After weeks of targeting each other on the campaign trail, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump came face to face for the first time tonight. In their first and perhaps only presidential debate, they covered big issues from the economy to immigration and abortion rights. Both candidates accusing other of line. So Marcina Benito and our verify team are fact checking both sides. Marcelino. Well, Mia, this was a highly anticipated debate between two candidates that met for the first time ever tonight. They debated the most important issues to voters starting with the economy. Take a listen, had no inflation. Uh look, we've had a terrible economy because inflation has, which is really known as a country buster. It breaks up countries. We have inflation like very few people have ever seen before. Probably the worst in our nation's history. We were at 21% but that's being generous. Trump's claim needs context. Our source, the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It's true. Inflation has been far worse under Biden than Trump peaking at 9.1% in June 2022 but it's not the worst in history that came in 1917 when inflation rose to 17.8%. It's also important to note inflation has fallen to its lowest level since March 2021. Next Vice President Harris went after Trump on abortion. If Donald Trump were to be re elected, he will sign a national abortion ban. Understand in his project 2025 there would be a national abortion a monitor that would be monitoring your pregnancies, your miscarriages. I think the American people believe that certain freedoms in particular, the freedom to make decisions about one's own body should not be made by the government. Trump reiterated tonight, he would not sign a national abortion ban. However, he has gone back and forth in recent months. Project 2025 does call for a national ban on abortion pills, but the former president maintains he's not associated with the plan. So harris' claim is inconclusive. Immigration also debated tonight and I think it's a lot higher than the 21 that's bigger than New York State. Pouring in our source here us customs border protection.
