to but never invested in the values and identity of a comic book anti-hero whose main appeal is a strong silent type shtick a little usually goes a long way with snake eyes because as with the other gii Joe characters there isn't much to the character Beyond some buzzy kid-friendly umbrella Concepts like loyalty and honesty so Snake Eyes big test of character is will he sell Tommy out to Kenta problem with with Snake Eyes gii Joe Origins is that it answers a question nobody wondered about and with dismally overproduced dialogue and action film making it's too polished to be a war crime but it's also too bland to be a decent Summer movie a lot of dialogue in Snake Eyes GI Joe Origins puffs up a convoluted story about stick figure characters who wander around found formerly exotic locations the neon lit alleys of Shinjuku a ninja fort's willowy cherry blossom fil Courtyard and talk at length about betraying and or testing each other everybody has a belabored Andor sassy answer to each other's questions like who's Cobra what's a GI Joe why do you want to befriend Tommy so badly and do you think we can trust this Snake Eyes Guy there's also not Much Chemistry Between the movies leads partly because they don't seem to share screen time for more than a second or two at a time also the action scenes are not only diminished by headache inducing handheld photography don't bother seeing this in IMAX but also cribed ideas from Superior action films like the villainous and the Matrix Reloaded p tendering to younger viewers isn't anything new or inherently evil but Snake Eyes gii Joe Origins takes too much time and demands so much energy just to throw together a bunch of hacky tropes that don't necessarily hang together I mean we are talking about a movie that starts with Snake Eyes stuffing an Uzi into the guts of a very large fish because how else are you going to smuggle weapons in the 21st century later a sightless ninja called Blind Master Peter Mena reveals that he owns camouflage fabric that allows him to blend into a stone wall and somewhere in between these two scenes is a barely coherent sparring match that pits Golding against Indonesian martial artist EO uise the Raid Redemption [Music] headshot who plays a hottie ninja named hard Master there are many other Gonzo ideas and scenes that could have been fun to look at in Snake Eyes gii Joe Origins but very few of them are actually entertaining pandering to Children isn't exactly new especially when it comes to big budget movies designed to oversell the importance of action figures but what's the point if in any given scene the best thing that can be said about what you're looking at is well they tried going through the motions is also not always the worst film making sin but it kind of is in a big budget spectacular that only ever looks adequately staged and blocked talk up the ritualized importance of family and H all you want but if there's nothing on screen that's eye-catching enough to Warrant all that self-serious talk that can be pretty deadly for all the snobbery over fast food McDonald's commands a certain respect for the uniformity and consistency of its products the reassuring knowledge that a Big Mac will taste the same in Spain South Africa or Switzerland but the odd American Tourist who decides to use a lunch abroad to investigate a foreign run Mickey D's franchise will find that while the menu Staples remain unaltered subtle additions have snuck their way onto those illuminated boards above the counter in Japan for example Intrepid lowbrow Foodies can sample such local Delicacies as the shrimp Patty AB filt or the sauce drizzled chocolate fries it's all comfortingly familiar in its slight novelty just different enough to add mild flavor to the mange of sameness that's the long and short of the new Snake Eyes a largely interchangeable hunk of Hollywood product somewhat distinguished by its Asiatic Regional particulars Robert schwenke's film arrives as both spin-off in prequel to a pair of Rah raw action GI Joe pictures featurelength toy advertisements from 2019 and 2013 long enough ago that no one's beholden to an elaborate architecture of continuity which must be buttressed and expanded the background of Team Joe's resident ninja Snake Eyes Henry Golding takes the shape of a martial arts showcase informed by both Japanese geki and Chinese wiia Cinemas an opao melding for a film set in Tokyo featuring Malaysian and Indonesian actors and primed for release in the lucrative Chinese market the international language uniting this panasian transpacific affair is the Beatdown delivered here with an inventive playfulness albeit with an impact Lesson by Leen Western techniques the early years of the boy who in his first test Snake Eyes is unable to seize a bowl of water from the Clan's hard master realizing this is a test of humility he succeeds by respectfully asking instead unbeknownst to the clan Snake Eyes has been tasked by Kenta with betraying Tommy their escape was staged to allow Snake Eyes to win Tommy's trust and to steal the Clan's sacred jewel of the Sun the Clan's head of security Akiko distrusts Snake Eyes but she accompanies him and Tom Army on a raid of kenta's gang they learn through an ally major Scarlet O'Hara that Kenta is allied with a terrorist organization cobra snake never invested in the values and identity of a comic book anti-hero whose main appeal is a strong silent type shtick a little usually goes a long way with snake eyes because as with the other gii Joe with Snake Eyes gii Joe Origins is that it answers a question nobody wondered about and with dismally overproduced dialogue and action film making it's too polished to be a war crime but it's also too
