Docs: Man called 911 after starting Kzoo fire

TONIGHT, COURT DOCUMENTS ARE SHOWING WHAT LED UP TO THE ARREST OF A MAN POLICE SAY IS BEHIND SEVERAL DIFFERENT FIRES AROUND KALAMAZOO. >> INVESTIGATORS SAY THAT HE STUCK AROUND TO WATCH THE BUILDINGS BURN AND EVEN CALLED 911 FOR ONE OF THEM. NEWS EIGHT'S JOSH SANCHEZ HAS MORE ON THE ARREST AS WELL AS WHAT AN EXPERT SAYS IS GENERALLY BEHIND THESE ACTIONS. JOSH. >> GOOD EVENING, BRIAN AMBER, ACCORDING TO THESE DOCUMENTS, POLICE ARRESTED 32 YEAR-OLD GEORGE STANDER LAST WEEK THURSDAY FOLLOWING 2 SEPARATE FIRES. LESS THAN A MILE FROM EACH OTHER. LAST TUESDAY. KALAMAZOO FIRE CREWS BATTLED AN EARLY MORNING BLAZE THAT BURNED THROUGH A VACANT BUILDING AT 3.16 EAST WATER STREET. ACCORDING COURT DOCUMENTS, THE PHONE NUMBER OF THE CALLER WHO REPORTED THE FIRE TO DISPATCH JUST RESPECTED 32 YEAR-OLD GEORGE STANDARD. INVESTIGATORS WOULD LATER IDENTIFY STANDARD IN SECURITY CAMERA VIDEO NEAR THE START OF ANOTHER FIRE ON 5.63 PORTAGE STREET BEFORE HE WALKED INTO THE ON THE ROX STORE UPS FIRE MARSHAL SCOTT BROOKS SAYS THE ARREST IS A BIG STEP. THE INVESTIGATION WITH DECADES OF EXPERIENCE. HE SAYS FIRES IN VACANT BUILDINGS HAVE THEIR RISKS. WE DON'T TRULY KNOW WHAT'S INSIDE THAT. WE DON'T KNOW THE REASON WHY IT'S BACON. WE DON'T KNOW WHY IT'S ABANDONED. >> IF IT'S HOUSE THAT SOMEONE'S LIVING IN. USUALLY WE KNOW EITHER. IT'S A LIVABLE SPACE AND THERE'S WAYS THAT WE CAN MANIPULATE OUR WAY CLEAR SLEEP OR DAMAGED OR DESTROYED BY FIRE A STANDARD WAS CHARGED WITH 8 1ST RELATED COUNTS FOR ALLEGEDLY STARTING SEVERAL DIFFERENT FIRES AROUND KALAMAZOO, BOSTON COLLEGE PROFESSOR VICTOR PETRA. >> HAS A BACKGROUND IN FORENSIC PSYCHIATRY AND SAYS PEOPLE INVOLVED WITH ARSON ARE USUALLY YOUNG MEN VERY OFTEN. ASSOCIATION BETWEEN EATING SEARS MENTAL ILLNESS AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE OF THE HALL USE. THAT'S VERY COMMON TO SEE HIM ON FOLKS WHO CALL ME. >> BECAUSE AS ARSON OFFENDERS ARE NOT ALL THAT COMMON. HE SAYS AN EVALUATION CAN HELP FIND THE ROOT CAUSE FOR THE INDIVIDUAL STARTING THE FIRES WHICH CAN VARY FROM MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES TO BEHAVIORAL ONES. GIVES YOU A LOT OF IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO COME WITH A PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION TO WHAT BEHIND THE BEHAVIOR BECAUSE THE VERSAILLES BEHAVIOR CAN HAVE SO MANY DIFFERENT GROUPS. >> AND THEY CAN FIND WHAT THAT IS. >> FIRE.
