I'm currently in the Pharaoh Islands a group of 18 Islands very beautiful very rugged but with some harsh realities and I'm here to investigate a number of different stories but one of the most prominent here is the salmon farming and today I've met up with Neptunes Pirates as they investigate a little bit [Music] further we have just come out of the backa Frost fish farm you literally walk on in and you're confronted by these bins which contain up to one ton of dead salmon and this is dead salmon that is filled with diseases it's covered in light it's died and sunk to the bottom of these awful Nets and Backa Frost is meant to be one of the most sustainable most ethical salmon Farms but what I just saw just then was not sustainable and certainly not ethical the fish will have died because of disease injuries sea lice all kinds of things uh some of them are half eaten you can see that they're in a terrible State and yet the fish that people eat will come out from amongst all of that all of this is happening in an open field or in the sea so dead fish all of the fish excretor everything like that just goes out into the wider environment and of course when you've got 150,000 fish in one Farm they'll poop a lot and all of that ends up um having an effect on the environment around it because it nutrify the water and takes off oxygen on to the water we've just moved bit further down the road and I can see the active backa Frost salmon farm here now I'm with the team from Neptunes Pirates they're going to take through the water to try and get some footage of what's going on actually in the active salmon farm backa Frost says that they're meant to be one of the better ones they're meant to be green more sustainable this is the salmon that you eat on your dinner plates the salmon that you buy from the supermarkets that is sold in restaurant that is sold in pet food or from a company which in the UK is rspca assured openet salmon farming can never be sustainable it can never be green it is not good for us or our planet and Backa Frost whilst it has an arm here in the pharoh is also a company well established in the UK and it's a company which is rspca assured to me that's absolutely disgraceful and we need to rethink think that Assurance scheme now because this is not okay we should not be eating this type of food that is farmed in this way rspca time to scrap the scheme [Music]
