Should Manchester United RE-SIGN Angel Gomes!?

so there is probably one name that you keep hearing no matter where you turn at the moment Angel Gomez United Academy graduate homegrown Talent out of contract next year and just completely dictated a game for England so should Manchester United look to bring him back to the club next summer let's take a look so before we get even close to a conclusion on whether or not we should sign Gomez back to the club we actually need to figure out what he is as a player because he is very different to what we had in the academy in the academy he was this small creative midfielder someone that wanted to play in a 10 role high up the pitch and really be responsible for unlocking an opposition defense finding that last little pass providing that little bit of creativity or that little spark in the final third to create chances for his team these days anger Gomez is something very very different you would have seen it for England last night he is now very much a deep midfielder he also played this role for Lil in France he's been playing in this sort of position on a regular basis but also for the England under one side that won the Euros the other summer Gomez has very much developed into a midfielder that is going to hold in a slightly deeper position however the skill set that he brings is actually still very similar to what he has always brought and that is just pure technical quality on the ball Gomez is unbelievably gifted he's got an incredible first touch his tight control his ability to manipulate the ball his body swerves you know the way he drops a shoulder the way he manipulates the opposition is all phenomenal he is a proper diminutive low center of gravity midfielder and you guessed it he is press resistant in the first phase he is capable of dropping into these positions and if the opposition are going to apply pressure Gomez has all the qualities to kind of wriggle out of danger he'll use his upper body to try and keep the ball away and keep the opposition away I should say and then the brilliant footwork to keep moving the ball and what he's also pretty good at doing probably because he's small is actually winning a lot of free kicks a lot of opposition players will get frustrated ated by his small touches so they actually just kind of bundle him over but that gives Gomez a lot of free kicks for his side and it makes him really good in the first phase and I felt that some of this was shown in the game last night against Finland for England you can see Ango Gomez here moving towards the ball in a deeper position the first thing you'll notice is actually just how small he looks compared to a lot of the players around him this is a proper Tiny But tidy midfielder on the ball but you can see the first thing a really good first touch and that's actually the first thing that screams out to me here the fact that he wanted to get get this ball under control you can see he's got a lot of players around him here a lot of footballers want want to go and clear this ball go and play it first time hook it away get it away from danger but that didn't really enter Gomez's mind he wanted to get the ball down he wanted to control it and keep it tight and then what he's going to do is like I said manipulate the opposition you can see the touch with the outside of the right foot to move the ball away you can see the upper body strength using a straight arm to keep the opposition away from the ball and then eventually the opponent's going to get bored and basically just shove him to the ground we've also got another clip of him doing something fairly similar here again he's really deep just outside his own penalty area and you can see him using his upper body once again looking to keep the opposition away from the ball he wants to keep them at the maximum distance possible but if they are able to get close it's not too much of a problem because the way that he turns is so good it's so unique there are very few midfielders I feel in the world that can play in the way that gomez plays and it's because he's so small he's a bit like a a baratti sort of profile small diminutive midfielder that that turns out of trouble effortlessly because physically these bigger players they just can't actually turn as quick as what you can it's it's almost a cheat code his size he uses it to his Advantage so well what I also love about Gomez when he plays in Midfield is that the way that he plays on the half turn you know a lot of small midfielders like to keep things pretty simple a lot of the time they want to avoid physical contact and a lot of the time they opt for sideways passing one or two touch football to keep the ball moving again to keep the opponent away from them Gomez has the ability also though to get on the half turn to attract the attention of an opposition player so he's going to kind of have a a relaxed body language as the ball is moving towards him the opposition feel that they can go Nick the ball and what Gomez is actually going to do is plant his what plant one foot normally his left foot and let the ball kind of roll across his body and that's because he is very much a Forward Thinking player he has certainly developed into a player that can dominate the tempo of a game game we saw it in the stats last night for England they were absolutely ridiculous the amount of passes he attempted he very much controlled the rhythm of the game but he isn't sideways for the sake of it he isn't someone who just wants to play laterally he wants to try and get the ball forward now to do that he's going to use disguise on the ball he's regularly going to shape up one way like he's going to play to the right hand side and then fire a pass into to the left but also just the way he manipulates the ball is really impressive and again this was something that he done to great effect last night what I liked though was the variety of these passes for example here you've got big long switches of play Gomez picking the ball up if with a bit of space in the middle of the park and he's got that ability to flick the pass out to the far side and this is where I think Gomez offers something different to what United have currently if we are talking about Gomez potentially being a competitor for kobby Mayu kobby Mayu doesn't really do this kobby Mayu is someone who moves the ball over short distances He will carry the ball a bit like Gomez does but a lot of the time he is looking for short passes or medium- range passes at the most go loves a long pass and his numbers are actually genuinely really impressive in this area I think he is incredibly underrated with his long passing ability and actually his passing ability in general he would bring something a little bit different it's also though like I said the disguise the the cute bits of play that he does which really impresses me in situations like this he has this habit of shaping up as though he is going to play one way you know he shapes his body up zo he's going to play to the right hand side and then at the last second he's really going to wrap this ball proper fire it into the feet of Jack greish now it looks perhaps on paper like a fairly easy pass but if you actually watch the game it's the weight of pass it's the speed the way he kind of deceives the opposition they believe the ball is going one way he quickly changes it goes the other way and puts really good speed on the pass to make this a proper incisive pass moving through the lines taking out several Finland players at a time into the feet of Jack greish and this was something that he done to be honest all night last night he just kept doing it picking the ball up in these sorts of positions he sh up as though he is going to play one way you know his body movement is very much suggesting right hand side and then at the last second he's going to change it he's going to fire the ball into a pocket of space and this is how I would describe Gomez he's a player who is brilliant at finding other players in the pockets perhaps it's because he used to play in the pockets himself you know he he knows what passes players want to receive whatever it is I'm not sure but he is so good at it he is so good at finding this little reverse ball and nine times out of 10 it's going to catch the opposition off guard like you a situation like this if you're Finland you feel fairly safe you know greish here shouldn't really be getable with a a ball on the floor it shouldn't really be particularly achievable but for Gomez it is because he takes his time on the ball again he opens his body up as though he's going to play One Way really opening up to the towards the right hand side here and then at the last second he catches all the Defenders off guard and slides his ball through here and again he wraps it with real speed into the feet of greish and it's so useful it's such a useful skill set to have for breaking down down a low block it's something again which I think United currently lack Gomez brings it here again scanning he's seen deam rice early he knows where rice is but then what he's going to do after that is actually take a couple of touches slow it down a little bit and that draws the Finland players over this way towards the leftand side and then once again Gomez is just going to play that little reverse ball it's really cute but it's just something that United lack that ability to be a rhythm Setter with passing kobby B is a good passer but he prefers to carry the ball first ugar is is a good passer but he's fairly safe and he also does quite like a carry Bruno Fernandez is quite direct with his passing casemiro is the same Erikson is similar Toby Kier is very safe Gomez is the one midfielder if he was to come into the club that would bring high volume but proper Rhythm setting passing you know rhythmic passing on the ball and I think United could really do with that but it's also the subtle details in his game particularly against a low block now this side of game you know against deep defenses almost certainly comes from his time playing as a higher midfielder a creative midfielder this is a real subtle manipulation that people won't really notice it doesn't achieve that much I guess in the grand scheme of things but when you do this regularly in a football match it's surprising how much yards this Gams you on a football pitch so we've got Gomez here and you can see initially it's fairly safe he's just taking a safe touch in the middle of the park and you can see there's a few Finland players about ready to engage should he try something a bit more risky now what he does initially is he pulls his right foot back as though he is about to play a pass perhaps into somewhere like this you know the body shape he's got it looks like he's going that way with the pass but he doesn't do that however simply that bit of movement it manipulates this Defender this Defender is is drawn in by it he becomes slightly flat footed because of it then at the last second angle gome is going to change direction drop of the shoulder the hips drop the knees drop he's moving towards the right hand side diminutive midfielder not many players can change uh at this speed not this sort of change of Direction at this pace Gomez is unique in this but you can see what it does is it gets that opposition Defender really flat footed really flat-footed because of that almost fake pass that he played that stutter he done he's almost jittery at times on the ball it appears it's really almost hectic it seems but it's actually all controlled because he's doing it on purpose he's getting this Defender flat footed so that when he changes Direction the opposition simply can't even get close to him and it makes life really easy for Gomez then Gomez is going to move the ball a little bit further forward now again he is going to play a fake pass if you like he shapes up as though he is going to play the ball if I just showed you this image you would assume he is now passing and the opposition assume the same so of course what they do when you think the opposition are about to play a pass you you get compact you you close off spaces and again it has that effect on the Finland Defenders you can see they quickly all become extremely flat footed this means that when Gomez wants to play a ball out wide it's really easy because he has drawn the Finland players Central the ball wide to B Saka on the right hand side is incredibly easy now Saka is actually behind me but all of Gomez's kind of intricate manipulative work is what has got England into this position it's really good from Gomez and again it's something that United certainly lack it's also something that England lack as well so is Gomez that profile that we need in Midfield genuinely I think yes technically I think he is almost he's a lot of what we want on the ball press resistance in the first phase a high volume passer someone who can set the rhythm of a game and can progress the play can manipulate against a low block he can play long balls he can switch it it's all great defensively I think he put in a pretty good shift yesterday for England he done a decent bit of defensive work trying to stop Transitions and joining in the Press however physically there is certainly a problem there he is Tiny I think if he was to be in a team with Leandra Martinez we'd probably have a problem down this side of the pitch however if you were to sign bigger players around him which we've spoken about you know we need to do that with kobby m anyway sign a big physical left back or a left Center back or a central midfielder if you were to do that and put Gomez into this team I actually think it works really really nicely now if we were talking about a player here which was going to cost I don't know 3040 million pound I would probably say steer away from it let's see if we can find someone else but on a free transfer next summer someone who has played for the club came through the academy is a homegrown talent and actually takes a lot of the boxes of what we need I think Gomez could potentially be a really nice signing for United this time next year now I'm not going to fully recommend him yet I need to watch him more but I would say keep an eye on this one because I really like the idea of it so go watch Gomez every opportunity you get this season watch him for liil hopefully watch him for England again and I tell you what I think there's a really nice player in there who has developed really well he's got character making that move away from England to a foreign League just to try and get minutes to Aid his development that says a lot about his character to then finally break through for England it says a lot and I think it's a really nice player so keep watching him I'm certainly going to keep doing that in terms of today though we are
