Former Ohio State Buckeye Philly Brown talks the TRUTH about Urban Meyer!

it is May 20th 2024 I can't believe it was brought to my attention Friday at the live show first of all shout out to everybody everyone in the army that pulled up to yogis here every it's happened every time other than the spring game where I'm like yeah it's not really much going on in in the college football world like probably gonna be a small crowd the Army never disappoints there's no such thing as a small crowd when it comes to you guys um what a great time I had meet hanging out with and meeting all a bunch of you um it was a blast uh Chris and I had a blast Pat had a blast Justine this show as long as I was a coach at Ohio State to say that I'm grateful for you grateful for people that watch all the support Chris extremely grateful for Chris and uh his addition to the show excited about the growth with Justine and and anley and Pat it's been incredible um I was I was pulling numbers for the show and you know what we'll do it after after we get to it my man luky but I do want to go a little throwback a little coaches report I want to talk about college football the state of college football kind of the state of the Michigan program the state of Ohio State program some national quarterback conversation we're going to do the Philly interview and end with all your super chats if you if you're thankful for the last five years of Mena Sports throw a super chat in there so that we can have a little real conversation just hang out um I see Chris is in the chat and uh just one it's weird doing the show alone now that I've done it with Chris for two years but two just I'm I'm kind of emotional today I pulled it pulled the numbers we've had over 20 million 20 million listens to this show in five years which is incredible because eight million of them were last year so the growth is we had 12 million the first four years 8 million last year this year is certainly going to surpass that over 1.4 million dollar made off a [ __ ] podcast I don't say that to brag I don't give a [ __ ] [ __ ] I didn't even pay my myself a a a fraction of that because I've just been blown away with the support the super chats the views the listens pulling up at Live Events you know all the charity stuff we've done I'm I'm just blown away and and if you like the show please like the video I really want this one to do well because uh I'm excited about it I'm excited about the show the trajectory uh big things are coming for this platform so uh without further Ado I know he's out there I'm at home so I can hear him out there luky let him know what time it is [Music] Bubba well let's get to the show old school style solo I want to start off with this amazing video the Rebrand video that really man it makes me CH makes me choked up every time we play it every time I see it I've seen it 8,000 times I need you to like the video I need you to comment down below how how long you've been listening here's a little Rebrand video just to get us get the juices flowing get the mood right here Menace Sports 5year anniversary I really want to start off by saying thank you for tuning in whether it's out of support out of hate out of Interest or out of entertainment we appreciate you taking the time to see what this is all about here I am a former college football coach that was in some historically Monumental programs I have no desire ever to get back into coaching that gives me the greatest gift in the world freedom to say anything it is they need to level up I think we have some freaks in Menace Army I'm okay with that go watch the [ __ ] film but I appreciate you for riding with us Menace Army Menace [Music] out little demon at the end little menace to sports Rebrand video been a crazy five years who would have thought and I I I'm trying to upload it I'm hopeful that I can play it without copyright infringement but I if you haven't watched the Kevin Hart um whatever it was he he won won an award uh and and his speech at the end I mean I cried during it uh it sounded like I was speaking I'm gonna try to play it towards the end of this when we get to all the the super chats um after the Philly interview but man he he struck a cord with me and I'm hopeful that there's no copyright strike because I want to play it for you but if I can't I need you to go watch it even if you don't watch the whole the whole episode or the whole awards ceremony which was really funny Dave Chappelle um a bunch of people pulled up for it um [ __ ] Jerry Seinfeld kicked it off it was it really entertaining but if nothing else just fast forward to his speech because he talks about gambling and taking risks and just and his kids and it's truly man it it struck a cord with me but before we get to all that I I just want to talk a little bit about kind of the landscape of college football going into 2024 because a number of things are happening right transfer portal is a thing and then obviously there's attrition in college football we saw Michigan lose 44 Su super seniors all all this all these players are gone and you lose sight of like what is real what is the reality when it comes to let's say Michigan for example right Jim Harbaugh's gone JJ McCarthy's gone Kade MC I mean not Kade mcer just a lot of that team is gone but who returns because Michigan fans will be in this chat telling you they're going to be as good and beat the [ __ ] out of Ohio State Ohio State fans will tell you they lost everybody it's over and I want a couple things that I want to get to before we get to Michigan the first thing is this let's have a real conversation about will Howard because I feel like and Philly and I are GNA touch on this in a minute you get brainwashed by people that write articles do shows are on television and they're touted as some form of some version of an expert because that's their profession when in reality you don't have to be an expert to do what most of these people do so I want to talk about it because I've I guess my stance on will Howard has been very firm from the from the time I broke down his Kansas State video till spring ball talking to the people I talk to inside the program and just getting an accurate picture of Will Howard and when you look at it 31 quarterbacks are returning to power five football right that started last year 31 of them that's it in major power five football there's 31 quarterbacks that are going to be seconde starters will Howard being one obviously a difference school he's now at Ohio State was at Kansas State but we have a full body of work on him it doesn't mean that someone that's never started will not be a really good quarterback maybe even one of the best in the country that happens it has happened and it could happen again but will Howard out of those 31 returning quarterbacks was 23rd in adjusted completion percentage 21st in yards per attempt 18th out of 30 31 in turnover worthy plays so not top 50 in any of those analytics and I think that's important for a number of reasons now I know the arguments I know what we could say oh well that was Kansas State his o line was bad he didn't have the skill he's gonna have at Ohio State all that is true I would contend their pass Pro wasn't much worse but they're also playing Big 12 defenses and we know in the Big 12 they don't know how to play defense so 23rd of 31 adjusted completion percentage on deep balls he was 40th of 49 that that threw enough deep balls to count 40th of 49 he was 20 23rd of 49 on intermediate throws and 32nd of 49 quarterbacks on short throws so outside of the top 20 on deep balls I mean [ __ ] 40 is out of 49 doesn't throw a good deep ball and Spring ball confirmed that we've said that people view it as hate it's not hate it's just reality he has not thrown the Deep ball well will they work on it all summer and get better at it hopefully I mean that's the Hope right hopefully Ryan Day the quarterback Whisperer can get will Howard to throw a better deep Ball but he was 40th out of 49 last year 34.8% adjusted completion percentage and like I said 23rd intermediate 32nd on short throws we're going to get to the good news here in a minute he was the 21st best quarterback that is returning in college football Under Pressure 45% completion percentage here's where the good news comes in and and the point we're gonna make to wrap this up at the end Kyle McCord was 43rd he was 21st the 21st best quarterback Under Pressure Kyle McCord was the 43rd best quarterback Under Pressure he was 43rd out of 60 of them pay when they Blitz at 5.5 yards per attempt 43rd Kyle McCord Honda McCord 51st he was the 14th most effective quarterback versus Blitz defenses when defenses called a blitz he was top 15 of returning college football quarterbacks that's quite the improvement from Kyle McCord who is 34th in the country and and that brings me to the point and the only point that matters in Buckeye Nation for Ohio State fans will Howard is not this prolific transfer quarterback that's going to be a Heisman candidate and going to be this [ __ ] amazing player and that's okay could he could he improveed that much with the I don't know the training table and Mickey morate and and Ryan Day coaching him and throwing to a Mecca could he could he become one of the best quarterbacks in the country sure he could but the reality is this Ohio State fans want to win want to beat Michigan win the national championship they were six points away away from beating Michigan last year on the road and going to the playoffs and potentially winning it all six points away with Kyle McCord so the reality is this this roster outside of losing marf is better than last year so if you take all of that into account will Howard just has to be better than Kyle McCord specifically when the bullets are flying when teams Blitz them when we watched Honda McCord piss down his leg last year we will Howard to rise up and he was far better with lesser receivers lesser pass pro at Kansas State than Kyle McCord was at Ohio State with Marvin Harrison Jr with the talent composite the Blue Chips will Howard is good enough to win a National Championship at Ohio State he's good enough to beat Michigan especially at home with this roster in Michigan a little bit defet depleted and let's talk about that Michigan 2024 let's just be real here what do they replace because it's easy to to stargaze oh they got Mason Graham and will Howard back both phenomenal players but who's not back and I'll start by on offense other than Donovan Edwards I like coulston Loveland as a pass catcher but they have to replace all five offensive linemen they're losing their only blocking tight and Coulson Loveland can't block me he can't he can't block at all in the Run game AJ Barner was a incredibly value in the Run game and he was a a fifth rounder they're they brought Coulson LEL him back be good in the throw game Blake corum's gone and the Donovan Edwards show is really what we're talking about the only receiver returning samage Morgan minimal impact last year let alone they don't throw and then you have to replace J.J McCarthy a top 10 pick can Alex orgy throw that's yet to be seen but that's on offense all five offensive linemen their starting running back although they have a good replacement for him their best blocking tight end the Run game going to look totally different you you lose all five linemen Joe Moore awardwinning lineman and your one blocking tight end is it g to be the same are they gonna be able to air it out is Alex is it gonna be Wildcat all the time with Alex orgy how do they run the ball like they did the last three years they've lost everything up front and then on defense the front Seven's going to look vastly vastly different Chris Jenkins is out they won't miss a beat at D tackle but he was a really good player won't be a huge loss because Mason Graham's probably the best D tackle in the country and Kenneth Grant the 6'3 340b monster he's a freak of nature they both come back they'll be fine inside they're losing their leading sack getter and Jaylen herrell seventh rounder to the Titans Titans and they return the other defensive ENT Josiah Stewart second on the team in sacks last year he'll be a really good player and they're losing both of their in middle linebackers Junior coulston and Michael Barrett so up front they're losing let's say Kenneth Grant it's a wash with Chris Jenkins they're losing a dend their leading pass rusher that D end both linebackers so front seven looks different in the secondary they have to replace three of their starting five in the back end after Rod Mo Tores ACL the only two returning starters will Johnson and mcari pagee both good players but I think replacing Mike sandr still is going to be way harder than people want to lead on to and Keon Saab transferring is a massive loss especially in hindsight now that Rod Moore Tor his ACL that's a huge loss so I think the defense is going to be solid but they still lost a number of key pieces the offense is a huge thing this team Michigan ran the [ __ ] ball out toughed people and that was their MO they have to replace all five linemen their blocking tight end and their top running back and a top 10 quarterback so I think they're losing a ton I think Michigan fans have blinders on if they aren't at least a little nervous that they can't replace him with similar Talent similar production but that's neither here nor there it we we'll find out in the fall but I did want to talk about his staff for a minute because sh a lot of talk about Shon Mo replacing Jim Harbaugh but I want to talk about the rest of his staff what type of hires he made we'll start on offense with Kirk Campbell his offensive coordinator quarterback coach he was a quarterback coach last year so shiron knows him very well obviously thinks very highly of him he was an analyst in 2022 so merely two years ago Kurt Campbell was an analyst and don't get me wrong Ryan Day made this mistake and and Dabo made this mistake and I think shiron could be right could be wrong for every Brian Harline there's there's the other side of the pillow two years ago the guy was an analyst now he's running Michigan's offense with a lot of heavily heavy influence from Chiron Moore but it's not like bringing in Chip Kelly Grant Nome o line coach is 10th year with the program he's been with Michigan for 10 years was a tight end Coach the last two years and was an analyst before that for the previous whatever eight I seven because this is year 10 we all know Tony Alfred the running back's coach Buckeye fans know him all too well so I think that's that's a good hire we all know how I feel about Tony Alfred I think he's a good football coach you might disagree talk your [ __ ] have fun whatever Ron Bellamy the receiver coach from West Bloomfield High School he coached safeties in 2021 and receivers the last two years and if you watch Michigan I didn't even know they had receivers so we'll see how good of a Coach Ron Bellamy is this year if they can't just pound it every play and then Steve coula tight end was a former former analyst went to be the OC at UMass under Don Brown and returns to Michigan so three years ago he was an analyst bring in wink marale very common name very popular name in the NFL 20 years in the NFL as a coordinator linebacker coach XYZ his last year in college football was 2003 at Western Kentucky not that that matters I think he can translate very well to college football he's of the same philosophy of the previous two Jesse Min and going back the defensive coordinators at Michigan and his staff Lou espacito the dline coach comes from Western Michigan before that he was at Davenport and Ferris State certainly not a big name not a well-respected dline coach Like Larry Johnson doesn't mean he's not great but nothing resume is not that impressive and then Lamar Morgan the secondary coach he was at UL Lafayette Vandy and Houston before coming to Michigan again not not a strong resume Brian Jean Mary is a Charlie Strong guy was it Louisville was strong Texas was Charlie Strong South Florida with Charlie Strong Michigan in 2020 then he went to Tennessee 21 22 23 now he comes back to Michigan chiron's guy they work for one year at Michigan and that's his staff I think it's a good staff I think there's a lot of guys with a minimal resume that leave a lot to wonder which we'll find out how good they are soon enough but he brought in his guys and that's what a firsttime head coach needs to do and then JB Brown I'm sorry is a special teams coordinator he was promoted after being an analyst so a lot of chiron's cousins it looks like doesn't mean they aren't great doesn't mean it's not going to work out but it sure feels analyst heavy doesn't it I also one thing I want to talk about and then we'll get to Philly here in a second is I want to talk about the new college football right on one end you have dabos Sweeney 13 transfers out bringing zero in but I was looking through it and man you talk about the 2024 all transfer team Colorado 44 guys leave 39 come in that's 40 new players on roster Indiana 38 out 28 in Louisville 34 out 31 in there's some schools that really are utilizing the portal to I don't know flip their roster just a completely different team and and so I was curious I'm like all right what about some of the big schools USC Oklahoma Michigan Ohio State like what did that what did that look like USC had 30 guys transfer out 14 transfer in that's a net 16 player loss Oklahoma had 2 seven transfer out 15 transfer in that's a net 12 player loss Michigan 22 kids transferred out seven transferred in that's a net 15 loss and this one blew my mind and I'm gonna give you the list in a second Ohio state had 26 players transfer out and only eight transfer in that's a net 18 player differential that means there's 18 bodies that aren't there now I know no one that I'm going to list here maybe D Hayden because of there's a has a really bright future no one that I'm going to list is was going to be relevant this fall but losing 26 players and only bring in eight in that will have a residual effect over time here's who Ohio State lost and where they're going to play Jihad Carter went to NC State Enoch V vahi went to Washington Keon Graves went to Cal D Hayden Colorado Cedric Hawkins the safety went to Central Florida Sam Hart tight end went back to Colorado Jaden McKenzie the D tackle went to East Carolina Joe Royer went back went to Cincinnati the kicker Parker Lewis went to Arizona State Jer Brown LSU Noah Rogers NC State Julian Fleming Penn State I mean you start to add these up you're like damn they really lost a shitload of players in both portal Windows Jesse merco the punter went to vanderbelt cam Martinez to Boston College need to take a breath Jacob James the O lineman went to too Reed carico linebacker West Virginia omaria bore SMU Honda McCord Syracuse Vic Cutler L uh Louisville Kai Stokes went to Cincinnati Ryan Turner Boston College Evan prior Cincinnati chip trainum Kentucky Bryson Rogers came back to AIO state but he was in that [ __ ] for a minute and then the the players that no one talks about and don't get me wrong the PO it's not like it's over but Nigel Glover the kid that transferred in from Northwestern and went in the portal still in that [ __ ] still sitting there I'm sure he'll find a home it's probably going to be somewhere much smaller at this point but that's the other side of the transfer portal that is a reality right you can enter that and have nowhere to go Nigel Glover right now is homeless in the portal now Ohio State brought in four of the top 15 players in the portal Caleb DS Julian S quinshon jins and will Howard I think they obviously killed the portal this year and when I was looking at it I was like all right what does this look like like what does the landscape look like veterans matter right the number of returning starters you have matter to an extent especially if you were decent right and when you look at it Virginia Tech leads the country 22 returning starters they weren't very good last year so maybe they'll get better but returning 22 starters is massive Oklahoma state is one that I have my eye on 21 returning starters Ali Gordon the do Walker Award winner coming back could be a massive year for Oklahoma State football I mean Iowa 19 back Nebraska returning 19 starters granted they weren't great plus you add in Dylan rayola if he is all as advertised that could get interesting and the one I have my eye on that I think could have a sneaky almost uh henden hooker Tennessee year is the Kentucky Wildcats my Big Blue Nation 17 returning starters plus they added a number of transfers highlighted by Brock Vandergriff the quarterback that lost the job to Carson Becket Georgia chip trainum who I think is a really good back from from Buckeye Nation I think that's really important returning starters and then adding those pieces so watch out for Kentucky in the SEC East that could get interesting the other thing I wanted to talk about was returning production Washington my this year's TCU for me is 130th out 134 in returning production Michigan's 128th so let's talk about they didn't lose a lot they lost a shitload I'm not going to go through the whole list Bama's at 115 Florida State at 83rd Nebraska the third most production returning in the country but the team I want to talk about before as we finish out is Oregon kind of the I don't know the other power in the Big 10 that is going to contend Ohio State and obviously that game in Eugene Oregon is going to be massive 28th in the country returning production they have the 28th highest returning production six starters back on offense they added in Dylan Gabriel Evan Stewart the transfer portal class was outstanding they have four starters back on defense they added a number of really good players through the portal as well Oregon's going to be interesting to see I'm excited to do a deep dive into Oregon this summer when we preview kind of the uh the college football season so I just want to give you a little my insight just kind of things that I was reading today but I appreciate you pulling up almost a thousand in here if you could like the video it is our fiveyear anniversary show and so I had to bring in I don't know how to introduce Philly Philly was my first player at Ohio State and when I what I mean by that was when I got to Ohio State the receiver room was awful and there was one player who was undoubtedly the leader good or bad like if he was an [ __ ] the group was an [ __ ] if he was lazy the group was lazy if he went hard the group went hard and one of my favorite players I've ever coached he's the reason the sole reason that we flip that room into zone six getting Philly Brown to buy into what I was trying to teach what I was trying to do was the number one reason that the room transformed over the next six years without that it wouldn't have happened it was my my sole goal my first two years at Ohio State was get Philly Brown to drive the culture the way that I wanted it to and boy did he ever we all saw saw the result of that in 2014 so I'm going to get a quick word from our one of our partners then we'll get Philly in here and we'll talk a little bit of Urban Meyer era talk about Ryan Day a little bit and uh just get some great stories he's got a banger story about the Orange Bowl coming up so we'll be right back after this all right Menace Army every now and then we have an ad read that's just it's impactful and this is one of those so make sure carefully as I when I got fired in 2018 when I got divorced in 2015 I found out that my credit was dog [ __ ] it was bad right and I I spent three years rebuilding it to a point where I had solid really good credit and then I got fired and my credit once again turned a dog turn turned awful and so I've been on a mission to get back to having good credit because it's so important nowadays and I found an absolute hack one of the best things you can do to speed up the process and that is kickoff with no c k i k if you have bad below average or non-existent credit this is a great way to FasTrack sat here getting ready for this and Philly and I have been talking and we're going to do Bourbon and balls this week but we've been talking about getting Philly on the show he texts all the time like yo when am I on the show and I was sitting here like damn of all the [ __ ] people that I coached how the [ __ ] have I not put Philly on yet like if there's somebody who can deliver entertaining unfiltered content it's your ass well I appreciate you coming out man and I'm excited to just just talk you know this is the fifth anniversary of the show starting and so I thought what better way than to not really playing much and just [ __ ] reminisce talk talk [ __ ] kind of that's the brand right so how how you doing what's what's new with Philly Brown I'm good first of off let me say this congratulations all your success congratulations um on everything that you're going to accomplish moving forward thank the Army thank everybody that supported you and help you build this brand thank Chris even though I talk a lot of [ __ ] about them thank Chris for helping Drive the show forward and everybody behind the scenes driving the show forward that don't get you know the the flowers that they deserve I want to say thank you on behalf of the army and everybody we appreciate what y'all are doing to help one of my favorite people in the world flip this horrendous [ __ ] situation he was in and turn it into a positive and and you know I ain't gonna lie it's beautiful to see I'm happy as [ __ ] for you for I really appreciate it man I mean anything I can do for the show or whatever I'm here for it well the show's the whole the whole platform is about talking [ __ ] and being real so all you got to do is be yourself all you gotta do is do what you do all day every day know that I'm about I'm about to text him in a minute oh and it's we were just talking before the show it's amazing Sports media and how one the the the Litany of nonsense that is sports media just people that either won't tell the truth or don't [ __ ] know what they're talking about and what's even more fascinating and this is what we were just talking about is how the average fan will listen to that and because they're on TV because they get paid a decent amount of money it's like that is gospel that is the truth it has to be and they will argue using those points and it's really criminal is it because they get paid for it they're the gurus of the sport they're the the know it alls they're the these are the same people that that couldn't tell you what a ho shot was these are the same people that couldn't even tell you what a throwing window was like but they these people are are I I call them like like notebook coaches or notebook like people who just read and never actually played the position never actually like I mean I hate to say it but I mean Stan drton coaching receivers at Ohio State listen I've said it before and it's okay to say because I think Stan drton is a great football I love coach drton right and I've said it before but when when Trestle when what's uh darl Hazel left for Kent State yes I've told it before I texted Jim Trestle family friend like I I I didn't know him that well but my grandfather knew him as well as anybody I texted him like hey coach I'm interested in the job and I'm like I know I've only been a a full-time coach for a year I'm at Marshall that's not that sexy of hire but there's I got a chance here he text me back like you know what we're gonna go in a different direction and of all the people in the world he hired Stan Drayton and I'm sitting here like I know this man I know this man coach we spent I'm dead serious when I tell you this we spent so much time blocking it was unbelievable we our individual was blocking every day every day every day and I'll never forget one time real quick I don't want to I'm getting off topic already one day we went out to practice and I swear to you he beat up on Devin so bad this one day because you know everybody tried to say Devon was soft Deon was soft yeah like be if you knew Devin he really wasn't soft like he just like you really had to just motivate Devon but he wasn't a soft person no but one day drton came out there with the dang pad and was just beating on Deon and just beating on Deon and just beat like he was I'm like coach are we when we gonna start catching the ball work on a top end man we did running back stuff man I couldn't believe that oh it's hilarious but it was it was coach dton though I love coach drton as a person and you know what he's a great football coach just had no business coaching receivers all right I want to start off I want to talk about the question you always get you just said before the show and I always get I want to talk about not only Urban Meer but the transition because you were there for the the end of The Trestle era you were there for tattoo gate you were there for the Fiasco that was the Luke fickle year first thing I need to know is you get did you get a free tattoo I did I got a couple on my arm but you didn't get in trouble for it [ __ ] we got suspended so I guess I was one I paid for it you you paid not got directly in trouble for it but I paid the consequences with everybody else damn right you did you lost a Natty because of it absolute [ __ ] before we even get there how's that feel watching what the [ __ ] is going on in college football today I say it all the time like the same [ __ ] that we got in trouble for it's legal they're doing it it should have been legal this should have never had been like a thing like I guess you know they could tone down the nil a little bit when it come to like paying the players but as far as like gaining money from your likeness like there's times there's people walking around with 10 Brown 10 shazir uh one Roby and we walking around with $10 in our account like that makes that literally makes no sense and these colleges and universities and NCAA are are just they they make so much money off of us we've been we knew this at the time they making so much money off of us and and we not making anything but our PDM we get every two weeks to pay rent and then whatever you got left of that you gotta try to make it stretch for the next two it just made no sense you didn't have no choice it's wild like I used to say it all the time I think I said it in meetings with you guys like we used to go to on bull trips and you're sitting here like [ __ ] this ticket guy his wife and his two kids board the plane and you're like how about Philly's mom the [ __ ] is this guy's wife and kids coming on the team plane for and your mom has to [ __ ] drive across country or save up for a plane ticket and it's like this a dude that's actually playing this [ __ ] guy just sells tickets whole family on board is there a bigger so she remember we played on orange boow she drove down there [ __ ] Philly to Miami makes makes no sense and never mind the fact that selling tickets at Ohio State I mean that that's like a that that should be a former player job like don't have to do [ __ ] like Ohio state sells out every game what the [ __ ] the ticket guy do lit crazy but his wife gets to go to the Bowl game so shout out him but talk to me about the transition man talk to me about going from tattoo gate really that that disaster year in 2011 where Urban used it all the time I think you had what 15 catches and he oh gosh touted it as like the worst receiver room in America and then the transition to Urban what was it like going through all that so started with trust you got to remember so the first year my first year we had D posy we had um danne son and Bak they were the two starters and then I was the I was the slot receiver that year so with Trestle it was he was more of a players coach like he was more of a dude that like he wasn't a yeller he wasn't a screamer but everybody kind of respected him now I don't know if it was you know had a little bit to do with the Youngstown background you know what I'm talking about everybody respected him like nobody gave him [ __ ] nobody like everybody just loved Trestle and and he demanded things in a different way than Urban did you know what I mean it was kind of like the standard was already set like Urban was more the motivator Trestle was like the standard set like you got to do this [ __ ] or I don't know maybe You' be in the [ __ ] in the river or something then so going from from from Trestle to the whole t two gate man listen that year when I tell you it was new cars every day in the Woody it was new tattoo rappings every day it was you go to this player's house and and and there's 16 00 Panini cards there getting signed which I'm not saying is wrong which I fully I think it should have been a thing then but I'm not gonna lie that was the year going to that tattoo P which I ain't gonna lie I believe got rated yeah they got going to the tattoo Pilar you give them like a two autograss and they gave you a whole arm sleeve of tattoos man I that it was a good time especially you 18 years old you 19 years old that's a hell of a time that [ __ ] expensive expensive as [ __ ] I'm talk half a sleeve probably gonna cost you5 $600 you do two autographs and you get a whole that's a no-brainer man what for us was a no when we got introduced to that especially the people in my class like Roby and then kg and them was ahead of us so they was already like introduced to it so they were showing us the ropes man I'm not gonna lie that that that was a time like that was a time now was it worth the suspension no give me to Natty over that any day of the week but you know obviously hindsight 2020 we didn't know that that was going to happen that was a time but going from Trestle that interim year when everybody had got suspended and then ended up leaving it was miserable I ain't going to lie it it was and you know what's funny about that we didn't think that we were gonna be that bad like before the year because we had good players yeah you gotta think those same that same roster went 12 and0 the next year for pretty much the like the core like everybody was the same the core was was the same when Urban came his first year and we went 12 and0 so like when the year started we really didn't think that we were going to be that bad like you know we we had Joe Bowerman you remember Joe Bowerman 30 years old he used to invite us over drinking beers in his backyard he had a whole family wife he was like 30 Bowsman at quarterback but remember Braxton was a freshman yeah we all knew Braxton would be starting eventually but he was just the guy the scapegoat you know he was gonna get boot eventually and then Braxton was gonna get the game which ended up happening and Luke he didn't trust Braxton to throw the ball even though I think at that time Braxton was not not a great thrower but he was a good enough thrower his freshman year to for our leading receiver to have more than 15 catches every play was run or quarterback run run or quarterback run run or quarterback like no passes at all so it ain't even like if you probably look at the targets which I never even looked at I led the room with 15 catches or something like that I probably had 20 like three targets for the whole year right it's not like we were even throwing the ball like that that's what I used to say now I never said it Urban because he was when we first got there but I'm like don't get me wrong my group needed to get a lot better you needed to get better everyone needed to get better but I used to sit there like but let's not act like they didn't catch the ball because they just couldn't get open like they just didn't throw the [ __ ] thing like the ball and so it was a it was a great situation to walk into because it's like well damn if Philly has 20 catches I improved him like he he can have an ass year and it still looks like an improvement and I think I had that in our like first four games together oh yeah easy easy well it it also helped that you were pretty much the only one we wanted to throw to like every play in 2012 specifically 13 it was a little you know we wanted to throw it to Dev some Evan and but but 2012 it was like you or Jake and Jake was really a tight end that that just was pretending to play to move Jake to H he tried to move Jake to the SL oh he said that we didn't have no receiver so Jake is Jake Stone burner the in is playing a receiver position that requires some kind of speed and it didn't work at all no it lasted what we was like I get a back like no never mind change of plans but when I you want me talk talk about when Urban came in yeah talk about when Urban came in gosh we played Florida in that shitty bowl game the Gator Bowl and I don't remember the time but I remember Urban sent that message out to everybody and that we had that team meeting yeah it was early in the morning we had that team meeting and it was probably it was like the day after the bowl game like he wasted no [ __ ] time yeah so couple people came late couple people didn't even show up um we all got in that meeting we a know what to expect and Mickey was in there first and um Mickey was like standing there like some kind of [ __ ] drill sergeant which I love Mickey now like he's great [ __ ] dude but he's standing there like he was a drill sergeant irvan comes walking in and just starts bashing us didn't introduce your some of those dudes in there probably didn't know who the [ __ ] he was start going the [ __ ] off how we sucked how we was this how we was that how we couldn't wear Ohio State gear how we didn't earn the right to be in these seats or in the Woody told us we had to be there hell week was it the very next it might have been the very next day or two days later we had to be there at like 400 am or 5 AM hell week uh with no Ohio State gear on yeah like all right [ __ ] it you know let's get it like this dude think he gonna break us yeah [ __ ] him he he just got here I don't give a [ __ ] who you are you just got here we've been here we gonna show you like we ain't a bunch of [ __ ] like that's that was like how we were when we left that meeting like [ __ ] him we fin him so we we got back to the dorms or whatever everybody like getting ready for the [ __ ] like yeah you know we gonna show out tomorrow like we got new coaches new time whatever next morning we wake up bow everybody got their you know everybody comes when you wake up in the morning from early workouts you just throw whatever on you know you thinking I get in there I go to my locker grab my Loop my clothes I'm nice and warm people got the shorts on the hoodies on so we get to the thing and the door is not working to get into the Woody it's not working so people trying to what the [ __ ] going on and the side gate is open to the field so we remember like what the [ __ ] like and they then somebody came to said y' not outed in the Woody and we looking like what mind you people have shorts on it's January in [ __ ] Columbus Ohio and they like y not allowed in the Woody y'all can't work y'all have to go around onto the field because that's where we're about to be working out at when I tell you that was the most like the first day it was the mer it was the most awful [ __ ] that I've ever done in my life shorts on t-shirts on hoodies on in the [ __ ] Turf is Frozen Frozen it's frozen we're doing bear craw I say barw pullup on that Frozen ass pullup bar we're doing roads we doing all for just 200 yard people are crying people are quitting people are doing all kind of bull [ __ ] when we left that that first day we was like he ain't goingon to get us again remember the next day everybody came in hoodies and gloves and [ __ ] like that and then from there on I feel like those next we did it for like a week those next four days we was kind of on Urban ass like yeah we was kind of like everybody was like giving him [ __ ] back like not disrespectful but like we want this [ __ ] like this [ __ ] ain't hard like you know what I mean like show him that we can work you get what I'm saying and then slowly we was able to get back into the Woody and and and you know obviously one one you got to get into the locker room remember you when you would go to the waight room you had to go in the Woody and right to the weight room if you weren't like approved to go in the locker roomer yeah you couldn't shower so if you had the 8 AM class you had to go to class smell like [ __ ] it was [ __ ] terrible and I think what's important big picture especially in hindsight is that was all intentional like this man is really a psychological genius like he wanted you guys to say [ __ ] you Urban in your head not disrespectfully to his face but he wanted you to be like man who the [ __ ] do you think I'mma show you what we're about like it was all a motivation tactic and it worked like he wanted you to say [ __ ] this guy funny it took it took a while to realize that like it literally took me probably a full year it didn't take me till 2013 to realize like after me and him talked and he told me he was a psych major and all this stuff it took for all that for me to be like okay so now I get what kind of games that you play or what kind of that's why 2013 I was a little different towards him than I was in 2012 when he first got there 2013 like bro cut the [ __ ] like you're not about to get in my head I know what I gotta do get the [ __ ] out my face yeah like I I know what this is I used to tell coaches that all the time especially new coaches I'm like listen once you understand him this [ __ ] is cake like he's gonna say some outlandish [ __ ] but when you understand what's behind it you're like man whatever say whatever you want like I know what you're doing we're good I tell I tell people all the time I had a son I wouldn't mind him playing for urban Meer no I wouldn't because he's going to challenge him he's going to bring the best out of him and at the end of the day it's about competing competing if you don't want to compete then one you don't need to be here and two you're a [ __ ] let's just call it what it is you're a [ __ ] if you don't want to compete you're a [ __ ] in my eyes and that's what Urban was about if you the back up he calling you ass he calling you terrible why so you can go out this next practice and light this [ __ ] on fire to light a fire to the starter so at the end of the day everybody's getting [ __ ] better at the everybody everybody everybody I I like this tactics when I look back at it now great I mean there's times where it sucks going through it but like in hindsight you're like you know what that [ __ ] Works [ __ ] practices that's [ __ ] going over starting over practices because we ain't practicing good oh gosh or staying till [ __ ] midnight training camp stay until midnight because we can get something [ __ ] right oh yeah the walkthroughs oh the [ __ ] walkthroughs stay it after those those are real productive you know what I was laughing at the other day it's funny is um I was talking to somebody about football xes and those remember when Urban would walk into our meeting room and he would ask a question he would be like Philly and and uh Evan you can't answer yeah so that would just make everybody else just kind of go oh [ __ ] because you know Urban was like like when he came in he would ask like like a x and O questions about the thing but he knew me and Evan knew everything right so if somebody came and ask a question like Herman or somebody like that the room with the on me or Evan we'll just blurt it out and say it he would walk in and go Philly and um Evan you can't answer and everybody would just go like Fu a [ __ ] F but I mean at the same time it's like all right walk in the quarterback room and say only Cardell can answer what the [ __ ] that gonna sound like ex like somebody way in the back like like hey Kenny gon and Braxton you can't answer this let me ask a hard question well the [ __ ] third string quarterback's gonna be like I don't [ __ ] know he was he was crazy [ __ ] I ain't G to lie he used to love it but his one of his biggest tactics was to try to get players to kind of fight him for their coach right it was it was the whole unit building right like he wanted to build strong yeah he wanted power the unit strong units and he didn't care if players hated him as long as they were like man [ __ ] that guy like we're gonna go we're gonna go show him we can play well for our coach to give him a middle finger like that was a big part of his motivation tag 100% 100% I'll never forget the the time on the practice field where I thought you two were gonna fight though and I I to this day I don't know what it's about he just decided that day to come over and [ __ ] with you he he's I I forget exactly what he said in the warm-ups like verbatim but it was something along the lines of like like I wasn't holding somebody else accountable yeah and I looked at him like you're the coach and he didn't like that part when I told him that I remember that my response was you the coach like you ain't holding him accountable and he didn't like that because you know obviously those years I was the leader of the room but that was just my my rebuttal like my quick rebuttal I knew that I was supposed to hold them accountable and I was but I just had to get back at him that's why that quick response was you the coach yeah and he kind of took that as a damn I ain't doing my job that's when we started drawing back and forth and he was like you can go I like [ __ ] I walk the [ __ ] off this field I don't give a damn because at that time obviously our room wasn't as talented as they are today if I if I left we was probably [ __ ] yeah you had a lot of Leverage that's what I'm saying today they're good they don't give a f I will never forget it because I I learned a valuable lesson that day and I'd learned it before that I learned it when Percy Harvin beat the [ __ ] out of our receiver coach I was like listen you got you gotta be careful with players right like like just make sure you don't put yourself in a corner because then what are you gonna do and he looked at me and was like are you going to tolerate this and I'm looking at i'm like [ __ ] you started this [ __ ] we tolerate it you're tolerating it what the [ __ ] you mean am I supposed to do yeah oh oh you want me to interject and save you you're the [ __ ] head coach like what do you mean oh but it it was all the motivation tactic well 2012 obviously we started the year and beat the [ __ ] out of Miami Ohio but but we didn't look good they just were Miami of Ohio we beat Central Florida somewhat handedly and then beat Cal on a [ __ ] busted cover two where Devon got behind the defense for no reason like they just gifted us that game and then we go play UAB and that was probably the tough the the roughest game that I've been a part of and then the [ __ ] flipped and you could feel it and I know Urban always talks about Michigan State the raise the water and like Buy in rip your chest open all that other [ __ ] but like something happened when we got into Big 10 play and I don't I still don't know entirely what it is I think it is partly though go ahead I think I know what it was I think those first like you're we're talking 2012 right yeah yeah I think those first four to five games the coaching staff was trying to figure it out I don't think that they trusted us wholeheartedly to just open up the Playbook on offense or open up the Playbook on defense it was still like let's just get our feet wet versus these you know quote unquote ass teams you know we're still gonna win but we can't like open because you remember at one point in 2012 I was playing running back remember he put me at running back and he did a swing pass to me threw it to me out the back field like yeah and that was Urban's play call it was Philly go to running back just run a swing run the ball like what the [ __ ] but that like we were like in that kind of mode like we were trying to figure out and then I think once the Big 10 like games came around it was like we can't do that no more like we're playing quality teams we we have to open this [ __ ] up you know and and I feel like ultimately that's what happened because it's like what the [ __ ] we got to lose this team was was under 500 last year like we're already winning because we're five and0 what the [ __ ] we got to lose now and if you go and three although we would say it's a failure like the public would be like wow that's quite an improvement from six and seven the same roster yeah essentially with the same roster and and and I feel like that was the difference what did did you have a theory on that I think that's what I I I know that's what it was being on the other side it was it was really Urban trusting his coaches his and then the coaches trusting the players and definitely vice versa definitely the players buying in and trusting the coaches but it was full force starting with the head man he didn't trust [ __ ] he didn't trust his coaches he didn't trust the players and that [ __ ] permeates throughout the program like if he doesn't trust my players I kind of do but I'm like damn I'm getting told all the time that my players can't be trusted all day long in meetings and it's like I go to my meeting room I'm like [ __ ] I gotta wipe that [ __ ] out of my head because he's he's literally setting a tone that's not gonna work right right all right we got to keep going I gotta get a word from a partner though this is this is great conversation and we still got a shitload to talk about so we'll be right back after this I think I can speak for all of us when I can say we want to have better sex even if you have the best sex love our ad reads here is that a [ __ ] Michigan pullover yeah I had I it was a bet I lost the bed on the Natty and now [ __ ] that now it's on a commercial I gotta rrecord it I got to re-record all right so 2012 obviously go 12 and0 we all know what would have happened if we played Notre Dame the two undefeated [ __ ] awful they were they were not I mean not any good and and I to be fair I think we' have lost to but they had one loss so they wouldn't have made the BCS yeah right right so it doesn't matter that's a national champ one game you never [ __ ] know yeah you never how that [ __ ] goes one game it's not like the NBA where there's seven games one game you never you literally never [ __ ] know we could come out and play like we did versus UAB or we could come out and [ __ ] play like we did versus Michigan that year when the defense was on like you you just never [ __ ] know honestly yeah you never know but I do know we' beat the [ __ ] out another day that's a fact I remember we were sitting there in the door watching this [ __ ] like it's no [ __ ] way there ain't no way no way we just lost the natti for no Reon we had a window in there that we could have won 2012 we could have won 2013 and they could have turned around and won 2014 and should have won 205 should have won 20 so we had a window in there where we could have won four straight [ __ ] years crazy crazy what could have been you know but then you go on we go on 2013 and obviously a much in my opinion a better I mean really we didn't lose much I mean we had pretty much the same team just a year better right I we lost a couple pieces but nothing nothing that wasn't nothing we couldn't replace though because we had remember we had [ __ ] I mean we had Bosa oh yeah I tell people all the time I'll never forget it at Purdue I've told the story 50 times you probably watched the show while I told the story we're playing playing Purdue I'm trying to [ __ ] coach you you're watching the Jumbotron and he did some sack somebody and I'm in the middle of trying to tell you something about the next drive and you looked at me like hey y'all better use this [ __ ] he's three and done literally and he told us that too he told me that but like he didn't even [ __ ] practice I don't think before he told me that he I was like talking to him one time he was like yeah man I'm trying to be three and done I was looking at him like who the [ __ ] are you and we got on that practice field I was like that [ __ ] three and done that [ __ ] out of here he is gone gone so we go we go 12-0 in 2012 12-0 in 2013 and I'll never forget it we beat Michigan tyus intercepts the two-point conversion you know and at this point there's a Cockiness about this team right an overconfidence and I'll never forget it we're on the bus we watched what Auburn return the field goal for for a touchdown to beat Bama take down Bama and it we were third in the country I think and so that would have put us up in the top two win and get in yeah win and get in and the the bus is going [ __ ] crazy like cheering this [ __ ] is rocking and I'll never forget you stood up and just yelled at the whole offense and basically we're like hey I don't know what the [ __ ] you were cheering about we still have to go win a game yeah like y'all over here cheering like we won something we gotta go win a game and damn sure if we [ __ ] lost [ __ ] lost we I feel like that that year we were battle tested man but we were winning so many games that we were like we we were just I wouldn't say we were cocky but we were super conf confid like we were super confident that nobody could beat us even we were playing Iowa that year I know you you remember that year we were playing Iowa and we look like dog [ __ ] in the first half and and but nobody was like panicking like I got up during halftime and I like and I was you know you know did what I did cut some people out whatever the case may be but no like there was never a feeling like we were gonna [ __ ] lose though like we was always on the sideline like we know we're gonna [ __ ] win even during the Michigan State game we're like we know how this [ __ ] goes like right play a tough game we're gonna [ __ ] win like that's how it goes and I just think that we were just that year we weren't humble enough like we were hungry we were confident but but but we never actually we we weren't humble enough and that [ __ ] started with Urban I ain't gonna lie he he took us he he he took us to that place where he would go it's a big game because of us and it's a big game because it's not them [ __ ] them they're just you know he would you know he would get like talk [ __ ] about the other team and [ __ ] you're that [ __ ] trickles down to your players and makes your players start acting like that so we was like [ __ ] them like they ain't [ __ ] game because of us exactly and I and I remember I said that one time on an interview and and I remember I start getting a bunch of um messages from the other teams I think it was Northwestern yeah um game day and we had the interview before and I was like you really think game day would be here if we weren't and I got a shitload of messages and from Wester fans the smartest insults that you would ever hear half [ __ ] I couldn't even process like equ and [ __ ] there were insults it was ridiculous oh [ __ ] that's hilarious so but Urban couldn't say [ __ ] because he I mean that's I'm repeating what he said right well that's that's the thing right you get so much messaging from a head coach or a program and then you go to an interview and say something like you've been trained you've been conditioned to say that [ __ ] oh you didn't want me to say that but that's all you say every day so obviously lose that game go down to the orange bowt and we're one no deep throw away from beating uh Taj Boyd and Clemson but it was it was a it was a shootout game I mean the offense played really well Braxton obviously threw that one pick that should have been the game-winning touchdown to you that I've brought up several times you broke the DB off in in zero pressure and Braxton just [ __ ] didn't put any air on it threw that [ __ ] right to the linebacker yeah man and we were missing a lot on defense too remember we were missing Christian that year we missing Ro we we had who the [ __ ] did we have starting I think Armani Reeves was starting you remember Armani Oh yeah oh gosh and we just played 10 yards back and Sammy disc screens took him for 15 took him for 20 took him for 15 took him for 20 took 15 but I still remember that play I'm like [ __ ] there are no deep yeah this is a [ __ ] freshman safety I'm about to kill him oh I I couldn't believe they did it you remember how much emphasis we put on no deep like like practic and [ __ ] like if it was no deep we [ __ ] laughing like this I'm looking over there like yo don't run a [ __ ] post this my touchdown like to the other receiver on the side I was like yo yeah call call him in don't call me I remember the quarterback would signal one of the receivers in to come zero and I like don't don't you dare don't you dare [ __ ] call me in this is my post he [ __ ] he call you in and throw it to hirman the [ __ ] come on man I never forget man when I got to the top of that route and I put that right foot in the ground and I'm said oh I'm going it's over and I'm looking in the air waiting for the ball to like to track it yeah and I look back and it's to the linebacker right to him I said oh my God and if you can see my reaction on the tape like or on the film you could see my reaction after winter I start jumping like I was mad as [ __ ] I was mad as [ __ ] because IAD I want to beat them so bad so bad but the orange Bowl's a fun place man Miami that bowl game it's it's a it's a great trip hell yeah and we didn't even tell you the half of it I didn't tell you that uh this might be the your first time hearing this but [ __ ] it um the Orange Bowl so we were [ __ ] you remember Sher was from down there right oh yeah and you remember that media day gosh you can pull it up on YouTube I'mma [ __ ] send you the video You're Gonna crack up laughing after I tell you the story we had media the next morning and we had a practice right but it I think it was probably two days before the game and we went the King of Diamonds we went before curfew I think curfew was at 10 I think 10 or something like that and we had our pum so we went to King of Diamonds everybody know King of Diamonds is strip club down there the big strip club we're all under AE so we all walk up Shir lived down there Shir got us a car somebody come pick us up in the car it was me Carlos Christian shazir and like two other people it was like the PE the the the ones that hung around maybe Kenny G was there I'm not sure Jordan Hall like the ones the ones that if you got suspended we'd lose by 50 basically yeah basically basically basically outside of Braxton Braxton didn't go outside of Braxton so we went before curfew right we went like 8:00 and we all know the strip club don't start going crazy till probably midnight yeah we went like 8 we were in there um they were like oh it's the you know it's the Ohio State team you know just let them in you we're all [ __ ] underage who gives a [ __ ] let them in you know so we got in there and it was eight o'clock so really wasn't like going crazy yet but we was in there throwing ones and [ __ ] drinking getting drunk so we like oh [ __ ] we gotta make it back for curfew we fly back to the hotel 10 o'clock we make it for curfew we all texting each other in the group chat like yo y'all want to go back yo y'all want to go back cuz I remember uh somebody told the bouncer as we were leaving or it was Trick Daddy because it was trick Daddy's Club yeah because they were like yo you know man good luck whatever and somebody was like we'll be back so when we got in the hotel at the curfew it was probably like 10:30 10:45 like y'all want to go back we was like [ __ ] it so we all sneaking out we're like [ __ ] it we're sneaking out so we all snuck out that big ass hotel that we were staying in the Hollywood yeah We snuck out got back in that same car went back to King of Diamond we were probably there to about 4 4:30 a.m. this is the funny part right we're driving back up all drunk as [ __ ] smelling like black and miles and all kind of [ __ ] like drunk as [ __ ] we're driving up to the front of the hotel and um what's her name Shelly his wife Shelly Meyer is walking out of the hotel so there was like six or seven of us in a tight ass car just leaned back so she couldn't [ __ ] see us and we all jumped out the car and scrambled around to the back of the hotel well here's what I know hman was there Jeff was there I know this but Jeff go say go you about say this is this is one of the stories he told me at boren's house he said we were we decided to go out because we're we're looking around like they can't suspend all of us like that's literally what we said though that I swear to God and it's funny you said that because that was literally like our [ __ ] moment like we were trying to like ah should we do it should we not and I forget somebody said I and I think it was Jeff that was like I mean they can't [ __ ] suspend all of us like this is like eight of the top 10 players right here like they can't Carlos like what the [ __ ] who's gonna play offense so we were like [ __ ] it [ __ ] it and we all just [ __ ] and you could see the interview the next day it was like six seven a or s a media me and Carlos is in there like this just talk I'm G send you the video it's [ __ ] hilarious oh send me the video I gotta see this [ __ ] it's [ __ ] hilarious oh God all right well before we get out of here because we we we we still got time I want to get your opinion now you're on a different side of things you're now you're a former Buckeye right former former Ohio State great you Urban left the program and now Ryan Day walks in I just want your opinion kind of you know not to be negative but just like what is what do you see this different and where do you think they can get back on brand yeah um I mean not negative I would call it real to be honest with you I feel like we've gotten very soft like the urban era was like it was like toughness like it was everything was about being tough being downhill being in your face punching them in the face and I feel like now it's all about being finesse being like you know like real like there's no real like there's no dogs on the team there's no like because they and dogs you can be molded into a dog but we don't have a dog coach right now like the coach is not a [ __ ] dog and if your coach is not a dog it's hard to make your players or turn your players into dogs like that's where it starts at just talked about is the the top of the food chain is the [ __ ] coach if your coach is a [ __ ] like like you always say a square jaw [ __ ] dude your players are gonna be that same way Dan Campbell look at the [ __ ] Lions the lions are a [ __ ] organization but look at Dan Campbell and and that [ __ ] is [ __ ] contagious and I feel like now when you watch Ohio State there it's they're they're [ __ ] soft not all of them because some of them dudes I think are real [ __ ] dudes but I think the team in general I wouldn't say that that's a tough football team right it's the culture really it's it's not that it's not that anyone I can't find one player where I'm like that dude is soft I mean I could last year but he transferred but other than that it's it's a bunch of dudes that are probably tough dudes but the overall culture and just the the the mentality is not like a punch you in the face mentality right like I'm going it's more I'm gonna [ __ ] like I it's hard to explain but it's it's definitely not I'm gonna punch you in the [ __ ] face that's for sure not the culture which that it it's that's what to me is missing there's no [ __ ] dog I'm going to literally punch you in the face every [ __ ] play until you quit what her used to say no M no Moss we determine when the [ __ ] is over and I don't think that's a thing no more like no Moss that's proba it's not a thing and you can tell it's evident like you can tell people don't play [ __ ] hard people are lazy like we we went off skill nowadays oh yeah that's my in my opinion when the skill is equal we lose when we play in a a top five team when we played Michigan the last three years when they got you know Conor stallion but last year let's just say yeah when the skills equal we lose because we can't just win off of skill these teams that are beating us have skill and toughness that Georgia team we lost to that was a tough [ __ ] team hell yeah the Michigan team we lost to last year that was a tough [ __ ] team that Michigan offense last year let's I of [ __ ] the defense in counter the offense that was a tough [ __ ] team so it's like when we play these tough teams and we can't just depend on skill because the skill level is equal we [ __ ] lose yeah you got a will to win at some point when you play an equal team you got to have the the will to win like it comes down like all right we both have great players we both can make plays we both can get open we both can cover like at some point somebody has to have that extra bit of toughness and motivation to say all right we're equal I'mma [ __ ] you up exactly and I we don't see that no more like we just don't see that even like like the little [ __ ] that you used to preach like all the time like first play of the game we could we calling a run play I'm just going to [ __ ] run full speed into this [ __ ] corner just hitting for no reason just to let them know like it's about to be one of them games like yeah this what's coming now walking off the ball and [ __ ] like that like on like like come on bro like and [ __ ] like that that's not winning football no if I had a million plays when I played if I would have walked off the ball they wouldn't have been touchdowns for Carlos they would for the tight end or the rod Smith or Jordan Hall like that [ __ ] all this [ __ ] is is it's the ultimate team sport you look at s Fran look look how they play on [ __ ] offense you see iuk you see dbo you see Jennings 50 [ __ ] yards downfield blocking for the running backs the tight end like that [ __ ] is contagious man then that's the toughness part that you could click on the fil and be like oh [ __ ] like this is a [ __ ] team we about to play against like and you don't see that [ __ ] no more like it's not priest it's not like nobody's being held accountable because if they was you you would do it I love Mar to death like nobody was a bigger Mar fan than than me at Ohio State but it's like at some point as a coach you have to be like I don't give a [ __ ] who you are bro like you're the leader whether you want to be or not you're the [ __ ] leader you have to set the tone I need you to go out here on this first play vers Michigan and I need you to fake a release and I need you to punch will Johnson in his face once he get off bounds and knock him on his ass y That's the [ __ ] tone for the game cause then fight you make him fight you auk is going to do it and the rest of them are going to do it Fleming would have did it like like that's just how that [ __ ] Works they see oh [ __ ] Marvin just did that now we gotta do it yeah right if Marvin did it what the [ __ ] your excuse exactly and that's where it starts at and that's where I liked your coaching like you challenged me so much and I respected it because you knew if I did it everybody else was going to do it and that was it that was it your leader has to be held accountable to do [ __ ] and I don't think that that's there anymore no or the real hate for Michigan I don't think I think I don't like last year let me just say this it seemed like a guy who was playing in for his first time was the most passionate out there and I'm talking about Osa yeah Osa to me was the most like he was the guy out there that was like [ __ ] this team like y'all throwing at me y'all crazy as [ __ ] I'm talking [ __ ] I'm pushing them out and this was his first time playing in the [ __ ] game right it it was blowing my mind that nobody else had no real passion out there but him but you could tell play all year long you could tell that [ __ ] is a dog like you could just tell like oh he's got that [ __ ] to him in that [ __ ] spring game like he is a [ __ ] dog like that's one dude on that team like that's a dog right there like he can make up for that Talent Gap with his with his like I'm not going to [ __ ] lose mentality like he has that mentality like yeah he's he's he's a good player but he's not a great cover corner you know what I'm saying like he can he can gauge that skill gy with his Competitive Edge I'm not gonna let you [ __ ] beat me and I'm gonna do it if I gotta [ __ ] hold you if I gotta push you out of bound you're not [ __ ] scoring no and I I can live with that I'll take that any [ __ ] day of the week oh no doubt a tough [ __ ] give me six more of them exactly six more of them exactly man that [ __ ] drove me crazy watching him last year be the like the real the only person that had that much energy and passion for them right I I don't disagree I mean we'll see you know people can change culture I mean we saw Michigan change right Michigan just laid down at the end of the year and I mean they never just let you win but it was like at the end of the day you knew Ohio State Ohio State was gonna Prevail Ohio state was gonna pull it out like they're a tougher program they are the the more talented program I mean every box was checked and something they flipped a switch something changed and they sure play like they hate Ohio State now they do 1,000% they do and they play tougher let's just call it what it is they play a lot [ __ ] tougher than us they pay and that's not even just the players the [ __ ] coaches going for it on fourth down in your territory going for it like they don't give a [ __ ] they play a lot less conservative they play like [ __ ] Ohio State we're playing to win we're not playing not to lose y we're playing to go out and win this [ __ ] ourself we're not trying to play mistake free football [ __ ] y'all and that's how it should be and I think that the coaches are soft and I think the players are soft too that's just what it is it is what it is and until until proven otherwise that's what their reputation is right you might not be but your reputation says you are so you are exactly exactly and so you're not maybe maybe they've had enough maybe they come out this year oh [ __ ] me too I'm tired of this [ __ ] man I never seen so many Michigan hoodies and [ __ ] in my [ __ ] life everybody's a [ __ ] Michigan Manan there's no doubt I appreciate you coming on man like I said we're gonna we're going to plan on doing bourbon the ball tomorrow night and we're going to fire off a couple of them over the next week or two because one it's always entertaining to have multiple kind of opinions and Philly is one of the smartest football coaches I've been or football players I've been around so he'll bring a great insight and we're g to break down some Michigan games I'm still waiting to get some film with Philly playing waiting on my video plug but in in the meantime in the meantime we could talk ball yeah I'm ready I'm locked in I appreciate you having me though I appreciate y'all hell yeah we'll do it again for sure I need to get I need to get Chris in here with you so you you two can talk [ __ ] [ __ ] akan population three I appreciate you Philly thanks for having me thanks for having bro what makes this platform different from others outside of the fact we're unfiltered and I actually worked in college football and might might know a little bit about the sport and about the game is we open the doors and open the windows and let you inside under the hood in college football and the best way to do that is our film breakdowns if YouTube would let us put them out publicly we would make it all free but they diging us with a copyright every time Bourbon and balls our offseason project every Tuesday night I pick a bourbon and at 800 PM Eastern Standard time we go live and do a live breakdown interactive you ask questions it's all 22 coaches film so it's not film you you can see anywhere else it's not TV copy this is truly what coaches use what I used for 15 years of coaching college football and we break down a topic we've done a will full will Howard breakdown breaking down his game what he was going to add to the Buckey we did the Michigan National Championship Game there's over 200 game breakdowns in our library if you want to learn college football at an in an entirely different way it's only 20 bucks a month or the best deal if you want to do it is you can lock it in right now with a 10% discount on patreon.com menis to sports and you can get a whole Year's worth that'll include all next season when we break down up to five games a week we really give you the insight and information you need to be knowledgeable about college football because several times a a sack will happen and you watch on TV you're like God this o line sucks then you get the coaches film and watch and they blocked the Five Guys they were supposed to block the running back just released and was supposed to block a blitzing Corner was really on the running back but in your mind you think the o line sucks it's always good to have quality information and it's entertaining as [ __ ] drink a little bourbon hang out with us all offseason and then get ready for the 2024 college football season possibly a nice little Run for the Buckeyes on patreon links in the bio come hang out with us there you have it there you have it my man Philly Brown um I owe really I think a lot of people not just me I mean current players Brian Hartline myself uh Paris Campbell Johnny Dixon's Terry McClaren Michael Thomas's a lot of them and it's you know it's kind of you pay tribute to those that came before you Philly really is the one that started the transition from what that receiver room was into what we watched today he's the one that that set it off and good a great interview really enjoyed having him on we'll definitely have him on again his Insight is second to none smart as [ __ ] very very intelligent [ __ ] dude and especially when it comes to football I mean just really knows what he's talking about so we're gonna knock out some super chats I just am very reflect today uh five years man five years doing this show it started just like this well it started with me and my brothers first and then it became just this me sitting in this studio at my house knocking out shows alone kind of almost like a psych ward and I I try I was gonna play the Kevin Hart video from his uh special whatever that Mark Twain award that he won but YouTube dinged it so I can't um but the me the main message that he gave was is this people think gambling is bad I had a choice after I got fired in 2018 a number of choices right could have kept my mouth shut worked my ass off to get another opportunity in coaching probably going to be at a very small school I mean I got a couple job offers from very very small division one schools or bet on myself and I chose the lad I said you know what my life's already in a blazing right it's already on in Fuego it's already on fire it's already a burning boat the ship is going to crash right the plane was falling I said [ __ ] that if I'm gonna go out I'm gonna go out on my own accord I got something to say and that was the beginning of Menace Sports and I appreciate all your super chats if you get them in now we'll get to them before I have I get out of here tomorrow I have another special edition uh show kind of a two-part five-year anniversary series um mainly because tomorrow how about this he wants he hear something really cool and and I'll follow this up with the other part of the Kevin Hart speech that was so impactful but my 14year old uh they're doing a project at school they have to give a speech to the eighth grade before they kind of graduate and go on to high school and they have to do a speech on who their hero is and my 14-year-old son uh came up to me we were driving to Cleveland and he said hey Dad I got to do this speech on on who my hero is and I was like oh that's cool any thoughts like I was just going to help talk him through and he was like like yeah I want to do it on you and you talk about Blown Away um really really cool so he's given that speech tomorrow I would not miss it for anything in the world not this show not anything um so we will have another a show tomorrow it is really gonna be I'm excited about it it's Eric lter coming on to um to talk you know just talk about training youth athletes and also a bunch of trestle stories from his time as the head strength coach at Ohio State but yeah man it blew me away and and the sad part about it the sad reality is the next thing was he said I just don't know what to do about Mom and I was like Mom what's Mom gonna do and he was like oh she's gonna flip out if she finds out I pick you as my hero I was like dude here's all here's my best advice for you if someone has a problem with a boy picking his dad as his hero that person has the problem you don't and so I'm really proud of him I'm really excited for it um and probably my my greatest honor my favorite honor but going back to the Kevin Hart speech um what he said it just struck a chord with me one because he gambled on himself he bet on himself and and and he made it right he he arrived he you know achieved success and that's that's something I did no idea what that meant no idea where what path that would take me down but the other thing he said which is so poignant is it led him to the right house the right wife the right kids and that's what I have I have my family is super supportive couldn't have done it without him I found the right partner to do life with to attack life with in Justine and my kids are the greatest thing ever they really are um I would not not consider coaching again ever because of the time you're away from your children and there is no life in me without my kids my kids are my life they always will be my life and I'm so thankful um that the show is taken off that you guys watch that you guys enjoy it and I'm thankful that I'm able to do this and be a dad and just every sporting event hero speeches like man just take it in this [ __ ] goes like that my 14year old was two when I got hired at Ohio State two lukie's three right now I feel like that was yesterday and at the same time a million years ago seeing him run on the field before the game like he's 14 about to be in high school this [ __ ] goes so fast so make sure you enjoy it make sure you enjoy it but let's get to some of these super chats um really really excited really excited about it sorry I'm just reading the chats appreciate you Posh I see you in there let's get to some of these Daniel's been a member for two glued on listen I I'm all about the Chris slander and the talking [ __ ] to Chris but he's not here to defend himself save it for Wednesday um no Chris Chris earned a two a a a very well-deserved two days off um I see a couple more comments coming in on why Chris um isn't here but Chris is on a boat he's on a boat [ __ ] in akan somewhere probably what is that probably like a sludge [ __ ] puddle or whatever it is in akan because iraan sucks Ben member for two months appreciate you he said thankful for y'all 20 million is no joke keep doing your thing and it will keep growing Menace for life that's a fact um sky's the limit man sky is the limit and like everything else we're just just trying to figure out the next steps the next growth if you have any ideas shoot me an email Zack mensports dcom um but I think we're doing good the bus is going to be done this summer we have our live shows going this is all stuff we didn't have last year a new website is is dropping tomorrow we're making the Right Moves we just got to keep blowing it up and you got to keep blowing it up I can't do it I just sit here and try to create you guys are the ones that blow it up so share the video like the video we appreciate you for five [ __ ] years man oops wrong one uh Ohio Pete thanks for the five he said when and why did you change the name from Menace to Society to menace to sports um I don't remember when it was but originally I was like a scorn dog right like I felt like Society was so [ __ ] up like that something could be said by someone that I knew wasn't true but regardless true or not there was no proof that it happened and somehow my life could be ruined by people that have no [ __ ] idea if it's true or not and that's been my G my the issue I had was not like oh my ex-wife lied didn't do it it's more like the the concept that Brett Bert McMurphy's of the world ESPN they can go after and ruin someone's life when they don't have a [ __ ] clue what happened I mean I know what happened but none of you do and that's okay I understand right things happen behind closed doors it also could have happened and there's just no proof I see all sides of the argument but we're cancelling people and impacting lives without the proper knowledge to do so like no one knows what happened in my life but I got canceled for it and so initially I was going to do Menace Society I was going to tax you know family law how ridiculous it is divorce court and custody and child support which is all a [ __ ] scam an absolute crime eventually we started mostly focusing on college football then all we talked about was college football and current events and I was like Menace Society doesn't really fit because we're I'm not talking about things on The Daily so we switched the name to minister sports that's uh that's how it happened that's how it evolved coach Zack I appreciate you my guy he said Zack my wings got put on the tab Friday so this is me to paying you back love getting to see meet everyone and have our own dgen table can't wait for this next live show hopefully this baby will be here by then well I hope so too praying for a health a healthy birth for mama and baby and uh yeah a lot of people's [ __ ] got put on my tab which I'm gonna which I have no problem doing it was giving back to the Army you didn't have to pay me back for them but I did ask the yogi scrs I was like yo who got all this stuff they're like oh um I I we just put like all those tables on your tab I was like Jesus all of them I told you $800 Bart tab that's what I had and I I had one or two drinks I guess I had a couple more after the show I think I had two before and during the show and then a couple more I didn't even eat and I had an $800 tab but you're good coach Zack I appreciate you coming out T Shaw remember for two months congrats on the show success coach you as well as Chris I know it wasn't your baby but you were a big part of the success oh saying that to Chris that's a fact I'm a huge part of the success Raphael member for two months happy five years just incredible thank you for the entertainment you provide every weekday and thank you for this amazing Community don't thank me I mean I guess I started it but it's really all man it's the Army the AR the men's army is ridiculous and once people come to a live show they want to come back the show's fun but it's the people that are around that really make people love it so I appreciate you guys Sean member for a month I don't think it's that profound for OSU they're players lost in a portal were mostly upper class pushed out by youth thoughts no I agree entirely um I just think it's wild how this is going like that you could lose that many players and right like when I read the number I was like that can't be right and I pulled up the list I was like damn now none none of those players outside of D Hayden were really considered a loss I think it was those were good for both parties right the player wanted to play OSU was like you're not going to play here we could use your scholarship for somebody else that might play here so it was a mutual departure I think it's really good and that's the good side of the transfer portal without a doubt R Mars thanks for the five love the show boys you keep it real always oh you Menace um that's that's what we try to do just keep it a 100 keep it one hundo keep it a buck Zen Juan thanks for the five what a date for the anniversary fun fact May 20th in Chinese means I love you 520 does how about that that's really cool I didn't know that love the show love you all can't wait to see the show go skyrocketing me either Jordan let us see the crib coach or some gold pants ring I don't have any of them on me my apologies if I would have saw this I would have brought some into Studio I got you though at some point I will and I appreciate you Jordan I appreciate all the Michigan fans that listen that aren't just absolute [ __ ] like narrative believing over reacting douchebags Richie appreciate the five been a great five years Philly needs to come go to akan and race Chris in a 40 Chris is a good athlete but that would be that would be ugly blue Wolverine appreciate you being a member for two months congratulations on five years uh I I appreciate it man Weston member for two months fiveyear anniversary let's go I'm excited man I just think about where we'll be in five years that's all I could think about like think about where this show could be in five years considering where it was five years ago today just insane Shane with with the two Andy Joe punked red flag Chris into a day off today Andy Joe really did Punk Chris 18 Rolland thanks for the five what's up coach I'm on a super delay because of goofy meetings had to check in with the gang for the five honey buns episode congrats I appreciate you 18 Roland H Buckeye for the five day is we better Tres and urban built into the game to take hearts and souls and leave it all on the field the team lacks that [ __ ] you know that's what Philly and I just talked about Gorky appreciate the two you guys should make a three-man show ad Philly it would be a banger coach Zack appreciate the five my new unpopular opinion on day he is the football s version of Calipari all about getting dudes to the league and recruiting but has no dog in him I think he does and I think we're gonna see it this year Gorky again for the two salute to Cameron and you Zach you should be proud I am I don't think I've ever been prouder um not only of my son for I don't know it feels really good when your son says you're his hero um that was it's a feeling I can't even describe I can't even put into words but also because he knew he was gonna get pushed back like like he was wrong for feeling that way and he's really turning into an impressive young man really is and I'm I'm so proud of him uh Ros thanks for the two rewatch The 13 Big 10 championship game not sure that we beat FSU yeah maybe not the defense struggled that's for sure James appreciate the 10 happy 5-year anniversary couldn't be happier to be in the Menace Army thanks for all you do Zach and Chris every day your commitment to us is appreciated and doesn't go unnoticed cheers to five more that's what I'm all about the last five years have been incredible and as I reflect on him it just makes me starving for the next five like where can we take this in the next five years that's all I can think about is what's next how do we make it bigger how do we reach more people how do we grow this this community and I think I think we're making the Right Moves I mean live shows are going to be big the bus going on tour and then the website is going to be massive with message boards and the whole thing I mean it's it's gonna be really cool to watch Gorky another two we appreciate appreciate you hope we International people can pay and register I will send an email right now to double check on that Abe thanks for the two thanks for the content happy five years I will uh say this in in in I guess exiting remark on part one of the fiveyear celebration I really I really can't even explain how fortunate I am to have the people I've had in my life Philly is a great example I mean I was hired at Ohio State let's see in 2012 I was 26 years old and a player like Philly really smart really talented right had established himself as a starter he didn't have to buy in to me as his coach right didn't have to he could have been an [ __ ] and been like this [ __ ] younger coach doesn't know [ __ ] now I like to think I was I was I I was decent as a coach I Know This Much the coach I was in 2018 compared to 2012 was night and day I was not near as good a coach in 2012 as I was in 2018 and for guy for someone like Philly to believe and buy in and change the trajectory of the room forever and then other players too countless other players Curtis Grant Joshua Perry Ian got players that I still talk to that I hold in in the highest regard and and who I'm fortunate to even call friends guys like Evan Spencer is another good one there's there's too many of them and then on top of that my family Justine my kids my friends and most importantly all of you because this wouldn't be possible without any of you I appreciate you guys helping us make it grow and how you do that Shameless plug is you share the video to social media share the video to to group chats and as Pat McAfee says be a friend friend I really appreciate you guys the next five years are going to be a [ __ ] movie a movie and I'm really excited about it also special thanks to Chris this show really took off when I hired Chris and he he made it pop man he really he really is uh what's the word he's Irreplaceable like the show could not be the show without Chris Drew so enjoying a couple days off as he should and we'll be I'm excited to get back Wednesday and do a normal show but we'll see you tomorrow GNA bring in a little Eric lter to talk he's one of the best he owns a business with uh Cardell Jones plus two University it's a gym uh here in Columbus one of the best private trainers strength coaches I've ever been around trains my kids uh Philly said a virgin talking about Chris um so that'll be tomorrow we'll talk to Lor about the trussle era kind of urban coming in some of the things that happen during his time and also talk about training Youth Sports it's going to be a banger great interview I'll see you tomorrow Menace Army Menace out
