Why Bungie Dropped Last Gen For "Rise of Iron" DLC - E3 2016 Interview

and get the iron Galler horn I want to thank this guy flying down all the way from Seattle early just to be with us uh of course here to tell us a little bit more about Destiny rise of iron his bunge game director Chris uh Barrett Chris uh I really appreciate you taking the time to fly down I know you guys are very busy working on first of all the uh the shirt is pretty insane how do I get one of those well I'm sure we can work something out okay but but the people watching the bung store yeah we have it up on bu store y you can pick it up uh right now awesome fantastic so big reveal for you guys obviously uh last week with uh rise of iron big stream everyone was kind of wanting to know about the game uh now one thing we should say to people is that the game is not here at E3 right right exactly so you guys announced it last week you talked a lot about it there isn't going to be Hands-On at E3 but uh we do have a look at the trailer and you brought actually some really cool exclusive concept art um for the game that uh we we haven't seen before so we'll take a look at some of that but tell us about you know Destiny was really this shared World shooter the approach you guys had to the game and expansions and whatnot I mean you're sort of you're writing the book as you go I think on sort of how to uh you know give the player base new content and whatnot you've had a little bit of a reset here being able to come back with uh rise of iron later this year I'm sure there were a lot of talks inside of the team about what do we do what do players want um from this expansion what did you really zero in on as sort of the the focus for this expansion yeah so um there's a lot I mean Destiny is a huge world there's a lot of really interesting stories there's a lot of characters there's a lot of Worlds that are really interesting and so we wanted to take something that players were really familiar with which is the iron Banner tourament that they've been playing since the beta um and they've uh and dive deeper into that lore um so we wanted to bring uh forward the character Lord Saladin really dive into his backstory um learn more about all these weapons that players have uh um been familiar with in the iron banner and sort of uh yeah expand the world we want to make a new uh brand new place for players to explore uh they've been super hungry for Content so we want to give them everything in this release we want you know new weapons new new uh new Zone to explore uh yeah new characters all kinds of stuff that stuff uh players are hungry for you know they're hungry for a lot of stuff uh I mean there are so many choices and you know you guys I think really try and listen to the fans um in terms of what they want although they have that sort of insatiable appetite for more and more content um so the expansion you know tell us you revealed it last week where is it in development right now I mean yeah I mean we're uh polishing it up we're working you know uh there's a whole team of uh awesome people back at home uh you know busy uh working right now while we're at E3 um so we're play Tes we just had a big play test uh uh at the studio um this past week okay um so that was great get uh everybody at Bungie really loves to play the game as well so they're giving us tons of feedback and you know we're iterating on it right now but uh it's getting close it's uh it's super fun already so yeah it must be interesting for you guys to be you know building this new content bit still maintaining the game every day and and how do you s do you have kind of like a live team and then you have a team working on this and I mean it's obviously been disclosed that you guys are working on other things down the road I mean how do you sort of apportion all the resources of Bungie to to make this yeah we have uh multiple teams inside the studio and uh yeah there's a dedicated team just thinking uh uh about the live game right now you know making uh tweaks to the current uh you know current balance for example thinking about new events like you know things like Festival the lost and you know these sort of timely events and also uh um you know expansion packs like uh you know the expansion like rise of iron so yeah and then we have teams you know sort of working on a little more future stuff um but uh yeah it's it's uh it's always challenge is it's a huge game we've got a big you know big Studio but uh we have a lot of uh you know super talented people trying to you know trying to expand the game as quickly as we can yeah and you guys knew I think when you start on this you were signing up for a decade of building the game and and all the different elements to it so I'm sure you know that's the thing is the game that people will be playing obviously later this year is vastly sort of improved and differentiated from what originally shipped to I'm sure overall yeah we're always uh listening to fans playing the game ourselves like trying to make the game as uh good as we can possibly make it and I think uh players will uh really enjoy you know what we've done with rise of iron um I think there's a lot of stuff players have been asking for that I think we're going to deliver what's the one thing that you think uh is going to be most pleasing to your your fan base uh I really think uh you know getting a whole new Zone to explore I think uh you know it's got us you know a big chunk of new content I think that player players have really been you know wanting that so there's a lot of a lot of great new Secrets new new areas to explore that kind of stuff yeah all right well uh rise iron we know is coming out this fall right yep September 20th September 20th and coming for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One audiences yep all right and so the current and the current people that have current gen they're not going to be able to get it is that right uh right y just on the um PS4 and Xbox one right and what is that that's just because the content you sort of feel like at some point you have to be able to kind of move yeah we want to make sure the uh you know Destiny is as good as it can possibly be means uh you know looking at which consoles we're currently releasing for and stuff like that so yeah know it makes sense at some point everyone has to upgrade and there's never better time because these machines are cheaper
