Each year, the major league baseball players alumni association recognizes one player from each major league team with the heart and hustle award for demonstrating a strong passion for the game of baseball and embodying the spirit values and traditions of America's favorite pastime here to present the heart and hustle award is our manager alex Cora and now the Red Sox winner of the 2024 heart and hustle award. Jaron Durant, James Paxton has faced the Houston Astros more than any other opponent in his career. Paxton very familiar with these guys. He has nine career wins against Houston including one in the 219 Acs when he was with the Yankees. Jose Altuve will lead things off for the Astros Paxton and that one deep into the hole and a base set. He has really hurt Pax in his career. He's now 13 for 38. Here's Bregman. He goes after the first one up the middle might be two. It will be valdez zips it on after getting the bag very quickly. Love to see that right very next pitch right up the middle and Valdez playing up the middle for the easy double play two down for Alvarez. This is exactly how the Red Sox want to see him all day with the bases empty wraps that one on one hop a deflection by Smith. Nobody there at the bag and he's going to be safe. Paxton going down on a knee. That's the reason he did not get over to cover in pain there. Trainer out immediately. Oh, man, this is not, this is not what this pitching staff needed. Oh, man, the third hitter into the game and hobbling off James Paxton, he can't put any pressure on that. The Red Sox say it's a right calf strain. So certainly better news than what it appeared to be right now. It seems so Sims is ready to go. Had a very rough outing two nights ago. He's going to hit this one to short little flip by Hamilton to valdez to retire the side. Red Sox coming up in the first inning. Today is the day of the Diesel. Hunter Brown is on the mound to make his 23rd start. Jarren Duran leads it off the 12 swing and struck him out on a curveball downstairs and Durant is retired. Got him Brown kept fighting after getting down in the count. He strikes out his second batter of the game and there's two away in the inning, 22 pitch and that one in play to left center field who wants it? Jake Myers calls off Jordan and puts it away. Good start to this one for Hunter Brown strikeouts and a fly out to center Dezo hitting 313, his first major league home run yesterday and we drill that one toward the alley on the move. Rafiel, the dive, the full extension. A tremendous plays a really good route on this one full layout. Right center steals a double, maybe triple if that gets past him. He likes to dive. Some outfielders don't like to leave their feet. He loves it. He's got a flair and he goes back to the sweeper, 123. Yoshida here batting cleanup today to hold up his swing. He goes too far. Third base umpire Dan Marz says that's a swing and that will be strikeout number three for Hunter Brown. Conor Wong the batter and Rice that's going to be down for a base hit and the Red Sox get their first hit today against hunter Brown. There goes the runner won. Here goes the throw by Jr the tag in time one catcher guns down the other Jr Diaz showing off the arm on that throw and there's one away here in the third that will bring up altuve and he rifles this one to the right side. That's a base hit Altuve with two sharp singles and there's two men aboard fly ball to left , not deep coming in Durant and under that for out. Number two, here comes Cora with Alvarez coming up to bat. He wants Bernardino Jordon steps in singled his last time up and he's hit by a pitch here didn't mean to hit him. He threw a breaking ball and hit him right between the two fours on his back. Nobody with more bases loaded at bats this year for the Astros than Diaz. Here comes Dub-n trying to score the throw is not quite in time. A close play at the plate ruled safe. Mauricio Dub-n aggressively down the line makes it a one nothing Astros lead. Very opportunistic, mauricio Dub-n and a great jump at third base. Very alert. Dub-n just saw a little bit of daylight and that was all he needed to see to take off. That was fantastic. And a swing and a miss and down he goes strike three, that'll retire the side, but they do get on the board on the wild 11 nothing. Houston Hunter Brown back out there bottom of the third. Hunter Brown showing that fastball early and often and it just blowing by nick Sogard for the first out of the inning 97.5 miles an hour right through the top part of the zone and Sogard just did not have an answer for it. Got him again. Hunter Brown pretty fired up as he strikes out Durant for the second time. Here's will you Abreu third strike? Not happy. He goes down looking, that's a half dozen strikeouts for hunter Brown Yoshi to the batter swinging a three pitch strikeout hunter continues to roll a 1234 that is now seven strikeouts for Brown Brean Bernardino still on the mound for the Red Sox Pedro leon leading off here grounded sharply left side deep in a hole sliding Hamilton can't get it. Pedro Leone has his second major league hit. Now, it's Jose Altuve who's two for two line drive base hit altuve three for three a base hit to left right and center jose enjoying his DH day. Here comes Houston with Bregman on the way and Alvarez to follow drills one deep to left field. Four, get about it and you can kiss that one. Goodbye over the monster seats. And on the Lansdowne Street three run ball by Alex Bregman second home run in as many days for Bregman his 17th homer of the season bringing the heat to Fenway four, 41 ft longest home run of his career Astros nail in front four to nothing. The 45th home run allowed by the Red Sox staff since the all star break the most in the majors. Here's Jordan Alvarez crushes this one deep to center field. It sends back, Rafaella at the wall. Look up, see you later back to back Jacks first Bregman. Now Alvarez Astros lead is five to nothing. Alvarez is 25th of the year and his third in the last two days. What a display of showmanship right here. You're done giving him a high five. Alex Bregman said, hold on, watch this five home runs in five games for Alvarez. He's played 15 career games in Boston. He hit eight home runs with 20 RB I S and that's going to do it for the lefty. So Brennan Bernardino's out Luis Garc-a coming in. Jeremy Pena stands in 0 to 2 ground ball, broken bat, hit up the middle, tough play coming in the field at the second baseman Valdez and not in time to first. Pena beats it out. There goes Pena and the throw is going to be not quite in time. Valdez thinks he got the tag on his leg is Pena sliding in head first and they are going to challenge he tag the dirt or did he get a piece of his leg? That's the only the tag was down in time. But whether he tagged the dirt or tagged, the leg is the key. I think he hit the dirt. He doesn't really get him until the skin of his hand gets on the inside of that leg on the field stands, the runner is safe. Boston will lose their talent now it's jake Myers turn the eighth man at bat this inning loops this one down the right field line. That's a fair ball that's going to score a run in. The score is Pena and the Astros add to their lead. It's now a 6 to 0 game. Jake Myers, the RB I with two out nobody on for Bregman this one driven to left field back on , it goes Durant, he's looking up again this ball off the top of the wall. Bregman didn't miss back to back home runs by much and said he's got a stand up double here with two outs, an intentional pass of Alvarez 1st and 2nd 2 down. Now Jer Diaz Garcia is 32 and that's hammered out to left center field. It sends back Duran and it is off the monster. Bregman scores Alvarez getting the way from Gary Pettis Hill scores standing up. It's a two run double for yer Diaz and an eight nothing lead for the Astros. Here's Pena with a man at second. Pena drills one high and deep to left field. The kid from Rhode Island just puts one out of the stadium at Fenway and the Astros have double hanging slider and JP three goes yard all five of the Astros first five hitters in their lineup have a homer in this series. Now, three more home runs today , they have hit nine in the series. Astros are having a field day at Fenway. So the Astros putting it on here in the middle innings to lead it 10 to 0 back to back hits by Rafaelle and that's how the bottom of the sixth begins Hunter Brown right now just trying to look to shut down Red Sox offense coming off a four run top of the sixth inning. Durant looking to put one in play. He's got for two today, a couple of strikeouts down and in ball four and Durant walks and the Red Sox have loaded the bases with nobody out. First walk issued by Brown today to do a little Brown picks up strikeout number nine matching his season high, big strikeout with the bases pulled. So the bases still loaded one out for William Abreu and a 32 pitch and a four run will score. The Red Sox get on the board to make it 10 to 1 and Joepa will pop out of the dugout and pat on the back. This is what you got to do to protect hunter Brown the game with a season high nine strikeouts. Caleb Ferguson into the game with the bases loaded. Masataka has gone over two, couple of Ks and hits that one in the center field charging myers. It's going to drop down for a base hit he at 10 to 2, 39th RB I for Yoshida and they're reloaded again, ground ball towards Bregman. He goes to Dub-n for one to turn double play. That's what they needed to end the threat in the sixth inning. Caleb Ferguson gets the double play ground ball Astros leading 10 to 2 and Dominic Smith comes in the pitch so it's his third career pitching appearance not allowed an earned run yet. Jeremy floats one to left field and this will be off the monster. Jeremy is going to try for second and he's going to get there with a double for the Astros shortstop with three consecutive hits here, single, a home run and now a double one Hot Sogard down to second with an out and turning the double play. And how about our guy Tom smith who is just about automatic coming out of the bullpen gets an ovation here. New pitcher of this game is going to be Sean Dubin 10 to 2 here in the bottom of the ninth and the Red Sox are down to the final out strike three called ball game over Sean Dan gets a couple of strikeouts. The Astros strike out 13 more today after 15 strikeouts yesterday, an offensive explosion in the middle innings and for the second straight year , the Astros have swept the Red Sox here at Fenwick.
