At Home with Jason Day | Swing lessons and tour

hey guys this is Jason day this is my barn facility that I use during the summer and the winter time uh to practice golf so come on in so we're inside uh standing on my virtual green here and we're moving across to the gym and this is something that I use pretty much every day uh now granted I don't work out as hard as I used to just because I've had some injuries in the past and now my training is definitely a lot different um but you know this is kind of where I do all my stretching before I go out to the golf course and then kind of moving along here we're standing on Virtual green which is uh something that I utilize actually quite a lot in the winter time all I have to do is just come over and press the button and you'll see the slope change right now this is currently on 100% intensity on the slope to left or right so this side is higher I'm going to that middle uh location there so if I'm putting you'll see it break significantly to the to the right there so you'll start to see this break off quite significant to the other other side if you're struggling with right to left is and you're missing him low there's something that you can kind of come in here and just hit some pots and especially when it's raining or if the wind here in Ohio gets cold you can come in here and just work on your putting while um you know staying sharp so as I walk across the virtual green I have a full swing simulator this is if I want to do Sim work uh but most of the time I come in here and watch TV and hit balls into it okay so as I come across to the trophy cabinet it's kind of unique because um obviously we've got um some really important ones you got the the Bay Hill win this is my first win um on the nation one which is a corn fairy tour now we have the PGA um The Players down the end there uh we got a couple of match plays this is is pretty unique uh the the mark McCormick award which uh is an award that goes to the individual that holds number one in the world for the longest for that year um and then you know I've got some pretty unique things like the Farmers Insurance this opened and then this one was my first win which was the baron Nelson um this is probably the most important thing and the trophy cabinet is the this 3-wood this is the club that got me into golf uh this is uh the club that my dad found at the Rubbish Tip and brought it home to me when I was 3 years old so we're in the front yard of my house and typically once I'm done playing golf the family is usually somewhere around here um this is somewhere where we have you know a lot of the family time is right here we play soccer along here we do any activities we have right here but yeah it's nice to be able to come back after like a hard day work or of of practice or you know I finished the tournament I'm coming in on Sunday and and the family's out here playing and it's just easy for me to get out of the car and where everything's here you know the kids are out on on the green over here practicing or over that green you know you can kind of take a full view of everyone where everyone is I got five kids very busy so um it's nice to be able to have a yard where it's like the shade it's green it's nice and flat it's it's manicured really nice and you know I can I can watch all the kids [Music] oh nearly jammed it I wanted to have three greens we got five bunkers so we got different types of bunkers to simulate different type of major championships typically we got some Like uspga Us open kind of style uh bunkers on on the right here we got an Augusta bunker fi right here um and then we have a British Open bunker at the back I wanted to create different shots whether I was hitting here down to se green or hitting down near SE green hitting back up to the a green or back this way you can see different types of angles and shots whatever you want to work on especially with uh the different types of Hills that you have one of my favorite tournaments is the Masters and this is uh very much an inspiration on those bunkers what I wanted was different levels o of bunkers so this is obviously very low and then it raises up into kind of more of a flatter spot when I'm down here I can see these no problem when I walk up to here I can see these if I want to have the blind shots and I can go back down into the bottom part of the bunker you know from here this is the most used bunker I just kind of get in there and I've got so many pins that I can hit [Music] it one thing that I'm working on right now is making sure that I release the club Head Down and Under the ball a lot more so it's almost like essentially what you want to do is get enough weight forward where you can kind of feel this leg start to like tense up and for me all I really try and do is when I'm back here I always exaggerate it but I feel like I'm I'm throwing the club and then from there just nice acceleration up through the through the ball or The Hitting [Music] Zone there you go essentially what I'm always trying to work on be more aggressive through here uh get it coming out softer so that way I can get to tight pins like there or you know if I want to hit it longer I just don't open the face as much we're standing on uh green this is more of a wedge green we have this big kind of Ridge that runs through it from the lower to the to the upper level an Australian type bunker there um but also a British Open bunker as well they laid this revetted Edge to simulate a British Open bunker in Ohio which is funny enough you don't get a lot of that in Ohio but this sand um is is beach sand dune sand it Sim imates what you get over at the Open Championship a very fine sand that is really easy to get your wedge through the through the sand yeah this is a pretty difficult shot actually um I'm looking at it and this like obviously the edge is like really close just keep the speed up and hit it as hard as you can open that face up make sure that you get a little bit left I mean that is a very very highedge looking it's almost as tall as me right now so just like that yeah easy as we come on to the green these are these are bent greens up in Ohio we we can't have too many different types of of you know grasses up here looking at this part right now it's a left to right part an easy way to tell if it was raining where would the water kind of run off so right now I know that the low points over here high points over there speed is the most important thing in in putting like you got the speed the Putt and being able to start it online they're the three most important but speeds are most important I'm kind of reading I'm trying to tell myself a story as I'm coming into the ball I kind of track my eyes along the line and then putt we're down in the lower part and we didn't really move a lot of dirt uh because I actually liked how this kind of came down here and I could see two greens in between we obviously so on bent grass here in Ohio there's different ways of playing a flop shot you got the really high flop shot like super high land really really soft I feel like that's the most inaccurate for most people you got the something that's in between where it's like a hybrid version of of that flop shot where it's a little bit lower but there's a lot more accuracy and then you got the kind of flop shot that you can learn for beginners where it doesn't come out as high practically have the same chipping motion as your normal chip with a square face but like you just got to open it up so for me right now we're going to play the intermediate um I just feel like you don't really need to have the super high flop shot here today just because it is a little bit softer conditions right now something that's easy we're just going to 45 it we're going to make sure we have a little bit more weight not as much in the bunker as what we had before but a little bit weight forward we're going to take a couple of practice Wings making sure that we're trying to visualize the shot that we have for the most part you going to want to try and hit it a little bit harder than what you think so from there you're just kind of taking a hybrid half between a like a full full swing and a and a Chip Shot take your practice wings and then we'll we'll hit a shot in so 45 little bit of weight forward and then we're going to hit it and it's going to spin I wish you got that shot on camera cuz that was really nice you got it here but the the balls really nice so this is a uh Kentucky Blue Grass this is kind of typical grass that you see up in like the Midwest the further south you go obviously you get the Bermuda rough and that I think personally is the most difficult rough to hit out doesn't have to be long it can be inch and a half 2 in and B Ru is so hard um but this stuff is more predictable this one kind of similar to our flop shot I'm not going to really play uh it too difficult like it's sitting on top the grass so you kind of have to brush the grass or the level of the grass you either kind for me personally I feel like I'm hitting up on the this is where like I don't really recommend a lot of people hitting up on it but um this is one thing that you can actually do in the rough because it's like if I put my club Behind the ball it's so much lower than where the ball is that I'm I'm going to have to feel like I hit up on it just to make sure that it hit Center face so I'm going to hit up on it and then in the thicker grass what you have to do is like you have to know that once there's a little bit more Gras that is behind the ball right here once you identify that hey that's that's going to get in between the face right the ball and the club club face that's going to get in between here as I hit so it's going to act like a sponge almost where it's it's going to come out soft really soft so if I'm playing mut grass typically I go I always go it's a double shot so when I know that it's going to be thick and it's going to come out soft I look at where I'm trying to land it and add the same amount of distance where I'm trying to land it on top of the shot and try and land it there so if I'm trying to land at 10 yards I'll try and land at 20 yards and typically most of the time it'll come out 10 yards and run but for this one I know that there is a little bit of thickness to it technique doesn't really change too much cuz you know it's going to come out soft and you're just going to hit it a little bit harder just like that
