'Theatre Saved Me' Says Tony Nominee Jessica Chastain

[Music] it has been a shockingly emotional day for me and I and I feel quite raw and very sensitive and I think it's because in some sense it's reminding me of my childhood um and it's so important and it's also reminding me of all the people that helped me like did this there was a man David McDonald who ran Broadway Academy and he gave me free classes to study there when I was a little kid and uh it's so important for the Arts to be in schools because I did not grow up in a in an easy way in in many situations and theater saved me and just what this show has meant to you how special it's been working with this company and just the young audience is coming yes it's been so special I mean Jamie Lloyd really took a big swing on this version of a doll's house and to get to be part of Amy herzog's Broadway debut is the fact that she hasn't had a Broadway debut that was a little bit like how was that possible because she's a one of our great great great writers uh this company is is is so uh important to me I mean we do a warm-up every day together before our half hour we all meet and even the underst studies and we're all together and we play games and we connect before um we we get on stage before we we have our half hour to get on stage um it just means a lot it's a big swing and um we got six Noms so well deserve welcome home to Broadway thank you I mean I'm I'm a New Yorker so this for sure I'm going to be back this is where I live this is what I love to do and um it means a lot to me to be a part of it [Music]
