Stephen Colbert Brutally Nails Trump's Defense of Laura Loomer

welome to The Late Show I'm your host stepen colar you know every night every night every night I stand here and and I make jokes about all of Donald Trump's lies go ahead go ahead what would you say to your Republican colleagues or your allies who are concerned about your close relationship with Laura lummer well I don't know what they would say I Laura's been a supporter of mine just like a lot of people are supporters and she's been a supporter of mine she speaks very uh positively of the campaign I'm not sure why you asked that question but Laura is a supporter uh I don't control Laura Laura has to say what she wants she's a she's a free spirit well I don't know I mean look I can't tell Laura what to do Laura is a supporter I have a lot of supporters uh traveling with you on your plane a lot of people do it's a very big with you she made racist remarks about your opponent she also espoused conspiracy series about 911 do you disavow those remarks well I have to see what the remarks are I you're telling me for the first time we're here about we're here discussing the destruction of San Francisco and California by a person that's running for president so I don't even know what you're talking about I do know that uh she may have said something based on what you're telling me but I don't know what she said but I'll go take a look and I'll put out a statement later on but I really don't know please a fact Stater Trump lies so much he can't even remember the word for not lying okay all right everybody who wants to play a game of fact state or dare I dare you to fact State we will do large deportations from Springfield Ohio large deportations we're going to get these people out we're bringing them back to Venezuela you know he told Biden he's not accepting anybody back they moved all their criminals not all of them but the rest are moving in now they emptied their jails in Venezuela emptied their criminals emptied the nests they call them nests of bad people they're all now in the United States and they're now taking over cities it's like an Invasion From Within and we're going to have the largest deportation in the history of our country and we're going to start with Springfield and Aurora okay the mayor of Springfield Ohio the police chief the Republican governor of Ohio have all debunked this story about people leaving pets and now there are bomb threats at schools and kids being evacuated why do you still spread this story the real threat is what's happening at our border because you have thousands of people being killed by illegal migrants coming in and also dying you have women dying as they come up they're coming up in large groups we call it a caravan I think I came up with that name but it's really what it is 10,5 15,000 20,000 people and you have large numbers of women being killed in those Caravans coming up to this country and then when they get here they can go into the country and they they end up being sex slaves and everything else those are your real problems not the problem that you're talking now let's talk about Trump's new immigration plan it's just like the old one but with more worser and no surprise this plan has the same old author Trump advisor and and male elk about to charge a reflective store window Stephen Miller Miller's new plan includes some of Trump's Greatest Hits like sweeping raids and mass depart alongside fresh Horrors rounding up undocumented people and detaining them in giant camps to make the giant internment camp sound a little more familyfriendly Miller assured reporters that the camps would look professional Pro professional Sho it may be a giant step down the road to totalitarianism but on the bright side no Crocs now this is all made a lot hiter by the fact that Trump's former Chief of Staff John Kelly claims Trump once told him Hitler did a lot of good things okay I think we have enough data points have we proven the Trump is a fascist to find out let's bring out the Donald Trump dictat meter here we go Trump calls his opponent's Vermin says he will crush those who disagree with him holds on to power at all costs would declare martial law to stop an imaginary evil cabal plans to put people in camps and says Hitler had some good ideas [Applause] Jim he's gone and he's never coming back cuz our joke solved everything in one of the more puzzling episodes of political theater former president Donald Trump a man who could sell you beachfront property in the Mojave desert found himself defending a close Ally with a history of offensive comments again the Ally in question far-right conspiracy theorist Laura lumer a figure so controversial even her Shadow refuses to follow her into certain rooms Trump in a recent press conference at his Rancho Palos Verdes Golf Club was confronted with questions about his cozy relationship with lumer particularly after she accompanied him on a flight to Philadelphia and a 911 memorial now for those unfamiliar with lumer let's just say she's like the political version of that relative who shows up to Thanksgiving insults everyone and then asks for the Wi-Fi password with a long history of making anti-semitic remarks promoting 9/11 conspiracies and recently suggesting that vice president kamla Harris would make the White House smell like Curry loomer's resume is like a checklist of what not to say in public but delivered with the confidence of someone who's never read a history book Act One the strong free spirit Trump when asked about lum's influence on his campaign responded in classic trumpian fashion with the verbal equivalent of an elevator stuck between floors he called her a strong person and denied knowing much about her recent remarks to be fair Trump's Mastery of selective hearing is unparalleled if he were on trial he could be acquitted on the grounds of not knowing what his own defense attorney said I don't control Laura Trump said Laura has to say what she wants she's a she's a free spirit ah yes the free spirit defense lum's spirit is so free it's untethered from basic decency factual accuracy or any regard for human dignity but Trump's comments here sound a lot like the political equivalent of she's not my dog she just follows me around it's a curious defense considering Trump's leadership style is more in line with a helicopter parent who monitors his allies as if they were disobedient toddlers unless of course they say something offensive in which case he morphs into the world's most oblivious babysitter act two a big plane and bigger excuses when the Press pressed Trump further on loomer's offensive comments particularly about 9/11 and her recent racist remarks he Shrugged it off claiming he had no idea what she had said it's a very big plane Trump noted as if lummer could have been hiding in one of the overhead bins the entire time this raises an important philosophical question if a far-right conspiracy theorist boards your private plane and spews hate speech but you weren't paying attention does it still count according to Trump apparently not she's a supporter he kept repeating as though the mere Act of supporting his campaign grants lumer diplomatic immunity from accountability it's as if in Trump's World being a supporter is like getting a get out of jail free card in a particularly Twisted version of Monopoly act three a non- disavowal wrapped in confusion finally when directly asked if he would disavow lum's racist and conspiratorial remarks Trump employed his tried and true tactic the great Dodge we'll have to see what the remarks are he said sounding like a man who's just been told there's spinach in his teeth and isn't sure how to proceed but I'll go take a look and I'll put out a statement later on this line is classic Trump it's like watching someone promise to read the terms and conditions of an iTunes update they know they won't you know they won't and yet the Kade continues but the real comedy gold here isn't just Trump's non- answers it's the fact that this whole spectacle is happening while Trump is trying to convince Republicans that he's the stable seasoned leader to take them into 2024 all while being trailed by someone who could start a fight with a coat rack if given enough time conclusion the big tent or plane of trumpism Trump's defense of lumor highlights the strange often surreal nature of his political Universe a place where reality bends to suit the moment and free Spirits like lummer are given room to Rome no matter how offensive or conspiratorial their remarks it's a world where accountability is an afterthought and loyalty no matter how toxic trumps all the broader implications of this however are no laughing matter by continually aligning himself with figures like lumer Trump is normalizing extremist rhetoric creating an environment where the line between Fringe and mainstream is blurred and the fact that he can so casually dismiss concerns about lum's bigotry reflects a dangerous Trend in which offensive ideas are handwaved away as mere eccentricities at the end of the day Trump may claim his plane is big enough for all sorts of passengers but with people like lummer on board it's clear there's plenty of baggage and it's not just in the overhead compartments
