Record-breaking temperatures hit western U.S. in late summer heat wave

AVOID FLOODED WATER ROADS WITH THE MORE RAIN EXPECTED. >>> RECORD-BREAKING HEAT IN THE UNITED STATES AS WELL. PHOENIX SAUL THE 100th STREET DAY OF AT LEAST 100 DEGREES. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA IS BATTLING EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNINGS THAT COULD BRING DESERT COMMUNITY TEMPERATURES UP TO NEAR 115 DEGREES AND WITH THAT COMES SMALL GOOD CONCERNS TO LOS ANGELES COUNTY. TINA PATEL IS JOINING US NOW WITH MORE OF THESE HEAT DANGERS. I KNOW IT IS STILL EARLY BUT THIS WEEK SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA IS EXPECTED TO SEE THE HOTTEST WEATHER OF THE YEAR. WHAT HAS IT BEEN LIKE SO FAR AND WHAT ARE THE CONCERNS FROM RESIDENTS AND OFFICIALS? >> IT IS NICE RIGHT NOW BECAUSE THE SUN IS NOT UP YET AND WE ARE ALONG THE COAST SO IT IS COOLER HERE. WE ARE EXPECTING IT TO BE DANGEROUSLY HOT WITH LABOR DAY EXPECTED TO BE THE OFFICIAL OR RATHER UNOFFICIAL END OF THE SUMMER. IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA THE TEMPERATURES HAVE RISEN EVERY DAY THIS WEEK AND THEY COULD BE HITTING US AT 110 OR 115 IN THE INLAND COMMUNITIES. LIBRARY AND SENIOR CENTERS ARE OPEN FOR THOSE THAT MAY NOT HAVE AIR CONDITIONING. MORE OF THOSE WILL BE OPEN TO THE NEXT FEW DAYS URGING YOU TO GET IN IF YOU NEED TO. THEY WILL HAVE MORE TEAMS GOING INTO AREAS WHERE THE HOMELESS ARE TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE STAYING HYDRATED AND IN THE SHADE IS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. EVEN THOUGH WE ARE USED TO BEING WARM WHAT WE EXPECT OF THE NEXT FEW DAYS IS NOT THE NORMAL. IT IS GOING TO BE ABOVE THAT AND DANGEROUS FOR SOME PEOPLE. >> IN THE EAST COAST, NEW YORK AND HAS BEEN MODERATE. AND NOW THAT SEPTEMBER HAS KICKED IN I FEEL THE TEMPERATURE IS GOING DOWN. ARE THESE TEMPERATURES NORMAL FOR YOU GUYS ON THE WEST COAST >> WE HAVE A SUMMER THAT LAST A LITTLE LONGER. WE SAY SEPTEMBER STILL FEELS LIKE SUMMER AND IT'S NOT USUALLY THIS WARM I THINK THAT IS WHERE THE PROBLEM IS. THE TEMPERATURES WILL BE HOTTER THAN WHAT WE ARE USED TO BUT THE PROBLEM IS WE TALK ALMOST EVERY YEAR ABOUT THE DROUGHT AND THINGS TRYING OUT. WE HAVE THESE HIGH TEMPERATURES AND WE WORRY ABOUT THERE BEING A FIRE IN ISSUES LIKE THAT BUT THAT IS ALWAYS THE EXTRA CONCERN. FIRE OFFICIALS ARE ON HIGH ALERT BECAUSE THEY WANT TO MAKE PEOPLE BE SAFE BUT THEY WANT TO MAKE SURE WE DON'T HAVE A WORSE SITUATION WITH HEAT. >>> FOR MORE ON THE FORECAST LET'S BRING IN JIM CAN TORI FROM OUR PARTNERS AT THE WEATHER CHANNEL. PHOENIX HAS SEEN 100 CONSECUTIVE DAYS AND COUNTING OF 100 DEGREES OR GREATER. WE SEE THE HEAT EXPANDING THROUGH SAN FRANCISCO AND PORTLAND. AND THEN OVER THE INTERIOR VALLEYS AS WELL. THE WET WEATHER IS IN THE EAST AS TEXAS HAS SOME BENEFICIAL RAIN AND TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING ON THE COAST. WE GO THROUGH TODAY AND TOMORROW AND IT EVENTUALLY MAKES ITS WAY THROUGH GEORGIA AND THE SOUTHEAST COAST. BEYOND THAT THE MODEL IS TRYING TO JET UP A TROPICAL SYSTEM BUT WE NOT SEEING ANY SIGNS OF THAT. HEAVY POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING. HERE COMES ANOTHER SHOT OF COOL AIR MAKING ITS WAY HERE JUST IN TIME FOR THE WEEKEND. YOU CAN WATCH THE WEATHER CHANNEL ON CABLE OR LIVE OR ON YOUR FAVORITE STREAMING DEVICES.
