all right let's bring in our guest who better to help us kick off the season than my beloved Dallas Cowboys all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns his stats as a Dallas Maverick not nearly as impressive I don't know what happened there NFL on CBS lead analyst and one of my top five favorite quarterbacks I've ever shared a churro with at an Elton John concert you don't believe me there it is right there that's the picture that's my quarterback Tony Romo what's happening pal I forgot about the churos and the Elton John concert but I can tell you that uh it's an honor to be on S so thank you for having me I've been asking for years and finally you actually allowed me to be on so I appreciate it I know it is I know it is we you know what we ran stuff with test markets and everything and finally finally they said yeah you could have Romo on it makes sense but I want to talk to you I um thank you I pulled you off the golf course I know you just golfed for like 90 straight days or something crazy so I don't even know if you're aware of what's going on in the NFL are you doing research I've actually done a lot of research actually I think one of the big cool things has been the rookie quarterbacks a little bit this year I don't know if you've seen but they uh have some ability and I think you know the better quarterbacks you get in the NFL you know the parody and everything comes back together so I'm excited to see these young guys play let's go let's talk about it Caleb Williams I think there's uh a lot to be expected of this guy if you look at like odds and stuff I know you never do but he's expected to win nine games this year for the Bears I don't remember a bear or any quarterback really with that expected to make the playoffs potentially in their first year it's too much asking too much of a a rookie I just feel like anytime a rookie in the preseason plays well as a quarterback especially a high draft pick and number one overall expectations everything gets ramped up so I think you gotta always you know temper you know the expectations of these kids because most of the time defenses are playing Zone def defense and in pressure situations and you know as the game gets closer or tighter there's going to be a lot of man and there's going to be a lot of hidden coverages and you know blitzes that they haven't seen but I think Caleb Williams probably has to me at least as good a fundamentals coming into the NFL as any quarterback I've seen in other words his footwork his just drop the way he uses his Leverage into his drop is as good as you're going to find like it's a teaching tape for young quarterbacks and I think that gives them a chance to succeed um however there's a lot more I got to see to say we're going to the playoffs and we're going to be this type of team it's it's a very uh difficult League when it comes to adjustments and your ability without having all that knowledge so it's it's going to take time for him he's going to struggle from time to time but he's going to also be great from time to time I mean I'm I'm excited for these guys because they have the ability like these four or five guys to improve and to become you know a franchise Tech quarterback and that's exciting if I'm a fan of the Bears you know Vikings Redskins all these other teams V Next the same way they changed it to commanders by the way maybe you didn't get you know not many people know that's all right uh speaking of though Jaden Daniels that's my guy for offensive Rook of the year I think he could have like an RG3 type season where everybody by the end of the year is like why is he running so much get out of bounds my God it's great he's putting up so many yards but I think he's going to be a flashy Dynamic player and uh and lead Washington to close to a playoff bir I agree with you I think that his ability to sense and feel I call it like spatial awareness so like Lamar Jackson when he first got in the NFL you watch the tap way it's like he didn't know football yet right he didn't know where your eyes should start and really the key playing the quarterback position is because of this or that or tape study your eyes start here and then you go one two three four maybe or five or one two three someone's around me you got to run but your ability to recognize where to start with your eyes if you start in the wrong spot all of a sudden you go one 4 3 1 5 and you're all over the place so I think the key for him is just the you know the system the offensive system office coordinator their ability to keep it to where he knows what you know he knows and sometimes that's just calling the plays that he ran in college so he can go boom boom boom boom and if it's covered he has the ability to use you know his athleticism and people talk about that as sometimes negative you gotta play from the pocket and that's just not true I mean these guys can all use their legs use their athleticism and that's a GameChanger because as soon as a defensive coordinator has to adjust to that it's like an extra guy it's 11 on 11 but technically the quarterback can't catch the ball offensive linan can't catch a ball but you have 11 guys on the other side four rush you have seven guys on five and so when you got to take an extra guy in account for the quarterback now it's six on five so I think that uh using their leg is a good thing and I think you'll see that this year I think Jaden's going to have a great year and a great career all right I assume you know what you're talking about with this quarterbacks sometimes I do I do want to talk about a wide receiver who was in the news CD lamb um a lot of noise about the Cowboys not signing him all off season and then it gets done it's four for 136 million I was never worried were you I feel like Jerry kind of knows what he's doing what if CD gets hurt in like a parasailing acent in the middle of August you might as well wait and then get him in Camp for a couple weeks of course but the timing I think was kind of perfect don't you uh you're not wrong from my perspective I think um people get worried you remember Zack Martin last year sure yeah he held out they went through the whole thing and then they signed him you know a week or two before the season one of the big worries for organizations coaches in general is you know when you're at training camp you are pushing your body you're pushing the envelope I guess you could say and you're trying to improve and you no matter how hard you work you really don't get those reps and then there's game reps and people talk about that but teams aren't playing most of their best players in the preseason in general but I think you know this is a guess I'm not saying that I know because I don't but I think Jerry Stephen Jerry Jr the JN family I think they're okay with some of their best players waiting till the end of training camp so that there's no chance of injury and uh there might be an intelligence there you know that other people don't really um fully understand because when you're in training camp practicing that many times out like injuries happen and it could be soft tissue it could be anything right we're not talking about season ending all the time but even a hamstring can really affect you and sometimes you say well if you're in training camp then you won't have those things well yes and no the more you put on something the more chance it has you know to break I guess you could say or get hurt but I think they know what they're doing is what I'm saying I'll do you one better what if it's uh CD lamb side maybe it's his agent saying hey don't come to us with a serious offer until the third week in August our guy doesn't really want to take chances and Camp I don't think that's how they I I mean I appreciate the uh the Monday morning quarterbacking aspect of it but I I don't think that's listen a deal like that you'll take whenever they give it to you and I think that when it comes you take it gotcha okay listen you named your son Jones after Jerry I think right unless it was Pac-Man it was after Jerry Jerry definitely I mean it was like me and my wife we've talked to Jerry and The Jones Family you gotta remember they're like family to us like Jerry and Jean have been there for me as a kid basically supporting you know this third string quarterback when I remember he actually talked to me right because maybe I flashed some ability or something but he's the thing that people don't understand about Jerry is they always think he's too involved and he's too however you want to describe it like calling plays almost it's completely not accurate he supports the players like no owner you know that I know there's only a few owners in the NFL that I think truly have the best interest of the team and the players and the coaches and they just want to win that is Jerry that is Stephen and Jerry Jr and I I'm very lucky that I was a part of that I'm telling you he does not come in there and say hey coach you need to do more of this and blah blah blah he trusts his coaches he trusts the players he is a supportive person who wants the best for you and I think once you're around it you see that very quickly and he really dies with each loss with you wow all right so that's nice and everything but you named your son after like I named my son after you jack Romo so I figured you'd return the favor I did it to inspire you whatever but so then you turn around and name your son after Jerry Jones do you think CD lamb should be obligated to do the same when he has a kid well I was either going with cousin cell I was going with Jones it was a tough call but we stuck with Jones at the end right but it was uh no you're exactly right how's Jack doing by the way I love he's doing good he's a Steelers fan so you don't realize I follow Jack more than you know believe me I'm like Jack's my guy guys look at him he's a all right I want to talk about color commentating uh I hate to say it but you're one of the best to ever do it thank you and yet there's always criticism you're too excited you're having too much fun you're calling the plays before they happen it's ridiculous and I have a theory I think color commentating is the sports profession most people are jealous of and actually think they can do because a lot of sports fans when they were growing up recorded themselves playing you know watching games or just what you know and I think a lot of people think they could do it and for that reason you're GNA receive an avalanche of criticism that you don't deserve well I think it just goes with the territory when I say that it's like you know we've had these discussions before and I think the one thing people have to understand is when you look at the criticism it's really Twitter and then that goes into writing articles right when we were young I told the story multiple times but I can remember when I first started playing and I was a backup third string trying to make the team for the Cowboys uh they had this thing called newspapers it was a really cool thing where you could actually get it in the morning and you would open it up and it would be like articles of things that people wrote and when they did that you'd go read and if you play good in the preseason game in your first or second year you'd be like oh my gosh I want to read about it so excited and then they'd have this little section that said comments where they would let people actually write in to the newspaper and uh say whatever and I remember somebody said well Tony Romo was like AR angle too low is the ball he can't be a great quarterback throwing it from here and because I was a little insecure with the same thought I was like that guy's right H so the next day I went out to practice and I tried raising my arm up higher and all these things and it taught me a great lesson because a couple days later I was like well I'm not throwing it as good and eventually you know you perfect your craft and you get better at things and so the arm just becomes a slot in where it is but there's great players throwing it from down here good players here there's guys up here there's Payton man I mean it just you can throw it from wherever Ball's got to go to where it's got to go and you got to do it on time and see the whole thing but that's the world we're kind of in is that it's far easier to see that comment now than it was back then um but wasn't it silly that that would affect somebody like your quarterback coach or your coach should tell you about that not some random person and you know you get like a a turtle back almost in some ways once you played in the NFL where it's like things can kind of be tlon where it just hits you and rolls right off now but it doesn't mean it doesn't affect the people around you or people that you're with and so you'll hear about things and so when you talk about the criticism I say well if you're on Twitter and you're basing it on that you know it's not unwarranted maybe I should do those things maybe they're right in some ways well that's my job to I want to do the best job for this game that you enjoy it the most most you possibly can so s you like the Cowboys so it's like if you're watching a Cowboy game you want to learn something about the Cowboys I feel like you want to enjoy the experience and if I'm making it not enjoyable it's like well that's on me I should do a better job with that so that's my job to go so you're saying bring it on you say bring on the criticism you you want more in fact no I think I think the biggest thing is that people don't understand that I don't think the criticism is as strong as what people might describe the better you are at what you do there's going to be more people talk about you and so that comes from both sides but right uh I also think you know not to talk too long on this like I already have but um if I went out there on TV I was like hey does anybody like me anymore is an announcer can you please tweet about it or say something I think you'd get flooded pretty quickly and just from the people that come up to you constantly daily which is a gift that I'm fortunate enough to have that and I I I don't think if you were tweeting saying Romo a great announcer he's a great analyst yeah are you going to do that every week no but you might say he sucks he sucks he's terrible blah blah blah it's easier it's easier and so it's just one of those things where people who really like you they don't need to do that over and over again maybe one week I'll I'll send it out there and we'll get people to see if they like you know what's funny when my cousin Jimmy was picking games for a fox uh you know 25 years ago whatever he could good was he really good at well he wasn't good because I was giving him the picks but yeah uh but anyway he it was such such turmoil between him and Terry Bradshaw and everyone's friends now so I could say this and him and how long and everything one point there was one week I think it was like four weeks in they put it up to a vote does Jimmy stay or does Jimmy go his actual job was on the line and you are you joking behind the scen or on TV no no they had a 1 1800 they had something because it wasn't texting back then so I don't know I think it was like a 1 1800 number you could call to register your vote and of course we put in like a thous votes for Jimmy but he won he got to keep his job luckily I think he and that was like a real thing that actually yeah imagine that that kind of management they're like okay we're gonna leave it up to the fans and the side that seems insane but honestly that that's the world we're in and that's a good thing in my opinion the fans are the people who literally decide and should because it's like if they don't like you or you're not that's we're not playing sports trying to win we're trying to make the experience better for the viewer and if more people like you you're winning I guess you could say because we don't have a scoreboard that's crazy though that Jimmy went through that you fall back on just doing you know Johnny Carson's Ro wow yeah I know and he's hosting the Oscars what so he should multiple times I actually remember a time where we were talking about that together you do yeah yeah I remember you and advised them against it I think you were sitting there being like hey that's a dumb joke jimy I let's go with this route he's like S I wouldn't be here without without you just ride there you go that's exactly right now I remember that real quick back to the commentating I want to talk about predicting plays in general I don't know if you were told to slow down or if you were ever told anything but do you have it in your head where it's like okay I predicted the last three plays in about 10 minutes I know what's coming here but I'm GNA lay off here because it just uh it's just it's rubbing it in at some point or you're just like if I feel it I'm going to let it go you have an internal clock yeah I mean there's a lot to that I feel like like I know I I love when I hit on a good question but go ahead yeah you don't have to answer it it still goes back to the fan and the viewer like my goal is to just make it as enjoyable as humanly possible you know for the people watching and if that's what they want I'll give that to them you know but you also don't want to come across you know the wrong like I support so many teams on people are like well I'm sorry like they'll come up and be like hey can I get a picture I'm sorry I'm a Giants fan or Redskins or Eagles or whoever right everyone thinks you hate their team there's no way around it well the funny part is like I'm and I tell them I'm like I actually love your team like I I now love so many teams because once you get to meet you know the owner the coaches the players you start to like root for them like I root for people who care try hard and give everything exhaust themselves in the pursuit you know in the goal of winning and trying to win a championship and for the people that I run into you know through all the interviews and just communication aspect of what our job is I start to like have an affinity to root for and so that that is true that I'm like come on like this is dumb don't do that like start going this route and do more the and then you like because I like the person and once I start to like the person I like the team so there's so many teams now that I root for it's it's insane there is you know like it's not just one two it's like there's a lot of teams I mean yeah you could almost argue it's 32 it's not quite there yet but there is friends all over the place it is and I want them to have success and I know how important it is to the family to the people who are playing in in the NFL you have Tom Brady coming on he's going to be calling games this year unless he unretires again who knows maybe by the time this interiew ends it'll happen he could definitely un he'd still probably be right at the top until he's he still could be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL I believe that did you talk to him about this did you impart any wisdom of color you have yeah and did you tell a lot of these things you just said to me well I think that's what makes Tom great at anything he does it's like you know you're coming into a new Arena and you're want to have I don't want to say the best advice but you want to get the best um chance for Success when you start off and so I mean we've talked a lot of times and that's his gift he wants to be great and I'm rooting for him and I'm help like I'm I'm trying to do anything I can to help that process along for him but that's what you have to do when you come into this it's kind of like okay we hired you here we go and I started like a training camp deal thing CBS and me together and because initially it was like okay you're GNA do the game and I was like okay so what's like the offseason or the training camp and it was kind of there wasn't a script for that and I was like well usually if you want to be good at something we should do it more than just when it's you know on air or live like it'd be like into a football game I'm like so I created like this training camp style thing so I just told them all that stuff and then some of the other things but for for young commentators anybody coming on I think um learning what other people have done is a huge part of it I mean I called Chris Collinsworth Troy Aman I called everybody you know and just trying to get advice the same way so that I could be ahead of the curve and that all that knowledge you know helped a ton and I think it's the same thing you know for Tom because it's just a new Arena and you want to be prepared as if you played for years because otherwise it's just brand new and then you'll learn each week and the idea is to have already done a season before you show up I remember my cousin Jimmy and I visited you in Dallas you were training for your first year as color commentator and I recommended that you play Madden and see you know call the plays as you're as you're going and uh you thought that was a great idea you had me do you actually have that's not fake he's actually telling the truth he was in town yeah that's true I never lie yeah and uh except that it ended up just being me and Jimmy watching you play Madden for like four and a half hours beating like 13 year old boys 62 to three or something so those days were so much fun back before my kids grew up I was like I got to play video games could you imagine now if I got to actually sit down and play Madden for an hour that would be uh do you play the college game did did you did you get the college game we did we were uh this summer my boys so I got three boys 12 10 and now seven so we got Hawkins rivers and Jones and they're all into sports times 10 which makes it really fun it's WrestleMania 3 here every night but uh they are the ones who kind of teach me now because they're playing these games and my job is to come and be like what is cover three it is three guys in a Zone D so I get to teach it's a great you know learn learning you know uh it's a teaching tape in some ways that I don't think kids realize when they're playing video games I'm like heab they're allowed to play longer it's the same thing as me getting on a whiteboard teaching them if I can do it correctly but uh yeah it's been it's been a blast raising him and going through this yeah this is school this class might go to midnight but so be it this is just how yeah exactly wife will cut it off and be like no and I'm like they're learning she's like they're not learning anything this is for you I'm like n she got me there time for B all right we're here with arguably the third best quarterback ever to come out of Eastern Illinois Tony Romo would you do you think that's fair Tony that's pretty funny the funny part pton yeah the the funny part about that is we just did an Eastern Illinois reunion for the first time with what people don't may not know is that EAS Illinois is the Harvard of U the NFL when it comes to football I don't know what I just said there but just listen it'll make sense Mike Shanahan came from there SE pton came from there Jimmy garoo came from there Mike Heimerdinger I mean there's a ton of coaches and people who have went to East Illinois and it's not USC it's not Alabama but weirdly this like one school has a bunch of great you know Legends not myself included these guys are way above me but uh it's just a great it's a football Factory without people Netflix should Netflix should do a QB special on Eastern Illinois is what you're saying I think we did we did the reunion and the funny thing is they said and the third best quarterback Sean said that pton said that in front of everyone so when you said it I was like did Sean call did he tell you the same because Sean set the records I beat his some of them and then Jimmy beat mine so it was funny all right but then you went on to only one of you went on to be the Cowboys leader career touchdowns and passing yards and let me ask you this is Cowboys quarterback the most criticized position in all of sports all of sports yes and no I think yes in some ways because picture this and I think I finally realized it later in my career but if you throw an interception to lose a game and it's at noon you know or one o'clock Eastern and there's 10 other games on and you're playing for a different franchise you might see that locally but it's not national news per se right but because the Cowboys are usually on National windows that and the number of fans who watch it because they do Drive the numbers more than any team over the last you know a long time decades six Prime Time games almost every year yeah yes but even deeper than that like in some ways even their games are going to be shown on the highlights more every time because it drives like click it's like if you write a disparaging article about you know a mid-level golfer in the PJ tour it's one thing you write about Tiger Woods it's a whole another thing you get clicks so it's the same thing for uh networks or anything if you show this and show tiger messing up flubbing a chip that's huge news well there was seven other guys in the PJ tour you know who bladed it or fatted that chip and so it's like but that doesn't really register with the clicks or with the eyeballs so to me the Cowboys bring that value which helps the NFL it helps everybody and helps the player too in a lot of ways you know in their life if used correctly um but at the same time when you say is it the most what' you call it the most criticized criticized I would also argue no because the best players go through that equally so uh Jordan Patrick Mahomes Kobe Bryant Shaq I mean all the best players in history at any sport Tom Brady pton Manning it's just they're going to be criticized and looked at the same way because the eyeballs are on them and so therefore anything will be scrutinized at another level and so it's either if you're just middle of the pack and you play for the Cowboys you'll feel the way to that more than other teams would same as the best players will regardless of where they play okay I don't like answers questions that have two answers but whatever that's fine I'll let you get with that have you ever seen I won because I'm not wrong I got you win exactly you're running for office uh have you ever seen the movie Blood Diamond I have not in many years Leonardo DiCaprio right right let me just tell you something about blood diamond I don't mean to bring up you know black hole past stories but it's the first movie I cried at probably since I was a kid and I watched Jaws and I was terrified but let me give you some background here okay it's January 6 2007 Cowboys Seahawks playoffs I know I think you know where this is going you're the quarterback and the holder so glad you're bringing this up a lot I know well listen this hurts me more than it hurts you and I got I have to I doubt it I it's therapy whatever there's a shiny like like a like a crystal chandelier that ball was like sh there was something wrong with that ball you mishandled the snap you still have it you're going to run it in it's a it's a it's a basically an extra point length field goal the old extra point Martin grammatica doesn't even have to throw a block just has to get in away if he if he blows on the defender you're in the end zone but no you're caught from behind anyway Cowboys lose the playoff game I say to my wife Melissa who you know I say we have to get out of here we have to go see a movie or something so we see the 950 showing of blood diamond and I am balling like a like a seven-year-old girl the whole movie and it had very little to do with Leo or Jennifer Conley's acting ability so I just um I don't even know why I told that story I had to get that out of years old yes I'm crying at this movie yeah you call you didn't cry when you watched Blood Diamond did you no but I am gonna cry tonight after hearing this part because you're not wrong I think U yeah there are moments in your career that you they just they're big and you know that was the first year I started and you know I was still holding at that time and back then they changed the rule after that because the home team got to throw in a ball and obviously you know it's a very new ball that U hasn't been worked in a ton and that's smart on their team on their part but the fact you let down your team and uh lose something like that that that carries with you the rest of your life all right well listen there's moments like that that I always love talking about not at all but I can tell you right now that they never go away it's uh those are those are hard things to talk about sometimes I know you let down and you want to be the guy who has the ball in your hand and gives your team a chance to win you've always proud yourself on that and then when you let it I sobbed in front of a theater full of two like 150 people so I you know believe me I don't like talking about it either but Silver Lining you created a job they talk about politicians creating a job after that like you said the quarterback was no longer a holder the holder was the holder right so con congratulations yeah yeah that was that was the other part too it's like you you're not playing and you're practicing holding all the time and then you start playing quarterback and still pract like I still had to hold practice and do everything but you look back I mean that's part of what you're saying it's like what could I have I done leading up to that to be more prepared and so it's just those are tough ones they all right they're tough I didn't mean to bring it down I just want to tell yeah you definitely brought me down I appreciate that okay listen let's talk about this because this you're gonna see a lot of the great quarterbacks this year now MVP has gone to the number one seed it's gone to a quarterback who's on a team that's the number one seed the each of the last seven years first of well do you think that's right every year there's talk well why can't mcaffrey win why can't Tyreek kill win or should this just be a quarterback award at this point uh I kind of agree with you like in some ways I'm like I picture it more from a defensive coordinator perspective so when I'm getting ready to go against the team this week you put the tape on you're like okay how can we lose and what can we do to disrupt this offense you know what's worked we watch the tape that's why teams who can adjust over the season teams are always trying to to find something that gives you trouble with your system with the quarterback with the player so like Tyreek Hill that guy being on the field not that dissimilar from Randy Moss now they're different with the size but you automatically say if Tyreek Hill lines up inside like close to the offensive lineman ding dingding touchdown possibilities very quickly if he lines up outside against our slow corner and we don't have help with a safety touchdown right away number one job for defensive coordinators how do we not give up a touchdown literally like that's the starting point of every call play that they do and how do they create touchdowns what are all their big plays here they are well if Tyreek Hills a part of 50% of them you know like in 2018 or 19 it's like we're going to call our defense to make sure he never has the chance to wreck the game right away well that's an MVP to me you know and it's like this guy can't get the ball all of a time now saying that the quarterback touches the ball on every play he has value that is hard you know to explain to people because if he just decides to get lazy with a play fake and not set it and someone hits them and the ball's fumbled they pick it up and score I mean very different than turning it over in basketball where it's two points takes a long time most of the time to get a touchdown so and there's only eight to 12 possessions a game on average you could say it's like you you could lose or win a game based on a guy holding on to a ball a guy making a decision and so the quarterback always deserves you know the credit in a lot of ways yet we put too much on his plate because he doesn't play defense or special teams at all and yet we say well he's not clutch or he is like well he went down and scored he just never got back on the field I mean technically he won the game but he didn't but I I do think that there are guys that should be in the MVP mix I agree with you yeah okay quarterbacks yeah I'm I'm I am gonna just I'm gonna say they go with the grain here and give it to another number one seed quarterback I'm liking Josh Allen this year I know it's been Mahomes it's been Lamar Jackson you think the bills have what it they just showed me so much having to win the last five games of last season to make the playoffs and they did it and we kind of all knew they were going to do it right and I feel like if he cuts down on interceptions it might be his award to win well I think you're not wrong um he has rare ability to use his legs but he has size and strength with it and then I think he's really gotten better at knowing the game and really the way you think and then you've got to be very very accurate and distribute the ball correctly I think like all young quarterbacks when you're young like you look for the big play every time right like you're always like oh this is gonna be there and then you're late to the next thing then you're late to the next one and then you get to the checkdown and he gets tackled you know it's second and 12 you got a two- yard loss on first down on a running play or something and you're like this corner route's going to be open and you wait on it just a little longer and then you're like oh oh shoot that got there then you go to the next guy and now he's a little covered then you check it down and he gets tackled and it's a four yard gain or three yard gain it's second nine where if you knew the game at such another level you would understand that's gonna be covered on the corner route and then you'd be Bam Bam Bam and that check down gets you nine or 10 and now all of a sudden it's third and two instead of third and nine third and eight and so I think he's developed that and I think he has a really their system on defense is very s they've been top five for many years and I'm not sure what they finished last year but that system I know I've gone against it with Jim Johnson Sean mcder is a great defensive football coach and I think he's a great head coach as well and you know they lost Diggs their top receiver so that's one of those things where you go well is that gonna hurt him a ton or not well the best quarterbacks usually overcome that and I think Josh is going to do the same and I think Diggs is an outstanding receiver but sometimes the distribution of going through that progression and not hanging on that corner route too long because Diggs was running it maybe that could help him so I see your angle there and I I agree with you I think he's gonna be right in the mix all right all right listen Before I Let You Go this has been too long I could tell you're you're antsy to get out of here no I was only antsy after the Seattle questions other than that really happy I didn't want to put it in the outline that's baby faal Sol's problem you did that up good job okay I do have a question for you we call this segment couses [Music] conundrum okay I'm going to ask you a question that you've probably not been asked before and you answer it as best you can all right okay it's not going to hurt all right just a little you have a you ready yeah okay you have either a 4 foot putt to win the 2025 Masters or you have fourth and goal from the four yard line last play of the game your team is down to win the Super Bowl this year let's say for the Cowboys Super Bowl chose not even super you're going Super Bowl it's it's not even close like yeah all right football football's a hair more passionate and I love golf but a thank God I'm glad you answered that okay but here's the uh here's the flip side if you fall short on Fourth and goal from the four your son Jones who you named after Jerry Jones has to have Jerry Jones's hair for the rest of his life Jerry's hair has come back strong you'd love it now if you see it but uh I think I think uh especially with the knowledge I have now I like my chances on Fourth and goal my body I could play a play I'm not sure I could make the drive or the quarter consistently anymore but uh you give me the ball with one play I think I can what's the play tell me the play because now I'm into this I have to hear it what's the play well there's two ways to go about it I think what happen is I think you're going to see this come back a little bit this year or in the coming years because see if I can make this simple for you and Layman because I know you don't know ball at the highest level but pretend like you do but uh there's 11 guys on defense so picture of the game is math leverage and math I call it so if there's 11 guys you rush four of them on average four guys are rushing you got seven Defenders we can only throw the ball to Five Guys well that free safety that's always in the middle of the field right up there so here's the line you put four guys on defense right here that Rush the quarterback now there's three other guys linebackers and you take this safety right up here and you bring him down so now you got four underneath Defenders then you got a corner and a corner so four eight nine 10 there's always a free safety right up here who's always played in the middle or back of the end zone just because that's how they've always done it I think teams have gotten smart and they said well no one can throw over the top of us because you're out of bounds so they brought him down in here and they put Five Guys right here with two corners one there and one over there and so they boxed it in and so what happened is the Chiefs got so good at doing all this stuff going up and then misdirection and then it's the front of the pylon right over here or the front of the pylon here when everything looks like it's going there it's just a little quick guy from The Back Field coming across or something quick out there and they started to just get more people right there and I always said well it's still numbers in math if the safeties don't come down you don't have guys in the Run game if I put all my guys right here big guys we would just run it right here but they put everyone there well then this guy who's sitting outside the wide receiver is one-on-one and so this is where I think you're going to see a lot lot of more like just go up and run a back shoulder Quick Pass behind you because the corner is going to be inside leverage you're going to go up push him and catch it you'll see Aaron Rogers do that with Mike Williams when he gets healthy a bunch this year the League's kind of gone away from that because it's kind of like a tough pass and catch forget Aaron Rogers this is your play You're Going oneon-one CD over the shoulder pylon but you're not throwing you're not throwing a soft little fade where it's like go make the play you literally all you do is you sit there and you practice it and you say that safety comes down here in the Run game we throw the ball there he stays out there in double CD we run the ball they're are guys short it's just numbers we have guys on guys just we need two yards three yards even four yards you technically do but to me on Fourth and four you got to have multiple things that's the thing people don't realize you don't just call a play and be like this play is going to work I'm perfect with the play callor no you have things built in you have two place called and then a third check if the quarterback has knowledge in in the system over years to be like neither one of these are good this is the third and then you go off your film study and be like they run this or this in critical situations then it goes this or this in fourth down critical this or this in fourth in goal situations inside the five so you start to know that before the week you can map that out and then you get your two or three plays where you can go ahead and get to the right one based on what guy who tells you is it the front is it the safety coming down is it the leverage of the nickel Corner whatever it is and that tells you where to go and it gives you the best chance of success but we're not calling one Play here's the play I'd have a lot of plays ready we be prepared before we showed up let me tell I am getting Goosebumps number nine envisioning this and I don't know if it could happen but go I I I pray that fourth and four you have the chance oh that would be so great and God help poor young seven-year-old Jones if it doesn't have he has gray follicles for the rest of his life um if it doesn't but I'm with you what about Jack hair Jack Romo is take the hair on too then if I score get he gets to keep the hair he doesn't get your hair he hasn't taken a hat off in like seven years I don't know he's just like me that's why I love that's right Tony thank you I can't thank you enough for uh returning my text uh first and uh also agreeing to be on the show and agreeing to join us every week at this time on cousin Sal's winning weekend for free I that is uh big breaking news now have for everybody see you next week guys thanks toon I appreciate it thanks you're the best [Music]
