We have new details about a driver involved in a crash that left one police officer dead and another one in critical condition. The Labor Day travel rush begins today. Why you may want to hit the road right now plus rate hike approved for a major home insurance company. But I was surprised when I found out I was the first one to do it. How a baseball player played for both teams in the same game. It's 6 a.m. on Thursday, August 29th and you're up with CBS eight. I know you're thinking, how is that possible? Both teams, same game. We'll explain. Thanks for being here at 6 a.m. Everyone on this Thursday. I'm Eric Connors and I'm not at Iranpour so glad you're with us. The weather has been so nice. Let's check in with meteorologist, Evan Irani to see how long it's going to last and it will last through the weekend and then into next week, temperatures are going to be climbing once again. So very mild out there for today through the upcoming Labor Weekend today and tomorrow are the most mild days before we start to see a gradual climb in temperatures. But that climb is really going to be kicked into high here by Monday. So by Labor Day itself this afternoon, 75 along the coast, 84 for inland valleys, 88 for the mountains and 108 out there for the deserts, plenty of sunshine, but that marine layer is pretty dense. So it'll take another couple of hours to pull back back to you. Thank you very much for that. And now this morning, we are learning more about that double fatal crash in Claremont Mesa, the driver who collided with two San Diego police officers killing one of them has been identified. CBS, Regina Yit is live near the site of the crash with what we are learning about the driver and where that memorial is growing behind you there. Regina. Yeah, that's correct. Loved ones have actually created a little memorial here on the 5200 block of clear on Mesa. We do know that's where the incident happened. I walked over there to see what loved ones have dropped off. We've seen flowers, candles, certain notes with emotional letters as well as a picture of a police badge and American flags. But this morning, we now know the name of that driver. He has been identified as 60 year old Edgar. Investigators say Oviedo lived in San Diego, he was driving the BMW that officers tried to pull over for speeding on Monday night, they say failed to stop which led to a speed chase. A supervisor had called off the pursuit because of the excessive speed of was going at. But then O BMW slammed into a patrol car. 30 year old officer Austin Maar was the one driving the SUV at the time. A and Oviedo both died that night. Partner was also in the passenger seat during the crash. He has 27 year old Zachary Martinez. He's currently at sharp memorials intensive care unit and he's in critical but stable condition. Zachary is a Texas native. He was a navy reservist and trained as an, his military service brought him here to San Diego where he joined the police department a year and a half ago, Austin was a 5.5 year veteran on the force. He worked in the city's Northern Division, had an infectious smile. Atletic had a passion for training and serving following in the footsteps of his dad. We actually talked to San Diego Police Officers Association. They talk a little bit more about Austin. Take a listen. Father was a retired, is a retired deputy sheriff. And so um he dedicated his life to public service and we will not forget that. And the PO A is a raising funds to help the families of the two officers navigate through this tragic incident that they are trying to raise about $250,000. We actually have a link on our website. If you want to check that out. You can head to CBS a.com and click on this story. That's latest here in court Mesa. I set up to you, Regina. Thank you. Former Chula Vista Councilwoman Andrea Cardenas has been sentenced to two years of probation. She pleaded guilty to two counts of grand theft admitting she lied to obtain thousands of dollars of pandemic relief funds and unemployment benefits. Her brother who also took part in the scheme received a similar sentence we heard from Cardenas for the first time in the courtroom. I have received a lot of emails um threats on social media. Um I've been screamed out on the street in front of my house um and pull that word come to my house. Um and I've been subjected to vital language that I have never experienced. I don't consider myself a victim. And um I I know that this is not pretty standard in politics. Meanwhile, the state's fair political practices commission is investigating a political political action committee tied to the Cardenas siblings. This morning. County health officials are warning about 1/4 case of measles in San Diego. This year. Officials say the 13 month old recently traveled overseas and was not vaccinated. The infant may have exposed others. Some information on your screen here. The locations and dates measles very contagious as you know, symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a red rash. Well, kids are back in school and summer is coming to an end but there is still one more reason for people to hit the road and travel. Yes. Labor Day weekend. Yeah, it's coming soon. In fact, probably starting today. CBS Eight's Chris Row Live and Courtney Mesa with all we need to know if you are leaving town this weekend. Chris. Yeah. What can we expect here? Good morning. That now, look, we're not trying to throw any shade to any businesses, but just so that, you know, the gas prices of course, aren't always going to reflect the average that you're seeing in the county. So best to avoid the ones that are going to be about 20 to 25 cents above the county average. Like the shell that is here on Claremont in convoy. Try to find those that are going to be at average or cheap. So, speaking of the average gas price for a gallon of regular right now in the county, what we are looking at is just under $4.70. So that is going to be the average throughout the county. Of course, that does not mean that every time you go to a gas station, you are going to find that gas price. In fact, you might find some in your area that are a lot more expensive and you may just have to swallow that. But of course, what you do is you do try to find the best deal if you have to fill up before you head out of town and look, a lot of people are expected to be traveling, especially by road for this Labor Day weekend. It's one of those long weekends, but it is going to be shorter compared to maybe one of those traditional fall holiday breaks like Thanksgiving or Christmas. And AAA says that there are a number of things that you can do to prepare for a travel time like this that includes making sure that your car is completely checked out. You don't want those price check, engine lights to come on or maybe know that are find out after the fact that your tire pressure was too low. So that's something that you can do to try to avoid having to call AAA to come out to serve to go ahead and service you when you're on the side of a freeway or so so forth. Of the other thing too is to try to find out when the best times to drive are, for instance, today. Yes, today is going to be one of the best times to drive as long as you do. So before 11 a.m. So what that means for those of us who are going to continue to work Thursday and Friday, it means that yeah, we're probably going to be sitting in traffic on our commute home. However, again, it's going to be different depending on where you live, place by place and so forth. We apologize. There was an audio issue there. Uh We also want to talk about air travel yet. Ts A expected to screen a record breaking 17 million people through September 4th. If you are flying out of the San Diego International Airport terminal, one parking has finally reopened. Rates are set at $38 per day. Today, local lawmakers will tour the South Bay International Wastewater Treatment plant. Congress members, Juan Vargas, Scott Peters and Sarah Jacobs will be joined by the Deputy Secretary of State to talk about repairs for the plant to ease the sewage crisis. This comes after the International boundary and water Commission known as the BWC said there's been an increase of sewage flow in the Tijuana River from Mexico. Lawmakers wrote a letter to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and the US ambassador to Mexico about their concerns. The IW BC believes the sewage is coming from a construction project in Tijuana. But Mexico has not confirmed anything. You get to be outside here if you like yesterday, I think you're gonna like today here right now, maybe even a little bit cooler, a little bit cooler today. And tomorrow are the standout, coolest days of the week and then we will see a warm up going into the weekend and early next week. So for now, we're enjoying this mild stretch out there. Mid seventies along the coastline, mid eighties, inland mountains are still going for the upper eighties and then 108 out there. For the deserts marine layer has more depth to it this morning than it has for virtually any morning prior to today so far in the last couple of weeks. So we have dealt with a kind of resurgence of that marine layer. But today, it's extending all the way to the western slopes of the mountains. Overcast. Skies are the name of the game along the coast and inland sunrise, they not coming for another about 15 minutes or so. 622 and then sunset is going to be at 716. So losing day length slowly and you know, the cloud cover doesn't help and that we don't see much of the sun rise because of, uh, those clouds out there. Talk about your temperatures out the door right now. A little bit mild. You could easily open up the windows and let in some of the cooler air before the afternoon. Highs come about 67 in Oceanside right now. 65 in Encinitas, 59 in Ramona, much more mild than what we see in, say downtown San Diego at 70 degrees as we head through this, uh, this morning stretch. Uh, 63 in El Cajon right now Mountain Una. It's pretty nice at 57 in Campo at 53. Unsurprisingly, Breo Springs hottest spot in the county right now. 73. They will also be the hottest spot by the afternoon. So let's talk about some of your headlines as we head through the next couple of days, we've got the deep marine layer with us, bringing some AM clouds PM sun though, still very much expected blue skies out there, cooler temperatures today and tomorrow more mild below normal before we start to see that gradual climb. And then into next week, we'll really see that kicked into high Gear Labor Day and beyond Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, those temperatures look to just keep climbing. So that's gonna be early next week that we're watching for, in particular, for those hotter temperatures. Let's take a look at how uh the roads are out there. 610 right now. So far it is uh pretty quiet out there. We've got a stalled vehicle that's causing some delays mid span on the Coronado Bridge might uh throw a couple extra minutes into the morning commute. If you are trying to make your way across the Coronado Bridge, expect that to lead to some difficulty road weather index. Also indicating that there is some fog to reduce your speeds. If you're not able to see too far in front of you. Looking at border, wait times outside 100 and 30 minute, wait for the San Inio port of entry O time, Mesa port of entry going to take about 75 minutes. So it'll be about double the time or at least over an hour or so of additional time that you'll need at the San Eido port of entry versus the OTA Mesa port of entry back to you.
