Interview with the cast of Rebel Ridge currently playing on Netflix.

[Music] [Music] hi hi hey how are you good good I don't hear the voice of God we're ready to go guys all right I guess we are kathia woods with the Philadelphia triban how are you today good how you doing excellent excellent um everybody's looking great on this lovely day we appreciate [Music] okay we love to see it you know just when we thought we had you figured out here you come guns out weapons loaded let's do it talk about how much fun was this for you because you know obviously we know that you can act but this is a this is a different type of acting very physical talk about the preparation for this firstly I appreciate you um yeah I mean this was you know we've spoken about it extensively um and I talk about it a lot you know it's not every day that a script of this caliber uh crosses your desk or appears in your email inbox right so when an opportunity like this presents itself um um I grasp it with both hands I don't let go and I pour myself into it I pour myself into the process I pour myself into the community and the opportunity to collaborate with these beautiful artists that I had the privilege of uh collaborating with um you know it wasn't easy to uh achieve many of the things that um I believe we did in this film but I'm I'm I re I'm really grateful for everyone who poured their expertise and their knowledge into me for me to at least give it my best shot you know in in being this equally physically intelligent individual and emotionally intelligent individual in one combined person um so that was that's that's been something that's been really wonderful about this for me um especially as you know I remember at the very early point of my career it was highlighted to me my height it was highlighted to me my my width and and that I would probably get typ car so when opportunities like this come about where you can present physicality with emotional intelligence and prove those comments wrong I love those opportunities you know so all good things and and deeply grateful and Sophia we would be neglectful if we didn't talk about your character you know our girl is trying to do right and they just will not let her live you know what I mean and talk about that because we don't talk enough about how people use you know she's trying to stay sober she's trying to stay in the moment to get her daughter back but we don't talk enough about how people use the system to try to hinder the progress of recovering at ad talk about what it was like to play someone like that and to show a Different Light to such a character yeah thank you for this question because I it is that's what one of the reasons I was really drawn to this script like Erin said you don't get scripts like this every day you know it's lucky when they come across once in a lifetime it's an action film but at the heart it's about complicity and it's about broken systems and what an individual can do to help fix that system and I think for Summer she is a person like so many Americans where she's on her back foot you know she's just trying to stay afloat she's just grasping at straws trying to get back her life back on track and I think given those circumstances of her life and doing I'm trying not to give away too much of the film but what she puts on the line she she chooses to sort of forfeit or throw in the balance her her future her physical well-being her job her family all of that to bring light to the corruption that the this web of corruption in the town and I think specifically for addicts and people who struggle that's a system too you know there's J has a whole backstory of Summer that isn't necessarily in the script that we developed and worked on together but I think talking about addiction and and not bringing shame to it I think that's there's this really beautiful scene between summer and Terry where she comes clean and I think having an ally you know summer is an ally but Terry is also an ally and I think um being able to be honest about what you're going through and having a system in place to help you because there are so many people just fall and there there are no um there are no Nets to catch them and I think a lot of people who watch this film will see themselves in summer and see that struggle and how one misstep you're down on your back and you can't get back up but she still chooses to do the right thing despite despite that and I I think that's why I find her so brave is that she really puts it all on the line to do what's right and that is the power I think we're told that as an individual or as a small person or as a civil court clerk or just a regular everyday person you can't make a difference either in your own life or in the system at large and I don't believe that and summer doesn't believe that either she gets up on her own two feet and she's like I'm gonna do what's right and it's the admirable thing to do and I hope that's how people walk out of this movie is knowing like I might be small but I can be Mighty absolutely absolutely thank you so much guys for your time and best of luck with the project thank you thank you K would F out your tribute hi dog well hello don't you look great I was about to say the same thing about you appreciate that long time fan pleasure speaking with you what is a nice man like you do playing such an awful guy oh just to give everybody a thrill and have them scratch their head and go what in the hell is he doing I say this I mean we've you know a lot of people know you from a certain genre but you've always you know looking over your career you've never shied away from playing you know characters that are challenging talk about what attracts you to those types of roles as an actor you know the I used to say this uh when I was like in my 20s I said you know isn't it great we' we've all picked this great profession that we can do until you know we're 90 I didn't mean that I wanted to do it until I'm 9 but if I keep going we'll get there um um what was the question again I'm sorry kind of that What attracted you to to this particular role because like you said at this point in your career you don't really have to prove anything but what still gets you motivated yeah as an actor you're you're always looking for uh a a um something challenging to do um for yourself and um and sometimes playing a bad guy a lot of times playing the bad guy is is the better role because they have more more um uh um uh you know they they have more what do you what am I looking for here um they have more to draw from you know that they've been damaged as a child you know that they this or you know this or that with Chief Sandy burn in Rebel Ridge I I saw him as an opportunity to take the thought or the idea that it was going to be an old southern cop trope of some sort and and how quickly it becomes something completely different and I and that's why I made a concerted effort with uh Jeremy with Jeremy and Aaron and I is that in our scenes um the they're conversational there is a lot of there's a lot of going on in those scenes but they're conversational and the funny thing is Is that real conflict real confrontation goes down like that and so I I love that whole thing about you thinking it's one thing and then as the story unravels it becomes so much different and uh uh that theme still is kind of playing in the background you know but but but it's about something so much different because for Sandy Burns he PR he sees himself as Robin Hood not as a villain because he's responsible for all of these parishes and all these other small towns around the town and it doesn't matter who comes into town be white brown black green and blue he's going to get robbed yeah he's he's pretty much you know he has no moral compass when it comes to money agnostic agnostic you know I got I got several parishes to run here man don't you get it absolutely it was an absolute honor and pleasure speaking with you today and best of luck with the project thank you so much you're are welcome give my love to Philly we do
