have really struggled batting below 200 against him and it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball maybe it's the release point maybe it's the motion but just some way somehow they've got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side and he chases that one and there's one away good late cut for the strike out there that thing really got in on him and you know the cutter isn't really a huge swinging Miss pitch most of the time because it's not really meant to move a whole lot you're just trying to miss the big part of the barrel and maybe get some weak contact but that one right there did a whole lot more than that that was a really good pitch here's Riley green and the righty deals ball [Applause] two one out base is [Applause] Meadows just really solid numbers he's coming off of a month where he hit over 350 so when you talk about solid bats taking the walks driving in some runs he's doing it all right now Matt verling will hit next live Drive makes the grab and that'll end the inning three up three down for Detroit and now the Padres get their first opportunity in a scoreless ball game it's major league baseball and it's on the show back here in San Diego our starter in this one Casey M what do we need to know here yeah he's definitely had a struggle so far this year as evidenced by that inflated whip but he's going to have to find a way to limit the base runners put his team in a position to win a ball game so we know he's prepared we know this guy as a competitor and we'll watch how he works in this one kind of a weird pitch and a weird swing on that strike out it's just a slider that caught a lot of the plate I'd say a very hitable location but in the Box I think he just gave up on it way too early and by the time he realized it was dropping into the Zone he just fires off a really poor swing Carpenter right there to make the grab and there are two down the first as we take a look at the Padre's lineup a guy who's been huge for them over the last month plus Xander Bogarts well Bo just an on base machine last month he was on almost half the time and OBP over 450 just a really tough out I mean this guy's a catalyst for this offense right now now here's Jake cronenworth way upstairs and the count two and one [Applause] swings through that one for strike two instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in just misses with that one caught a break right there pretty good pitch on the outside corner fouled off again and it remains three the show back here at Petco Park and now the right fielder carry Carpenter all around I think if you asked anyone in this organization who's the best hitter in the lineup they would say him this is a bad who clearly performs better in Day games I don't know why but his numbers generally back it up and another [Applause] ball and now it's filled up it's amazing to look up and see 88 mph on that change off back in the day that was a pretty good fast ball but with high velocities these days that speed differential is right where it needs to be kicks indans swing and a miss Cur B the dir cusano collects fires the first got him one away on the strike out really good hard bite to that breaking ball for the strike out right there I mean he was able to bury it down below the zone and that's throwing the pitch with conviction good thing for the pitcher he's not going to miss in the zone and that's where you get hurt excellent execution with two strikes that could be a big weapon for him Center no grabs it on the run every day during batting practice these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps they practice this and when the game comes they make the play perfectly and left side young Bogart's retired that thei and here's the rookie center fielder Jackson [Applause] Merill and the two- on hammered but [Music] foul swings and misses struck him out well when you commit to throwing an inside fast ball to your glove side across the strike zone especially with two strikes if you're going to miss you want to miss off the plate in you do not want to leave it out over the heart of the plate so that was excellent execution on that pitch really tied him up and he couldn't get a piece at all kicks and fires swing and a miss and that strike two two ball two strik [Applause] he goes down looking hres go down quietly they lead it one nothing top half of the third inning and now the catcher comes up to him Jake Rogers here's a one-1 and no throw for some reason as he reaches first that's got to be an error back to the top of the Detroit order and stepping in is the Speedy Parker Meadows roll to short could be two off balance feed there's one but no throw to first as he'll hold on to it kind of hard to say if he ever had a shot at getting two outs on that one but a good job job just to take the extra time he needed to be sure of getting one and good throw to second base and next to hit for Detroit Riley green and here comes would chase that time [Applause] the pitch and ball for to a board oh he earned his trip to first right there it's not easy laying off pitches that just missed the Zone like that and it's a real discipline as well he's put a lot of work into that aspect of his game and it paid off right there one down now the left fielder Matt verling that one misses and that's ball three the last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground but but I wouldn't expect many pitches up in the zone they'll be pitching for a double play in this spot two on one out struck him out looking just locked him up right there for the second out and that's the bat he's probably going to be thinking about for a little while didn't pull the trigger not how you want to go down in an RBI spot so now you got to hope your teammate behind you can pick you up now it's the right fielder carry Carpenter two outs and another ball got Chris through the early stages he hasn't been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he's going to need to get some quick outs if he's going to get deeper into this [Applause] game Left Hand batter waights Meadows over at second green on it first with two now chases the fast ball up the ladder struck him out he's in a tough spot had to make a great pitch did it got the strike out gets out of the jam clearly not looking up in that location very difficult to catch up to especially with that velocity Tolson in position and puts the squeeze on that one and there's one down batting not short now at the plate for strike three well just excellent location on that inside fast ball really locked him up and it's a hitter it's not typically what you're looking for you're trying to protect away and then end so you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it' be called the ball but either way that's a really nice pitch so the lineup flips over profar climbs in pitch well these tigers as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate they're chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases that are turning into a bunch of outs can they turn that around and stay within the Zone we'll see but I think they have to into [Applause] Center merrow puts it away and there's one down [Applause] and next up for the Tigers Spencer tlon the pitch swing and a miss going to count one and two he's pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn't work out for success but he can never predict baseball in the air out for some guys one thing that I can see already his Bat stays in the Zone on plane for an extended period of time and guys like that they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane and even when you don't get it great it's still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder [Music] and the right-hander deals and he can't a pitch out to short McCoy throws across the diamond and a quick out number one well he's doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good execution now here's the Detroit catcher Jake Rogers and Chris his big strength is defense but it is interesting in today's world of baseball compared to when you played a good defensive catcher is considered differently whatever you get offensively is a bonus but he's got to put the fingers down he's got to present pitches to the Umpire they're going to help his pitcher get more strikes fouls one away and now three and two I think the other component is putting down the finger that the pitcher wants to throw and being on the same page and that's something that this guy does really well gets in sync with his pitchers came inside with that two strike fast ball nice and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate couldn't get around on it and catch it out front any times if you do it's a foul ball and you know a lot of pitchers they really don't like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter and when they've got him up against the ropes got to figure out a way to put him away did a nice job right there boo his preparation is off the charts I was down in the clubhouse today trying to find him just to pick his brain a little bit he's so buried in that video room ah well he settles under it in left and that will end the inning we head to the bottom of the fifth and now the center fielder Jackson Merill he's got pop which is a little sneaky because he's so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field but he can jump you if you make him mistake well we talk about throwing the hands but not the bat man you want to hold on to that thing and can see his teammates over there if he doesn't come through with the knock he's going to get some business when he goes back to the Dugout One Two now two balls two action in the pen down there time Madden getting loose for AJ hinch Holton also throwing the L to the pitch and it gets by him around first heading for two and he's into second with nobody Out rough start to guy's internal clock he knew he had plenty of time to take that extra step secure his grip on the baseball and make a strong accurate throw and up next for Detroit Matt verling one down BAS is empty fouls one off two and two and he deals gets a piece there we'll do it [Applause] again and a pitch swing and a miss struck him out picks up strikeout number seven went right after him with that two- strike pitch as he continues to roll on the mound yeah he's not out there trying to nibble at all he is a tacky in the strike zone and I think when your confidence builds as the start goes on still putting up all zeros on the scoreboard gives you a lot of confidence that you can really continue to go after these hitters and that wasn't the best pitch for the strike out there and he'd probably admit that but he got it by him carry Carpenter up now for the Tigers the one- one is fouled off now just about to hit that century mark 100 pitches for this game and a pitch and a swing and a miss look at Players like this you play that Hot Corner got to be pretty courageous over there with the way ball come off the bat that's the kind of guy that every year you expect him to be in the allstar game and have a gold glove if not a platinum glove well he was ready for that fast ball right there really turned on it hit it hard had the distance but just too much hook to it so might want to make a little bit of an adjustment let it travel a little more and see if you can keep that thing fair and he makes the catch and that will end the inning back here at Petco Park all set for the start of the inning here's the third baseman Jace Young looking to get the tying run on base oh that got away from him and he's going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning well he's just glad he got hit with an off speed pitch there instead of a fast ball man that would have hurt a lot more if it had velocity if you're a base runner you got to stay dialed in here look for anything in the dirt try your best to get in scoring position next pitch is downstairs activity in the bullpen for San Diego Jeremiah Estrada appears to be getting loose morol also getting ready right through there for a strike with two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here got him one out manager out of the Dugout now and it looks like we'll see a arm of the mound Tanner Scott he's having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season so this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate and next is the designated hitter Zack mckinstry swing and a miss he can live up in his Zone all game if hitters will chase it that's just too much velocity hitters got to look down in the [Applause] zone in the air center field merrow sizes this one up no trouble here puts it away for the out and there's two down well such a confidence boost for a relever to come into the ball game and get the first hitter he faces just makes everything slow down a little bit and then from there can really settle in and next to hit for Detroit try Sweeny two outs this to Third and it finds its way through for a hit throw in holds the lead runner at second two on now with two away I really like that swing man he didn't just push the other way through the infield he drove it that way and it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box got a pitch he liked and he got it done now we'll see if they can pick up that tie and run and start us over here in the late Innings digging in Jake
