Sarah McBride DNC delegate from Delaware and the highest ranking elected transgender official in the United States is on the verge of breaking a significant glass ceiling with a track record that includes being the first openly transed person to work in the White House during the Obama Administration McBride has been a key figure in American politics advocating for crucial issues such as Paid Family Leave reproductive freedom and gun safety born and raised in Delaware McBride became interested in politics at a young age preferring to read about Harry Truman rather than Harry Potter at 25 she became the first transperson to speak at the Democratic National Convention 3 years later she was elected to the state senate making history once again it's hard to be what you don't see says McBride reflecting on the importance of representation in government her candidacy is not just an attempt to make history it is a mission to ensure that all voices in Delaware are heard in June 2023 McBride announced her candidacy for Delaware's lone vacant seat in the House of Representatives following representative Lisa blunt Rochester's decision to run for the Senate this announcement was followed by a wave of threats a sad reminder of the dangers she faced Es as a transgender woman in politics McBride is no stranger to adversity I've never had a job where I didn't receive death threats she comments casually but for her the risk is part of the struggle I came to the conclusion that if I didn't run for office because of that risk then they would win she asserts her campaign focuses on key issues for Delaware voters affordable housing child care and reprod productive rights her work in the state senate has already demonstrated her ability to bring together different sectors around common causes for example she garnered the support of major labor unions and the State Chamber of Commerce for a paid family leave Bill in the September 10th primaries McBride hopes to win the support of Delaware's Democratic voters I'm not running to be a transgender member of Congress she says firmly I'm running to be Delaware's member of Congress who works on every issue that matters [Music] her campaign has garnered National support raising $750,000 in the second quarter of 2024 the most Ever Raised by a candidate for Delaware's house seat although much of that money comes from out of state McBride insists her focus is on Delaware's needs the power of our proximity can open some of the most closed hearts and Minds she says referring to her ability to work with those who disagree with her although she knows she will will face opposition McBride is determined to make a difference in Washington in this video we'll explore Sarah McBride's path to Congress the challenges she has faced and her hopes for the future her story is a testament to the power of resilience and commitment in the fight for [Music] equality thank you for watching this video don't forget to subscribe to our Channel like the video and turn on the little bell for more vial Buzz news see you in the next video
