Jets 2024 UDFA | QB Andrew Peasley The Unexpected Opportunist

[Music] what's the good word y'all it's your boy dkb here I'm diving into a scouting breakdown for our undrafted free agent quarterback Andrew Peasley where I didn't originally get around to because there was the whole um rookie mini camp competition situation going on between himself and OB suits who he ultimately being able to beat out but he's in a very interesting situation considering Jordan Travis's Rehabilitation schedule and when he may or may not be able to hit the field and that he could essentially end up making this 53 man roster as a uh insurance policy to Tyrod Taylor uh right when that role originally should probably I don't want to say be gifted to Jordan Travis but I'd fully expect him to be able to beat out and undra the free agent and Andrew Peasley who even himself uh admitted as much that he didn't expect uh to be drafted anyways right he played out his final year in Wyoming kind of assuming that that was going to be the end of his football career but he's coming into 6'2 218 lbs originally started out with Utah State for 4 years before transfering to Wyoming as a former three star recruit he was interesting because he's not not a guy I would have necessarily expected to win uh any kind of competitions not like it was a major one per se but uh prior to Wyoming he's really been mostly a reserve player who's had some spot starts uh and or playing time and so you're not talking about necessarily A A well-refined or well experienced player even though he's been in college for six years um he's really gotten the majority of his reps in just these final two years with Wyoming um and one of the interesting pieces that I kind of like about him again I talk about uh the aspect of winning a lot is that uh even in his short tenure right as a starter more than a third of his wins have been comeback victories right I think he had five uh in 20203 and a handful more in 2022 those numbers could be vice versa but I do like the affinity for a guy that can kind of will his team to Victory uh high levelwise right there's a lot that goes into that but honestly everybody kind of knew Andrew Peasley was going to be uh you know if they were going to if they were going to come across wins it was going to be due to his skill set and he brings some intriguing dual threat ability he's not a guy that I wouldn't necessarily pegged uh for his ground game when looking at him but some of the things that I really really liked is he understands how to get the ball out quickly I took a look at aside from just some of the tape and then of course some of the scouting reports I could dig up when I looked at him uh you can see the offensive line not necessarily being one that's going to hold up uh for a consistent 3 seconds or so and so you can see easily uh on film his Center uh you know crashing out and allowing pressure uh within the first you know half second to a second and whether was you know just solid play calling kind of the the ABS and flow of how defense goes whatever you want to call it he made a ton of plays to me where he got the ball out extremely quick even though he was going to have to uh you know stare down a guy that's going to drill him in his chest and uh that that's always something that you have to to keep in mind right from a mentality standpoint there's a lot of quarterbacks in the NFL when they've had opportunities that have had a solid to decent amount of success when they've been called upon just because uh mental fortitude for one and also uh just other elements of having that mental acuity uh when it comes to the game of football so love that he's willing to take the big hit to complete a play right and there's a ton of plays out there on film as well where his guys didn't even end up making a play for him right it hit him in the hands and they dropped it or somebody was able to kind of swipe a ball out last second but honestly a ton of those balls hit their guys uh in the numbers or on the hands where they needed to it wasn't a you know crazy play where they had to reach super far behind them or not so not the strongest receiving core anything across from him that's something that I also was keeping in mind but looking at him speaking of his dual threat ability he doesn't have uh Elite acceleration right out of the gate but there's a bit of a gidd up right if you want to talk about like a car going from 0 to 60 uh once he hits about his second gear you can see him moving that frame really starts to look like uh it could cause a problem for a linebacker quarterback safety that's trying to tackle him but he has a fair amount of you know finesse like running ability he can put his shoulder down and do some things but uh I'm honestly intrigued by how I seen him be able to run away from some guys but uh also in the midst of just trying to stare down making a play uh down the field he sensed a lot of the pressure around him and you know he'll get out of there in a hurry when it absolutely makes sense the sneaky speed the running back like Vision in the open field is going to be a plus for him and overall I just get the feeling that he has a game manager like ability that we could rely on in an emergency situation right and I don't want that to be super High Praise I just mean I don't think he'll be a detrimental piece of what happens for uh you know the New York Jets and whatever situation we end up seeing him on the field for an a regular season game uh ideally it doesn't come down to that right but between the fact that he can go out there and get skittish on the ground he can make plays uh within you know the first two seconds if things are breaking down and he has this uh you know plus elusiveness about him I like the way his footwork uh um uh is put together when he's also having pressure right there's uh that slide I'm going to say a lot of stuff on here that maybe sounds like High Praise but Tom Brady was a guy that used to frustrate me a lot because on when you're watching them play in real time you can see a guy that you know if it's anybody else it should be a sack right and Tom Brady would take that half foot step to the left or climb up a bit move back bounce to the right whatever it ended up being was very small minuscule movements on film but it bought him all the extra time in the world and you know a guy just blows right past them whatever it was for him to get that extra half second in order to sling the ball wherever he's going to and I kind of see that a little bit with Andrew Peasley uh obviously not super consistent or anything like that but just something to keep in mind in terms of some worries with him the the injury history is lengthy AC sprain he's had some uh broken ribs which I don't think ever got confirmed but it's out there hip issues knee issues uh and then he's also had a pretty consistent injury history even going back to high school so you wonder about his ability to hold up up even though he's packing uh you know almost a 220 lb frame probably could throw a little bit more on there but uh uh I won't even say it's all on his running style right or him being a dual threat quarterback he just seems like he's been uh on the unfavorable side on some of these hits and without come ended up being taking a look at his arm strength I'm not necessarily wow there's a couple factors here right one Wyoming didn't really operate a system that allowed for a ton of downfield throwing uh in fact I seen an interview where him and his top weapon and I think the name was like arist something uh but nonetheless they were essentially begging their coaches week after week after week to at least let them open up the game with a deep shot and you know that never really ended up materializing but you can see some of his balls get caught up in the wind and we're talking about stuff that's uh you know intermediate level or less uh when you see him to me it's not a guy where you talk about like a Patrick Mahomes a Josh Allen some of these guys with cannons where it's a you know a flick of a wrist and I think's going 70 yards he can be throwing a 15 to 20 yard you know out route or something along those lines but something in that yardage and it just looks like he's having to throw half of his body into it to get it on Target and again we're talking Wyoming football at that level it's going to be a huge jump up uh from what he's going to see in the NFL not a consistent spiral on the balls you're going to see some wobbles there there's some accuracy concerns um he's had mostly a sub 60% completion rate in college which isn't great and even his best year which was his final one in Wyoming I think it was only 62% um and then ball security he's had 15 fumbles over the course of his two years with Wyoming so um you know if you're going to be a game manager you have to be a master of M uh minimizing any potential issues to keep that ball out of the offense's hands um and that's not something he's really done now with that said he has impressed the training staff from what uh or the coaching staff I should say excuse me from what I've been able to read up on uh in terms of what's happening during uh rookie mini camp OTAs and the mandatory mini camp he's made some wild throws think I highlighted before that uh uh one of our beat writers did pred prct that he was going to have a huge you know half of a football game or a quarter whenever preseason games kick around so we'll see what he can offer but ultimately again he's in a very intriguing situation where uh he can end up making the the you know 53 man roster out of the gate for week one depending on how comfortable the Jets are rolling with Aaron Rogers and Tyrod Taylor on the roster and how these competitions and number games shake out at a number of these other uh situations we need to monitor like defensive tackle like safety like cornerback um you know wide receiver so tight
