as a dedicated follower of hockey and particularly of Steven Pete's inspiring journey I am deeply saddened by the news of his untimely demise he was more than just one of a players to many fans he was a symbol of resilience grit and determination who fought not only on the ice but also often uh former NHL hockey player Steven P has doed died following a tragic accident he was 44 uh on Thursday September 12th the anel Alumni Association announced the passing of a former Washington Capitals forward through a Facebook post by 57 with great sadness you we had the NHL lni Association confirmed the passing of Steven Pete who succumbed to injuries sustained in a devastating accident about 2 weeks back uh tragically in 1744 even 40 years and then when he read this and he was just 44 years old and then became you know small ways and gathered and then became uh a give together as 1998 saw Steven getting picked up by the anah Ducks as their 32nd overall pick later in 2000 he was traded to the capitals and played in 130 regular season 745 in general games for them contributing 10 points to their scoreboard subsequently his professional career came to an end in the AHL after the 20067 season um although specifics about the accident weren't shared the post made it clear that Pete had chosen to be an organ donor and uh following the unfortunate incident I now was Shar that Steven will be making a significant difference by donating his organs um potentially saving many lives um our thoughts are with Steven's family uh friends and past colleagues um as they navigate uh through this challenging period uh through a post on their official Twitter account the Washington Cals have expressed their sympathy towards the family and friends of the late Pete as a devoted admirer I want to express my deepest sympathies to the family and Companions of Steven Pete a beloved former player of our esteemed Washington Capitals team for Four Seasons from 2001 to 05 he graced our ice in the National Hockey League playing an incredible 130 games with us during this challenging moment my thoughts are with his cherished loved ones uh fans of hockey expressed their tribute towards Pete upon hearing the unfortunate news and they reacted to the social media messages about him uh one fan expressed their Sorrow by saying may he rest in peace he was a favorite on the capitals his battle with PJ stock is among the greatest fights uh I've seen well another paid tribute by saying he was as strong as steel rest in peace the ne wrote too many hockey guys passing this year are they building a professional hockey league in heaven this needs to stop abound at 15 Pete got drafted into the Western Hockey League of Canada where he had a thriving hockey career that lasted until his retirement uh from skating at the age of 26 in 2006 um uh following his retirement Pete struggled with homelessness depression and various health problems that he attributed to concussions suffered during his Sports career uh during a 2016 interview with the New York Times Pete expressed worry about an untimely demise resulting from injury sustained to his head while playing hockey he also voiced criticism towards the impact the sport had on his personal life uh Pete uh shared with the uh outlet that hockey has been both a wonderful and challenging part of his life he enjoyed it during his uh his uh playing days but lately he wonders what good it's doing um and his uh his uh fellow enforcers are now just statistics while the NHL seems to be in denial about the role they played um and uh despite giving up much as person well-being future and quality of life for his teammates the league acts as if the J he did doesn't exist or ever mattered um and in 2019 Pete spoke again of his struggles postretirement in an interview with the National Post um at this and after the performance ends it's hidden a difficult scene at that moment no one is applauding for me you understand they aren aware of the hardships I face he shared this with the meteor at the time this
