Matt Strahm Baseball Card Art Talk with Mike Olson!

hey everyone I'm Mike from Mike wison art I hope everyone's having a great day today thank you so much for tuning in um wow what a you know wild week it's been um I really hope everyone was able to catch my appearance on the card life the other night um I cannot thank those guys enough for um you know reaching out and asking me to uh come on the program and get to talk about card art and a little bit more about my process for a while I'm in absolute honor uh I think I've spoken about it before but it was really Matt and Brandon and the card life in general that inspired me to pick these things up and start even doing card art again so just an absolute um amazing moment to uh get to be on the program and talk to them a little bit more about it so if you uh did get to see the show you'll notice that I was working on a card at the time and and that card is a card um of Matt it's going to be for Matt and uh it's really a tribute to his performance last year in the uh nlds uh Phillies played the Braves um game four it got down to the ninth inning uh there's a runner on first and third no outs um so who did they bring in Matt Strom and what did he do he uh totally kicked ass and won that game for for us so um I really wanted to make that card all about that moment and uh how how important and special it was not only to Matt but you know to everybody in Philly that was really rooting for him at that moment so um why don't we just take a look at the card I created so here is how the card ended up this is the one I was working on during the show this is a card of Matt uh the image is is uh image that I found online it's literally seconds after that third out and the Phillies uh we're going to move on to the next round so um I thought that would be a great image to use for the uh subject of the card and as you can see here the design of the card is actually a 1991 tops and I chose 1991 tops because Matt was born in 1991 so I wanted to do another birthday card and uh I thought that this would work out really great um this card in particular was fun to work on because you know I really love logos sometimes and this 40th anniversary logo was really cool to get to work on um learned a lot about tops 1991 and uh it's actually really interesting how many things tops uh decided to stop doing after this 1991 design came out um this was the last year where tops um you know used a wax pack this was the last time that tops included bubblegum in their cards and this is actually the last year that tops used brown cardboard um starting in 1992 they just went to White so um yeah three things that uh were really interesting that tops stopped doing after this card year so but uh Matt was born in 1991 so I wanted to do his card in the uh design of a 1991 so that is your card Front card back really talks about that night um I have uh a little tribute to Matt you know the date what game it was and then down here I really just wanted to break down and tell a little bit of the story of that night so it really sets the stage tells you how many Runners were on base and then I went you know one two three and uh you know talked about who came up and what the result was so it was a one two three performance by Matt so only had to put in three outs here but um this really I hope tells the story about that night and uh what he really came in to do which was I mean huge pressure situation I can't even imagine I was shaking you know trying to work on this card so I can't even imagine what it was like actually pitching this game so really impressive and really important to everybody here in Philadelphia so thank you and uh I hope everyone really loves how this came out I mean this is a blast to work on like I said uh Matt and the card life were really inspirational to me so I really hope he loves this and uh it was really great to be able to work on this one so thank you guys that's it I mean I hope everyone loves how that card turned out it was an honor to work on and just I can't tell you how much fun it was uh to actually be on the show and get to work on a card of mat um at the same time so thank you guys um hope everyone enjoyed the episode and like I always say if you're interested in some uh custom card art just reach out or uh head over to Mike Olsson art.com and uh drop me a message but uh thank you guys and uh I'll talk to you again soon bye
