LaNorris Sellers reflects on season opener, talks team chemistry

NIS we talked to you a little after the game but after watching the film how would you judge your performance from Saturday um it wasn't the best I kind of played timit a little bit kind of nervous scared to make a mistake um I just got to go out there and play just be myself how do you develop chemistry with uh your wide receivers especially because coach Beamer said a lot of them will be used each game really just throwing extra as much as we can any chance we get um talking to him and then out there just live reps against the defense is the best thing you can do when the pocket collapsed or Defenders kind of got in your face did you feel like you were your first move or thought in your head was yeah I got to run right here or what was kind of going through your head when those moments came about um probably the game was probably just take off a run but I just need to be St firm in the pocket just be able to take those hits with with some of those things you just said were were those kind of the main coaching points from from DLo that was um so we talked after the game he asked me how I felt I'm usually like self-critic like I criticize myself a lot so as I went through the film I could just tell I wasn't myself I was kind of Jumpy I was kind of fast um going through my reads fast probably skipping some reads here and there but I just need to just be more patient what what were the positives you would say from from what you did um I kept playing really I didn't let's see I kept playing um stay in the game still talked communicated I just didn't was like comfortable I guess you can say Lor first we missed you at the NASCAR race on Sunday yeah and second how do you get you talk about being timid and having to be more patient how do you make yourself do that going forward because it's a quick you know it's a quick turnaround before you guys get up to Kentucky I think it was just the first game thing my first game starting you know 880,000 people um I think that was really just it so I got the first game out the way I think i' be good from now on a couple line were talking about some of the struggles finishing Drive struggles in the Red Zone from your perspective is there anything specific going wrong once you were kind of inside the 20 um I think really just communication and execution was the biggest thing we just need to communicate better execute better um figure those things out the game go on how much was fun was it uh running the ball like you you were because obviously you hadn't been really hit around here in a while how how nice was it to be able to uh it was fun um probably I take so many hits you would say but other than that like I it felt fine to me I was good where do you feel like the connection was at on like a scale of 1 to 10 with the receivers and you know how do you go about improving that this week heading into a big game on the road I think just like I said earlier just that being our first game together because I think we only had three returning starters from last year so um just us all playing together being on the same page I think we just need to get out of the way I think we'd be good like I said from now uh how many times did you go back and watch the game after the game and how do you watch film do you are you trying to self-critique right in the moment do you write notes or do you just kind of make mental uh mental notes of what you need to do better um so I first I just like know what I missed during the game and then after the game before like the film is out relased uh just mental notes go back to those placs I remember specifically and then as I go through the game I see what I need to get better at um see what I miss things of that and then I go back third fourth time maybe just watch the actual scheme see what was actually open what was good and then I just talked to D about it on the Deep ball to Jared Brown what were you seeing on that play and what do you kind of say to a guy like that after uh you know he comes back and uh you know he dropped the ball um so I seen it was the exact look that we had in practice from philm me expect that to happen and then after I throw it you know he dropped or whatever it's like hey it's fine bro we all drop passes we all miss throws and stuff so that was just the biggest thing when me for me with him just keeping him in the game keeping his head up in the game he did the same thing for me so how frustrating frustrating is a day like Saturday when you know you can make a lot of those throws or all those throws and you just didn't make him um I mean it's frustrating but you know it's first game you know what I'm saying you can only get better from there still young still got time but it need to get better faster when you do have those conversations with DLo how collaborative is it when it comes to I guess building the offense around the things that you're really good at and you're really comfortable with yeah so he builds offense around what the quarterback is good around and then it's just a lot of talking communicating he asks if you like this better or do you like it from this formation more um spacing wise timing wise just everything we just teamwork he said that communication is the biggest thing that needs improved head in a week two once that does get improved just how close do you think this offense is to being able to compete the way that you want them to be able to compete I think it's real close it's always like one thing like um like coule play from Saturday just like one read away or one block away um just things like that once we get all those things squared away we'll be fine when you were looking at the film can you give us a couple of specific plays when you looked at it and you said hey you know what if I didn't have those Jitters if you know if I'm playing like I know I can play I would have made that play um we had a play action pass I threw the corner to JB and we had a route coming over the middle intermediate route coming over the middle that was one um it was a couple plays where my feet just wasn't right and the ball just died on me um the fumble of course it was just me just hesitating on what I want to do when I got to that moment but other than that I mean [Music] Lenoris how excited are you uh about the chance to be a a starter in an SEC game coming up this week and what have you seen out of kuy's Defense so far um I'm very excited just ready to get moved on from week one onto week two and then next week after that um field boundary defense one high zone defense um number zero I'm sure yall know him from last year big guy fast guy athletic guy um they returned 10 starters on Def veteran defense veteran team honestly so we got to go there do our game plan folks and execute so you know a lot yeah yeah I yeah uh I saw after the game uh a lot of guys were coming up to you as you exited the field I think Luke Dodie Mike schula Clayton white do you even remember what they said to you as you're walking off uh they were just saying to me a win is a win they was like um know you're competitor know you like to like play good and you want to be perfect but you can't win in as hard at this level I'm still young still got time and they told me just keep my head on and be happy because a win is a win did a really good job Distributing the ball you had seven different guys that U recorded a catch two of those guys maio Bennett Michael Smith true freshman what does it say about those guys that they were able to carve out a role so early in their career just being Dependable uh they've been dependable since they got here uh both hardworking guys Mao Mike Dante all those guys they always up here Matt Fuller just watching film late at night 9 10 o'cl during fall Cam he's doing the same thing meeting when they can Dante's asking questions when he can in the QB room just being himself in and Mao quick learner doesn't make the same mistake twice and Mike is just a freak athlete so I'm just curious do talk to yourself during games I feel like you watch like QB's miked up and you can kind of hear them be like all right Joe like you got this like do talk to yourself or you kind of quiet I do uh sometimes not like anything crazy just like all right just calm down like you're good you're good you're fine uh Saturday that's what I was doing but other than that I mean same thing with the helmet communication are you calling out the blocking to the tight ends and wide receivers or is that on veran it just depends on cuz we a caller we can caller protection if I see something different I can change the protection it was we had a couple of those Saturday too so I mean it just depends all on the the defense
