all right coach first off just um initial thoughts day one yeah uh team is excited they're eager they're optimistic and they work really hard today just the beginning of the process for a long season and but I liked what I saw energy enthusiasm competitive spirit it's all in place I think you always see coaches kind of compare the first day of camp to a Christmas morning or something along those lines L um I mean I know you really like spring but did it kind of have that feeling today yeah I think it did um football was football and if you have the right organization and the right people in the organization they really look forward to being able to work and yeah the entire organization coaches and players were anxious to work today and they they love the game which is the equivalent of a gift so it's great what is the uh Camp structure in terms of here's when we're going to be moving into full pads and here's when we going completely live and how's that going to work out over the next couple weeks yeah the NCA sets that um so there's an acclamation period so there's a number of helmet days then that's usually two helmet days three shell days and then you can move into full pads there's only two two scrimmages you can have if it's over 50% of the plays Etc and so really the NCA sets that what happens in between once you get those benchmarks each coach kind of chooses what his team needs so I know you obviously have goals for this uh the ball camp but he kind of tell me what are the mini goals what are you hoping to get done what are you hoping to see the progression um you know day by day week by week you know yeah I think it's just that is progression and Improvement day by day week by week each unit within the team has specific goals and things they need to work on each side of the ball does and the team collectively and so those will work collectively and independently at the same time bottom line is uh to build a great program here step by step coach how would you describe the culture your the culture is based on accountability and discipline and effort and so we own everything that we do good and bad um we improve by the discipline and how we do it and we try really hard and that's those are the foundational kind of pillars I think at media days you said that you knew what the culture was of the team you didn't know what the identity was quite yet uh is fall Camp a place where you find the identity of the team and you learn that I think it's a start um I think a lot of times your team's ID in shape through the entire year and try to accelerate it in Fall Camp as much as you can um really difficult practicing and playing only against yourselves experience helps the lenses of time help once you start playing opponents and that ex um that expedites the process and so I'd love to have it done before the season rarely is it ever done before the season coach how was it seeing multiple quarterbacks take reps today it's great especially when they're capable and so when there's capable football players out there it's good for the team there's competition there's production there's energy there's excitement and it improves just our team on the note of the quarterbacks I don't know if I saw Justin holiday out there today with the with the QBs um is he here right now or he is and he's here with the quarterbacks he's with the quarterbacks okay you just talked about Devon uh the skills what were you liking out of him how's he fit right now yeah deon's a really good decision maker and I think he's uh natural in terms of his leadership uh he's youth by age but pretty seasoned and pretty poised in relation to that and with in relation to the experience he's had so Dynamic football player we're lucky to have them coach you took a Hiatus and I heard that you mentioned part of it was wanting to develop young people that's partially why you came back how has it been these last few months do you feel fulfilled in that way is it like a void that is finally your back and getting to do that again yeah I think it's um it it wasn't hard to identify that's what I missed most um but it's not only players young coaches as well with their families so young professionals is also something I'm drawn to and yeah it's uh I'm lucky to be able to do this I know you said spring was really hard and you know the guys coming in have some trouble is it only going to get tougher from here you know is it from your perspective I don't know how you improve without the expectations and the demand going up and so that's that's what's expect what are the expectations for your yeah expectations for year one personal Improvement everyone on the team program Improvement um and there's uh there's great football that can be played at New Mexico and there's consistent football yearly that can be played here um that's postseason that's conference contending that's uh exceptional and yeah over time that's the plan David Murphy tweeted out yesterday that he had been put on scholarship was he the only uh new guy to receive a scholarship yesterday yeah he was and he's deserving maybe the most deserving that I've ever seen he's an amazing young person and a great worker and really mattered to him and mattered to our team are all scholarships full at this point uh no not yet okay and um I think today was the first day we saw special teams analyst Brett Aran out there um obviously wasn't here in the spring what kind of led to his hiring in particular yeah pretty simple um ideal Staffing when you have off coordinators defensive coordinators and special teams coordinators we had two of the three spots full special teams is a huge emphasis of the University of New Mexico was last 12th in the conference a year ago field position actually determines outcome and really you get what you designed for and so we've been looking ever since I was hired to find the right person for that spot and yeah we are we're really excited about what bread brings what made him the right person experience capability competency Innovation uh enthusiasm and experience two more coach I know there's 14 principles for your program that you outlined correct and er notg has been talked about a lot what was the birth of that mentality and when did you first start going by that coaching principle yeah it's a a long story but I'll condense it I was hired at the University of Virginia first team meeting um I have a chance to address the team and and they struggled making eye contact and their posture was not encouraging and they were they were not in a good place um I changed what I was intending to say and realized um just the chance to get to play the game just the chance to get to where University colors just the chance to get to be part of a team um that's not to be taken for granted and so framing that organization and the growth that we put in place there um I don't think any of us are entitled to anything and man when you work really hard uh qualify it's different and it matters more and it means more so it started in a team meeting being introduced as the head coach at n of Virginia how important was it to get Aaron Rodriguez back in the PO this season he talked to me about a conversation he had with you and um he wasn't sure he was going to play football this year yeah and that's actually an amazing thing that a young person has such a bright future either through education or profession um but it's tough to choose whether to keep playing a game or not uh we also believe in the concept called and where you can play the game while and you become an amazing student an amazing professional and other things to our Point earlier field position matters and field position influences points and the punting game is huge in terms of a large play or a play for a large chunk of land land determines points in most cases so so back thank you
