Bills OTAs Week 3: Could old Von Miller be back? + Keon Coleman & DB get physical!

what's up everyone welcome into another OTAs Edition the last OTAs edition of shouted Buffalo Bills football podcast he's Ryan Talbot I am Matt Perino set the stage for you a little bit set the table if you will a lot to dive into a lot to digest over the course of this episode we're gonna talk a little bit about Von Miller uh an all the eyes emoji Keon Coleman rep today that we're going to dive into as well um I have some Gable Ste ston First Impressions uh we'll get into that one wide receiver continues to shine here during the uh shorts and t-shirts portion of this thing and I'm gonna give you a couple of risers um and maybe a couple of our I don't want to say like fallers but guys that we're keeping our eye on as we we push forward to mandatory mini camp and obviously with training camp how are you Ryan tber I am doing great and excited to unpack this last week of OTAs yeah so let's get into it uh start right off the Jump with Von Miller and you know every week that goes by Ryan I feel like I hear from somebody um shout out to kbob in the comments one of our regulars one of our insiders hello and welcome in I hear from somebody almost every week on like what's going on with Von Miller what are your expectations for him this year and I felt like today was the perfect day to kind of put things into Focus for where things sit with V because we heard from him after practice he had his best practice day um of OTAs by far he did the most he's done to this point so that has part to do with it um luckily for him he's going up against Lyall Collins on a couple of reps and I've been on record saying that it's been a tough spring here for for Lyall Collins Deon Dawkins wasn't there today Spencer Brown continues to do only individual so they weren't there uh participating which G gave opportunities to guys like Ryan vandemark guys like um Lyall Collins and you know Von Miller just looked he looked the fastest he's looked in the pr practice setting uh that I can remember since the injury you know you saw some Bend you saw some burst you saw some explosiveness he combined for a sack with Greg Russo on one play then got around on another one that you know got blown dead because he was just back there so fast almost so that like it's almost like you ever play like touch football Ryan and you like touch the guy and and just kind of like stop running completely and just kind of come off to the side because it was so easy like there was no contestation like that was the play for Von Miller so he comes off the field you could tell like the just the vibe with him is a little bit different on the practice field he said after practice all last season he was practicing with the brace because he couldn't go through a full practice without it and he's spent this whole offseason without the brace which is progress yeah that's huge listen the brace is there to protect you it's there to you know to keep you safe especially coming off such a serious injury but it also can hinder you it can hinder uh your mobility and how quickly you can get around it's also something in the back of your mind in terms of uh am I really at 100% I'm still wearing this thing and we saw the results last season he looked like a shell of himself uh he wasn't getting after the quarterback there were games where he was hardly being used there were times that uh one time that he was inactive so the bills kind of realized last year this is not the Von Miller that they shelled out a lot of money to you know the the early Von Miller was getting almost a sack of game before the injury and was was producing for this team if they can even get half of that or three fourths of that back this season from Von Miller this defensive line is going to be a lot better than some people are expecting uh one of our insiders Kyle uh Piper sent in a question because I sent all of these observations that we're going to go over and even more uh to the Insiders as soon as practice finished that was the earliest can get things out to folks um and I I talked about his day and he said Matt would you say Van's big day was a result of him actually looking healthier or was this just another bad practice day for Lyall Collins and I think it's a combination of both right Kyle like it's on one hand like I mentioned like this guy is moving differently like you could see that all the time spent getting that knee rehabbed you know one of the things too that has been a staple of Von Miller on the practice field is like he does this thing that at the end of a play a lot of times running backs will run to the opposite goal line after they take a running play or if they catch a pass Von Miller does it as a defensive player and like almost to set the example like I'm gonna test my conditioning uh I don't know how much he was doing it last year we didn't get to see him in this practice setting as much especially during training camp he wasn't participating uh start of the year on pup so he's doing that on the practice field now and so I think he's like he's testing himself he's he's figuring out like how much he has left in the tank and after practice you know I asked him about it and he said he still wants to play two or three more years he wants to play multiple years his sons are young they're starting to finally understand what Dad does for a living and I think he wants to play long enough to show them you know what he is and you know to to be that I don't think he's G to settle for the version of the player that we saw last year but at the same time the optimism also takes a hit like when for the most optimistic person you'll ever meet that's Von Miller to come off the injury and have a season like he had last year it's tested him a lot in that department but he said he's steadfast in his belief that he could still be the player that he was and that's huge you know the belief is a big part of it the wins and practice settings are a part of it um feeling completely 100% healthy we know what Von Miller is capable of over the course of his career and yes he's no longer in his prime you look at the age you look at the injury history but this is still a player that can get you seven to 10 sacks in a year and that's exactly what the bills would probably love to get out of him at this point in time so the fact that he's testing you know the conditioning the fact that he wants to show his kids what he does this is going to have be a very motivated Von Miller this year to show that there still is plenty left in the tank I know there's a lot of years on the deal that bills the bills gave him but obviously there's an out after this season so he's also in a way Matt auditioning showing that he still can produce in this league whether it's with the bills or some else here down the road and I don't think that like if it doesn't go his way he's almost got both feet in right like one foot is in the NFL uh player pool and the other foot seems to be in that NFL front office pool that maybe he's eyeing after his playing career is over and it sounds to me like he's not going to be one of those guys that tries to lie to himself like if he gets out there the first couple of weeks like I'm not sitting here predicting that Von Miller is going to up and retire right like I mean he's getting paid a lot of money sign that big contract I think he wants to give as much as he can give but it's one of those situations where if you don't have it after a while that that beats down on your mentality and so I think we'll know early on this season like what version of Von Miller is there what the potential is there and honestly this whole situation really heightens the expectations around guys like Dwayne Smoot and AJ Essa and Greg Russo of course a youngster like Javon Solomon who you got a temp for your expectations for him but at the same time it's like listen you're a fifth round draft pick like you got you got to do something you got to produce something you got to like give something otherwise the bills are gonna have to you know make a lot of decisions here over the next month and maybe that transitions nicely into something that you know I've gotten a lot of questions on and maybe we should spend a minute here talking about and that is the post June 1 money that the bills have so like they're sitting at about $10 million in cap space they just signed all their rookies uh and being said that estimated except for Keon Coleman um estimated it's going to be around 4 million to sign the rookie class uh then you got to figure in some some costs for the practice squad as well so that leaves you with somewhere in the in the neighborhood of five to six million dollars to do something with now um sure uh you can do something right now you can make a move the bills did it last year with Leonard Floyd I don't know number one if there's a Leonard Floyd out there for that move this year at this time and you know if you have an an option out there Ryan I'd love to hear it but but I also think that Brandon Bean can kind of slow play this and maybe if you don't move use the money now you can potentially use it in season even and maybe like a trade deadline deal yeah I'm not in a rush to use this now you want to get some of these younger players reps like uh Solomon because I know defensive end is a position that a lot of player uh people talk about I know you know guys like Emanuel agba and there are other players out there that would be intriguing uh but injuries in season happen all the time injuries at training camp happen all the time there's surprise cuts that occur at the end of the summer that maybe the bills would be interested in bringing a player in uh after a whole you know all of training camp all the preseason they say well this is still a pretty big need in our books and someone gets caught then the money could get used and then obviously trade deadline as well because if the bills are going to be uh you know trying to make a move at that point in time a little bit of extra money never hurts so I don't feel like this is the time where they have to go out and spend the money I don't think that there is a glaring need right now on this roster uh I have said cornerback if I were to spend that money and there are some notable names on the market but I I still think this is a time that you wait and see Matt in terms of why waste the money I don't want to say waste why spend the money now when you might need it on another position or another point of the year where it would be more important so I agree with you on the position right like cornerback is an area where you look at the depth chart after Douglas and Benford then you have um uh what's his name kyum Kyrie Elum right then after that it's a lot of unproven younger players so I get the idea of okay bringing a veteran to compete but what do you do when you do that you take away reps from these younger guys that you kind of want to see and if if I'm a guy sitting out there right now like a Steven Nelson or a Stefan G Moore you know throw any name out there xaven Howard I don't really want to participate in the spring and I don't know how much I even want to participate in training camp maybe you're at the the stage of your career where you're like I'm a Hired Gun I'm gonna come in I'm gonna learn the Playbook I don't need a ton of time you saw the success that a guy like rul Douglas a veteran came in halfway through last year and had in this defense so I think it's one of those things where you just you kind of hang out you wait you give Jamarcus Ingram this spring and summer to kind of show you what he's worth and that's a good transition Point here because he he showed up in a big way today and you know with Douglas not participating in the voluntary portion gives guys like Elum guys like Ingram more opportunities Ingram one-on-one with Keon Coleman today and it was buckle up man get get up to the front of the seat or front of your chair and uh you know take a peak very physical rep between Coleman and Ingram during an 11 and 11 drill so much show that the back and forth the physicality it went beyond the five yards it went into the defensive sideline like where the players are standing watching the play uh rushed into that part of the you heard some hooting and hollering uh from the defensive players uh good energy like a good like physical rep Coleman comes back on the next play great footwork um nice well-run run route and he showed off his footwork a little bit and he gets open of course the ball went out the other side of the field so he couldn't cash in on that but beat Ingram on that play So the back and forth the competition really good things and I think it's good for Coleman to get those kind of experiences in the spring but also a guy like Ingram that's trying to say I'm here I'm part of this competition and you know I'm a valuable depth piece on this team yeah and it's important for him to show up against some of the bigger names and Keon Coleman's a bigger name at wide receiver for this team obviously the bills spent the first pick of the second round on him they have big plans for him so if he can also show up when they have khil Shakir on you know on the outside or if they have them matched up with Curtis Samuel or whomever it is if he can have those reps where he's winning or he's holding his own at least 5050 split something along those lines that only helps his cause in terms of holding on to a depth position on this team he's had some nice moments in his career here in Buffalo there was a game a few years ago where he got called into action against Miami and he held his own he looked the part he's played well when given those opportunities uh but you know every year there's that turnover there's new competition there's new faces here so Ingram needs to continue to show up and have those plays and have those moments so certainly encouraging and Matt you know based on some of the things you shared with the Insiders not the only member of the secondary that had another pretty strong practice another Demar Hamlin type of day correct yeah yeah there was a big play in practice dear Hamlin makes his uh presence felt I mean taking advantage of reps with Mike Edwards dealing with a shoulder issue you know he's working off to the side he went through some of the walkthrough stuff today but he's not participating you got a guy in Cole Bishop a young player who's you know this is all going really fast for them as he they're trying to install things for him so you got tayor wrap who's that experienced veteran and then you look down that safety depth chart and with Edwards out you know they bring in D Delaney who's still trying to get up to speed in his own right and you know they draft Cole Bishop but dear H's in a really good spot like to to have a good summer is going to put himself in a really good spot to make this team again and you know being part of you know the the plans here and he's played a lot of important snaps the play in question uh that you bring up and before I get into this become an Insider right now I want to give a shout out to 350 people that are right now joined up signed up to be a shout Buffalo Bills Insider it's on a text line uh it's it's one to two communication between myself and Ryan and yourself as a Bills fan uh we send out texts you could send in texts yourself we'll respond to those uh after every practice I send you everything that I filmed video wise so you can kind of get of course the observations that I send out which are pretty detailed but you can get a little bit of the feel on the practice field like what was it like watching guys go through drills what do they look like out there all those kinds of things stuff more video than I've ever taken at practice I'm just feeding That Into The Insider text line and you become an Insider today 716 528 6727 uh textt that number you get a free trial 3.99 a month after that and then um you could also go to join sub text.com shout Buffalo Bills walk through everything of training camp because this thing is going to go from massive to just absolutely Monumental once we start uh training camp yeah training camp was the time last year where it really you know blew up for the first time it was pretty new at that point in time uh but we were communicating with the Insiders left and right we were sending videos we were sending texts and updates uh letting them know our observations before anyone else heard about them before we did our shout podcast before you wrote your observation articles so uh it put you at the front of the line to get all of the Bills news first and uh you know then you then you look like The Insider to all your buddies as you're sharing that info as well right uh the shout text line is brought to you by Carrie C buer attorney with the law offices of Francis M lro located at 237 Main Street in Buffalo New York if you are someone you know seriously injured give Carrie a call 716 85212 34 or check out Lola law.com all right Demar Hamlin uh Josh Allen tries to sneak one in there it wasn't a very well uh time pass or didn't have enough velocity in it he was trying to kind of maybe fit it in on the other side of things uh of the defender gets tipped Hamlin goes up gets both hands on it and you think okay Ham's gonna get another interception here he doesn't a he's not able to pick it off it bounces off his hands and who's there new middle linebacker Dion Jones comes flying into the picture Picks It Off makes a big play with Matt Milano watching off on the sidelines there uh definitely uh approval rating through the roof it's a good play for a guy that you know I think is going to be fighting for a roster spot fighting to make this team in in the summer uh big time play and again Demar Hamlin finding away to make a little bit of noise and it's big for him we've talked about this you can't even imagine the mental hurdles that he went through last year returning to the field uh suiting up again saying that he still wanted to play I think there's probably even mental hurdles for this coaching staff in terms of you know he he's earned a spot on this roster but we don't want want to see something happen again we don't want to experience something like that ever again so I think now that they you know he didn't have to play much on defense he did some special teams reps now it's another year later he's showing that he he uh can go he wants a shot at playing one of those depth spots at safety on this team and now for the second straight week he's made a big play in OTAs it's great now obviously once the pad uh pads come out on he needs to continue that but these are all encouraging signs for Demar Hamlin who you know uh a few years ago like you said played significant reps when there were injuries here he has shown that he can contribute he can play that depth rill he knows this defense those are all things that work in his favor when it comes to maybe claiming that safety number four or safety number five spot I wanted to add in a little bit while we're on the safety position a little note here on Cole Bishop like the first couple of weeks you go back to rookie mini camp first couple weeks of OTAs you know a lot of people asking how's Cole Bishop look how how much does he look and the the thing that I would tell everybody is like I'm not noticing a lot of plays but what I am noticing is is a guy that's just kind of going through everything and just kind of experiencing it for the first time in a brand new defense right like a lot of things like light bulbs are going off every single play like how to go through things I thought today was the most like um engaged and I say engag age because it seemed like he really knew what he wanted to do what he was supposed to do and like moving around with a purpose I think that's a better way to say it rather than engaged he was engaged F the whole time but I think like it's one thing to kind of be operating at maybe 80% of the speed because you're getting to know what your responsibilities are versus going out there and knowing what you're supposed to do today he was flying around all of his responsibilities you could just see things kind of firing in a little bit of a different way no big plays but but I think that that's development to have that happen over the course of the spring and have that kind of at a at an advanced level by the time you get to the summer yeah and for rookies Matt this is a learning process it takes time you're learning The Playbook uh what you did in college in terms of the terminology could be completely different the responsibilities in terms of what the bills might want him to do could be completely different so you have to give a lot of these players that learning curve uh more times than not players don't come right in as as rookies whether you're talking day one or day two or day three picks uh and just kind of set the league on fire they need that time now by the middle of training camp by late in training camp I think we'll see a completely different player in terms of even better than what we're seeing now you're starting to see the signs of understanding the defense playing free playing fast the more reps that he gets the more time that he gets with the coaches in terms of looking at film or or you know working over that Playbook the better it's going to be for Cole Bishop dude shout out to Robert BTO here in the YouTube uh comments just became a Insider we just shot up two people actually we're up to 352 that's that's pretty awesome great stuff um you know I I mentioned um Demar Hamlin we talked a little bit about him uh Deon Jones making a play I want to talk a little bit more about Chase Claypool man like I know I was high on him when they when high on the move when they signed him right but get getting a chance to see him inside the building inside the offense I don't know how much it is maybe just the the 14 on his jersey and like the memories that come back about what the guy in that number did before him but he just looks so comfortable in all areas like you know every week like it's the little things like he had two plays today Ryan that you know you want to talk about ota's Riser if I was putting making a list he and maybe I will do an article on that before for the weekend maybe I I put CH Chase Claypool at number one based off of what um sha mcder said about him at the beginning of OTAs and now what he's done out on the practice field like he just looks comfortable he looks like he's showing off his entire repertoire today he was one-on-one with Kyer Elum and it was just Sensational footwork on the route like so much show that in and out of a break make KY elim fall a little bit and he comes back he makes a a really nice catch on the ball on a ball thrown by Josh Allen that makes the play of the day on a Mitchell trabis deep ball um which by the way I got to ask you about this do I light up when I talk about Mitchell trabis I don't think you necessarily light up about him I I think that you know that he's a a player that in the practice setting uh does a nice job with the bills completely different usually when the the the regular game setting hits if you ever need them but he's a quality backup especially in a practice setting I got a little needling from Matthew in The Insider text line today he said yeah you light up when you talk about Mitch trabis nothing wrong with it I just get a kick out of it um no I just I want to bring that out because I thought it was funny because I did send out a couple um trabis notes today but it was a really nice deep ball down the middle of the field Bishop was close uh but it was just Claypool running past the coverage and he's wide open for a touchdown it was um a really nice play and and a play that like your going to remember over the course of time and you know I was talking with danger and baglia today about on um the fan in Rochester about like the OTA proposal and how that could potentially change the off season for coaches and for general managers like these times like I think you could learn a lot about how players go through the motions of voluntary workouts when it's you're in shorts you're going to like half speed if a guy's going out there and actually like making plays and setting a standard setting an example I mean I think that that that means a lot and you could kind of use that momentum to push towards the summer absolutely and you know we've talked about this with Chase Claypool he has not been in the best situations for the majority of his career early on he still had Ben rothberger who was throwing the ball well once rothberg's arm went though you saw he dip in production you saw him get traded to the Bears and uh for a second round pick mind you so can't blame Pittsburgh for moving on from him the Bears offense has been a train wreck for the last five six seven eight years uh it looks pretty promising now with the new regime new quarterback and wide receivers but that's been a mess and then he get he comes to Miami and a lot of things are predicated on timing in Miami he didn't have a ton of opportunities there with the wide receivers that were in front of him so I'm not even going to hold that against him in Buffalo this is a fresh start he's getting to play with an elite quarterback and Josh Allen and he's getting opportunities where he knows he's probably running out of them Matt and yes he's still a very young player but in this league you know there's a lot of guys that after their third fourth fifth opportunity if it's just not clicking they don't get that next chance that other chance and for clay PO he might because of when where he was drafted what he did early in his career but it's going to be fun to watch him at training camp because this is someone that could push for a wide receiver five type of spot and really cement himself in a role like that uh based on if he continues to make plays down the field if he shows sure hands there's some opportunities for big larger uh physical presences at that wide receiver position as we've seen them draft Keon Coleman bring in uh Chase Claypool even you know a faster taller Target like a mvs there's opportunities to be had and right now Claypool is making the most of them mvs before we move on from the receivers um no Justin shorter or KJ hamler at practice today which I thought was interesting um but Marquez Valdez gantley made his first big play uh today I think it was Taylor rap and Christian Benford who were the closest in coverage and mvs just ran a really nice route showed what he could do with his speed and his route running when it's dialed in uh he gets open Josh Allen puts a dime on him and it's 25 yard gain easily some run after the catch so you see that and you're like okay he's starting to get up to speed he's starting to get involved like the camp battles at receiver I mean they're going to be really fun to watch because M Holland has gotten all this praise for everything that he's been like how redundant is a Mac Hollands in a Chase clay pool and some of the skills that mvs brings like how much what are the differences there you know I think that MBS and and claypool's deep part of their game is is similar I think claypool's more of like a freight train whereas mvs is a little bit more like running away from you a little bit at times um but if they're going to give you those things how many guys can you get on the field if you got Shakir Keon Coleman and Curtis Samuel who are kind of like your deao trio trio we'll see how the numbers play out but a lot of interesting interesting questions at receiver yeah and it pushes a guy like Justin shorter potentially uh off the roster onto the practice squad someone that you said you didn't see out there today so it could be maybe one of the veterans go but if those guys are the ones making plays it makes it harder for the bills to justify keeping a player even a younger all right let's move this thing along um get to the uh defensive side of the ball I want to talk about a couple defensive lineman here uh before we get you out of here on this Tuesday evening now five o'clock a little bit later than usual uh I have some new technology that we're going to be kind of messing uh messing around with over the next couple of months here especially a training camp uh for the Insiders and the YouTube channel like there there's there's so many ideas that we have for it um so I was kind of messing around with it a little bit before I left the facility so that was why I was so late um let's go to the defensive line couple guys making some plays and I want to start with a BigTime Riser and that is DNE Carter who is just all gas no breaks 110% every minute he's out on a football field I sent a couple videos of him out to the inside iders uh a little bit earlier this afternoon and you know he makes a couple plays in this game he combines for a sack with Kingsley Jonathan you know there's a play where a running back catches catches the ball and kind of running through his uh running through the play and there you see Carter come from out off your screen if you will running him down chasing after him he's like he just never stops like he's got that motor you see it what they really value at that interior line position I think that he seems so comfortable already which I think is huge we'll see how much of the defense that he knows and how much they trust him but I think he puts a guy like you know DeShaun Williams on notice well you know looking for that fifth defensive tackle spot like you're gonna have to earn it because I think Carter's gonna put a lot of pressure on those guys Johnson too yeah and Carter came in Matt with with all of this praise in terms of the character the multiple time captain at Duke uh Mr Duke in fact and you saw him perform on the field and that was what a lot of the draft analysts said is uh a motor that never stops and the bills love players like that the coaching staff loves players like that the way that they rotate these defensive tackles this makes him a great fit because you have Ed Oliver you have um dcoin Jones as your top two guys but there's opportunities with the way that they rotate their defensive tackles and defensive ends for a lot of these depth players these younger players to come in and get their reps and for Carter he could play a significant uh role for this team maybe on passing Downs maybe you have him lined up with Ed Oliver maybe you give some different looks uh in terms of who you have out there based on the situations and if he continues to perform like this through training camp the way that I think this coaching staff thinks that he will he's gonna have a bigger role than uh maybe a few other members of this rookie class who were taken in that you know day two early day three area because he's going to be given those opportunities based on what we've seen in the past with Shawn mcder and the way that he utilizes this dline Ed Oliver would never ever admit this even if it was true but sometimes when you watch him out on the practice field in this setting with shorts and t-shirts you're just like man like how much is he just going like 50% and not because like I'm not saying like he's dogging it I just think that it's like when he puts 100% on you it's overwhelming and like there's times when I just want if like man if he is just not flying off the handle and like just putting guys in a bind there was a rep today where he split Alec Anderson and Lyall Collins and it was just like pads are not it's one of those plays where you're just like that's so impressive he gets up he bats down a ball at the line of scrimmage it's like I feel like Ed Oliver On Any Given practice day could just be an absolute game wrecker and we're gonna talk about stevon in a second what a guy to learn from to to see a guy go through the process of what it means to be an elite level defensive lineman on the interior you know Oliver does that on the regular even when I feel like you know maybe it's not 100% speed Oliver is so fun to watch because he can turn it on whenever he wants so I I know exactly what you mean in terms of he's not dogging it but it's almost like you're right he can be such a game record that he can ruin uh what the bills maybe are trying to install and do in a given setting because he can beat his guys so easily at times when he does turn it on whether it's in the one-on-one match of whether it's uh at training camp in the in the seven on sevs or whatever uh he he really can just flash at times when he wants to and just ruin a play and end a play before it can even get started and you saw that on the field last year he has this breakout season uh I know late in the year he had some struggles but overall he was just someone that was making play after play last season for this team even after they lost Jones early in the year uh with the peck injury against Jacksonville so the guy is the limit still for this guy he's still a very young player it feels like he's been in the league for quite some time uh but he is someone that's gonna this is why I said I'm excited about this defensive lineman if you get Von Miller 75% of what he's been in the past and you have Ed Oliver build off what he did last year a healthy dcoin Jones uh epinesa Greg Russo who we've talked up in terms of being healthy and looking great and then those depth guys like Carter and Company this defensive line can really make life easier for the back end of this defense that's going to look a lot different now that Trey White's gone now that you're starting safety from the past few seasons you know Jordan puyer in Miami Micah Hyde still undecided on his future are all gone if they can win up front push the quarterback off his Mark make him hold on the ball a half second longer it's going to help on that back end where there's going to be some new faces and new contributors um man of war or in the house on YouTube one of our uh old school regulars I give a little bit of shout out here a question on YouTube um what are your realistic uh expectations this year for the bills with a hard schedule and no number one wide receiver will they make the playoffs or are they in contention for a Super Bowl Ryan you know we we did the record game by game prediction recently our last show at Wing nuts and we both landed on about 12 wins uh you know I was expecting anywhere from 10 to 12 range give or take when I saw the schedule come out I like some of the the matchups in terms of how they work out for example one of the Jets games coming off of their London matchup uh the game that the bills have coming off of their bu against a very tough opponent the bills are really good in those situations so it swinged you know some of those games in in their favor so I have them definitely making the playoffs uh in terms of the Super Bowl once you're in you're you're a contender you're a threat to maybe be there the bills have been the last few years in terms of a legitimate Super Bowl Contender I know they've lost a lot of Talent on both sides of the ball but they've also replaced a lot of that Talent with some really good players via free agency in the draft so I I see a playoffs absolutely and yes I expect them to be right there with the Chiefs the Bengals if if you get a healthy Joe burrow back uh the Texans of the world the Ravens of the world the bills are going to be able to go you know right up with those types of teams and beating a team like the Chiefs in the playoffs has been this team's Achilles heel but uh I still see them being a viable threat in the playoffs I could I can Envision even like if you want to look at like the bad scenario of where like maybe things take a little bit of time to develop offensively With The Changes maybe the defense isn't as strong as it was a year ago all those kinds of worries that I think Bills fans have if you bake that in I do think that this is a group led by the coach led by the the the quarterback that can win games as you're trying to figure things out and staying with your head above water a little bit and you may have to do that like maybe the the transition away from Mitch Morris into this Conor McGovern Le offensive line isn't as seamless you know Deon Dawkins signed a huge extension like he's played really well conveniently in a couple of contract years like you know it's something that somebody brought up to me recently that I didn't really put together um so we'll see does he does his play dip back at all or is he still at the same level you know David Edwards in at left guard there's there's a bunch of different things and there's a you know a new offense like with a new play caller that's gonna have his imprint on this thing so of course there's there's questions but I just think there's more questions elsewhere in the division I think the bills still win the division I think they win somewhere between 10 and 12 games I think it's probably going to take 11 to win the division uh we landed at 12 I think they can win 11 uh and win the division and you know there's a lot of potential problems ruin in Miami now like when's two gonna get that contract Tyreek Hill wants another B yeah but when's he gonna get his money so all these little things and I'm so interested to see how Aaron roders does and that offense and I I if if he's the same guy that he was and if he's not how does that whole storyline kind of materialize yeah all you know valid points Aaron Rogers been a few years since he has played like an elite quarterback obviously injury last year last his final season in Green Bay was not up to his standard so he's a few years removed from playing elite football and you see some of the videos of him at practice you see some analysts talking about he might be putting uh some weight on the other leg in some of these drills the way that he's moving and that's just a storyline to watch they have a lot of talent but this is a team that has found ways to implode the last few years they have they made a a big trade for a pass rusher who hasn't reported yet obviously wants uh reic that is who wants a new deal himself so you know there's some trouble Brewing it on both of those teams when it comes to the Jets and the Dolphins don't expect the Patriots to be a threat in that division it seems like a three- team Race but I don't see why the bills cannot uh win the division again before we get off the D line mat Gable steveson what were your initial thoughts yeah that's next up you know it's it's crazy it's like the guy you could see the talent like from an athleticism perspective to be out on a football field with NFL players and look like you know you're not out of place I think that's that's accomplishment number one right but the more you kind of dive into it and and really zero in on him I sent a couple of videos out to the Insiders like I mentioned and you know he's still just understanding the basic fundamentals like you know the whole defensive line went through a um uh uh a drill with a bunch of like tackle dummies and when you got to kind of run through there and like you the first one you slap it out of the way the second one you put a spin move the third one you do maybe like a Stutter Step swim or something like that whatever the case may be all of them went through it and then for stevon it was just like use your hands smack those things out of the way show your raw power and I think that's going to be a lot of it like even when we get to the game setting and you know I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility Ryan that we get to the preseason games and stevon doesn't even play like if he's not at a level where they feel comfortable and it's safe for him to go out there he's having to learn from the ground up I mean even Ed Oliver said today it's so cool to have a guy that has been where he's been competed you know gone to War by himself as like a wrestler when you don't have another 10 guys around you but he's like he couldn't imagine like learning football from like know the ground up like like stev's gonna be forced to Shawn mcder spent like 20 minutes with him after practice and a couple other young defensive linemen as well just going over Basics it's it's going to be like a process and it's one that I just don't think that we'll ever get to a place in the next year even where we can H we can have a definitive take on this thing because I don't think he's going to play this season and I think it's going to all come down to all right how does he look at this time next year as we start to project towards training camp if he's got a real shot to play real football yeah and I I said it along the same lines it' be in year two before I think we'll ever ever see him on the football field in in even a meaningful situation or Garbage time in the regular season so it takes a long time to learn the game he has the hand placement the hand strength he has the footwork the agility he checks a lot of boxes in terms of what you want from a defensive tackle defensive lineman he's already bulked up to 280 pounds so he's starting to fill out that frame in terms of what the bills probably want him at so all encouraging St Whispers he didn't look too 80 out there today that's one thing I will say okay and I'm not calling him a liar he may be 280 he is he's small like okay you know you you look at him in that group and you're kind of just like dude like how is this gonna play out Ed Oliver looks huge next to him that's saying something yeah so you right may maybe he did just kind of um he was at The Playmakers event he said 280 like it but he doesn't it doesn't look like he's wearing it doesn't look like he's carrying it around just yet and that might just be because of his um the way that he's built from wrestling and everything else but it it'll be a process for sure it's still interesting to see a guy like that who comes from a competitive sport that he's been able like you said to win these uh matches oneon-one and now to have to lean on teammates when that time comes can he develop and and come along can these defensive tackles on this roster help in terms of his progression along with the coaching from Sha McDermot it'll be something fun to watch this summer and you know as long as he sticks with this for the next year as well or two years as well following this year stick with us here on the sh podcast less than two weeks from tonight uh we are going to be live in 12 days actually at Wing nuts June 15th 6 PM come on the show will start at 7 pm the live podcast we'll talk bills we'll eat wings wings we'll drink delicious beers it's going to be an amazing time uh he's Ryan talin I'm M Perino we will see you for the next one next week is mandatory mini camp which means minimum two live shows on Tuesday and Wednesday maybe three If Shawn mcder wants them to practice this could be the first time in a while that they use all three mandatory days um it was a little sloppy out there today at times a lot of pre- snap penalties stuff like that they had the referees out there um so if that's something where you get to next week and they're not as crisp as mcder wants this is not a veteran lading group Ryan we might we might get three shows next week absolutely could definitely locked in for two so bills Mafia stick with us next week at least on Tuesday and Wednesday all right guys take care enjoy this beautiful week hopefully the rain holds off uh in Western New York
