Manz zardo goes deep twice cob and boy twirling gems heck even Lane Thomas Gets In on the ACT all while the guard's front office sits back and says see see that's what we get we should have just been patient Zach everything would have been fine if we just let this all play out hi welcome to the show it's the selus godcast I'm going to make a note of doing that right now instead of 30 minutes into the show just welcome everybody in right now that's Zach Mel on TJ zupy if nobody gave any immediate opinions or reactions about baseball then everyone would always be correct and that would be no fun it'd be better for my batting average on getting things correct though if I just waited for for more information but we like to operate with the information we have in front of us and based on that information the Guardians take two of three from a pirate Squad that the pitching has been struggling but two out of the three games the offense look great middle games not so much but overall you take the series you see some good things happening offensively I think some better at bats throughout the series maybe not all at all times but certainly within it you saw glimpses of what this offense could be on their best days but most importantly the guy that came up and hit back-to-back home runs in ways that look like mere images or wouldn't be a mere image cuz it'd be reversed right so it just be the exact same thing it's like watching a replay of manzardo going deep therapeutic do you feel therapeutic watching that it's Pam Beasley saying they're the same picture um yeah I I I fully I felt like I I threw a caveat a disclaimer out there for a week saying we've been begging for manzardo to come up and when he inevitably does and goes over 17 in his first week please don't yell at us that it was the wrong move process over results well he he squashed that possibility pretty quickly um and you just see what something they were missing I mean it's a left-handed power bat against right-handed pitching they've been throwing David fry and Lane Thomas in there as that person on a daily basis and so you don't have to do that anymore and thank God for roster expansion and September or you might not have seen it at all how crazy though that 2 days prior we watch Josh Naylor's leg almost explode before our eyes his ankle thankfully the dude's back in the line was an absolute super herero move like no selling it like Hogan you're you're hitting him with your finisher he just keeps getting back up and two days later it would seem like an easy thing to just say hey Manz zardo go take first base in your game back your your first game back up with us no no you're going to get the same thing we've seen pretty much every time manzardo has been in the lineup he's going to DH why do they not trust him at first base I don't get it especially when you have the built-in of excuse of nayor why don't you get off your feet again for another day this organization is not very direct and forthright about a lot of things but they are in saying manzardo is not going to play the field unless they get caught in some sort of game where there's defensive Replacements and shifting and he's the guy they need there so he knows that um he actually practiced by dhing consecutive days in triaa and uh devising a new routine to stay sharp with stretching and being in the weight room between a bats and I think his mindset is look whatever I have to do to get in the lineup in Cleveland I'll do it um so it's it's odd I mean this went from him coming up and them saying you know we're going to even test him out and write field just to keep that bat in the lineup to you may never play the field and you better hit when you get the opportunities um I I don't I don't get it uh but the bottom line is you have his Bat he is a boost over what you've been trotting out there and if deployed properly he can help you so um the lineup looks better on September 1st than it did for the last really since David fry started to go ice cold it's weird that it took the rosters expanding to make that happen but I won't argue with it then I'm sorry I'm I'm leading here with a negative and that he won't play the field and I don't understand it but the better thing is he's here Zach and he's certainly in in everything you can learn in one game where he homers twice what do you think he's going to look like but he certainly looked like a different guy different cat than the first time he was up here in terms of just how comfortable he looked I have to imagine the game is a little bit more slower compared to where he was at when he first got up here and in terms of speed that's something they even admitted that he talked about that it took him a long time to really get up to the speed of the game at the major league level yeah I mean he admitted there was a lot of pressure he came up at a time when the team was thriving and forging ahead to to have the best record in baseball and he put a lot of pressure on himself to keep that going and to deliver exactly what the club had hoped for when they traded Aaron svali for him a year earlier um and we all know when you put too much pressure on yourself and you expect Perfection it's really really difficult to achieve it so I think going back to Columbus while disappointing it gave him a chance to catch his breath and then with any player the second time you come up um I think you're just going to know not to put that sort of pressure on yourself and you don't have to worry about all those firsts and where am I supposed to go what am I supposed to do am I supposed to be in this meeting right now should I be out on the field taking ground balls am I um you know what time do I catch no ground balls what time do I need to catch the bus can I do I have to eat from the postgame spread or can I go grab something better um you know there's all those things that you just get the routine more you understand it because you've been through it and I think now too like the team has solidified where it is he doesn't have to put that pressure on himself because there are other people that can that are carrying the weight and then when you have results that that is going to make him a thousand times feel better even if you went to this game in a better head space than maybe you you were at when you first arrived on the scene the first time they called him up to get that those first side of the way to round the bases and and do it again confidence isn't the government the lone governing factor in how a player performs but it's certainly part of this equation it it is definitely part of that formula and we know he had the talent there's a million guys that come up here have the talent but don't fully realize it and not that a two Homer game when you're first back up here in the major leagues as rosters expand tells us one way or another how the rest of this season forget about the rest of his career is going to look but at least it kind of gets that part out of the way for him at least just in the the next several weeks weeks as this club's going to be heavily counting on him against right-handed pitching they you've kind of said they've set this up to be in such a way where they're so desperate for it that they don't want to put the pressure on him but they kind of have just in and how long it's taken to get him back up here but thankfully he has that first game where now you believe in yourself but now you have the I have it on video I have it on my phone I can watch it as many times as I want I had a successful day at the major league level and now I can do it again and it's not like you know doing it against the Pirates yeah their ra has been terrible but to beat up on a guy like Keller today even the entire lineup that's that's fine it's a that's solid pitcher and so that's not just some uh you know quad a sort of pitcher that you beat up on today so I think that's all a positive to kind of get that part out of what could stop him the roadblocks and let the rest just let the talent carry you and the hard work to carry you to what you're ultimately going to be yeah I'm sure going back to Columbus without getting that first home run was weighing on him a little bit too just cuz you you know you it was funny he was saying I asked if he knew the first one was gonna get over the fence because the wind was blowing in and he said he's like I've never done that here so I didn't know how the ball will travel you know what part of the Outfield do you want to hit it toward to have the best chance of getting it into the season beats and he's like you know the last thing I wanted was that thing clanging off the wall and I'm standing on First looking like a dope so um yeah it's not only did he get the first I mean he's he's got two he's a pro at this now do you know the last Cleveland hitter to have a two Homer game that included their first major league home run I do not well of course known power hitter Ernie Clement oh 20 21 he went deep today how about that things all rhyme yeah I hope uh I hope his Cleveland career manzardo goes a little bit better than Clem did but I just I'm happy that it happened because as you said you the last thing you wanted is for us to be screaming about this needing to happen and then him come up here and resemble the the exact same guy who was before but both of us said we didn't really care about those results anybody is capable even a great hitter Josh Naylor has gone through some real bad struggles this year even Jose Ramirez in his career had a stretch like half a year where he just was not the same guy everybody goes through that but when you set it up this way to be where is this guy you need the help against right-handed pitching and if you were to call him up and it was more like the the strikeouts and the just contact that wasn't going anywhere it it would have just then it would have started to feel like uh oh on top of the fact that the organization waited so long for him because I I even said before are you waiting so long because you don't believe in him the way that you used to I I would feel like if I believed in him as much as I thought that this organization did they would have been seeking out opportunities forget September call-ups but seeking them out for this guy to come up here and they weren't doing it and so it was leading me to wonder is there something they're seeing here that they don't like all that as much as that gets thrown out the window in one game it kind of feels like it does everybody even us get a chance to just relax and now just let this guy play yeah I agree and and you're trying to you've got a month left four weeks of the regular season and then who knows but You' you've got to piece together the best roster you can how can you maximize how can you get the most out of it's you're 40 man roster not just the 26 I mean you're evaluating who can help you and and look I I I still think Valera can help them I think there's room for him on the roster um in a in a part-time role hitting Ry playing The Outfield I don't know that we're going to see that but you need to the one benefit is men zardo's gone through those struggles at the big like he he has something he can learn from right so if you have limited time left in the season you would hope he'd have a better chance of getting on the right track because he's he knows what to expect up here um but you've got to use every resource at your disposal and I think making sure you're not like you you got to put out the best lineup every night they haven't been doing that and he's someone that can he just his presence if he's the hitter you thought he could be when you that that's why you did what you did last year you could have stayed the course and you could have tried to win the division with you know 80 whatever wins and tried to catch lightning in a bottle get hot at the right time all those stupid cliches um and you didn't and part of the reason you didn't is because you maximized Aaron sali's trade value and you went and got yourself a top 100 Prospect and a guy who could hit hit for power something you hadn't been able to develop so use it like that's you believed in this guy immensely last year you believed in him enough I mean he had a great spring called him up decently early in the year so you've believed in him so you got to get the most out of him and you you've got to put him in a position to succeed in this lineup and and I think as you said if he can be what you thought he could be the lineup just looks so much more capable even if it's only against righties even if it's just as a DH like that's that's a big upgrade yeah I mean think about the conversations we've had for this team against right-handed pitching we've said you could make the case probably multiple guys shouldn't be in there but at least one it felt like every lineup against the righty there is one spot in that lineup somebody absolutely does not belong and it's not a case of like bone Naylor or Brian rokio you want to make the case you don't want anybody else at shortstop okay def recent defensive struggles aside okay but when you're looking at the lineup and you're like but that could be a DH or that could be a first baseman or that could be even a right fielder it just didn't make a lot of sense that they would run a lineup out there with Kyle manzardo just wasting away in the minor leagues so that the fact that that we've crossed that off the list yes I'm frustrated that it took so long but I'm willing to just put that water under that bridge and say okay but now we're past that he's up here where he should be and hopefully you never we never have to have this conversation ever again about this guy well he's also 24 and there's not much left to learn to figure out at triple right yeah I get it not every player comes up and sticks immediately and most of them go back down at some point fine and he can use that experience as we discussed to his Advantage but now you got to let him you got to let him go like there's no he wasn't there was no there was no aha moment on August 27th when he's at the plate hitting a double you know I don't know the team would say if we didn't call him up today specifically none of this would have happened if there's another world Another Universe where they had called him up on August 27th maybe he doesn't Homer twice in September on September 1st to help you win a game and maybe they're worse off that's what they would tell you Zach was the exact right amount of seasoning you know if you take that thing out of the oven even a few minutes too early you might not get the the beautiful cake that you're hoping for it's going to be mushy inside or I don't know you're the one that likes cooking references so help me out here I don't know if you don't take it out of the oven in time your whole dinner part's dead from Hunger oh okay I didn't know where we were going there for a second but it is I don't know I just they they like we watched this lineup struggle for weeks on end and hitters struggle against you know fry and Thomas against righties were brutal for a long time and you had Quan and Ramirez and nay all struggling and it's like how do you not try to change anything I don't think you can just just because he hit two home runs on his call up day doesn't mean you could just I don't know there should have been changes long before it but as you said we'll move past it well the weird thing is the first time he came up you remember why we had a whole show about it it was disappointing I like Yay manardo oh no Quan he went down and I thought we were going to have a repeat when when Naylor went down in the Box on Friday night I thought oh oh God his leg exploded again I mean he turned his ankle but when you first saw it what were you initially thinking that he turned his ankle which that hurts there was no Panic at all there was no oh God I mean you never know but looked like something I think we've all done while playing sports or I I mean I did not do it to that extent but I did that just randomly walking in the airport a couple weeks ago then you look around to see wait did anybody see that yes there's thousands of people everybody saw you um obviously his was much worse and you never know and and that's the type of thing where I think everyone's like hey just take a day or two off man it's okay I that thing but of course he was begging to be in the lineup the next day and he was and he's also probably like I gotta get my DH day in now before menardo gets up here yeah I'm gonna need to because because Jose's going to need one of those days throughout the week so better hurry up and get mine in but for reasons that had me panic a couple couple different reasons one because Naylor has had past issues with the wheels I'm I'm I'm concerned any time he's down on the ground in any degree of Agony it was a good sign that he was able to leg out the hit and so you're like okay well at least at least it's everything's still attached I don't know how much longer it was going to work but it was still attached for him to bounce back and and still you to be back in the lineup I I could not believe that but it's for the second part of this that also had me concerned because he's finally swinging the bat with some Authority again and let's see going back to the finale against the Royals he had three hits there the three hit game in on Friday night he was one for four on Saturday ended a with a double and then went two for three today with a run score to walk I mean he looks like he's seeing the ball better he's hitting the ball with authority the other way too like he is everything that we saw early on that really had us excited for the season that he was going to have you seen glimpses of that here recently and so so when he went I was like oh god of course right now as he starts to really turn the corner when this team needs it is when he would go down but thankfully threw on the cape and was able to rebound and be back in the lineup the next day yeah I mean a big part of this is their they had four All Stars in this lineup which is crazy no one would have predicted that but they were all struggling and you know I think we can understand that fry had a lot of regression coming and just so happened to suffer an elbow injury that hasn't helped matters but you had Naylor Ramirez and Quan who weren't clinging to their abilities for a while too so that changes a lot when the top half of the lineup can take pressure so you're not relying it doesn't have to be roio B Naylor Tyler Freeman delivering the key hits that that helps you know you had that top half of the lineup really humming in the first half and they were scoring five runs a night and all sudden you know if those guys do get back on track and you've got other players who just can play a role like manzardo and Noel and that lineup looks a lot deeper and then maybe Lane Thomas doesn't need to hit second every day and try to emerge from a terrible Slumber in not the best positions to succeed so it's I know some days I I I I don't want to say everything's solved like the the offense looked fantastic from the seventh inning on against the Royals on Wednesday and it looked incredible Friday night and it looked really good Sunday even though they squandered some scoring chances but it also looked completely inept Saturday night so they're still finding their way um baby steps baby steps it's just the lineup you see the construction and it just it looks more formidable I think with Noel going the way he's going still with menardo in there you know you get Thomas and fry in there against lefties it looks very capable so there's a way to do this I think they feel more confident I they they felt like they'd be able to get and it's going to be a lot of platooning like that's just the way this roster is they don't have the bazas and the doers up here yet you know maybe in a couple years it's different but um they've got to survive with platoon and getting guys in the lineup on the right days where it makes the most sense I mean heck I'll even take the victory of two out of three days where Jimenez goes deep where we haven't seen his power at all and that's that's a big one too just CU so I was just going to say like you know we we mentioned you had four All-Stars in the top five spots in the lineup but the one spot you didn't in the first half was they haven't had a number two hitter all year and I don't know the Jimenez is the best option for that I don't think is a we we've said like just move everybody up one it it's pretty simple Jose second Naylor third whoever fourth Noel manzardo fry it doesn't matter um and Lane Thomas should make sense in that spot against lefties because his numbers are fantastic against them historically but against righties you know there isn't really a great answer there and if Jimenez can hit the ball hard he's not a guy who's going to strike out much he's going to put it in play you want to avoid double plays you like that he can steal a ton of bases like there are elements that make him a good fit he's just got to hit the way he's been hitting recently and then it can work but just pulling the ball with authority we just haven't seen that at all that this year from him and when he was going so well in that big Allstar season it wasn't because he found a way to hit the ball 116 every single time was because he was pulling his fly balls he was optimizing where he was hitting him and he did that quite frequently and he's I I I don't expect him to be a 25 home run guy a 30 home run guy guy but he was not the guy that was hitting what 1617 we were this late in the year and looking at his home run total and I had did that like a week ago and I said where where did all of his power go he has n none whatsoever and so to be able to have two out of three days where he he does find a way to pull it get it in the air get it in the air into the seats I'm encouraged it doesn't take much because the the offense has been so Dreadful at times but that's a sign of encouragement to me it also helps playing the Pirates but yeah I mean and and look they they fought back Friday night too that could have been quite the gut Punch If they don't win that game and you lose two or three to the Pirates then you have to go to Kansas City to go to LA could have gotten rough but yeah just like the not calling up manzardo that's we don't have to think about that but it's a pirates the pitching has not been good for the Pirates but the Pirates are a pesky team they've got some good hitters on there some I think half of that lineup is pretty it's inexcusable to give up damage to them their pitching's been pretty atrocious you avoided skin you didn't have to face Jared Jones and especially since you took care of Mitch Keller um yeah I mean 203 was like the bare minimum right yeah I'm I'm perfectly perfectly pleased with the way the overall element of this series were I would have I mean you give up three runs on Saturday and you don't find a way to win I mean that's disappointing but overall I I don't think I don't look at the Pirates the same way I'm looking at the white socks here and saying well this is the team that every time you play them you need to sweep them at this point of I know they have been going through their struggles but that's still a a competent team that is capable of beating you on any single night so I'm two out of three fine with it pop quiz do you know what the white sock do you know what the white sock record is no no I don't can you guess how many losses they have through September 1st I don't know uh 93 I have no idea 107 107 I've not even looked I haven't even remotely four weeks left them every time I look at the standings you know it shows like the streak you have Guardians W1 KC L5 we should talk about that white socks L10 I swear that number is always in double digits they are 31 and 107 they have four weeks left and I think if they lose 13 more games they're tied for the most losses in MLB history they might do that in two weeks oh my good I have not paid attention I didn't even know they had crossed the 100 barrier but they're five five against the Guardians unbelievable it's one sixth of their wins well how would they fair when they have to go up against Boyd and Cobb two of baseball's best how would that happen I was thinking about it today Zach and and Boyd another terrific outing we'll get to cob Boyd another terrific outing just more of the same from him just totally in control just cruising along looks the command looks impeccable how how is this man able to do this coming back but I was thinking about man where this rotation is at not just now but into the future it's kind of feeling like it's critical that they find a way to bring him back and he might be pitching himself into an actual decent contract and I don't I don't even know if if that's a territory the guardian should will want to play and to give resources but I kind of think that if this continues maybe you ought to find a way to get that done I was trying to think about that too like they've got interesting cases if yeah why why talk about the present and how well boy and cob pitched when we can just talk about the future and um you know you've got Tanner BBY and Gavin Williams and then so many question marks right what are you doing with Tristan McKenzie who's going to be eligible for arbitration what are you doing with Logan Allen where's he at is he just gonna have to fight for the number five spot in the rotation okay but who's occupying spots three and four Shane Bieber you GNA sign him you gon to try to can you outbid I don't know the Dodgers who feel like a team that would give him two for 44 or something um Cobb Boyd where are they cantillo it's don't they need a presents yeah that either Boyd or Cobb give them a a veteran who is the ceiling is not high but the floor is if he they're able if they're healthy and able to pitch you know they're going to give you just a solid performance every time they go out there so maybe Cobb is tough futurewise because of the age what is he 37 or gon to be 37 and and and he's had so many injuries this year and like it's not his fault and a lot like some of like the nail is a fluky thing um but I just don't know that's I wouldn't want to bank on him too much I mean if you can bring him back at a really low risk investment sure Boyd is interesting I mean this was supposed to be basically a two-month audition for the league and he partnered with Cleveland thinking well they know what they're doing here and let me go there and set myself up as best I can and from the Guardians it's like we need anybody please come here and so what does that look like does he get a multi-year deal somewhere how much does it cost um is there Goodwill between the two sides so that they would talk early and maybe Hammer something out I don't know but I mean Beyond even Goodwill I mean that's I don't I don't necessarily buy into that but what about someone that can't it wasn't his entire rehab of course but at the tail end of the rehab the me this is the medical team this these are the trainers these are the coaches that you're working with and now they're familiar with you and you had success why mess with a good thing now it doesn't matter if you don't give him anything close to to what everybody else is willing to give but if if it's in the ballpark and I was comfortable here I enjoyed my time here I like the coaches and everyone already knows what my arm is capable of I I would C that would hold some weight for me yeah that's that's what I meant and that's that's all True to this point it's only been a handful of starts so who knows what this looks like a month from now but yeah I mean they're they're going to need depth they have options but they have to like pick and choose to solidify what this looks like the rotation has never been more it's never been more stable this season than it is now except for maybe the first week of the year when Bieber was healthy and McKenzie hadn't fallen off a cliff yet um but it's it's never been more stable than it is now and it's never been this I don't even know the word like this much of a messy puzzle in terms of Podge yeah in years I mean I was trying to think of just instances in the last like 30 years where they've brought in starting pitchers midseason and you've even had the inclination to be like hm this is a guy they should probably keep after this little you know hired assassin like Ken Hill was pretty good when they got him in 19 95 in the second half but that was it um you know they tried with other people midseason or or just on a one-year thing and a lot of those didn't work out and then in the last decade they haven't needed starting pitching so we this wasn't a thing um so this is weird it's foreign and it's working it's I mean those two guys and I thought Cobb Cobb was really insightful about it too after his start Sunday where he's like look we were brought in here to chew up Innings we can see when Cade Smith or hunter gatis or Tim Heron come in and you see oh my God these guys already made 65 appearances this season like that's that's a lot so it's our job to pitch deep into these games and for for Cobb it's been frustrating because he had to miss two weeks and there was nothing he could do about it and it's not like it was an arm injury or something he had been dealing with previously so he was frustrated cuz he was brought in here to pitch seven Innings every 5 days and hasn't been able to do that yet and as he's sitting you know on in The Dugout watching the Guardians face the Yankees and Gavin Williams leave early and the bullpen have to cover a bunch of innings that he felt he should be covering but he couldn't because of the injury um it was frustrating so you know they know what they're supposed to do why they were brought in here and the big thing is they they also they have the experience they've pitched in meaningful September action before and you know that maybe not boy as much since he spent so much time in Detroit but um and I think they also understand like the importance of just not burning out that Bullpen which is is very important um I think it was big Sunday like they didn't have to use classet so maybe you got him for all three games in Kansas City if you need them um things little things like that I think are big and Cobb even told step vote this is kind of going against that but you know he I was wondering like he's he's got a perfect game through six and he's coming off this injury and I'm sure if he was like 25 years old he would be livid if he got yanked in the seventh inning at 880 p es and hadn't allowed a base runner but he told Steven vote after the fifth inning look I'm coming off an injury I went three innings in a simulated game the other day I haven't pitched in a major league game in a few weeks I understand even if I haven't G up a base runner like whenever you have to pull me pull me I know I'm probably not going more than six what a guy yeah I mean it's what a guy right and so I think that look vote was going to do what he needed to do anyway but he had even he had given it thought like hm I wonder if there's going to be a kind of an uncomfortable conversation coming up here and cob made sure that wouldn't be a thing so just you see how that experience and that leadership can help you and and these are guys who I mean it's it's it's incredible I was skeptical I thought like hey these are good these are guys who can chew up Innings I don't know if they're going to be good Innings um it was better than what they had it's been way beyond anything I expected there's a a shirt wrestling shirt wreck everyone and leave as thinking for cob it'ss show up eat Innings get ground balls and leave this is he just continues to do that and today watching this guy work his way magnificently through this lineup and and get through where he was at I we we Marvel at the guys that get lots of strikeouts and have electric stuff you know sches we were both on some level sad that we don't get to see that up close even though everyone's kind of breathing a s for leaf as the every game matters so much but there still is something wonderful about watching a veteran pitcher kind of do what Cobb did on Sunday and that's be able to work the Arsenal get early contact work ahead in the count just never let the other team really settle in and not because they're heading back to the Dugout shaking their head after his 13th strikeout but just because he's working the ball in and out and changing speeds it's just a pitching clinic and that still has a place in this game I loved watching every Boyd has been fun from that from that angle and then Cobb I wasn't sure remember we said for all the good that you felt coming out of his first couple of appearances with with Cleveland now you didn't know what to expect because this injury you didn't know if that puts him back at square one no it's almost like it made him better now he needs to be wrecking every single fingernail before he start he's still at Square [Laughter] three and and you just it felt like maybe the team wasn't doing this I'm sure they were behind the scenes but I know for me and I think I can speak for both of us you're thinking about a series or you're thinking about the week ahead and you're like okay well they've got BBY this day and uh Lively this day and then it's going to be Carrasco and you're already you just assume that that day you're going to need four or five innings from your Bullpen or HM this day looks like it's it's TBD but it's probably going to be cantillo can you really count on him for more than like three or four Innings a lot of times it's just like a schedule loss and you don't have that now I mean I it's I'm not trying to make this out to be like the 20178 Cleveland rotations that were historically good r up strikeouts chewed up Innings but it's at least stable you've got five guys who could conceivably go six strong Innings any night and I think you take that for granted because for years and years and years in Cleveland that was the standard that was the norm um but it wasn't for the first 10 I mean really until like Cobb was hurt so30 games this season sorry I'm just managing a crisis upstairs I love when I look over my phone and my my son is sending me Facebook Messenger posts it's like oh great either it's can I do something outside either that or my daughter has destroyed something hey Dad she did this it thankfully it wasn't that it was just I want to go play outside and I got to be the bad parent that says no your dad's sitting in front of a computer doing a PO a postgame podcast here no I have to be the bad guy you can't go play outside what have I become Zach what if I I am now the mean parent do you know I mean that I can't relate cuz um I'm the I'm the great parent the great parent who did not plan this this is not a perk of my job by any means but you know speak I forgot to mention Andre SZ who's been he's been hitting the ball for well for a few weeks now right and do you know why do you know who got to meet Andre SZ my son oh okay I brought him to the ballpark I had like an hour to kill before a game a few weeks ago and just happen stance was not I did not ask for this it was not planned but he met Andre s menz who is his favorite player I don't really know why um but he loves Andre s menz and gave him a fist bump he was very shy Jimenez was great and couldn't get my son to like converse with him and he kept trying and finally Jimenez said can you just wish me good luck and my son Charlie said good luck Andre simz and ever since he's hit the ball well so I just wanted to bring that up because one you said you're the bad parent and I wanted to one up you but also the misel Jinx might not be hereditary might not be pass down from generation to generation you know what what the force seeks it's balance so you are on one side and what do you need to balance that well someone that is is the exact opposite so it is your son he fulfills the prophecy here in this in this case cuz there I mean I my thing won't stop I wrote about class potentially winning the sa young or or what a Rel would have to do on Thursday that story ran and Friday he gave up a home run on a 100 m hour cutter that was like yeah it was middle in but Andrew McCutchen took it the opposite field did you did you see his reaction when he swung though no McCutchen they showed it and it it wasn't quite at real speed it was slightly slowed down and it was almost like his Bat like recoiled a little bit as he was hitting it it was like his Bat was even like well I don't know I guess I don't know if I want to make contact with this but it didn't when you see a home run and it they show the slow motion and it just looks beautiful this one even it didn't even look pretty off the bat it just McCutchen's been a great player throughout his career and he took it the other way and he got it over the fence and this one was just like even even the Home Run didn't look like he got it maybe necessarily all cleanly to be able to get it over the fence but he did and we had been saying like for him to have a legitimate shot you probably can't allow another run the rest of the year earn run maybe that's still true maybe he could have maybe this one's okay I think Z is at like 071 now but the bum but but there is to to the point of the Jinx there's a coach on the guardian staff who is very well read um and he came up to me this weekend and he said so what were you thinking when when McCutchen hit that out um and I was like oh cuz my story ran he's he said right when that ball got over the fence I thought to myself that damn article so even I worry that the misel Jinx has seeped into Cleveland's Dugout or at least among the coaching staff um but I don't know maybe I should write about scoble yeah yeah just stay away from man's Z Naylor Lane Thomas anybody that's having some success here lately just stay want me just write about the 1948 the drought every day oh what if you write about the same thing again can you cancel it out he read about class again funny you mention that I just finished a class story I don't know when it's going to run but I'm sure the longer I hold it the uh more runs will get up then it'll never see the light of day feel like that always happens I know we were we said it before it's shocking how quickly CL became the team's alltime saves leader and I had seen a graphic who was like well Cody Allen did it in this many games and EM Emanuel CLA I that doesn't matter right right it's not like through somehow through the games he was more efficient to do it than Cody Allen which yeah I don't knock well efficiency cuz he led the league in s blown saves last year that aside he's got lots and lot of had the greatest closer of all time and he's got like eight saves right but also Cody Allen wasn't the closer because the team didn't want him to be the closer when he initially got here and it took some time to work his way into the role class was sort of the closer but he wasn't full-time the closer that first stretch in Cleveland and then eventually you take off and he's obviously the closer but I it was surprising to even watch that play out because he's so young he's still so young but I was glad that he got to have that moment and it wasn't uh you see so many times where a guy has a a moment and doesn't doesn't even publicly display that and fans don't get a chance to kind of enjoy that with them and you hear afterwards oh well it's just a number and I'll I I'll look back later in my career and enjoy that I was glad that the Guardians put out the you know everyone celebrating with the the champagne afterwards and on the field everyone congratulated him and the camera stuck with him it was really cool moment and I don't know if it's just a result of getting older and I appreciate these things more than I than I would have in my youth but I'm always I'm always thankful when somebody has been really good at what they do and they get that recognition for it and they get this the crowd to be behind them and they sort of get a a reciprocation of hey you've been amazing at this and you deserve all of the admiration and love that we're about to give you I was just so happy for him to be able to experience that and the fans to be able to see some of that yeah I I the cool thing with him is is he doesn't care about the personal accolades like yeah he he's glad he's the all-time saves leader because that that means he's pitched really well for three and a half years now and it means that it sets him up to like he I think there's a lot of personal um challenging himself and and he feels like he can be the best pit closer in the world and he wants to try that out on the grand stage so you can ask him you know what does it mean to to pass Cody Allen what does it mean to be in the thick of the sa young race what does it mean to put up these jarring numbers what does it mean to make hitters look foolish and he'll say like it's great but that's not the goal here he wants to be on the mound in the World Series being that last line of defense he wants history hanging from his fingertips he wants to be the one in control of his team's Destiny he wants to be the one to extinguish the opponent and send them home and I think any competitor has a degree of that inner Drive I think for a closer you have to have that mindset a good closer you have to have that mindset and it's why it's like yeah this is cool but this is also just a save in August and he wants to be I like everybody wants to play in October and you hear everybody say the right things like oh you know we're just it's all about helping the team win and for him like it's that times 100 where it's just yeah I want the team to win so that I can be on the mound and I like it killed him to have to intentionally walk Aaron judge at Yankee Stadium a couple weeks ago cuz he wants to face the best in the moment and just prove to himself that there's nothing he can't do in a ninth inning like he that's why he threw those two innings in that game at Yankee Stadium and then immediately went back to the Dugout and said can I go a third and vot said no you silly goose in so many words probably um you know it like he goes four consecutive nights recording a save and that fifth day like Steven vote has to avoid him because he doesn't want to have to have that conversation and have even the slightest chance of Cl convincing him that he's fine to pitch so it's just it's it's cool and I I know that that M you can see in his face like that moment in the clubhouse toasting like that was meaningful to him but pales in comparison to what he really wants and I I don't know I just I I think there's a way he kind of characterizes all of that that opens your eyes because it's not the same old like oh I want to win a World Series for my team no it's like I want to be the one that throws that pitch like I it's almost like I don't know like I I I feel like I'm a good driver in bad weather and I'd rather just be behind the wheel because I trust myself driving through the snow or the rain or whatever and maybe someone else could do it and we'd get to where we need to go safely but like I I'm pretty confident I can do it so let me just I'll drive us through this blizzard I'll put on four-wheel drive or whatever and he's like yeah like I don't know Kate Smith can probably shut the door when we have a big moment in the playoffs but like I want to be that guy I know I can do it give me the chance um and let me just turn off the lights and I I don't know is there anyone else you'd rather have on the mound in Cleveland history maybe Andrew Miller in Cleveland history in Cleveland history with a World Series at stake well that might be a good one to save for the off season so maybe I shouldn't answer it but right now I think I would take CL now this season even over Andrew Miller in the 16 postseason are those the only two candidates 95 Jose Mesa yeah I don't know specifically a stretch that he was on but yeah yeah he would be I'm not sure Rafael beton Court Season I don't know if Rafael bet ended with him getting shelled in game seven in Boston save this write it down right now and save this for the off season we maybe we had we ought to do a draft the guys You' most want on the mound 05 Bob Howry yeah and then 17 Tyler Olsen yeah didn't give up a run it's incredible nobody from the 2018 Bullpen please and then one of us will with the last pick will be barowski we'll have to have barowski can you imagine can you imagine an ' 07 if they got to the World Series and it was game seven and he came in no my heart would already be out of my chest you'd be able to physically like the cartoons where it's literally pumping out of their chest that would be me like everyone's got their champagne ready to pop if they win the World Series but you're like I can't wait if we don't have anything harder I need this right now can't sit through these three outs they're just Cleveland's leading and they still go put the plastic up on the other team's Clubhouse we'll just take out the middle man let's save ourselves some time as it is September 1st was noted on the broadcast a shout out to Andre not for for bringing this up and reminding me of it but rosters expand you used to see lots of prospects come up guys that would just fill a certain role and back back in 2013 scrawny little middle infielder that was really quick on the bases and had some good sense of running the bases was brought up to pretty much do that be the designated pinch Runner guy named Jose Ramirez on Twitter made his debut no no I I don't follow you on Twitter I I unsubscribed he made his debut in Detroit he his job was to be a pinch Runner and he forgot his cleats his cleats didn't make it to Detroit with him so he had to borrow some white cleats from the tigers's clubhouse staff they had just a basic pair of white cleats they were two sizes too big his helmet's already too big he's wearing what number 62 like if you look at that guy are you looking at him on September 1st 2013 thinking hey I bet that guy uh 11 years from now will rank second in team history in home runs future Hall of Famer yeah no no not not at all do you remember who he replaced in his debut game was it Carlos Santana Carlos Santana let's let's walk our way through this this was a game the starting lineup for the 2013 Cleveland Indians featured Michael Bourne in Centerfield Nick swisser hitting second at first base Jason Kipnis at second base hitting third Carlos Santana your catcher cleaning up followed by Michael Brantley and left field batting fifth estral Cabrera the shortstop batting sixth the designated hitter Jason kubel wow batting seventh Mike AIS at third base doing a great job in center field but this time at third base hitting eighth and Drew stubs in right field batting nine so that inning played out Carlos Santana let me let me put this to do you know what Carlos Santana did to get on base any guesses did he walk he walked show them what he's one replaced by Jose Ramirez then we have Michael Brantley who walked you get a a bunt sacrific bunt by his Drupal Cabrera they intentionally walked Jason kubel and then in his first time in a major league game pinch running Jose Ramirez scores courtesy of mik AIS who hits a flyball home run to left field it was a grand slam mik AIS Grand Slam and Jose Ramirez scored and that was his first time on a Major League field September 1st 2013 trying to imagine what it would be like to run in the infield dirt with shoes that are two sizes too big it was a 4 nothing game those four runs were the difference in this game Detroit had 11 hits zero runs I feel like I've seen that story so many times earlier this year but that was the Jose Ramirez debut and yeah not a single one of us thought that that was going to be anything more than hey remember that little scrawny kid that came up and pinch ran that one time in 13 I mean it it took another couple of years before we believed anything else because tying it back to the beginning if we just would have withheld our opinions we would have looked a lot smarter that's right so in honor of that we'll be back at the end of the postseason for our next show or we'll tell you all the things that we thought were going to happen we just didn't get a chance to tell you but we were right about it the whole time I thought we were going to get a nice little air show in the background today no just overcast Skies maybe we did it was just so washed out I couldn't see it
