Coan Defends Title Won in Rio! 🔥| Women's 400m Freestyle - S7 Final | Tokyo 2020 Paralympics

Originally born in Milan. The final: >> The first event of the year where are Japan fancy a medal. It's looking to be Giulia Terzi is going out hard, maybe going for a push for a bit of a scare on McKenzie Coan's reign. >> At this point what McKenzie Coan has to do is not panic. You have eight lengths of the pool. It's the distance race in Paralympic swimming. McKenzie Coan has not to get too worried if someone goes out and takes the early leas, but at this point Terzi is looking strong. >> McKenzie Coan made such a splash on her Paralympic Games in Rio. She smashed the 50 freestyle, winning gold. Then she went on to stand on top of the podium for the one and 400. She claimed the unique treble. She went on to win a relay silver as well. What an impressive Paralympic Games debut! >> You see Terzi, she doesn't really get much off the wall. She does have the height, though, over McKenzie Coan. McKenzie Coan has this powerful stroke each time. She appears to be pull up a little bit on Terzi. We'll see who is touching first at the end of the 150. >> It's going to be interesting to see how these two battle against one another here, because McKenzie Coan is the class act. We know she's got the back end speed and the ability to finish strongest. With know she has the ability to time her splits perfectly. She's very much somebody who uses technological. It's a big part of her training. She measures everything from the length of her straight to the distance gained per stroke - the length of her stroke. To break-out and turn times. She's somebody who is so aware of what she's doing at any given point in the pool. Terzi, however, seems to be going on feel and definitely not losing any pace. The battle for bronze looks to be Julia Gaffney who had that break-out in the world championships in 2019. Where she picked up gold in the 200IM. In bronze medal position but still watched carefully by the Canadian, and going in six, Lettenberger of USA. >> McKenzie Coan, Terzi turned first but McKenzie Coan now - you really start to see her starting to pull up right now. We talked about how she's so aware of her body position. She's also -- during Covid she's one of the swimmers who talked about she transformed her garage into a pool so she could train. She didn't want to lose anything, because feel for her is so important in the water. >> There are very interesting videos on social media she posted, keeping her followers up to date with what she was doing and how she was doing. This is turning out to be an intense ballots between these two at the front. Terzi is the ambitious youngster looking to upset McKenzie Coan who won the freestyle treble at the Rio Games. At the 250 they're neck and neck, separated by very little. Julia Gaffney looking good for the bronze medal but there's a good swim from Lettenberger who looks to be pulling closer. It's Duchesne of Canada who is fading now, as she swims in her first Paralympic Games final. Lettenberger is making up a bit of ground here on Gaffney. But the United States, three of their swimmers in the top four, so looking food for medal placings here. McKenzie Coan, going with the tumble turn, Terzi slides the body around and turns in the opposite direction. >> Right here in the last 100 McKenzie Coan should be strong. We know she's a sprinter, she has that speed at the end. Although Terzi, she is really hanging in there and giving McKenzie Coan a run for her money right now. McKenzie Coan, she's trying to extend her lead. You see how wide her arm span is as she continues to pull more and trying to pull away. Here come her legs, she's really turning them on at the end. >> This is really turning into being a promising battles for two hopefuls for the gold medal. Terzi looking to challenge for the gold medal but being undone by a multiple champion, a multiple Paralympian gold medallist in McKenzie Coan. Now, McKenzie Coan who looked to turn and stay in front is having a bit of a battle on her hands because Terzi is threatening to come back at the 25 metre mark. It's Gaffney of the United States who has pushed ahead after the turn at 350 to put herself in bronze medal position and come home to give herself some consolation and compensation after missing oint IM gold. It's McKenzie Coan who is coming in to claim the gold medal and touches ahead of Terzi who claims another silver. McKenzie Coan successfully defends the title she won at Rio 2016. Julia Gaffney does indeed touch the fastest to claim the bronze as the United States pick up silver and -- gold and bronze with Terzi the silver. Upsetting the potential of an all-American podium. Julia Gaffney and McKenzie Coan embrace. >> Julia has to be happy with that performance, especially after the 200 individual medley which was her favourite event. Now to get on the podium in the 400 freestyle, she has to be very happy with that performance. Somellera touches in now. For McKenzie Coan, it is another golden delight. Terzi, hoping to help anyone with impairment in Italy in years ago. She has a Masters degree in legal theory. McKenzie Coan, incidentally, wants to go into law after her swimming career. McKenzie Coan, an incredible swim and a brilliant champion. >> This was a great race in the 400 freestyle, it was a battle between Terzi and Coan the whole way through. Terzi went out with that early lead and she continued - she really held the lead. I think it was until the 300 mark. McKenzie Coan turned ahead of Terzi to take the lead. Tried to extend it in the 350, but on the way home, it was like in the last 25 metres, coming into the wall, Terzi, she started to pull back on McKenzie Coan and she moved up a little bit. She was just at her shoulders. Then McKenzie Coan dove for the wall and she has to be happy with her time. Jackie Freney's world record is still safe, for maybe another three years, but McKenzie Coan will fight for it. >> Somebody who has been in the water for 20 years. Her swimming career started with aqua therapy when she was five years old. McKenzie Coan a champion for the fourth time.
