Metal detecting the New years day massacre site-1888 Hardy Kentucky-Hatfield McCoy feud murders

[Music] on New Year's Day 1888 the Hatfields formed a posy to go to the McCoy home place to burn down the McCoy cabin while the family was inside it is said that devil ants Hatfield was not present for the attack that fateful evening the Hatfield approached Randol McCoy's cabin setting in Blaze and commence committing further violent acts killing two of Randall and Sarah's grown children a son named Calvin and a daughter named alifair Sarah McCoy Randall's wife was bludgeoned and left for dead she survived the incident but she was never the same mentally or physically The McCoys left for pel Kentucky afterward and never returned [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] perfect [Music] well good morning everybody it's early it's about 7:20 and figured I'd get up and get me a little fire going I had a couple dur Flames left from last night so I just threw one on there and sparked it I can see the slightest little hint of sunshine on the top of that mountain up there on the peak uh it's about 62° by the way not really the warmest morning but it'll do it'll do especially if you got a campfire and I just set my coffee rather than go down to the truck and you know get the heater get the you know the propane and the little stove I just set it I just set my coffee right there that ought to work just as well I would imagine it's probably getting pretty warm right about now it should work didn't get too hot there moving back a little bit oh yeah I can feel a little bit of heat okay a whole lot right there good enough ouch spilled a little bit look at that look how hot well I guess I'll probably rip all this stuff down pretty soon like I said Danny will be here at about 11: and I figure since it's you know it's early I've got plenty time I'll go ahead here pretty in a little while get woke up first I've only been up about 5 minutes uh get woke up and tear all the camp ground Camp stuff down and have everything ready by 11 and uh you know that way I won't be tearing it down in the middle of the day in the was this like 95 today 97 something like that wow check out the sunrise over Randall that is cool I was just sitting there got my little fire going sipping on some coffee and just happen to look up and you can barely see the sun just starting to peek over the mountain up there and you can see a line where the where the light that is just wild the rayss I guess rays of sunlight whatever you can just see it slice right down through there that is insanely beautiful a little bit of sun over here Randall lived here they didn't have no air conditioning you know I guess if Randall kids can do it I probably can too I suppose but this is going to be a great day he I am sure of that much that much I'm sure of just what little tiny bit you know one little spot and came up with charred wood fragment from Randall's house I saved him I know it's just a little tiny piece of burnt wood I I know that but yeah to to to us to us that's price you know it's like I said it's literally a piece of Randall McCoy's house and even if we don't get a whole lot of stuff this is going to be fun I love the big tall trees and we don't have a whole lot of Pines here in southern West Virginia we don't really you know we've got a lot of old growth Oak and Hickory and you know all kinds of stuff like that out west has a lot of Pines you know deciduous and pine forests stuff like that but we don't really have a whole lot of them here and if you'll notice there's a row of Pines going up here a row of Pines going up here and if you look at this on Google Earth and there's a little clock up top if you're looking at Google Earth you can go back in time and look at old satellite images you can see the row of pine trees in the winter time that they were deliberately planted there's a row up this way and a row up this way no one has slept in this spot since Randall and his family left that night on New Year's in 1888 that settled everything right there that put it all to bed you know right there on the spot there's only one place you can camp you have to put it you have to put it where the house was wow just take a look at that I came over here a minute ago was just taking some pictures you know you know how is you do stuff like this you got to have pictures right and just the view I mean look at that how beautiful that is how cool that is you know the tent set up right where the house was that is really cool Randall McCoy's old Home Place Randall's Trail that's the one I was up on earlier yesterday check this out I noticed a few things when I was taking pictures look here now this is at Randall's property now whole whole bunch of stuff there's like 10 pages worth of text there itty bitty stuff look at that this is inch or so from the from it little teeny tiny text a water pump look that little Pitchfork remnants of a plow H pretty very cool looking imagine you know using that thing all day on this hill uhhuh but I thought I would you know while we're here kind of show you guys around a little bit more I know I've shown you some of this stuff before in other videos but you know I figured I'd since we are here this is an 800 pound lifesized wood carving Randall McCoy carved by Trappers wood carvings Travis Williams here's his phone number if anybody wants something you know hey want something carved there you go there's a dude that does it and here's some information look at that and January 1st 1888 and this is a Williamson Daily News article about poly Hollow distillery that's them right there and they use water from the well to make their shine with and it's actually randle's you know randle's moonshine yall want some it's called poly Hollow there you go look them up but here's the well this is Randall's well right here now Bob had this added here the stone on top but the well is original and you can see it right [Music] here luckily I have long arms that's pretty though isn't it look at that how that's built this is basically how you would have built things you know in the 18 1800s mid to late 1800s well Danny made it and we're right on time too 11:00 I just saw him coming back up pulling off over there I went over and grabbed a handful of stuff and he's going to grab the rest of his stuff pretty humbling I'll tell you that yeah it is a little bit humbling isn't it know the history of all wow now everybody y'all you guys remember Danny he's been on the channel several times and he's got his own channel and now uh kind of bring you up to speed a little bit all right all right right over here is this kind of a area right here is where Randall's cabin sat at that's where it was burnt now the diggers you you know you see the little sign they put up there from TV show right uh they came down and I think they found 10 or 15 bullets mostly right over here and right over here sorry right over here presumably you know Hatfield bullets firing this way going into that bank and McCoy bullets firing back this way going into this one so you know presumably but all of this was that's Randall's backyard that is Randall McCoy's backyard right there wow that's unreal yeah I don't know the thing is I mean if it's midnight it's like dark anyway you know there there wasn't many pole lights in 1888 so the the the kid in the store The Kid come out the back so it would been back this way somewhere is that correct yeah somewhere somewhere wow this is this is something thank you so much for of course man of course come and we hope to find some stuff today for for the family yeah and yeah whatever we find out we'll give to Bob uh the owner he owns the land we get through digging here I would like to go over it and look at it and tell everybody what we got and then oh yeah we give it to you and well we we'll give anything we find we'll give to him he's got a little see that garage his garage right there uhhuh the upstairs he's got kind of like a little Museum upstairs there okay uh he's got you know different artifacts and Neil over here if you ever get back over this way make sure you stop there at that big brown house at Cedar house and talk to Neil and he knows all kinds of history and he'll stand out there and you know talk with you certainly will he certainly will good dude so what I'm going to do is if it's okay you know how we put the blue flags out and all that good stuff yeah I'm going to do that first find some good hits and just just tag it and then we'll go along or are you going to detect to I brought my little one but you know okay and you can go along detect or whatever and I'm going to go along and hit some places that we're not going to dig this place full the holes I don't want to do that right well I've already talked to him about that I've already talked to Bob about that and he says that he doesn't mind uh all he asks is you know put the dirt back and he's got some grass seed and straw right there to just you know reced the little holes Reed the little holes real quick I've got one that I want to show you let me B you a second now this one right here uhoh got a hole here yes I do remember I told you uh all I checked was just waving it on the way up here I brought it up when I brought the weat up weed eater weat metal detector same difference just kind of waving it around and I got a hit right here now according to my detector this this should be it's iron it says iron approximately 2 ft by 3 ft you know uh I think about 3 ft this way and about 2T this way there was a flag here right from the diggers right now I don't know if they might have flagged something and knocked it over but there's nothing it did whatever it was didn't get dug out now I dug down and if you look right there you can see a layer of Ash right here right let me get little ashy layer right there yeah that's from the house wow now I asked about this I asked Bob he came out yesterday and I asked him about it if the land The Contours had been changed have you bulldozed or back ho you know that sort of thing yes so that would explain why that's deep right that would explain why that's deep it could be in it could be this metal it could be pipe be gumb Barrel it could be it could be anything it could be a post could be I know my imagination been running wild all night long I'll go over it with mine and see that's what I would want you that's why I stopped you know I wanted you to run over it with your good one and just see what you think go do it I'm set up Danny's already running I found [Laughter] something said it's uh a little bit cheaper and it picks up everything you know whereas his can discern stuff because has what's called Ground balancing and mine doesn't so now we know goty to save this grass CLA so he left us out a big thing of grass seed and some straw we'll just patch fill in anything that we dig says it's about 6 7 in deep and you guys can see this is fresh ground going through the grass through the roots you see the roots right down in the hole Jimmy hofa me H mil aart over here on this other side got a root right Yonder this is why you want a guy like Danny here not me supposed to keep my gloves On's say it in there yeah right on it don't know what it is but here it comes oh my God shotgun shell I thought it was a coin I saw the flat that's good yes it is oh it's a we got more up through here you know what that is that is an actual bullet from might have January 1st in 1888 could have went through one of them too you never know could be could be wow that is mushroom that is that's another that's another civil war erir type round I figure wow it's bigger than them other ones though yeah it is and look at the mushroom on how big that is so wonder who would have been over here and who would have been over there do you have any idea well in theory uh this would have been Hatfield bullets firing this way theoretically well that makes sense look lot like in bullets we found up y didn't it yeah kind of theoretically they would be either coming in from that way or coming down this way if they were coming down this way they'd be firing that way we' put Bullets Over on that Hillside wow no well there's a lot of stuff here up and down through here but I'm not I'm not digging it cuz I know it's right right that's the difference between your machine and my machine pop tabs it's got pop tabs uh right mine sounds the same for everything it did good like you said when we went up there on the mountain up there where there was nothing up there but those bullets right that would explain why you know why it found that mini ball and junk you know there's nothing else there it's the only signal you know where yours can discern discern from you know lead or something like that and you know an old piece of 10 well actually this here this one does six frequencies at the same time see each like a penny or a bullet it's all in a certain frequency range and if you just got a analog or a one frequency machine that's all it picks up that in there has six and it does it all simultaneously at the same time mhm so it will separate out all that jump yeah that's doing a great job yes it is better really actually better than the one I had before it's doing a real good job get over here on the Shady Side so I'm not blocking the light well he's working got one there yeah seem like I saw something come out a second ago but I could have been wrong yeah huh where'd it go I know that is wild a it there something still in there too yeah I hear that one both cameras when were they were here they were here what was the last8 so it couldn't been from well it would have been after the house burned yeah but presumably it was still been family property magnet right yeah here you got all kind of little washers and stuff on here I don't know where that come from probably out of my tool house probably now tell us a little bit about this this this whale here this this is this is Randall McCoy's old whale uh Bob added the stone around it to make it pretty and the wood but from there down it is Randall McCoy's old well we're going to try to bring something up out of there right I'm pretty sure way you're the you're the way you're going I'm pretty sure you'll pull a gun out there that says cap on it I no we tried that up there at Jack way on that didn't work out we found some Rust it was historic rust we like have never got the magnet in the well yeah I remember yeah yeah use a pipe y'all need to go back and watch it y'all ain't seen it yet you talking about Ingenuity yeah they have done some Ingenuity on that we're using four fours and 4in pipe and all kind of stuff yeah we got her down there though didn't we y okay y'all ready now we got 50 ft of rope not really sure how well how deep the well is but it's hand dug so they're usually not that deep and you can see the Creeks right over there so the water table shouldn't be real deep okay we'll find out exactly how deep it is today no more than 100 ft so we got this 50 and I got another it's hand dug I couldn't really see them going that deep really you never know okay here we go magnet is in the water guys it's on the bottom is it really yep it's a shallow well then it's very shallow going to dance it around in a little bit see what you find see if it'll it's on the bottom could be muddy too A lot of times they'll fill in you know the sil filter through dancing around there I might hook on to something feel nothing yet or are you picking the magnet all the way up I'm just picking it up off the floor just a little bit trying to dance it around there in different places all right I don't know I don't feel like I got anything heavy on there I'll drop it down on the edge next time here I'm going pull it up no rust all right let's go down on the edge I was going to say it looked like it went down on your side but not on this side so much it ain't very deep it ain't like that well for Jacks that that Jack that's a drilled well was right yeah it's a hand dug you imagine digging that out wow see them Stone all around that yeah I do it act like it's pretty clean said if somebody was in it before not in it but had a magnet and they hooked on something could pull it up that right something oh my God there's something uh-oh what is that metal huh it's a that's heavy yet though you know what on other side shouldn't have F in cuz it's Stone all the way down so shouldn't be no mud in it should it you can see where the re the water level goes up and down when it rains it's pretty wild you see like the clean spot on the Rocks the first I don't know 2 ft down there I'm sorry sorry guys got my camera out of whack yeah we'll do it a few more times there's anything there you should be able to clap onto it pretty easy you know you would think you know his thing but it's it's strong it's like I pulled out a I did pull out a microwave one day on the river a microwave yeah was it a historic microwave well it was erson yeah I think that counts that's probably Dev Lance's microwave hey people do pretty good with this you know magn yeah times this is an ideal place to try it even if we don't get anything we don't want to give up we can say we've magnet fished Randall McCoy's well can't we yes we don't want to give up just a yet oh I felt something the top too yeah top of the ground yeah well you can see the creek right over there you know so I guess that the water table is up high here yeah well explain the ditches too you want do a little bit all right we did the whale and only thing we well you goe you go ahead and talk about the whale and what we got out there oh yeah the only thing we found was a modern lawn decoration in the whale that was the only thing that came out something that fell off up here I'm sure yeah that was the only thing that came out of the whale but we did find some really interesting stuff over here where the uh where the diggers who cleared that off by the way is that you guys or them uh as far as cutting yeah uh tourism does that P count tourism okay okay we have that done myself had that uh cut so people can see where the bullets were and what have you based on did you find anything over here I mean they kept getting hit found one bullet over here but there's some stuff down about 3 and 1/2 ft but over in here yeah area there's a hot spot well the hot spot it's showing that's iron and it's about 3 37 in down on my machine I got a most modern machine they are just bought it okay and I like this machine i' I've not used it this is the first day I've used it so you're going after it or not it's deep it's Deep Over 3T deep not today we may do it again another day it's really getting hot and I have to bring some real big stuff to do that if you want to do it we'll do it though I don't care we'll do it that's fine yeah we got some stuff for you though yes we found get over in the shade and normally does this which we know this is a piece of probably a piece of siden or something I dug that up probably modern that is I figure we got her there is better bring it all out one time we just bring it all out there went one of the nails who uhhuh nice look at that look at the mushroom on that thing yep now this is a shotgun now I I know that stamp that's 1800s I know that stamp but I found them before okay where'd you find that at on the hill on the hill right there okay and this here also I found on the hill that is from one of these cartridges right here a type of cartridge as you can see that's how it be put together right and this has been fired cuz you can see mhm and I would figure this is from the house this is right from the house there do they have that type of nails back in that time I'm not sure is that a square nail I I don't think it is that's what we were kind of thinking I don't no this might be a square nail but I don't know I don't know I have no idea on that but yeah I don't want to you know people to think we're telling them we are going through the period though I mean right there another one whoa that's a that had some heat that had some heat on yes it did yes it did are you ready for a piece of money uh yes I am this is a 1891 V nickel 1891 so that will be after the right 1888 was when it happened right is that correct right right nice some stuff yeah it is this is I would figure this is from that period and that all them bullets there yeah come off out here right direct line of fire look at here I believe this is one side of the other because these are different types of bullets see here's all these ring rings these are different types of bullets actually that's huge right there that's big yeah that's hit something hard ain't it yeah and so has this so is that one wow so it's worth your time yeah definely makes a good video and here's you some some stuff for your artifacts for your Museum thank you thank you done a great job and U
