Francisco 49ers Christian mcaffrey back at practice Trent Williams gets the contract that he's been waiting on he's back in the build all things are pointing up for San Francisco they cannot afford to have a Super Bowl hangover here it is super bowl or bust for the 49ers I think you would agree with that right it will be for a while like the 49ers have their core together like contract wise they got all of these guys under contract for the next couple years so even if they don't have any assets even if they're you know missing draft picks because the guys are supposed to be coming of age that were Tre Lance draft picks like even with all of that they have their core replacing those guys when they get old will be tough but right now they they have it in the short term so if they fall short they'll have a couple more opportunities but here's the interesting thing just today just on Tuesday uh as we're recording this there's a report from Grant con who covers the 49ers for Sports Illustrated that 49ers brass is a little bit hesitant on Kyle Shanahan that this might might be that the that these high expectations might be a little bit more drastic than you think and and and I kind of get it if you have that roster the way that it is mcaffrey Debo now you got auk in the building Trent Williams is back now you've got all that you've got that money spent and you're still falling short and you think it's Kyle Shanahan's fault isn't there kind of a little bit of urgency to get somebody in who maybe can win the Super Bowl with these guys yeah I think you have to with Brock P's contract coming up that's obviously going to change things if he's getting paid the type of money that we've seen thrown around at the quarterback position this offseason that could I mean the the reason the Brandon iuk thing dragged out so long is because they're worried about paying him and Debo Samuel knowing that Brock pie is on the way and knowing that Trent Williams wants new money all of that the money they gave CMC Fred Warner's getting paid big bucks I mean I think that's the reason there was hesitation there so if they're like hey we're to a point now with all the money we've spent where we might have to lose good players well that does create urgency in you can't get it done with this roster which might be the best roster in the NFL then who can I got to tell you Luke I think that would be an absolute disaster though for San Francisco I I insan but like I don't know Jed York is there he does crazy stuff that's true I saw somewhere where I I forget what it was looking at but they were going through like the who could Dethrone Patrick Mahomes and it's like Jordan love uh CJ strad Kyle Shanahan like Shanahan was put in the list with all the quarterbacks and like to me that's smart that makes sense but I think for them to that's an interesting thing whe whether Shanahan should be on the hot seat I think he absolutely should not but I understand at some point you can't change all the players and if you want to change something the coach is usually first on that list but now with Trent Williams back and CMC back the question is is Trent Williams going to be ready to play we're going to hear from our guys at locked on 49ers Brian peacock and Eric Crocker about that don't the idea of going in the season without Trent Williams but to be honest COC like an offensive tackle can he go out there and play 70 snaps this week I think it's harder for I think it's harder for Trent Williams to come back than it has been for auk this year or Bosa last year because wide receivers and defensive ends can rotate in and out you don't rotate offensive tackles Trent Williams is gonna walk in without any Camp any preseason be like cool I'm just going to play all game Monday Night Football like nothing I mean he's a he's a special t but man that's asking a lot for an offensive line we we might see the first ever left tackle rotation in NFL history on Monday night look Brian peacock is one of my favorite voices on this network but I am not concerned whatsoever I mean Trent Williams is one of the best left tackles ever probably and it's just preseason games where was Trent Williams going to play in the preseason anyway probably not no there's like you want them to practice and and Camp parts of that and you want like the physical ramp up you want to get hit like you don't want the first time you get hit in an in in an NFL season to be a live game like you would rather that come from a teammate that doesn't want to injure you but Trent Williams is a veteran enough he he'll he'll manage just fine right that's my general point of you are right about that Luke and that's why I like podcasting With You Luke I you know got to have a little bit of brains added to the show every now and then that's why you're here uh but at the end of the day that's true you do need that ramp up but if there's anybody who doesn't need that ramp up it's Trent Williams I think he's going to be perfectly fine and actually uh our Matt Williamson from peacock and Williamson talked about just that 80% of Trent Williams is probably better than 80% of the left tackles out there anyways you know so and I I do think that's an o line thing across the board is none of them have played a full game yet I mean even if they were involved in the preseason maybe they played a half you know no no one's done that and you can't rotate out of there yeah I you know I think Matt Williamson is on with that I I agree you do want that physical ramp up but at the end of the day I'm just not worried about Trent Williams now they got Brandon auk back at practice Christian mcaffrey back at practice Trent Williams back at practice Luke do you think that the San Francisco 49ers are going back to the Super Bowl this year isn't it so indicative of who the 49ers are that this is how we talk about them that they're like well okay they have they have iuk now they have mcaffrey now but the second you lose one God forbid two of those pieces then you suddenly go ah well yeah they lost three in a row but they didn't have Debo for that and and like how often do they need that whole thing together so it's always going to be if they can stay healthy and what do they get out of their older players like KD and Trent Williams um but it's really hard I mean look it's it's hard to go to the NFC Championship three years in a row let alone win it and go win the Super Bowl and do the whole thing um so I we'll see how the how the Brock py thing is and also just how much of an experiment these 49ers are to have a QB like py who is better than his draft stock for sure right I don't think anybody is going to talk about him like the way you're about to talk about you Jordan love as you know we're talking tractor trailers right um but like how far you can go with a QB who's a trailer and really the the trucks the tractors of the team are the skills not a lot of trailer quarterbacks that have won the Super Bowl in recent years like you got to have somebody who's going to make plays for you yeah and uh you go back like yeah exactly exactly like it's been that long and what a you know Flash in a bottle flashing a pan mixing all the different analogies together but at the end of the day I guess I'll just I don't think that they're going back to the Super Bowl I think they've been too many times I think some of those pieces are getting older and I think Shanahan will start to feel that heat that you were talking about now as for who will go to gate I think Jordan love is winning MVP this year I think the Packers are getting the number one seed in the NFC I think the Packers are the team that's going to the Super Bowl and Jordan love just got a brand new contract and it looks like at least in my opinion the Packers are going to be proven right on that deal let's hear from Peter Bowski from locked on Packers and his special guest NFL Insider Diana rosini it it seemed like it was something we're waiting we're waiting we're waiting and all of a sudden it's just done obviously behind the scenes that's not what happened um what can you tell us about how this all came together it's almost like they're still in the 80s the way they send these contract offers back and forth and the red pens and who's reading why and what language and articles of the of the wording but I know in terms of in the trenches this was all about the structure this wasn't about apy they knew they wanted to make him the highest paid quarterback in the NFL both sides really feel like they won in fact on the outside I would argue Green Bay won this slightly more and you're right like the $75 million signing bonus you see that number I think especially as a fan and you go oh my gosh it's I mean how is this going to hurt our roster how you know do we have the money for this it's it's a good win for Jordan love and it's not going to hurt uh the front office's ability to continue to add pieces and pay the players to keep their core well listen I think Diana's right on there with looking at the contract I think Luke you're a smart guy you you see these contracts and you think about it with the cap going up and everything none of these contracts that we see are ever really as bad as they seem especially a lot of these big quarterback ones you got to do that I again I came out strong I think love wins MVP I think the Packers hit right here whether you agree or disagree as somebody who is in that division what could go wrong for the Packers with this deal yeah I don't think I agree with quite this much yes I can't I can't go here with you Tyler I know Vikings fan going to be down on the Packers a likely story right but hear me out good um so the the whole deal with Jordan love is you know which Jordan love do you get do you get the one that was throwing you know Game ending interceptions in Las Vegas the one that you know blew it against the Giants the one that blew it against San Francisco in the playoffs or do you get the Jordan love that dusted Dallas that dusted Minnesota at the end of the year that that Minnesota game was probably his best game of this season um so which which one do you get right and the Packers have made their bet that the the the good Jordan love is the real Jordan love but I think it's probably okay to say maybe we let's see it a little more before we all truly Buy in but the other thing is for Anytime the Packers would have struggles you would hear this out of out of like the Packers world with Peter and Beyond you would hear well he's he's dealing with a bunch of rookie receivers and they made the mistakes and it's really their fault it's the same group of dudes right so if you think that those were the guys holding back Jordan love unless you just think they all magically became way better versions of themselves hey seconde leap is a thing but you're betting on a bunch of those it's the same group of dudes they're the youngest team in the NFL they that that is is sold as a good thing sometimes where hey you know that means the future is there that means there's a lot of rookie contracts that means you know that their their future is bright because they're young but that also means that they're inexperienced so if we think you know Packers going to the Super Bowl Packers making um making these kinds of runs getting to the playoffs last year and winning a game was huge for them because I think breaking that barrier makes like it just it makes it feel more possible in your head next time you're there but this is still a young inexperienced team and that's going to mean Bozo stuff that's going to mean mistakes and Jordan love himself is not immune to that contract wise they're locked into him for I would say three years in 2027 if things are going bad the Packers could get out of it without that much pain uh but the this is now a three-year experiment of Jordan love plus rookie contract wide receivers last year that won eight games what can we do about it now that you've changed very little I also just to be fair I've given my opinion but I also am going to be fair you look at the offensive line it's a lot of no-name guys some late round picks and they've made it work but if those dudes take a step back at all you know if you just look at all the offensive lines in the NFL on paper you would not think the Packers have a good offensive line you know what I mean yeah it's interesting what they've done there so I really like Jordan Morgan coming out so I I I liked that pick for them but otherwise I mean they've got guys Zack Tom Josh Meers Elton Jenkins they've been around for forever they've been in in the Packers building for forever and they're very established but like left tackle Andre Dillard and I don't think he won the starting job so it's what Rasheed Walker like they're really worried about that so whose Edge rushers are coming off and and going I mean that's two games against Aiden Hutchinson with that they can just stack him over that guy and say all right let's do this right um you know Vikings can do that with like their Jonathan grard everybody's got an ed rusher nowadays that they can go um you know stack over that guy so how are you going to help him how much are you going to have to rely on him holding up for Jordan love to do what he does like I think like the the the Jordan love from Utah state is a long forgotten memory I think he's a much more mechanically sound QB than he used to be it's just that boo jeene and that comes with with some experience and I think Packers fans have to get have to understand that they're going to need to be as patient with this as they were with I mean if you want to compare it to Aaron Rogers you know 20 years ago uh Aaron Rogers took a couple years before he was really like the guy that won that Super Bowl 08 Rogers 09 Rogers um I mean 08 yeah 08 Rogers 09 Rogers wasn't quite that fully put together version of himself and by then you're going to start having to pay all these guys that you're bragging about being so young then it then it ruins the young roster effect and everything like that yeah it's definitely possible now you talked about patience with a quarterback I'll tell you one quarterback in the NFC North that I do not have any patience with and it's Caleb Williams and I'll tell you why after we hear from Lauren Cox campaign we heard so many different Bears players DJ Moore I think Jaylen Johnson others talk about how much Justin Fields was loved in the locker room and how he was their leader and that his teammates Kat as well sticking by him wanting to be their and have him be a part of this team if it were up to them and it led to all the questions about okay how will this locker room handle the leadership transition from Justin fields to Caleb Williams and clearly and I think a lot of the credit belongs to Caleb Williams but clearly Caleb has been able to step in and play this the right way listen when he's supposed to listen talk when he's supposed to talk not go too far out of turn or Rush too fast or try to be too much or try to be anything really more than just himself in this process and that's how you endear yourself and and you know work hard and show show your desire to win and as we expected the team really took to that and is already full Believers in Kaleb Williams man I gotta tell you yesterday having Lauren on as my co-host seeing his video there that beard just looking absolutely fantastic for Lauren going into the season but Caleb Williams also look absolutely uh but so my my whole thought process on Caleb Williams is he was expected to be the number one quarterback in his draft for multiple years in a row everybody was talking about him until he got drafted comes in some people are even saying that the Bears are giving him the best situation that any rookie quarterback has ever gone into with their wide receiver group their offensive line yes I mean ever okay hey we would have to do the research on that but you know you see people talk like that and all I got to say is if all of that is even relatively true and people are hyping up the Bears as a potential playoff team this year well he better be ready right out of the game most rookie quarterbacks get a little bit of a a you know a little bit of a window benefit of the doubt hey they're a rookie quarterback I don't have that with Caleb Williams with the hype surrounding him the situation that he's in how he performed in the preseason Caleb Williams needs to hit the ground running immediately and I have high expectations for him out of the gate and I think just with all the conversation around the Bears Caleb Williams does not have the Run way that most rookie quarterbacks would have the Bears haven't given it to them I mean they they have the way that they've coached him and you can tell in the preseason he's the same guy that he has been in college they haven't they haven't tried to edit his game at all right and there sure that's the decision that you make you know do we we like who he was in college how much do we want to change about that you know we drafted him one overall because of who this guy is but they they've made their choice that the guy you were in college run around hold the ball forever schoolyard that's what we're going to embrace and what our identity as a team is going to be so better work cuz if if he's getting chased down by faster edges then you're going see in the Pack 12 uh well I guess you won't see him in the Pack 12 anymore but if you're going to get chased down by faster edges and it's all going to fall apart and now you have to like actually try to make a dropback quarterback out of Caleb Williams well you just lost his first training camp so you better not want to do that I mean they they have very clearly made the Declaration that this quarterback is out of the box exactly what we want our franchise to be forever we'll see we'll see and that's my point that's my point right there he doesn't get that Runway because they're telling us hey exactly what he is is exactly what we want we don't need to change him we don't need to fix his mechanics we don't need to make him into a pocket passer we just except you so anyways my my whole point here is Bo knck is gonna be the starting quarterback for the Broncos okay and I saw some predictions on NFL Network people have the Broncos in the playoffs and I just think this is absurd now before we get into it do want to hear from our guys Cody Roar and SE Bennington from the locked on Broncos I think the tight end position is going to be a big focal point of of rack I think the running backs as well last year everything was just slanted a little bit towards running backs out of the back field this year and I think specifically in this game we're going to see the beginning of it being receiver running back tight end the wide variety of options at bone nicks's disposal and I think Shawn Payton's going to unleash that a little bit here listen he's gonna unleash it unleash Adam Troutman yeah true that's dude I was literally gonna go there I'm a Dayton guy Adam Troutman from Dayton I would love for him to be good but what is what is he unleashing like the Broncos roster is just not good courland Sutton is a good number two wide receiver Josh Reynolds didn't we watch him drop a bunch of passes in a big game for the Lions Marvin Mims last year Shawn Payton spent the whole whole season saying they need to get Marvin Mims more involved and then they draft Troy Franklin who in my opinion is a similar player you want him to be a deep threat down the field he might not have made the team if it weren't for how high he was drafted so I don't think he changes the the Futures I I wouldn't change your fantasy ADP on Marvin Mims because of Troy Franklin right right right right Absol but like javante Williams people were worried about his health Julio mlin is a is a good you know depth running back but estim is not a very fast player the rookie running back out of Notre Dame Troutman Greg doic I mean what are we unleashing here look they have a pretty decent offensive line I will give you that so if anything they need to run the football and minimize B Knicks I I guess I'm I'm just sick of the Shawn pyton love because I feel like any support for the Broncos right now comes from like confidence in Shawn Payton Shawn pton has won like three playoff games since I was in high school Luke I'm in my 30s he hasn't won a Super Bowl since 2009 like Shawn pyton is not one of the best coaches in the NFL anymore he's not a coach in my opinion that is a huge difference maker like Shawn pyton is not the reason that you're winning games Bo Knicks is not going to be the reason that you're winning games you took a quarterback in the first round who at maximum is a game manager and the reason you do that is because you think that your head football coach is so great and so talented and is such a big differen maker that he can do it with that and I just don't agree with any of it I don't agree with Bo Nicks being a good player I don't agree with Shawn pyton being a Difference Maker as a coach at this stage in his career look Shawn pyton has been a Difference Maker in his career like if you look at the totality of Shawn Payton's career he's a very good coach but right now in 2024 I do not see Shawn Payton as a difference making head coach and their roster is I mean I know they got some players on defense that are pretty good obviously Pat ceran I know that there are other guys on there but they just don't have anywhere near a good enough roster for me to look at it and be like oh yeah Shawn Payton's such a great coach he's gonna take them to the playoffs I think the Broncos have a better chance to having a top three pick and contemplating taking another quarterback I mean am I crazy here it's that time of year everybody got everybody's looking at 10 wins and maybe a chance at the division right right he's Eternal like yeah right I like here's what I see in in the preseason the way that b knck like schematically the way Shawn hand Shawn Payton handled B Knicks was not becoming of a guy that has confidence in his quarterback the way the Bears handled Caleb Williams that's a team that has confidence in their quarterback right they were calling deeper Concepts they were calling more complicated reads and sometimes he would bail on that and just do his own thing but they let him right B Knick did what he did at Oregon quick game one step drops you know Slants stick Classics and that's fine but that's like the offense you install for a backup quarterback now it's the pre-season so everybody's going to say well of course he was he was hiding all of his good stuff but the preseason is where you run your Staples like that's where you run the stuff that you're going to rely on game in and gay out game out the the subversions on that are what you say for the regular season but the base of your offense is what you install run practice in the preseason so it's telling us that we're going to see the same bow Knicks low low depth of Target five yards four yards hope guys can make plays after the catch and I just don't see who is making major plays after the catch here on this offense I I agree with you that the defense looks interesting look when you have Pat ceran everybody's job gets a lot easier but like I like Cody Barton I like John Franklin Myers I like Zack Allen like I like a lot of these players on defense but I think we're going to see this is not going to be a highflying team I think this is going to be a team that you know plays 16 to 20 games and Shawn Payton's he's he's busting out his old Drew Brees playbook for a rookie I would not feel great about that if I were a Broncos fan no absolutely not I just want to say I'm a John Franklin Meyers Stan I know that that's a very obscure player to stand in the NFL but I am but I I think that like what you're saying he didn't want Russell Wilson Shawn pyton didn't want Russell Wilson because Russell Wilson couldn't play well enough in the structure of his offense which to me is saying my offense is so great that if a robot just goes out there and does what I tell him to then we're gonna be good and and that is the bet that the Broncos have made here with but enough about Kyle shenan right right like he is not Kyle sh he's not to me that's a losing bet and I made the joke about hating on the Broncos early because I didn't like the Russell Wilson trade for the Broncos I was public about that I didn't like all the they paid to pton and the trade that they made to get him I don't think either of those are winning moves I don't think either of those change the future for the Broncos I think they'll both be looked at as mistakes and seeing this B Nick situation and the way that Shawn Payton has handled it and the just the self- congratulatory nature of Shawn pton here to me it just reminds me of John guden coming back and going to the Raiders and I know that that failed in a different way with a different ending there but I think the ending will all be the same at the end this doesn't work and eventually the Broncos are going to have to move on from Shawn pton and realize that their last two big swings were misses but with that being said it's going to get darker yeah I think it gets worse before it gets better uh the the what is it that the night gets darkest before the dawn uh before the dawn and it's not dark enough yet no it is not sorry Broncos fans you have to suffer more you share a division with Pat Mahomes it's going to be bad for another decade darkness and Denver that's what we'll name this segment right here but with that being said that is going to
