pole is hardly moving at all thus whenever Hayden Christenson teleports from say Egypt which is near the equator to say an arbor or London which are quite a bit further north he would end up with considerable Surplus inertial velocity one calculates that a jump from Egypt to Michigan would leave haen Christensen with around 350 M brow extra velocity which would probably be enough to propel him through the wall of Rachel bilson's apartment and into the next one two movie review coffee in Paris lunch in the maldiv kicking back in the afternoon on the forehead of the Sphinx it's all in a day's work for David Rice a jumper who has only to visualize his final destination to teleport there it all started the day David accidentally plunged through thin ice on a river in Suburban Michigan instead of drowning he suddenly found himself at the an Arbor Public Library did I just teleport he wanders amid the stairs of startled bookworms soon he Masters his power and Embraces a world of endless possibility David trades in his truly depressing home life which includes a Gruff relationship with his beers willing father for a shot at the good life Bank robbery's fund a move to New York City and a lifestyle of unfed headism hooking up with beautiful women surfing in the South Pacific exit as far as David is concerned he's in heaven why settle on one place he asks when you can have the whole world until that is a mysterious man named Roland shows up at his Swank apartment to put him on notice did you think it could go on like this forever Roland asks living like this with no consequences there are always consequences David escapes Roland's first attack then promptly looks up an old high school Crush named Millie and whisks her off to Rome once there David meets another jumper Griffin who informs him that his power comes with a significant downside Roland David discovers is a paladin one of an ancient band of religious zealots whose sole purpose is to exterminate jumpers and Griffin informs him fail also kill anyone who gets in their way including unsuspecting girlfriends who have been clued in as Roland and his fellow paladins track David and Griffin Millie unwittingly becomes the bait in a deadly game of cat and mouse teleportation style positive elements though he's cast as the villain and acts like one Roland is right when he admonishes David that there are always consequences for our actions David has some serious character flaws as well see but he does try to do right by Millie first by sending her back to America without him in an attempt to protect her then by coming to her rescue after she falls into Roland's clutches when they in high school an awkward slightly geeky David gives Millie a snow globe as a gift she's not really interested in him at that point but she responds kindly to him as an adult Milly evinces a desire for honesty in their fast moving relationship when she asks David not to lie to her David's father William eventually tries to reopen the door of communication with his son and tells David that he's free to come home anytime he wants William loyally tries to protect his son from Roland by refusing to divulge information about him and he pays for that loyalty with his life spoiler warning we learn that David's mother is actually a paladin who left her family so that she wouldn't have to kill her young son she warns him about the Paladin's approach in one scene and offers him time to escape in another both David and Griffin come from families where they had little or no adult supervision thus it's possible if we really stretch things to interpret their immature choices as a consequence of poor home lives spiritual elements before kill a jumper roll and tells him you're an Abomination only God should have the power to be all places at all times a line he repeats to David later Griffin tells David that the paladins have hunted jumpers for centuries and that they are motivated by religious extremism he says that these religious nut jobs were responsible for the Inquisition and the witch hunts and he believes they'll kill everybody Roland is convinced that the jumper power has a corrupting influence on them that fail always use their powers selfishly which in fact David has already begun to do spoiler warning David has the chance to kill Roland but he spares the Paladin in an attempt to convince him that he isn't thoroughly evil sexual content David meets a woman at a London bar and later ends up in bed with her it's implied that he slept with her when we see him get out of bed shirtless and see her apparently naked form strategically draped with a sheet in Rome we watch as David and Millie begin to pull one another's clothes off he's again shirtless and we see her in her bra and pants as they kiss and po at each other that scene ends before f are completely undressed but it's again implied that fave had sex Millie also wears Cleaver deriving outfits violent content easily the most brutal scene in the movie is one in which Roland dispatches an unnamed Jumper by stabbing him with a huge knife a violent act that we fully witness elsewhere the Paladin's trap jumpers using a club likee projectile that's connected to electrified coils of Steel rope the electric current restrains the jumpers and keeps them from teleporting enough for the paladins to kill them multiple fist fights are chalk full of savage hits and kicks David gets tossed out of the upper level of his apartment onto a table below Griffin unleashes a flamethrower on a group of paladins we see the body of one of them in another scene in other violent moments David falls through the ice and is swept Downstream unable to penetrate the ice above him later he teleports most of Millie's apartment with the minute into a river Fay are both temporarily trapped underwater before getting free while turning to teleport David hits a tree Griffin and David teleport into a fierce gun and tank battle in Cheta where David leaves his friend in Tangled in electrical wires because he refuses to help rescue Millie Griffin steals a Mercedes Benz by driving it through a showroom window in Tokyo then proceeds to Kine through town repeatedly teleporting the car through traffic to avoid accidents himself while causing many of them in his wake he also manages to pull a double-decker bus through a teleportation portal in a failed attempt to kill Roland Griffin's philosophy toward the paladins could be summarized as get them before they get us crude or profane language there's one fword and six or seven swords characters take guards in Jesus names in vain two or three times each milder words include a handful of uses of Ag and want to be tired people blurred out holy crap drug and alcohol content the woman David picks up at an English bar as drinking a gin and tonic he orders tankor and tonic Millie works at a bar she and David each have a Budweiser while another old acquaintance of theirs is obviously drunk David's father is usually shown with a beer in hand one scene shows him finishing a beer and opening another other negative elements after stealing a lot of money from a bank David asks the audience in voiceover narration what would you have done I figured i' pay it back someday right David consistently acts as if the world owes him whatever he feels like taking that applies to cash women surfboards and much more that thing is reinforced throughout David breaks into the Coliseum in Rome to show Millie areas that are closed to the public his rationale nothing is off limits Griffin's attitude seems pretty similar as evidenced by his willingness to steal a car for the sole purpose of going on a crazy Joy Ride elsewhere Griffin urinates on a wall we see him from behind and David gets into a fight as an adult with the jock who pested him in high school he ultimately teleports his old Nemesis into a bank vault and leaves him there where he's later arrested Ed conclusion lots of guys in particular will think jumper looks like a lot of fun after watching its trailer I did alas this is a film in search of a plot and a purpose and as it turns out a moral compass Hayden Christensen who plays David Zips this way and that through teleportation wormholes but the story lacks much that might set it apart from the scores of special effects driven actioners that have preceded it still it's the hedonistic consequen ofree message that is the real deal killer as mentioned Roland pompously in tones that there are always consequences for our choices but David never faces any by the end he's got the girl and banished the bad guy his repeated thefts his immoral sexual stints and his self-absorbed anything goes attitude are never challenged forget Peter Parker's Maxim with great power comes great responsibility with David Rice it's more like with great power comes great opportunity for me here's what he actually says this thing that just happened it could set me free H freedom to him means getting whatever he wants on his own terms never mind legality morality and responsibility that message is perhaps most clear when we see him watching a news story about people drowning in a flash flood it feels like a setup for him to go save some of them but nno no self-sacrificial heroics here and I'm supposed to like this character why because Hayden Christensen once played Anakin Skywalker n doesn't work jumper is a 2008 American Science Fiction action film Loosely based on Steven Good's 1992 novel of the same name directed by dougl and the film stars Hayden christensson as a young man capable of teleporting as he is chased by a secret society intent on killing him Jamie Bell Rachel Bilson Max Theory at anasophia Rob Diane him into a bank vault he had robbed years earlier Mark is later questioned by Roland meanwhile David charms Millie into traveling spontaneously to Rome he trespasses at the Coliseum when the guards turn them away and while Millie is still outside the gate he is attacked by the paladins Griffin another jumper follows David when they run into each other in London being a paladin Hunter he explains who and what they are before leaving David accidentally chases Griffin through his jump SCAR or Wormhole an event horizon created by the jumper that they can pass through ending up at his lair in the middle of a desert David quickly returns to Rome where he's arrested after being interrogated his mother Mary suddenly appears and helps him Escape before the paladins can kill him he quickly escorts Millie to the airport telling her he can't get on the flight with her and then returns to Griffins David follows Griffin to Tokyo eventually convincing him to partner up to kill Roland and save Millie they jump to the S airport hoping to catch Millie upon arrival but she has already gone home David jumps to her apartment and shows her his powers before the paladins attack them he quickly jumps her away to Griffin's Lair enraging him he explains that the Paladin's technology can keep a jump as jump scar open and pass through it Roland and his team suddenly appear at Griffin's Lair and fight them Roland pins David with electrical webbing to the wall and nearly kills him before Griffin blasts a flamethrower Griffin jumps to Millie's apartment and Returns the machine that keeps the scar open however before the scar closes a paladin cable pulls Millie back into her apartment David wants to rescue her but Griffin refuses to help saying losing friends and family to the paladins is simply a part of Jumper's life he then preps a bomb to deliver back to Millie's apartment to kill Roland David not wanting to endanger Millie steals the bomb and Griffin pursues it they engage in a lengthy battle through multiple jump SES until they finally jump to a chin Battlefield where David manages to trap Griffin in Tangled high tension wires returning to Millie's apartment to confront the paladins they immediately trapped David wanting to rescue Millie he attempts to jump her entire apartment a feet no jumper had succeeded at until that point David successfully jumps the apartment with Millie and the paladins into the Huron River David then jumps himself Millie and roll into the library though the successive jumps render him unconscious Millie revives him and he jumps roll into an isolated cave above the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon reminding him that he is different from the other jumpers as he did not kill him when he had the chance later David tracks down his mother who was also a paladin and has worked from the inside to protect him by hiding his information from her colleagues he accepts that they are on opposite sides bids farewell to her on good terms and then jumps away with Millie cast Hayden Christensen is David Rice a young man who discovers the genetic spatial ability to jump over short and long distances enshrouded by thin black smoke he also is adaptation of the science fiction novel Jumper by Steven good screenwriter Jim OES was hired to rewrite an adapted screenplay by davidus Goya for however lemon desired another rewrite and Simon kinber assisted in completing the script for lemon said about using the novel for developing the script this is 100% Steven good story it's just reinvented as a movie five in an interview good revealed that he approved of the deviations from the novel five before filming was to begin the studio announced plans to develop a Trilogy based on the novel's premise six while other films tend to use only one story board artist jumper required six who each worked on an individual action sequence the artists were given specific instruction on the rules of the teleportation used in the film to ensure accuracy in the storyboarding one of them Rob Mallen reflected on the instructions I was just thinking how would a guy that can teleport fight so you were really pushing yourself to try to think of inventive cool spectacular ways that you could use this jumping talent that these characters have seven casting in April 26 actors Tom Sturridge Teresa Pama and Jamie Bell were cast for jumper with starage in the lead role 8 the following July actor Samuel Jackson was cast as Roland Cox with producer Simon kinberg rewriting the original screenplay draft by goyer principal photography was scheduled to take place in Tokyo Rome Toronto and New York nine production was stopped in June 26 after producer Tom rofman told Limon the lead is 18 wouldn't the movie be better if he was 25 you have a huge movie here and adults won't go and see an 18-year-old fail consider it a children's movie you could make a bigger movie than that 10 Limon agreed on C ing older actors for furthering the Romantic aspect of the film 11 in August actor Hayden Christensen replaced Sturridge in the lead role as David just two weeks before the beginning of shooting as the studio became concerned about not having a more prominent actor in their Trio of young Stars after Christensen was recast for the lead role lemon replaced Palmer with Rachel Bilson filming in September 26 jumper was filmed at various locations in Peterborough Ontario and principal photography began in Toronto in October in December 26 lemon negotiated with the Rome film commission for rare access to film for 3 Days in the Coliseum the scene in the Coliseum was originally written for the pantheon where exterior shots were also filmed the crew was required to keep equipment off the ground by using harnesses and had to rely on natural light for filming 16 filming took place for 45 minutes in the morning and in the evening so as not to disturb the public during the amphitheater throughout the day 17 in order to maximize the short period for filming four stetic cams that was set up to ensure time was not wasted in reloading the camera tenna visual effects supervisor explained how visual effects were needed for various aspects after filming there were three kinds of shots there were shots where they were able to get most of what they needed in the Coliseum sik itself and then there were shots on a set that needed extensions beyond the limits of the set and then there were shots where we needed to create the Coliseum basically from scratch 18 after filming in Rome scenes were filmed in Toronto during December 2006 to Janu uary 2007 and wrapped at the Canadian location on January 19th on January 26th in Toronto 56-year-old David Richie a set dresser was fatally struck by Frozen debris while dismantling an outdoor set in wintry conditions another worker was injured and was sent to a hospital with serious head and shoulder injuries 20 after Toronto the cast and crew traveled to Tokyo to film scenes one scene required over 30 shoots as the scene could only be filmed in between traffic light changes 10 as a result of director lmon insisting Christenson perform his own stunts the actor injured his hands split open his ear and developed a hyper dilated puple that required hospital care while filming various scenes in February 27 the next filming site was set up at Gallup Park in an Arbor Michigan 60 students from the nearby hiron High School were cast as extras for the film 22 since additional filming was required of the area 20 other students were used for a day of filming in September 23 altogether filming took place in 20 cities and 14 countries 24 visual effects the New Zealand visual effects Studio we a digital was initially selected to assist in creating a preview clip for the 2007 comic convention 18 the Studio's 100 employees later developed the visual effects for 300 of the 600 shots in the film in total there are more than 100 jumps in the film and each jump was modified based on the distance and location the characters jumped 26 the jumps were developed using nuke and Shake software 18 many including those to Big Ben and the Sphinx were created with Meer 26 wers VFX supervisor Eric winquist explained how the visual effects of the jumps were created the concept of what a jump looks like changed and evolved a little over the course of post-production there are shots in the film that use still array footage but not in the same way that we saw in The Matrix The Matrix was largely about stopping time whereas this was about using slow shutter speeds on those still array cameras to end up up with a streaky motion blurred image as the perspective was changing which is a pretty interesting look 26 other visual effect Studios that assisted with the film include hydro's digital domain and pixel magic 18 LightWave 3D was also used for some of the movie scenes release jumper was released on February 14th 2008 by 20th Century Fox reception critical response on Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 15% based on 71 reviews with an average rating of 4.10 the SES critics consensus reads featuring uninvolving packs some cracking action into its brief running time and lays foundations on which a great franchise could be built 31 Australian film reviewer David Stratton stated that this film represents a new lackluster visuals make this a story you can jump past 45 novel teens Steven good the author of Jumper and reflex also wrote jumper Griffin story as a te for the film The Novel released on August 21st 27 focuses on the character Griffin which was created by screenwriter David S Goya specifically for the film because Griffin had not appeared in the two prior novel's good developed jumper Griffin story as a backstory of the character's Early Childhood before the film when writing the novel good had to work closely with the producer of the film to ensure that the story did not conflict with the film's premise 46 on press released a graphic novel jumper jump scars that portrays several backstories related to the film 47 the novel was released on February 13th tiang 8 one day before the film's wide release a publisher for on press commented on the te to the film stating the world that was being built around these characters was so well realized and the mythology so interesting that other stories about this conflict would be plentiful and add to what the filmmakers were Building 47 the novel was written by nunzio Def Philippi and Christina Weir and illustrated by Brian hurt in November 2016 the rist rated covers of the scaliger pleasant novel series by Derek Landy done by Tom peral to commend the series 10th anniversary had its characters modeled off of real life celebrity figures with the last teleporter Fletcher ran on the cover of the faceless ones visually based on promotional stills of Hayden Christenson as David Rice from jumper potential sequel author Steven Good's second novel in the jumper series reflex was published in 24 by 2014 two more good novels in the series have been published prior to the film's 2008 release Hayden Christenson reflected on the possibility of one or more sequels this has definitely been set up in a way that will allow for more films and Doug has been careful to make sure that he's created characters that will have room to grow 11 Lucas faster during production of the film stated in an interview the ideas got so large that they really couldn't fit into you know one or two movies they needed to evolve over at least three movies so we planned the story out over three movies and then we sliced it up in such a way as to leave room for the other two movies five in response to the film's box office performance director Doug lemman has spoken of his ideas for a sequel among them are that jumpers can reach other planets in travel in time as well as their capacity for Espionage he has also stated that Rachel bilson's character would learn how to jump hinted by David falling unconscious before the jump from the river to the library just as in good squl reflex 48 however as of 2023 no further updates were given for a sequel film review there you have the premise for Doug lemon's jumper the prequel of movie so silly you may find yourself giggling helplessly even as you wish you could magically transport yourself almost anywhere else in the world but where you are in front of the screen showing it let me jump back and correct that the title proper as jumper but the port for the sequel is installed into the epilot and there is one inviable rule no girls in the lair does this make any sense to you no good then it's not just me fortunately I can't risk giving away too much of a story because there isn't one there's just this guy named David mostly played by 26-year-old Hayden Christensen but sometimes by 90-year-old Max theot though the use of separate actors is Superfluous since one doesn't look appreciably older than the other who can jump from say New York to Tokyo instantaneously that's all in the prologue David has a crush on this girl named Millie mostley the ox Rachel Bilson but there's a bully named Biff irar entirely Jesse James poor David lives with his mean alcoholic dad Henry portrait of a serial killer Michael Rooker as William in a room with posters of Einstein and Kurt Cobain he's got to get out of this place an arbor that is he's trapped so he jumps it's every kid's fantasy find yourself in a bad situation and pop right out of it it's every Don Juan's fantasy you can pick up a hot blonde babe in a bar have sex with her and disappear immediately afterwards it's every travel agent's night May you can go anywhere in a blink picnic on the head of the Sphinx hang out with the minute hand on Big Ben as if you were merry Poppins and here's the thing nobody notices sometimes when David jumps he busts up the walls or floors and generates a lot of dust or water damage sometimes he doesn't but either way nobody pays any attention it's scary David can plop into a throng of extras anywhere in in the world the streets of Tokyo or a London pub and except for this one kid at the Detroit airport not one person bats an eyelash and if it doesn't matter to them why should it to us it's implied that the jumper may have to have visited a place before he can jump to it but maybe not so never mind when such Miracles can can occur anytime without reason or explanation then life and plots are meaningless jumper may as well be subtitled the trouble with CGI anything can happen and usually does but So What by the the time MCE Windu shows up with white hair and a lias is Samuel L Jackson is Roland oh forget it Billy Elliot Jamie Bell is Griffin explains that since medieval times I believe there's one in shamberg the paladins have been hunting the jumpers it's been going on for centuries and no one seems to know or care why the paladins were apparently named after Imperial guards of ancient Rome and later High officials in the Catholic church and the jumpers are just called jumpers nor does the movie explain its own movie references like why a skyscraper plummet from the Coen Brothers the hudsucker proxy should suddenly collide with the public pool scene from little children or is it the Baby Ruth scene from kadash Shack because it's totally random that's why in a movie review it's usually incumbent upon the critic to make at least one mention of the movie as a movie The Cinematic touch that's stuck with me is when David returns to an arbor after an 8-year absence and has a Marty McFly moment when he discovers that Millie has become wait for at a barid at least she's not his mom but what's happened to his mom is even more awful and inexplicable there's an oddly framed shot where David and Millie are talking across the bar and in between them are at least three extras watching an offscreen football game you know this is something I say a lot but I don't think it ever fit as much as with this film jumper could be the poster child of how it looks to have a truly great idea executed in such an average way you almost get unreasonably angry because you can easily imagine a much better story with such an intriguing premise but most importantly different actors in it I hate to do this but our protagonists were either misdirected or not cast well jumper is a film based on a really simple yet great premise some people can teleport and live among us from here you can take this into a variety of ways you can develop a world with its own rules AA John Wick franchise you can play into the gods live among us thing that became popular within our current pop culture you can take it philosophical or you can make an action movie about a guy who does whatever he wants and he's a dick about it he behaves like a dick even to people who he supposedly cares about because if you strip it down that's what this film is don't get me wrong this movie isn't bad by any means some action sequences are shot entertainingly the film is under 90 minutes so it never manages to bore you and it's full of young sexy people they unfortunately aren't great in this and have no chemistry yes I'm talking about the leading Duo Hayden Christ densen and Rachel Bilson let me start with Hayden because if there is somebody who might be the unluckiest guy in the history of Hollywood W who still has a career at him most people think he can't act because of his performance in the Star Wars prequels and then others have seen him in shaded glass 2003 or awake 2007 where he proves there is something in him if you haven't seen either of these films I strongly recommend both because they convince me that he's more than capable of acting unfortunately in jumper he isn't great I understand part of it is the unlike ability of the character he's portraying but he can't sell it he comes across as obnoxious rather than the anti hero we should be rooting for as for Rachel Bilson I have never watched any of her TV shows so I am not familiar enough with her to judge whether or not she is a great actress but in this she wasn't I wouldn't be surprised if the material wouldn't allow her to do her best work but this was rough to watch and there was Zero chemistry in between them the whole movie relies on you believing that they were meant to be ever since they were children but if the actors can't sell it on the screen the audience won't buy it at least I didn't as to the other actor Samuel L Jackson did his standard performance that was fine nothing special but nothing that would stand out either Jamie Bell could have been an interesting character had we known a bit more about him or had he gotten more screen time and don't let yourself be fooled by seeing names like Diane Lane or Kristen Stewart Diane has about 5 minutes of screen time and Kristen about 2 minutes the main thing about this idea was the unfulfilled potential and again I know I keep mentioning this point a lot too but this might have been too short short I can easily see this being turned into a TV show with a better cast Better World building establishing rules and then we might have something on our hands that works think about it teleporting is easily one of the most wished for superpowers every time there is a debate about what's the best superpower teleporting cracks the top three on most people's list and it is easy to see why being able to go anywhere at any time saving so much time not being stuck in traffic being able to go on holiday at second notice seeing your relatives or friends little anytime you want anybody can imagine what they would do with it and here lies this film's issue since this is such a simple yet intriguing concept we all have imagined what we would have done having this ability and I don't know about you but this film barely scratched the surface overall jumper almost felt lazy it feels like you're generic Hollywood Blockbuster where somebody came up with a great idea but everything else was done on autopilot from casting main characters with no chemistry to barely defining the rules establishing any world building this entire film feels like it's been done with most people half asleep it ticks almost every single box so it doesn't bore you and when the movie is over you feel like there was something great hidden there but it leaves you wanting more but not in the Good Sense where you are craving for a sequel more like and I need to know more about this world how it works some history behind it just give me anything this is where jumper failed to deliver I read the 1992 Steven good novel which was fairly streamlined science fiction take a precept that a young man can teleport and then play the game of figuring out how things might evolve from there when he's out of cash he figures out he can jump into a bank vault when he has an apartment door that doesn't open rather than having the super fix it he just uses it as added security and so on jumper the book is pretty understated jumper the movie is directed by the producer of the born movies and is a flashy action movie with Sam Jackson as the bad guy and Hayden christensson and the main character in the movie unlike the book which had no evil organiz there is an ancient Cult of bad people religious zealots who hunt jumpers of which there are many and slay them to do this they use strange shock bons which lash out cables that capture their targets tase them so they can't teleport away and hold them until the guys can use ceremonial knives to execute them apparently they have not heard of bullets also in the movie unlike the book which had no other jumpers there is Jamie Bell who plays Griffin one of several a teamup griffin is mentally Disturbed at best and wage an incredibly inept War against Jackson who is not fooling around except for using the weird cable guns that's fooling around as far as I can tell I think the driving force behind jumper was the director's wish to film in exotic locations the best of which is inside the Coliseum under the conditions that no equipment could be placed on the ground that they only had two HRS per day and used natural light I bet that was a blast they also got to do Tokyo and even an arbor beyond that though him not sure they had a lot in mind really mostly just some setup for jumper to the book sequel was called reflex the problem with jumper is not in the details Hayden is a strong lead Jackson has Charisma even when his character is purely two-dimensional and doesn't make a lot of sense they have religious objections to teleporting but have a machine that allows them to teleport the locations are indeed Sumptuous and the action courtesy of Simon kinberg X3 mister and Mrs Smith is pretty crackling no the problems are not in the wide angles there in the details the movie asks several questions with the main character David Unite with his high school sweetheart what happened to his mom will he make it in the world who is Jackson anyway and answers them all in a pat flat manner Hayden isn't impossible to care about but he's a bit of a cold fish at one point he watches people trapped in a flood zone on TV with the announcer saying that it will take a miracle to reach them he go surfing again the character Arc of him becoming less self-centered is never resolved the other characters only have first names which while not meaningful in and of itself is pretty telling since they only have one dimension to the rest of them too the whole electrical batan fighting while teleporting thing is visually well done but takes Center Stage when it should be a throw away in Cameron's T2 the Terminator does things like grow a third arm to fly the copter and shoot and turn around by morphing during the battle this is as it should be understated when watching the movie I felt like it was all sugar and no meat ultimately jumper is a big summer movie that came out in the winter it's loud flashy and dumb it has reasonable star power and good location shots the on to PFF the Sphinx money shot is worth whatever the paid for it it's a bit like The Wizard of Oz Trio though in that it doesn't have the guts to take real chances it lacks heart in terms of characters that we really connect to and it um isn't too smart here is a new rule for how I review movies if I'm watching a seemingly serious cify action flick and the first thing that pops into my mind is a song written and sung by Matt Stone and Trey Parker that is not a good thing the seemingly serious cify action in question if Fox upcoming release jumper and the song Stone and Parker's ' 80s action movie inspired ballad Montage from the film Team America World Police the reason for this momentary laps and concentration seem to stem from the fact that jumper felt more like one big action Montage than it did like an actual film based on a series of books from author Steven good jumper is easily one of the most frustrating movie agoing experiences of 28 so far frustrating because of its brilliant Concepts centering on the lives of unique people who can literally jump through wormholes and go anywhere in the world instantly frustrating also because it was adapted by a riding team led by David EST goyer who has had some really solid outings including 2005 as Batman Begins and increasingly frustrating because it was directed by Doug lmon who successfully delivered both the born identity in Mr and Mrs Smith two films that I personally enjoyed the hell out of at the core of this frustration is a very stale lackluster performance from Hayden Christensen who seems completely out of place as David Rice the jumper who we follow through the entire film rice is a high school learner who discovered the fact that he could teleport and then used it to run away from a broken home he also used it to rob banks paying for a nice Manhattan apartment and an over thtop bachelor lifestyle that is until he is finally Tracked Down by Roland Samuel L Jackson a member of a long-standing religious group known as paladins the jumper Hunters Roland will stop at nothing to track and kill David even if that means offing his father Michael Rooker or his childhood love Millie Rachel Bilson we learned all of this in a rush at the beginning of the film with a poorly scripted series of voiceovers from Christenson that leads to you guest at a montage and besides the existence of some wicked cool action sequences toward the end of the film that is what this film feels like for too much of the film's 88 minute runtime the audience is left to feel like it is getting the short version of the story left with a feeling that this film is part of something bigger something much more in-depth and interesting but while the story's development seems incredibly rushed if you allow yourself to make peace with the fact that there will be things you just won't understand about the plot you just may find plenty of things to enjoy about the film one thing is the performance from Jamie Bell who plays Griffin another jumper who comes along to befriend and ultimately help David along in his battle to save his love as well the action sequences in the film are as brilliant as the concept itself the ability of the jumpers to transport not only themselves but objects there touching leads to some pretty cool special effects shots think about it this way they literally throw a bus at Sam Jackson in the middle of the Sahara Desert how is that not awesome it is awesome a bright shining glimmer of awesome amidst a movie experience that is anything but all that jumper has in creativity and Innovative concept is squandered with Messy storytelling and a stale performance from its leading man in the end the film feels more like the bean burrito of movies in 2008 when you first begin to eat it it tastes great but it goes in and out of you so quickly that it's like you never ate it at all and few hours letter all you can think about was the bad part of the experience the part where you found yourself singing to the porcelain gods for 20 minutes it's impossible for Outsiders to know who deserves most of the blame for this dud it's directed Doug lemon its three screenwriters its multiple producers or the various Studio Executives who might have done far too much meddling or not nearly enough whatever the case jumper or a barely coherent genre mishmash about a guy who transports himself across the globe and will is of interest only because it revisits a theme that Mr Lemon has explored in films like the born identity and if reports about his troubled Productions are true speaks to his own reputation as an escape artist the character who wiggles out of trouble the trouble here starts when a likable High School loser David Rice Max theor discovers that he can do an end run around the SpaceTime Continuum teleporting from here to there faster than Dorothy can click her sparkling red shoes before long he's zipping from Detroit to Tokyo and into bank vaults and has transformed into a materialist slacker now played by a somand Hayden Christensen whose rooms are filled with goodies and walls are papered with images of his fav jump spots one minute he's cruising a blonde Sil in London the next he's hanging with a sphinx in Egypt it's all good except that it's all bad from the sublate dialogue to the chaotic Direction and heavily Ed points in between then you know something happens in this case the something is mostly Samuel L Jackson who is a mysterioso Avenger arrives barking his lines and wearing the latest addition to what has become a notorious collection of extreme hair pieces and looks Snow White and close cropped Mr Jackson's hair in this film dominates its every scene it's louder than the predictably volle actor rising out of the visual and narrative clutter like a beacon it glows it shouts it entertains it earns its keep it also suggests that someone here has a sense of humor as does the casting of the persuasively thuggish Michael Rooker Henry portrait of a serial killer and the woful misused Diane Lane as David's estranged parents luckily for Miss Lane her character doesn't get much screen time largely because she appears to be on hand only to help humanize David to counterbalance the brutal father with the sentimentalized mother she's as disposable as the pretty bland thing Rachel Bilson who tags along with David for a while and has been written into the screenplay for all the reasons female characters are usually written into male coming off at stories namely she looks good in her underwear and establishes the hero's heterosexuality Miss Bilson fills out her bra nicely but is nowhere as seductive as Jamie Bell who is a British jumper called Griffin g gives the film a jolt of energy along with a heartbeat when he jumps so does the film at school in Anne Arbor Michigan 15-year-old David Rice presents Millie Harris with the gift of a snow globe but bully Mark cabal throws it out onto a frozen overa River venturing out to get the globe David falls through the thin ice instead of drowning David is startled to find suddenly himself in the middle of a library David realizes that he has the ability to mentally teleport himself to anywhere that he is thinking about leaving time he sets up an apartment in New York and teleports into a bank vault to take all the money he wants 8 years later and David is enjoying a lavish lifestyle teleporting wherever he wants in the world the mysterious Roland then suddenly turns up in David's apartment Roland knows about David's abilities and has tools that can lasso and prevent him teleporting but David makes an escape David goes back to renew his relationship with Millie who believed he was dead he takes her on a flight to Rome but once there finds himself pursued by Roland's men in the midst of this he is aided by Griffin a fellow jumper Griffin explains that Roland is a member of the paladins a mysterious organization that has hunted and eliminated the jumpers throughout the ages David presses a reluctant Griffin to help him as Roland targets Millie as a means of capturing him jumper was a high-profile release that came with a good deal of talent arrayed behind it in the director's chair there was Doug Limon a smart edgy director who is always worth watching with films like swingers 1996 go 1999 the the born identity 2002 and Mr and Mrs Smith 2005 behind him and a fine subsequent Venture into science of fiction with Edge of Tomorrow 2014 and the young adult SF film chaos walking 2021 plus also produced The George RR Martin TV series nightflyers 2018 the trio of writers on the script includes some strong names including David es Goya one of the finest genre writers around with works like blade 1998 and sequels dark city 1998 and Batman Begins 2005 under his Jim SS who wrote Fight Club 1999 and Simon kinberg who did write Mr and Mrs Smith for lemon although also has the black marks of xXx State of the Union the next level 2005 and X-Men the Last Stand 286 against him and subsequently became a regular writer producer on the X-Men films it is a considerable surprise then with so many impressive names in the creative mix as to why jumper ends up as such a non-film there is a semi-interesting concept to the film indeed David almost seems like a character rped for recruitment into the X-Men franchise or as one of TVs Heroes twers and 610 on the other hand there is limited potential to watching people spending 88 Minutes teleporting around the world the unfortunate thing is that jumper does nothing with the concept after I saw the trailer which sets up the concept youth discovers he can teleport anywhere then finds he is being pursued by a nemesis I was waiting to see what twists or conceptual spins the various script writers would put on the idea the great disappointment about jumper is that that is it the entire film can be summed up by watching the trailer Hayden Christenson stopped by Paladin Samuel L Jackson even then jumper could have worked if Doug lmon had made it into a decent action vehicle or kept the suspense tightly ratcheted as he did in the born identity however neither turns out to be the case there are numerous scenes with people teleporting back and forth to novel locations some cute scenes where Hayden Christensen and Jamie Bell are teleporting about in a sports car in a busy climactic fight between jumpers and Palin but the sequences lack any big wow factor and fail to stir the adrenaline anywh the script fails to deliver any interesting twists while the major suspense situation that drives the bulk of the film Hayden Christensen putting Rachel Bilson on a flight from Rome back to Ann Arbor and racing to prevent Samuel Jackson from getting to her in the 8 hours before the plane touches down feels a situation that has been contrived by the script writers moreover the characters seem either Bland or severely underdeveloped to his CR Hayden and emerges with far more handsome Charisma and Screen presence than he did in either of his universally derided performances in the Star Wars prequels however the romance between he and Rachel Bilson coasts by without the slightest engagement it is hard to buy her as a character one minute she is doing a double take when a guy from her childhood that she thought was dead suddenly turns up then without even the slightest explanation he persuades her within the space of a few minutes to abandon her job and fly with him to Rome the film's greatest credibility gap though is surely that she continues to accompany a guy who for much of the film only answers every question and doubt she has with an evasion this credulity is stretched even more when it comes to the characters played by Jamie Bell and Samuel L Jackson about whom nothing is explained at all the screenplay keeps hinting at a larger Mythic structure not unin to the secret Wars of the ages that we see in the Highlander and underworld series exactly who the paladins are and for what reason they perceive the jumpers to be a threat is never explained there is no explanation of why only some people inherit the jumper abilities when Hayden Christenson reconciles with his mother Diane Lan at the end she talks about how she had to abandon him because she was a paladin and saw that he was a jumper this implies that being a paladin is genetically inherited but nothing is ever done to explain what the difference between a paladin and a normal human being is that the bulk of Jumper's premise hangs on these questions it is deeply frustrating that it chooses to do nothing in terms of explaining any of its background it feels like a film that coasts by solely on a series of dramatic cues demanded by market research handsome star A Touch of Romance flashy special effects in congruous use of international locations and has excised all other demands beyond that the other major quibble I have is a scientific one I can grant the film The adequate suspension of disbelief to accept the idea of teleportation as a psychic ability the film never goes into explaining how the process works which is probably wise the most amusing side unintentional effect would come in that different parts of the Earth rotate at different speeds the Earth might be likened to a spinning record or CD where the outside of the disc must travel at a faster velocity than the inner Edge in order to have the same number of rotations similarly with the Earth's rotation an object traveling at the equator has a higher relative velocity to an object at one of the poles a person at the equator travels about 1500 ft per second while someone at the poles is hardly moving at all thus whenever Hayden Christensen teleports from say Egypt which is near the equator to say an arbor or London which are quite a bit further north he would end up with considerable Surplus inertial velocity one calculates that a jump from Egypt to Michigan would leave Hayden Christensen with around 350 M perow extra velocity which would probably be enough to propel him through the wall of Rachel bilson's apartment and into the next one too movie review coffee in Paris lunch in the maldiv kicking back in the afternoon on the forehead of the Sphinx it's all in a day's work for David Rice a jumper who has only visualize his final destination to teleport there it all started the day David accidentally plunged through thin ice on a river in Suburban Michigan instead of drowning he suddenly found himself at the an Arbor Public Library did I just teleport he wanders amid the stairs of startled books soon he Masters his power and Embraces a world of endless possibility David trades in his truly depressing home life which includes a Gruff relationship with his beers willing father for a shot at the good life bank robberies fun to move to New York City and a lifestyle of unfetter henis hooking up with beautiful women surfing in the South Pacific ET as far as David is concerned he's in heaven why settle on one place he asks when you can have the whole world until that is a mysterious man named Roland shows up at his Swank apartment to put him on notice did you think it could go on like this forever Roland asks living like this with no consequences there are always consequences David escapes Roland's first attack then promptly looks up an old High School Crush named Millie and whisks her off to Rome once there David meets another jumper Griffin who informs him that his power comes with a significant downside Roland David discovers is a paladin one of an ancient band of religious zealots whose sole purpose is to exterminate jumpers and Griffin informs him fail also kill anyone who gets in their way including unsuspecting girlfriends who haven't been clued in as Roland and his fellow paladins track David and Griffin Millie unwittingly becomes the bait in a deadly game of cat and mouse teleportation style positive elements though he's cast as the villain and acts like one Roland is right when he admonishes David that there are always consequences for our actions David has some serious character flaws as well see but he does try to do right by Milly first by sending her back to America without him in an attempt to protect her then by coming to her rescue after she falls into Roland's clutches when there in high school an awkward slightly geeky David gives Millie a snow globe as a gift just not really interested in him at that point but she responds kindly to him as an adult Millie evinces a desire for honesty in their fast moving relationship when she asks David not to lie to her David's father William eventually tries to reopen the door of communication with his son and tells David that he's free to come home anytime he wants William loyally tries to protect his son from Roland by refusing to divulge information about him and he pays for that loyalty with his life spoiler warning we learn that David's mother is actually a paladin who left her family so that she wouldn't have to kill her young son she warns him about the Paladin's approach in one scene and offers him time to escape in another both David and Griffin come from families where they had little or no adult supervision thus it's possible if we really stretch things to interpret their immature choices as a consequence of poor home lives spiritual elements before killing a jumper Rolland tells him you're an Abomination only God should have the power to be all places at all times aine he repeats to David later Griffin tells David that the paladins have hunted jumpers for centuries and that they are motivated by religious extremism he says that these religious nut jobs were responsible for the Inquisition and the witch hunts and he believes they'll kill everybody rowand is convinced that the Jumper's power has a corrupting influence on them that fail always use their powers selfishly which in fact David has already begun to do spoiler warning David has the chance to kill Roland but he spares the Paladin in an attempt to convince him that he isn't thoroughly evil sexual content David meets a woman at a London bar and later ends up in bed with her it's implied that he slept with her when we see him get out of bed shirtless and see her apparently naked form strategically draped with a sheet in Rome we watch as David and Millie begin to pull one another's clothes off he's again shirtless and we see her in her bra and pants as they kiss and paw at each other that scene ends before Fe completely undressed but it's again implied that fave had sex Millie also wears CLE dering outfits violent content easily the most brutal scene in the movie is one in which Roland dispatches an unnamed Jumper by stabbing him with a huge knife a violent act that we fully witness elsewhere the Paladin's trap jumpers using a club likee projectile that's connected to electrified coils of Steel rope the electric current restrains the jumpers and keeps them from teleporting long enough for the paladins to kill them multiple fist fights are chalk full of savage hits and kicks David gets tossed out of the the upper level of his apartment onto a table below Griffin unleashes a flamethrower on a group of paladins we see the body of one of them in another scene in other violent moments David falls through the ice and is swept Downstream unable to penetrate the ice above him later he teleports most of Millie's apartment with the minute into a river Fay are both temporarily trapped underwater before getting free while learning to teleport David hits a tree Griffin and David teleport into a fierce gun and tank battle in Cheta where David leaves Lees his friend entangled in electrical wires because he refuses to help rescue Millie Griffin steals a Mercedes Benz by driving it through a showroom window in Tokyo then proceeds to Kine through town repeatedly teleporting the car through traffic to avoid accidents himself while causing many of them in his wake he also manages to pull a double-decker bus through a teleportation portal in a failed attempt to kill Roland Griffin's philosophy toward the paladins could be summarized as get them before they get us crude or profane language there's one F-word and six or seven swords characters take guards in Jesus names in vain two or three times each milder words include a handful of uses of H and one of be tired people blurred out holy crap drug and alcohol content the woman David picks up at an English bar as drinking a gin and tonic he orders tankor and tonic Millie works at a bar she and David each have a Budweiser while another old acquaintance of theirs is obviously drunk David's father is usually shown with a beer in hand one scene shows him finishing a beer and opening another other negative elements after stealing a lot of money from a bank David asks the audience in voiceover narration what would you have done I figured i' pay it back someday right David consistently acts as if the world owes him whatever he feels like taking that applies to cash women surfboards and much more that theme is reinforced throughout David breaks into the Coliseum in Rome to show Millie areas that are closed to the public his rationale now nothing is off limits Griffin's attitude seems pretty similar as evidenced by his willingness to steal a car for the sole purpose of going on a crazy Joy Ride elsewhere Griffin urinates on a wall we see him from behind and David gets into a fight as an adult with a jock who pested him in high school he ultimately teleports his old Nemesis into a bank vault and leaves him there where he's later arrested conclusion lots of guys in particular will think jumper looks like a lot of fun after watching its trailer I did alas this is a film in search of a plot and a purpose and as it turns out a moral compass Hayden Christensen who plays David Zips this way and that through teleportation wormholes but the story lacks much that might set it apart from the scores of special effects driven actioners that have preceded it still it's the heavenisticchaos he's got the girl and banished the bad guy his repeated thefts his immoral sexual stints and his self-absorbed anything goes attitude are never challenged forget Peter Parker's Maxim with great power comes great responsibility with David Rice it's more like with great power comes great opportunity for me here's what he actually says this thing that just happened it could set me free freedom to him means getting whatever he wants on his own terms never mind legality morality and responsibility that message is perhaps most clear when we see him watching a news story about people drowning in a flash flood it feels like a setup for him to go save some of them but erope no self-sacrificial heroics here and I'm supposed to like this character why because Hayden Christensen once played anakan Skywalker n doesn't work
