Intro [Music] welcome to cena's live coverage of apple's far out event where we're expecting so much new tech today iphone 14 new apple watches maybe even air pods i'm bridget carey and with me is my co-host justin easter but you know him as justin tech how are you feeling about today justin oh i am so excited for all these new apple products and we have a lot going down today this is our pre-show we're going to be talking about rumors and expectations for all this new tech and then we're gonna watch the keynote and then we're gonna come back to you with our post show and talk about all the announcements that keynote is gonna start at 10 a.m pacific time 1 p.m eastern now bridgette who are we bringing on this show to talk about this stuff oh we got lots of scene at ace reporters on the ground at apple park's headquarters in california uh we are going to patrick and scott and we got lisa over there so it's going to be a lot of guests well we're going to be talking all the way up until that keynote begins because that's how it works here we chat it up we talk about our hopes our dreams our expectations we answer your questions and then when the event starts when tim cook and friends start their keynote you're going to keep this open we're going to mute we're going gonna keep this stream open we're gonna have the chat room running because you can chat here you can't chat over and watch an apple and we're gonna be like your second screen experience and when it's over you just come back to our tab we're gonna be back to give reactions and break it all down and you can watching the chat feeding us your comments now we are going to get a little into all the details but quick answer justin between all the rumors we've seen of multiple iphone 14 models multiple apple watches what are you more into the iphone or the apple watch today okay well i'm excited for both i'm excited for the iphone mainly because i have a 12 pro and i'm just ready for an upgrade but the apple watch pro has really got my eyes i love using my apple watch series 7 for working out and the idea of a more durable bigger screen and a watch that's devoted to workouts and tracking them that's that's very exciting for me so i can't wait to see that and then i can't wait to if it's real play around with it and make some videos on it yeah i i think for the first time i'm actually yeah for the first time i'm actually in the apple watch camp of being more into like what are they gonna do with the apple watch now all these rumors about a pro model um i would love to see how durable it is because mine's a little dinged up a little bit uh but i'm also really nervous about what this iphone 14 is going to look like but i want to jump over to see what it's like at apple's headquarters is patrick holland ready for us i'm wondering besides hot it's a little early over there um but i am thinking a lot about what this new iphone 14 is going to look like he's going to tell us what we're expecting but there's been so many rumors about um what they're doing with the notch it's making me nervous there's been things about how it's going to be instead of a notch a pill shape or a pill in a hole punch you know it doesn't look that attractive to me yeah what do you think well what i was going to say is i feel like this is the first year in many years where there haven't been these photos that were leaked that were like undeniable this is what the iphone's going to look like i feel like this year we have so many different images that i don't really know whether there are going to be bumps on the cameras or whether it's going to be flush or whether it's going to be one big pill shape or there's going to be a pill and a dot and i love that right like i miss like the surprise factor of apple events so the fact that i truly don't i have ideas of what it could be but don't fully know like this is what it's gonna look like is exciting for me you know yeah uh stephen beecham our producer can you go to that image that uh i think bgr uh made up where it's like uh the reports of how it could be two phones side by side they had one with a a pill what are they going to call this thing it's like a tic-tac a pill and a hole and then the other one it was just one long one long pill yeah they're they're saying that perhaps apple could stitch these two cameras together by just like faking it out with putting some black coloring between it and you'll have indicator lights in between like a little green or red dot to let you know like oh the camera's on or you're recording um so i i mean if dude it looks like something you can't rub off your screen you know like i i i'm not exactly a fan of changing for the sake of change there but i just hope the camera's better because frankly with all of our you know recording that was basically our front-facing camera that's the age of 2022. we're in the tick tock world you know so i kind of want like if you're gonna change it up fine just make me look better make me look flawless thank you and that that is a that is a big rumor right that the front-facing camera is essential is supposed to be getting a larger sensor an f 2.2 aperture lens and an upgrade to the autofocus so both of those features will make that front-facing camera a much stronger stronger camera i love my facetime i'm i love like making my tic tocs and it's just like as simple as like putting down my phone so getting a clear image from that camera is really important to me and it has been a while i think since 2019 since that uh since there's been like a very large upgrade to the front-facing camera so oh oh my god we have patrick he's here and he's in the theater patrick can you hear us hey guys how are you guys doing you looking and sounding really good at home amazing it's looking like dark in there yes it's a theater you know we got some uh little frito and unlike the outdoors which is very very very decided it's like when you're a kid and your mom or daddy's taking maybe just for the air cooking but luckily this movie could be a good movie too so i'm really excited to be here i feel like very they're just two different things yesterday was my sixth anniversary scene that's today is my very very first in-person apple event so what a you know what i'm saying so i got my apple green back here i got those c netter lisa right there there we go and we've got mother senators wandering around as well how are you guys doing someone saying questions what's on your mind yeah well what we're wondering patrick is can you give us an overview what do you think we're going to be finding out or getting from the iphone 14 this year that's a good question so uh there's lots of rumors and stuff so first of all let's start with the fact that's probably going to be for models of two pro models a regular pro and probably a pro max regular of course i'm avoiding the last one because tiplinger's in the iphone the iphone 13 that's but they're [Music] i think we're kind of losing well i guess there's just a lot going on there's a lot going on over there and i'm sorry we lost you patrick who was talking about all the different models but you know reception everyone's probably on their iphones over there right um i i must be struggling but uh it was good to see folks over there and yeah this is like i haven't seen folks sitting at the theater before so this is gonna it's been a while it's been a while since 2019 you know um with other rumors i'm curious about i don't know about you justin but um there's a lot of talk about this always on display and the leaks we've seen or the the the expectations at least and the mock-ups show that uh we're gonna have a dim screen that still has color on it um and and i wonder what they're gonna talk about there by being able to have it in a way where it also preserves battery life yeah well i love the idea of an always-on display that has just a few little um pieces of information that you want to see when you're able to like just glance at your phone also i love the idea that like if you turn off the always on display do you get better battery life because i'm already doing that with my apple watch um so like i think there's like pros to both of that both of those if you're using it or not um also i just want to backtrack though a little bit bridget because what patrick was saying and i think it's important that we talk about are the models right there are like heavy rumors that the mini's going away which is really sad because while i don't have the phone i've always wanted the phone because i think it's nice to have that small form factor in fact i'd love a an iphone 14 pro mini but i just don't think that's happening this year um so what is expected is that we're gonna get we're going to keep the the normal size 6.1 inch iphone 14 13 to 14 and then we're going to be getting a larger version as well possibly called the iphone 14 plus or the iphone 14 max most people are assuming the plus we even have an image beachum if you don't mind putting that up of a case that says the iphone 14 plus and you know that just adds more credibility to that and that's going to be a 6.7 inch screen the same size as the iphone 13 pro max that uh currently is um now besides uh the the the the phones yes there are a lot of um possibilities like that always on display bridget that you were saying and possible upgrades to the cameras right yeah exactly like um there's always talk about cameras i'm i'm i'm worried and concerned about like okay well how good is the camera gonna be but also like is this gonna be a more expensive phone a lot of the buzz and talk from folks is like yes we're gonna be having a pro model that's might be a hundred dollars more at least that's what we're hearing from some analysts um and they're already so expensive but um in general by having like the better front-facing camera i think that'll be really interesting and i don't know the back will have more beef too like are we going to get 8k recording and how big is that camera bump going to be in the back because we've seen earlier vendors where they're like oh it's not going to be anything and then the later renders the later speculation is that no there's going to be a bump so what model is which are we going to be calling things plus on one side is the pro going to be called pro plus or pro pro max like like the the naming is is just messy so i'm there it's like what you said earlier there's so much this time around that i'm not quite sure from all the cheddar chatter like what exactly is gonna go down today yep and we're gonna and we're gonna know real soon um and then when it comes to processors uh rumors are saying that the iphone 14 will remain with the a15 processor and the pro versions will get that a16 processor so that's exciting um most rumors are saying that they'll remain with six gigabytes of ram earlier reports we're seeing eight gigabytes but it just seems um like most rumors are leaning toward that six gigabytes of ram as well let me invite that promotion display yeah oh yeah yeah maybe we'll get that promotion display on the on the 14 uh the basic the the lower models um that would be fantastic um i've been i've had the 12 pro and i haven't really been living with it any time i like pick up someone else's phone i'm like oh my god this this 120 hertz refresh rate it's so lovely so um i'm just excited to have that on whatever phone i get you know i got a big scratch on my screen so yeah i probably am looking at what this thing is going to look like but you know what's also interesting we're talking about the event theme we said it's the this is apple's far out event because the invitation i don't throw that up it shows the apple logo that's made of stars and we've heard for a while now these rumors that they're apple's working on some sort of way like a satellite connection for your phone that way you can make a phone call even if you have no cell reception that somehow a satellite up in the stars will be able to you know help you make those emergency calls when you need to whether when you're in remote areas but i i don't know if this is the event we're going to see that or the stars just mean like are we going to take more photos of stars what do you think justin oh bridget i have a lot to say about this so yeah the the theme is far out as you can see on the invite we got lots of stars and i'm wearing my spaceman on my shirt i've got the james webb telescope photo on my computer because i'm ready oh you are so themed oh yeah of course i got a dress for the occasion so i have a couple a couple ideas of what this could be one feels more realistic and that is an upgraded telephoto lens on the iphone 14. now currently on the iphone 14 pro and pro max we've got a three times optical zoom and then you look at other phones out there like the samsung galaxy s22 ultra say that 22 times fast um that has a three times optical uh telephoto lens and a 10 times which can like take beautiful photos of the moon um so maybe we'll be getting a much stronger telephoto lens one can only hope uh so so that's that's one thing and i feel like that's a very realistic um possibility second recently on august 25th t-mobile and spacex announced a brand new service that's going to be coming to t-mobile's customers that gives them the ability to get internet serv or or cell reception anywhere in the continental us even if they don't have cell phone tower service and this this is through spacex satellites now um that could be a like perfectly timed uh predecessor for this announcement that could be coming uh with the with the new iphone and the new apple watch maybe they are getting satellite capability to send texts which is what um t-mobile is offering uh by the end of next year's their plan so i mean that that service is called above and beyond we got far out i mean it's a perfect pair right so we'll see it's interesting coincidence we have to though talk about the apple watch because we are about 15 minutes till apple's event we have cena's lisa ida chico also at the apple event she's running around she's getting ready and she recorded this video for us ahead of time to preview what we may see with the apple watches stephen can you play that i'm here outside apple park where we're expecting to see three new apple watches today possibly the apple watch series 8 the series 8 pro and a new apple watch se so the biggest thing we're expecting to see from the series 8 based on the rumors is a new temperature sensor which might be able to detect if you have a fever the pro on the other hand is expected to have a much bigger screen and longer battery life and a more durable design and the apple watch se is expected to be an upgraded version of the cheaper apple watch that debuted in 2020. we don't really know much about what that might entail but we're hoping to find out later today i'm here outside apple park where we're expecting to see three new apple watch she's back thank you lisa um yeah apple watch i'm i'm very excited for these announcements like i said earlier specifically the apple watch pro right this this would be the biggest leap in apple watch since it's uh since its original release right we're gonna uh can we actually throw up those renders beach um let's throw up one of the cats oh wait we got scott here we got scott live mr apple watch mr editor at large he's at large at the apple event great view scott thank you thank you what are we i got the seat in the back we were talking about iphones we're just talking about apple watch what do you think is your biggest expectation with the apple watch and what else we could see so you know apple watch yeah we're expecting a new model the pro and apparently not only would it be more expensive but they have a temperature sensor maybe that's on the other models battery life is the key thing that i'm excited about and also can have a dedicated button for you know to attract the garmin crowd um it could really be focused maybe it has a satellite feature that we've been expecting on the new phones um it could really be about the outdoors element maybe it also has a health element like the fitbit sense um and i think that's the big thing airpods pro 2 or another thing that we're expecting better audio quality um you know like i cover ar vr i've been waiting to hear something about you know whether there'll be a headset i think it's too busy an event for something like that here although this background does look very 3d and um as far as ipads go you know it's just going to be some october event maybe which when ipad os hits i cover a lot of ipads a redesigned base ipad with usbc ipad pro i don't think any of that's going to be here but you know i do want to see the time bandits trailer that apple tv is close to anything scott i know we're getting so close to the event you mentioned temperature with the apple watch i want to ask you've been wearing this ring that does temperature checks the aura 3. you wrote all about it what has that been like having a device that that senses that how do you think apple is going to do a different twist with that skill that's a good question you know some performance have been saying that the temperature thing is going to sort of emerge for only a few features maybe uh women's fertility tracking um and you know maybe it's not for sickness detection that type of stuff i mean the problem with the sickness detection is that it's it's not absolutely guaranteed um you know your mileage may vary it doesn't have the type of like fba clearance so you know when apple wait for something like that or studies um you know it's a relative temperature difference on the blockchains so you know i can see that maybe my temperature relatively light up two degrees but i don't know what my actual temperature is so maybe that's something that they're putting a sensor on now but they're gonna do research on that for another couple of years let it trickle down into all the models by the way uh jason heiner is here too with zvnet and uh i don't even know if you can play anything future team so we're here keeping an eye sitting at the very back edge of the theater while the cnet team is somewhere down uh around there that's where i'm pointing yeah we were just talking to patrick yeah we saw lisa down there uh justin do you have any questions for scott before he has to go uh i guess get in the groove because we got like 10 minutes left yes scott so so you already touched upon ar vr it sounds like it's unlikely that we're gonna get that this year do you think that there will be any other special surprises that could come out any other things that have been like rumored about in the past that we could see today i know car we're all wondering about that i mean it would be fun if we would have checked out a car no i mean i don't think so but i do think that the satellite nissim stuff which we're expecting will be big uh is kind of on the carrier wonky side but the satellite thing is a new is new territory for phones and i feel like they make a big deal out of that i mean we talked about astrophotography things that have been on other phone models um are you curious to see a watch face store look they don't have a wash base store i feel like you need to have cool new watch faces all the time uh from lots of people or i do i feel like i get bored so i want to watch face store um that would be a cool surprise scott you have been on the case for them having a watch face store for the longest time and i hope it comes true for you today because that is the thing you've always been talking about it's so obvious they need to do it i mean why why just make a few curated brands you know don't have us like the special edition models you know let's get those watch faces happen scott i i wanted to touch on what you think apple needs to do today to really show that they are thinking about the future because sure we're always like okay iphone new iphone whoop-dee-doo but okay new apple watch sure but what does apple need to do to get people excited and get people showing that they are thinking about the future and not just kind of going and making just another new product for us to buy well i think it's a it's a careful dance because you know i think a lot of these products are very mainstream very reliable types of products and they want to make them you know for a large consumer base commodity products and so the future is interesting but if it's you know like with folding phones and other things there's always a dance of how experimental do you get before the stuff becomes you know not something people would want to get and so i think that's you know that's what you're going to see here is that like a few new features that they're going to aim that people want to use um you know and i think that the watch is the same thing a lot of that can be boring but they kind of bet that like it's going to be useful so you know they keep not taking the bait on doing some like big bold experimental type of thing and i think that that that holds here too um but at some point when that headset comes out we're gonna see something new and experimental and you know all the ar and other tools they've been doing that stuff has been baked in uh some of the ambient tech is baked in i think you got to look in the weeds for where some of that stuff is starting to emerge in the operating system and in the hardware scott we we have a bunch of people asking questions in our chat room and we got user calvin tan asking uh that or rather commenting too that he's interesting to figure out like how is this pro going to compete in the sport watch with players like garmin have you given thought to that yeah well you know i think it's going to try to be something that maybe think about the apple watch is that the connectedness and some of the music and other elements might be appealing um can it can advance and other features to close the gap um now the question too is the price i mean if this thing is 900 you're already dealing with some small subset of people that are going to be getting this i feel like the pro models of these devices this year might be the talk is they might be prettier and more expensive which is again like like a different difference in class so you have these high end things and you wait for them to trickle down i would love to see longer battery life but on a more affordable apple watch so i think you're going to see it reach specialty markets first who can afford it peloton people and people who have you know fancy gym memberships right let's talk about these airpods right because this was like this the the airpods too were seeming more likely than ever what do you think we're going to see with those what upgrades do we do we expect from that i think just better audio quality is the big thing we've been talking about better bluetooth connection you know the difference between airpod uh pros and airpods three i noticed the difference in action speed um and so i think they need to catch up on that which is not that exciting but also just you know keeping up on audio quality maybe reducing the size i don't know if they're gonna have the differences in fitness maybe there is a surprise with these um i think it'll be kind of interesting but you know also as david carney had pointed out outside uh the landscape is very competitive for headphones and you know there's even also the beats ones that apple makes um so i think you know you know how much do they say attuned to just trying to keep even a competitive and interesting product at a reasonable price versus um you know trying to look at the landscape run away on the headphone scene so to speak so i think that's what i think about with that i also got my arm is getting so tired i gotta sit down too and open my laptop thank you scott we're good we can chat forever uh we'll let you get ready before and lisa and everyone else who was there like it really just honestly warms my heart i just had to say that i know it's it's really nice it's back to to what i remember yeah it i felt the same and and and i i wonder how they're going to do this presentation today because you know it is so easy for apple to make these polished um i mean not easy to make them but it's easy for them to decide as a company we're just going to keep making polished uh you know videos that are pre-recorded and i wonder if there's going to be any mix of that today you know some pre-recorded some not or what exactly it is but by having them there as soon as the event's over there all these reporters will be running to get their hands on these products in the demo room and uh you know so obviously we're gonna have all that for you on our youtube channel as it's like a madhouse today i've just like seen every single thing that's gonna come out um i i was interested to hear him talk about the air pods because i'm a beats person it's just what i like i like i like my little color pizzazz and i like how it hooks on my ear but i want to see exactly what he said i want to see what apple is going to do to show us why it's worth going for the pro a little better um we haven't really seen uh new airpods pro in three years um i i don't know if any particular upgrades justin that you have been interested in because you do use them yeah there definitely are some upgrades on the beats side of things the beats fit pro um are a really good alternative to the airpods pro because they have the same h1 chip for connectivity um and i really like the fit and the sound quality so what i'm hoping is to see some of those features um or specifically the sound quality to come to the airpods pro i want to see um a better better sound quality there is a possibility that they'll receive an h2 chip which could help with sound quality and connection uh possibly upgraded bluetooth um most exciting feature that i'd like to see and it's very likely is a skin detector sensor so currently the air pods pro don't have that the air pods generation 3 do so what that will do is it will be even more accurate when you're taking your air pods in and out of your ear for them to detect that because i'm sure many people who have airpods pro like myself have noticed that like they'll still sometimes play when they're just out on your desk or in your hand well i guess that's kind of like your ear but they'll they'll play sometimes when they're out on my desk so that skin detector i really want to see that better sound quality and uh can we throw up there is a render of the case that shows like little um holes for speakers it should be a red picture beach uh a red case so what there's what rumors are saying is that there's a possible speaker that's gonna come onto the case that will let off some sort of sort of noise for helping you find your air pods um and the case hopefully the air pods are in them now we already see this feature on the galaxy buds and um i have some lg earbuds that also have this and they give off like a little chirp chirp chirp so they can help find it so you know i think it's about time and and uh makes sense that they'll have these as well now um i would love to see usbc i don't think we're getting that this year i don't think we're getting on the iphone this year there there it is uh but what i do think is that and what rumors are saying is that we will get an a usbc port for both the airpods and an iphone in 2023 even more likely with the eu ruling of like making it pretty mandatory so that's exciting less cables uh i'm all for that all right we got like a minute before i want to rapid fire quick couple comments uh we got a comment uh in the from the chat room uh shaderfox uh he said two years ago we had blood oxygen levels for the watch i think even a big feature this time uh yeah i think it's gonna be temperature everyone was talking about uh tatiana says hope we get a variety of new colors for the phone it looks like maybe purple's in the mix i don't know if pink is still gonna be in the mix based on the reports but we'll have to say it makes me nervous uh steve iphone14 how they keep coming up with these names i know they're just so creative right um sham it uh do you feel phones have peaked you can't upgrade more than cameras i know that's what apple's gotta sell a song because i feel the same way it's like you gotta have something good there but people do need new phones every once in a while um and then last uh we got alfonso riviera matazuma a junior what a name that's delicious i know it's early but i am curious if they will touch on the concept of what they're going to do with the apple car i hope they do have one more thing whatever that one more thing is um now i don't think they will just because it's far out instead of like on the road yeah i i asked but dreaming i know i know it's like it's like we all want that one little what if what if moment and i think if they're going to have a what if moment it's got to be a tease about vr future you know or at least at least what apple could do in that future i'm going to say before we start because it's going to start any minute now we can't stream the keynote live apple doesn't lit us but we are still here following along don't access out because we're going to keep my own dynamic island of cnet crew mr justin tech lexi sabines welcome welcome um we're going to give you a recap of reactions to all this stuff apple announced but uh we're just gonna dwell maybe a bit on the dynamic island uh let's start with you justin what what was standing out the most to you well what was sending out the most to me um that apple watch ultra um i guess we've been calling it the wrong name the entire time um i mean they were taking it scuba diving they were taking it um climbing getting it dirty the color oh my god the orange color of it um was really pretty um it was a little less expensive than i expected but also still like not cheap um but yeah that that watch um super pretty the possible 60 hours of battery life that's gonna come later this fall uh and it's like special low power mode um yeah that that watch just like caught my eye it had a lot of a lot of features that we hadn't even discussed like the um like a stronger speaker that lets off this loud siren if you're lost um and then not to mention the uh satellite ability although that's actually that's iphone so never mind um but the combination of those two if you're lost um you're gonna get you're gonna get found um and then what else i mean this the screen size it was a four or it's a 49 millimeter casing i'm not sure if that means it's a 49 millimeter screen or 47 with the case i'll need to be corrected on that but um very large screen and all those loops very cool how they created three different types of bands specifically for different types of activities whether you're underwater you're running or you're on a trail um and then the night mode with the the how you can like spin the dial and it takes you to like more of a red screen that's going to be better in certain um types of activity at certain i guess when you're in what underwater or um in the dark um and then the super bright tooth out up to 2000 nit display um you know i think that there were a lot of surprises for this one and also i'm very curious to see how cnet decides to cover this product um we're gonna need to get some scuba divers we're gonna need to uh find some interesting ways that the three of us um and our colleagues lexi are you getting yes i'm thinking about like lexi is thinking oh no she's got to get a scuba diving who's getting the car crash i mean let's table that for another discussion um about how we're going to test that i was so excited uh about the all of the different features that we are getting um on this apple watch ultra the name yes definitely we did not expect it to be called the ultra and it is definitely a lean away from apple's naming convention so it definitely feels like uh it's an entirely new category for the company to be entering into i think you know it was interesting what justin you were saying about all of the different features and form fact yes this is a 49 millimeter casing this is going to be a very large watch this is going to be up there with the likes of the garmin phoenix series specifically which i think is the watch that apple is pretty much has eyes on and is targeting with the rugged features and all of the extra workout capabilities and so on that are on this watch so if i was garmin right now i would probably be a little bit worried about the pricing of this watch as well as the ability obviously of the apple watch to have that seamless connectivity to the iphone and uh there's just so many other features to dive in and to test diving in was a pun specifically there i used but yes scuba diving though is an interesting one to see because a lot of you know specific dive watches exist for that market but not necessarily so much with the smart elements so that will be really really fun to test and there's just so much more um on board that we didn't talk about including a compass that we're seeing on screen now um you know improvements to things like the skin temperature sensor or additions to the skin temperature sensor that we've seen on the new series 8 as well lots lots of lots of things to talk about here but i think you know we're really excited because this is a brand new product for apple but in terms of what you're at home watching and excited about maybe it's not the apple watch ultra maybe it's something like the iphone 14 i think we should kind of give it to that because that's the big one that i think everyone was excited about and talk about the 14 and obviously the new pro models i'm so excited about the camera technology on board on the pro edition of models and i did get a a little bit scared when i saw the flashing up of the original 14 and 14 um the 6.7 inch size of the the new 14 as well and i was like oh no the notch stays but yes it does stay on those two versions uh that are the less expensive iphone 14 and then the pro models get the thank you bridget for introducing us as the dynamic island they get the pill shaped cutout with the dynamic island that looks really interesting richard what did you make of of uh the dynamic island was it an ibiza dj set or was it a new reality tv show or a new tech feature i think apple really went to town with naming this wildly i need this as like a band t-shirt for sure like like dynamic island what's rock on um okay first off lots of emotions i'm on a little roller coaster of sorts because when you're seeing all the rumors you're like oh what's this pill gonna look like at first it's like oh it's animated they made it almost like yeah like animated character right you know depending on what app you're in it's popping up it's showing the different uh useful features and then they show it it's just sitting there as a big old pill cut out during a video you're watching oh gross i did not like how it just interrupts what you're looking at so you know what i will have to just take a breath and realize that it is at least a better camera inside and it has better low light uh being able to take better photos for your front-facing camera ah but in general yes it is definitely the thing everyone's gonna be talking about uh let's let's go over really quick um uh the that we're seeing here this is the pro there's a pro and a pro max don't get confused in the names because the one with the notch that was the iphone 14 and the iphone 14 plus but the pro here is uh definitely has a lot of new features um uh uh aside from dynamic island um you're gonna be able to have is always on display because they have a refresh of just one hertz with this low power mode it kind of like dims your wallpapers while keeping them in color um they were talking about the a16 bionic chip and all the all the great features you get with it like more memory bandwidth 48 megapixel camera as also on this one so it's got this 65 larger sensor like so you were talking about that how this camera is beefy um and just three times improvement in low light overall and all of that at the same price we heard all this speculation from analysts saying this is gonna be more expensive they kept it at starting at a thousand dollars um and that's gonna be pre-order friday out september 16th the one that's not out right away those are your cheaper bottles your iphone 14 your iphone 14 plus they're getting the a15 bionic chip that's what was in last year's best model um and uh they're gonna have um you know also a lot of great new features with their camera both of them are getting this new stabilization mode i really like uh to see that um and both you know they have this crash detection there's satellite emergency sos in the new iphones and on the whole suite of them um being able to uh it's fascinating um i i before i get into the satellite i will say the price for that 14 that starts at 7.99 that's the same price as your you know ultra apple watch starting place but that large display the plus for the iphone 14 plus um that one i believe is starts at 8.99 pre-orders this friday for the whole suite but the iphone 14 plus is the one that's going to take a little longer to come out that comes out on october 7th but yeah let's jump into satellite detection uh with emergency sos how you how normally if you ever wanted to use a satellite to communicate this is a very expensive very complicated thing you have to invest in uh hikers uh uh who are outdoorsy kind of know about that this whole world is a little complicated but they've just built it in uh but and then they have the software that helps you point your phone at the satellite to kind of establish a connection and what was also interesting is that because the communication isn't just like a smooth cell phone call they're gonna be giving you quick hit questions where are you what's the situation who's hurt are you in a cave are you in water and they're going to send that as a text message to a emergency group and if that group like the 9-1-1 dispatchers so to speak if they can't handle text messages apple has relay centers are these staffed by apple employees had a third party all these questions i have but they're going to call on your behalf um and and so that is going to be a huge selling point i think just to have that little extra boost and not have to pay for a subscription service to have satellite coverage yeah that's a that's a really really cool feature um the fact that they built their custom like custom components and software into the phone to to do that aside from emergency sos the um a big a big update is the e sim the fact that there's no more physical sim card in the phone which like if you're someone who's bought an iphone in the last like six years you've definitely or any phone for that matter like having sim card issues and trying to like switch carriers has been like the most annoying thing or at least it has for me um the fact that no no no physical sim card you can have multiple phone numbers and multiple sim e-sims like um the ability to have multiple carriers on your phone that's pretty awesome and back to something um i believe it was bridget who you mentioned the new stabilization mode which is called action mode now that's going to be coming to both the iphone 14 and the pro models and this the video that apple showed were you know runners running along a trail and it being so smooth and the fact that whoever is holding that iphone that stabilization was giving you like gimbal level stabilization it looked so smooth and as like a filmmaker and someone who loves creating content for cnet and and uh you know doing a lot of fitness videos i can't wait to get on and get on the road and start testing that out specifically so lexi let me know if you need me um let's come up with some fun stuff to test that out that's a very exciting a very exciting feature and then crash detection which is coming to the apple watch is also coming to both of the um both of the phones and that's a super interesting feature the fact that they're adding both those sensors uh the high dynamic range gyroscope and the dual core accelerometers that can that can um that can uh read up to like 256 gs of force um i mean that's going to save lives uh we've seen it in some other videos that we've come out with on cnet one video that i came out with recently the apple watch saved my life you should check it out um and then having this new life-saving feature um on both the watches and the phones is gonna be is gonna probably have a huge impact definitely the other thing though i i really was impressed by was the always-on display and that was something that i think was rumored for many many moons and especially from all of the sort of hints that we've got in ios 16. i think the implementation that apple's done here is going to be really interesting i also have many questions about battery life however dropping the display to one hertz to kind of achieve that is going to be hopefully not really impacting battery life at all interestingly we didn't see any kind of real numbers from apple in terms of battery life it was simply that all-day claim i'm not sure if this spec sheet that you're seeing on screen here really has uh yeah it just says all-day battery life so of course there's going to be a lot of battery testing that we are going to do to see what sort of improvements there are we'll obviously be looking and seeing if there are kind of mentions and sort of tear downs of battery capacities as well which is something interesting as well to look at yeah they're always on display and being able to actually dynamically show that wallpaper and just sort of dim the display to be able to see almost in in its entirety just by also being able to maintain things like skin tone accuracy especially if you have those portrait mode background faces that's going to be nice to see also going to be interesting to compare it to the android side and how android implements it you know for example on some samsung phones they're always on display is a little bit more basic so to see side by side how apple and the android side are going to implement it is going to be another fun comparison to do but we need to talk about this dynamic island you know naming aside the actual functionality of how this is actually going to be surfacing things like alerts as well as being able to kind of show like an active status of certain apps say like the music player for example or even an active call and then being able to kind of take up a little bit more of the top of the screen when you touch into it be able to find out more information without taking over or opening up a brand new app it's just going to appear dynamically at the top of the screen i thought this was a really nice implementation and what intrigues me is how third-party apps are going to plug into this as you can see in the footage that we saw in the keynote right now on screen there's basically uh the new true depth camera it's using a 30 less area than the previous three depth camera on the pro series and of course there's the proximity sensor just behind the display now so for that face id and but really that that sort of pill-shaped notch that's the dynamic island like am i going to get used to saying that i don't know you two are i'm calling it the pill i'm calling it [Music] yeah it's hard for me to get used to i don't know if you're watching at home and you have thoughts about the dynamic island like please let us know please throw us some comments on that i want to hear what you guys have to say um that's what i call spin um you know where if you're gonna leave a pill shaped uh black nudge on the phone or just basically move the notch into you know a little lower just call it the dynamic island and normal normal no i will say though like that name aside it is awesome like if you're going to have an a pill shape on the phone then use it and i mean i i honestly like i like my mouth was like jaw dropped the whole time they were showing that i was like oh wow that's really cool it's like this like ev ever evolving you know piece and i like uh face id you got your lift coming you've got your audio playing you've got you're using your tap at the mta or for the train um i i can't wait to see this i mean honestly we could do a video on the dynamic island like it's so dynamic you know uh i'll give it a chance because i did like how like i it was so much better than i thought i thought this was going to be like this ugly static bar and here it is coming to life being animated but then at what point will other apps just start you know kind of messing with it like am i going to see that like duolingo green owl like just popping in harassing me all the time on that dynamic bar like what exactly is that going to look like beyond just you know directions and time and small alerts um uh but yeah it's better than what it could have been so i'm glad they got creative with it but it is something that it's it's almost like um they like took the concept of that of that macbook touch bar and was like let's let's make a little iphone you know kind of animated version of that uh but i aside from that there's a lot there's just a lot going on today that is just very different um the apple watch especially lexi i wanted to ask you a little bit about because not only are there multiple versions and going to that not pro but the ultra it's like very um i don't really need all that stuff but it seemed kind of nice you know but uh but but there was a lot of features that are also just on the new eight series that we really didn't yeah here we're looking at like that's that ultra with the with the grip you know in different watch bands but the series 8 too just had so many new features uh the the whole reason for temperature sensing yeah sure we heard about that in the in the reports but i didn't think we were going into ovulation land like i didn't think we were going into women's health that fascinated me because if any of you guys are watching at home and don't really know it's kind of a hard thing to track for women all right so apple's definitely you know pulling some strings here saying like hey we're here for this demographic and and for this issue doesn't get talked about a lot lexi can you can you give me your your your thoughts on all this yeah i was surprised that apple really leaned in heavily to the menstrual cycle tracking and ovulation tracking features that skim temperature sensors kind of unlock really need to make this very clear is that many other wearables also have skin temperature sensing they can also claim to track ovulation things like the aura ring fitbit doesn't necessarily directly track your site your ovulation for example but you can use it if you kind of know what you're looking for in order to detect fluctuations and changes in your body temperature or skin temperature technically because i can't measure like you know core temperature that's not possible from your skin yeah but apple leaning into you know the women's health features you know i i liked hearing about it but i think in terms of a practical sense maybe it would have been great to mention that but also the ability that maybe this temperature sensor could indicate changes in you know your body after say like doing a workout how you're recovering after you know an illness maybe you are getting sick or ill because you know over the past few years temperature tracking has obviously been a really big feature for a lot of wearables and and to sort of not see any mention of like maybe it can detect if you know you're coming down with a fever even if it's not like an alert or something it could just be you know you just monitoring your levels i guess potentially you'll be able to do that but finding out a little bit more detail about that i think is you know something that i'm going to be diving into after we jump off and i'm going to be looking at all the spec sheets and obviously all the testing to kind of find out a bit more about how this skin temperature is actually going to help beyond just women's health tracking um the other things on the series 8 you know that were kind of surprising for me was the things in terms of the car crash detection that we mentioned the improved gyroscope and accelerometer i kind of wonder if any of those improved sensors are also going to be helpful for kind of like workout tracking accuracy as well not just necessarily car crash detection because the apple watch has you know just implemented uh last year things like cycling detection maybe it's going to improve automatic workout detection thanks to these new sensors who knows but hopefully it's not just necessarily for car crash detection as useful and as effective as that will be hopefully again you'll never have to use it but that was something that again more needs to be like dived into more the one thing though so we've got the same sort of look and feel as the series seven and you know it looks like it's very similar screen sizes obviously the blood oxygen sensor the same ecg fast charging capabilities and all of the workout uh features that we've already kind of know were on the way to other apple watches from watch os 9 and that's coming to other apple watches as well the one thing is battery life can we just talk about battery life on the apple watch for a second because it's still only 18 hours and i know that there is now an extended what's it called it's a low power mode that's potentially able to extend the battery to 36 hours from say a full charge and still have things like your full detection and emergency services and things like that 36 hours it's just not enough for me you know you too like it's it's just not enough especially you know considering the price of the watch um and i i just i can't get over the fact that i have to charge my apple watch every single day um especially do you want to do sleep tracking yeah they were they were especially leaning into the fact that you should be wearing your apple watch at night ladies so you can know when you're ovulating like like okay well um you know you got to be on top of your charging what in the middle of your day like that's that's wild um there we had a lot of comments in the chat about the apple watch series eight most people were kind of um upset that it was like the same body more or less you know like like kind of look the same um but then there were obviously we have new colors like people are saying uh lance elantra said the red one looks so great i'm reading off some of the comments now we were able to pull um and uh and karina sanchez castillo says they are at a good price um but uh people were saying that you know they wanted like this this flatter apple watch um and uh i would say user gareth ross uk interesting point here about the naming of the watches uh pointed out ultra name is bad explorer will be much better and more fitting and clear to the consumer and i have to agree but yeah everything's pro ultra plus it's like empty but explore really does capture what they're going for people with with these expensive hobbies going out and really getting in into the wilderness so to speak um uh and i don't think i'd use all of those but it they clearly are going after people who say like my husband who says i will not get an apple watch he's always told me i want to get his opinion after this i won't get an apple watch because i want an actual rugged outdoors watch that has things and whatnot so i'm going okay i wonder if all these features are going to be appealing to a different consumer obviously but yeah it's the same prices as an iphone 14. justin um what's your take on on uh on the naming on the the apple watch eight ultra um [Music] i i agree with the comment that um that that person had left where explore does resonate more with me um ultra doesn't really tell me much i mean it tells me it's in like an ultra wide i it doesn't tell i mean explorer tells me that i'm going near and far wherever you are i'm sorry um to to go on adventures you know and and that i can get this thing dinged up or or rather it won't really um that it's resistant to to exploring um so that does resonate more with me maybe the naming is more so that people who don't explore are still considering it um but i mean when you see all the video that they showed off you know alongside this watch i mean people are taking this deep deep deep underwater um like in fact there are abilities that allow it to like switch to different settings um based off of how far like below water you go um and i mean this is just this is built for people who are going in far out places without reception you know or or dangerous places that there there's a reason there's a built-in siren with loud speakers on it um in order to you know call out for help uh which they showed like a great piece on um in their keynote um yeah before this i was i was i know i i i feel like they take it all in but before this i was thinking that i was probably going to be persuaded to get this now it's called ultra watch uh because i wanted something durable i mean forget climbing mountains or whatever whatever that was i i'm i'm dealing with toddlers and and i'm always in a situation where i just want a rugged watch that will last me a long time but now i'm thinking it's a little overkill right you know 7.99 starting price maybe i don't need all that so i'm kind of actually backing away from the idea that that rugged maybe isn't you know practical in all situations um but we do have to still hit on yeah yeah we still gotta completely agree i was ready okay yeah yeah airpods yeah there's just so much to go over yeah which can be charged with an apple watch charger pretty cool i did like that i like that a lot um uh i would say um uh there are some questions we have so we'll go over some people's questions about the airpod pro 2 um and some comments folks had lance lance alelantra kind of upset that they still had stems some thought it wouldn't have stems yeah i heard a lot of speculation maybe the shape would change but it looks like it's roughly the same shape sam wolf sam wolfie uh wow among dang time they added that volume feature yeah we saw some talk about how there was a lot of different um uh like you could just kind of touch the side and and change the volume pretty easily and carina sanchez castillo said there should be made of different colors for the airpods yeah where's the pizzazz i i'm with you on that lexi um you are always testing buds out what kind of stood out to you in this presentation yes all the buds so you know i think you mentioned this in the pre-show it has been since 2019 when the original airpods pro were released and in that time there's been uh it's kind of interesting the way that apple has done a lot of kind of behind the scenes iterative updates through firmware to kind of bring a few a few features to them without necessarily needing to do a full hardware overhaul like they did today we've seen spatial audio back in 2020 you know obviously head tracking and dynamic movements to enable spatial audio as well as the hidden gyroscopes and accelerometers in the airpods now with the new airpods pro you know there's that new h2 chip they've got a new low distortion audio driver and i'm really hoping that it is going to deliver an improvement to sound quality you know part of the airpods pro the sound stage is quite neutral i would say and it's quite balanced but it's not really the most vibrant or dynamic listening experience especially compared to some newer buds that have come out especially like last year's sony w f 1000 x mark 4's oh the name is so confusing i'm just so glad that apple has a little bit more simple naming conventions than sony but those earbuds sound really good um and obviously there are new editions of the galaxy buds pro 2 or 2 pro buds pro 2 i think anyway names aside and the pixel the new pixel buds pro as well that have had a lot more improvements to things like the sound quality of course so the real proof is going to be in the pudding with the airpods pro i am disappointed that there was no kind of mention of things like an onboard equalizer and that's something like at least in a first party app or the kind of settings within ios it's one of my big wishlist items that i really want the airpods pro to have and i don't think we're getting at this time so back to tweaking the eq in spotify and apple music i guess um but there you go we also didn't hear mention of the rumored lossless audio streaming through potentially apple's losses audio codec now this is to deliver kind of higher fidelity quality sound with bluetooth streaming you just don't have that bandwidth to deliver that higher quality audio file and you know other manufacturers especially on android have kind of worked out ways to deliver higher quality audio using wireless you know bluetooth technology in different iterations and different codecs so we didn't hear mention of that maybe it's in the spec sheet somewhere and i'll go dig in and it just was a little bit too obtuse you know considering apple music has lots of streaming give it to me on the airpods we're close to it anyway um the other thing though that i am excited about that was on my wish list for the airpods pro is extra small ear tip size oh okay there's now four ear tip sizes so the first generation airpods pro only had small medium and large which is fine if you have a more conventional ear shape but everybody's ears are so dramatically different and a lot of people had issues with the silicon tips on the first airpods pro myself included and you know some either they were too big for their ears or too small for their ears so now that there's an extra small size i'm excited and i'm hoping this is going to actually help them stay in my ears a little bit better when doing things like being more active working out even just walking you know and six hours of battery life good not great i could always want a little bit more but that being said the airpods pro that i have been using since 2019 the battery life is still pretty decent i've only probably dropped one hour in total of total battery capacity you know so it's not five hours it's well not four and a half hours it's more like three and a half hours which i think is still pretty good for three-year-old earbuds but i am looking forward to getting my ears on these uh pun totally intended i'm sorry i can't help it with the puns okay with uh dynamic island i think you're you're fine with with all your jokes because apple just out dad everybody um with with all the cheesiness um uh that that is pretty good battery life uh i want to go around the horn with with your final thoughts and also while we were chatting my husband's watching the show i think because he just texted me that as a hiker he wanted a watch that stays on more than 36 hours in the woods well they say they have that coming they have the the whole 60-hour feature coming soon we'll see how that works out but around the horn starting with justin what what's your overall thought or or or something that is kind of sticking with you after coming away from watching all this because it was a lot my overall thought i mean i think that the implications apple continues to put so much thought and detail into safety and health and wellness and i mean they just went even further and i think that that's an exciting area to keep to keep watching especially with emergency sos with crash detection um to continue to see kind of where they take all their products in that direction is is exciting for me and um emergency sos i want to see kind of where they take that uh two years for free and then we'll find out where that kind of goes but i i'm yeah i'm very eager to um try all these health and safety features out and make some videos that are focused on all that and um show them to you what about you well i think for me the biggest uh the biggest sort of surprise was was price actually in a lot of this at least u.s pricing now i understand for my friends overseas especially australia you know pricing is i i don't know the current pricing there but the u.s pricing at least uh you know pretty much on the mark with what we saw last year given the current economic climate i'm really glad that we didn't see dramatic price increases there i think the apple watch ultra it'd be hard to keep saying that name instead of apple watch pro which i think it should have been called pro anyway or explore it naming aside 799 dollars i think that puts it squarely in the field of the more rugged smart watches from likes of polar and garmin which this is really going to go after so that was really exciting to see it was a competitive price and i think just to circle back quickly to kind of the two kind of types of people that i think would be attracted to the ultra bridget and you were talking about you know your husband and you also looking for you know wanting to have a more rugged watch yes i think there's that market and there's also people who are not necessarily ultra marathoners and runners and hikers and divers that's the obvious other market but people who also want more battery life might also gravitate to this watch and for 799 dollars for 36 hours of battery life with the 60 extended maybe that's enough you know they don't necessarily mind about all the other sports and tracking features they they just want a watch with a little bit more battery life and they might have originally been spending money to get to the stainless steel version of the apple watch series 7 or series 8 before which kind of gets up to that price you get the increased durability a little bit more battery life yeah i think that might be a really compelling proposition for people who not necessarily caring about the the super marathon you know extreme sports features too so yeah the one thing is airports bro the second generation i kind of wish that they were 199 especially given their feature set and the competitive landscape but apart from that i'm just going to keep harping on about the dynamic island and love the functionality and features can't stand the name we'll see in a year's time if i i'm still rambling on about dynamic island oh the names apple come up with i mean i mean i mean even even um god ultra it feels a little like um like we're going into like what's what's next for apple and names like we're going into beer territory like like we're gonna have iphone light iphone ultra apple ultra um uh great points though about the price i did think that that ultra watch was going to be more expensive considering the demographic they might have been targeting but um it's still pretty pricey though of course and and justin what you said about having apple focus on safety we even had a comment about that or two in the chat we had ahmed izanawi said quote i think they should have called it get lost instead of far out because everything was about getting yourself into trouble and apple does have a way of uh being like come for us we'll help you save your life and and yes they're they're very good at that messaging um i think this is where we gotta wrap it because today we're gonna have to go over and download all of this um and and really dive into what all these little features are that does it for us at see that i want to thank
