Championship season but quite literally one of the greatest moments in LSU football history Matt Mack finding Skyler green for a a touchdown LSU in a tie ball game upends top 10 Georgia and what was a statement Victory this team hoping for many of those we're very pleased to be joined Again by Dr Matt mock joining us from the Denver area doc how are how are you man it's great to have you back on the show uh doing really well uh always enjoy coming on with you guys man it's uh it's our pleasure um I know you had an opportunity uh to see this team in Camp earlier this year I'd love your thoughts man just what it was like being around Brian Kelly and in this team for for a for a day uh yeah you know I always love coming back uh I think uh coach Kelly has uh has done a a tremendous job um I think some people forget kind of what he inherited uh wasn't wasn't great uh and kind of had to rebuild and do a lot of things um you I was there for their first practice uh and I told him this I was I was super impressed with how organized I mean very few false starts there was you know just they looked like they'd been practicing for for a month or so um and so uh the other thing I kind of I noticed right away was how much bigger they looked on defense um you know last couple years you know watch try to watch almost every game and it just seemed like we were overmatched uh defensively uh I don't think that's going to be the case this year you uh I'm certain you got a chance to either watch talk to Garrett nus me what were your impressions of uh of nus I I haven't uh been rooting for a player more than him uh in a long time uh you know always love every LSU quarterback that's there but um you know what he's what he's done for LSU he could have gone to any school he wanted to and transferred um but loved LSU uh loved what what what LSU football's about um and stuck with it um so there hasn't been someone I I've been rooting for more and I hope LSU fans uh show him some love uh and if things don't go perfect right away uh that they understand he really hasn't played that many games uh and and he's he's going to be all right yeah what's that like Matt that that transition going from a guy I mean look you got thrown into a tough situation I think we've talked about plenty in 2001 in the SC championship game made the most of it obvious and then started 02 were injured and came back back in 03 And1 the championship but what's that like for for Garrett finally getting the Reigns after waiting that long yeah you know it's a nerve-wracking uh you know you put in the work you've done everything you look good in practice um all that stuff but but football's hard sometimes you know uh hell you you know you throw a perfect pass hits the player's hands and it goes for an interception you did nothing wrong um but your stat line doesn't look great uh at the end of it so you know and and for someone that hasn't played a ton obviously he looked fantastic in the bowl game and and the times he has been able to play um but you know when you're you know in charge of it all and you open up against the tough opponent uh neutral sight uh you just never know how things are going to go um so um I think he's going to have a great year uh may take a few games before he kind of finds you know his footing and and gets comfortable um but I think I think he's going to be a tremendous leader for us and uh and really hope that uh that has a ton of success Matt Mack is with us if you as a quarterback would you rather especially in the situation with nus right taking over for the first time would you rather open with with the Marquee game like SC given what you're saying like it it may take a few games to kind of get your feet or would you rather that sort of like tune up before the the the big game uh you know my first ever start uh was at Virginia Tech um and they were ranked I think 12th or 13th at the time uh you know I didn't realize it but um blackburg it's loud uh it is a different so I think the neutral site will help a little bit but I think when your your first start is um against you know an opponent that is a tough place to play uh it makes it very difficult because you everyone's trying to understand you know uh in a game what plays you're calling doing checks things like that um so I think you know USC being a good team is a little bit of a disadvantage um but I think at least it's not necessarily in a hostile environment Matt mock with us here for a couple minutes good enough to join us on this uh Wednesday edition of AFR um I would love your thoughts getting to go out to LS shoes practice and getting to look at those wide receivers even after losing Lacy or excuse me after losing neighbors and Thomas and then you see the guys they have I mean give me some perspective as a quarterback on what you see in that group uh yeah I think there's a lot of guys that uh that are unproven um but uh but but sure looked the part um and so I think LSU is is um from you know starting with Coach Sabin to coach miles to Coach O and now coach Kelly have done a really great job of keeping the instate skill guys um in State uh and so we we've been extremely fortunate in the at the quarterback position to have plenty of targets uh so I don't I don't think uh NES is going to have any complaints that he doesn't have enough guys to throw to you I'm glad you brought up coach Sabin uh I was I had it on my list to ask you your your reaction obviously played for him at LSU what was your reaction when you you learned he was retiring I I was actually surprised it took that long um to be honest with you uh you know I think it's the reason I think Nick coach sa is one of the greatest coaches of all time no matter what level um but I think part of the reason he didn't have as much success at the NFL level is um players have a little more control um uh of things and his style of coaching and his system um is wonderful when there's one person in control uh and so I think he he quickly realized that that's just not where college football is at um and and I think he not feared but just kind of thought hey this this is not I've done enough I I don't want to do this um anymore and I don't honestly I don't blame him I you know I have tremendous amount of respect for uh college coach but I don't think that's something I would want to do um with with transfer portal and nil and all that stuff yeah is a dramatically different world there's no doubt when when you think back to it Matt like there's so much that's been brought up about that 03 staff right with Nick and and Jimbo and mus champ and even you drik duly and Haywood and Kirby was on that staff as well did you know like when you think back I mean it's been 21 years hard to say that but did you know what what that staff was at the time uh not of it you know when I when I so I was playing baseball and I kind of got recruited back and I came down and and I got to meet uh Jimbo mus champ dere all those guys just carried themselves in a way that you just kind of felt and this is this is kind of something special um that's going on but you know people forget that you know Adam gase was a ga Freddy kitchens was a ga Mel melt Tucker was on uh on the staff um Stacy serles who's had a tremendous amount of success as an offensive line coach um it just I mean the number of people that were there was was astonishing uh I mean the I got to ask the Kirby question like do you have a Kirby story were you like were you even aware that he was there I mean you're the the starting quarterback of a national championship team were you even aware of like a a defensive assistant running around out there uh well Kirby makes himself known so yeah yeah you you kind of know that you know um so and he he and will were uh were such good buddies so and Kirby Kirby's a super nice guy and you know um so yeah you for sure um and I got along with them really well I think that was the neat part too about you know coach Sabin uh not the most personable guy um but all those other guys you mentioned actually like players like being around them you know love the that environment so it was It was kind of uh it was just a fun staff to be around um I got two more things for you if I can your time much appreciated uh U awarded the 18s I I I don't I don't think well I don't know but I don't think back in O at the end of the 03 season when as The Story Goes you pass the number to to to our guy Jake Hester who works with us here at the station I don't know that you anticipated Matt it it becoming what it's become but can you go back and just and tell us what that was like when you how that all happened with you and Jake like passing that number was it a was it a formal informal thing like what how did that go uh well Jack maruchi hates me telling this story but uh so it was as informal as it can get um and so I was I just happened you know I was getting ready for the draft and I come back in and I sit in h Greg stream Fell's office and I said I said well who's who's getting 18 uh and he said Hester and I said I said oh I said I can't have an Evangel kid wearing 18 and uh and uh and so Jacob was in there I said I got to meet him and so I get up and you know go over and start and I really you know Jake is a great guy it's easy uh easy to like him instantly um and I said all right well this this is this is this isn't bad um and then so it was it was Greg Stringfellow myself um um Jack maruchi and Michael Bonnet uh and so uh after that and then Jacob went on to have a great career and be just a great guy um that's when it actually kind of us passing it on to someone um started uh Jacob was going to have the number anyway um it just happened uh that he happened to be just a a very similar player to me and um and and someone that all those same guys really liked did you get a chance to I mean obviously you didn't know at the time that that Josh Williams and Greg Penn would wear the 18 but your thoughts on those two guys I'm not sure if you had a chance to meet or talk to either of them yet I I did I think the coaches uh so um the coaching staff kind of knew who that may be I think um so I actually got to meet both of them when I was there they didn't know it um but they just said oh these are two leaders on the team W you to meet them type of thing so um super happy for him I think really cool um the the the the walk-on story and things like that I think that's just uh could couldn't think of two guys more deserving uh he is Matt mock 2003 National Champion the original 18 I guess we could say and uh clearly still a big tiger fan man it's always great when we get a few minutes of your time thanks for squeezing in I know know you're busy out there but we appreciate it yeah make sure Jacob hears that all right he he keeps on trying to play he's original all right you just huh you just keep reminding him that every
