College Football Post-Spring Top 25: Georgia at No. 1, Ohio State at No. 2 | CBS Sports

[Music] CB at sports HQ presented by Enterprise let's talk a little college football uh because all means I miss it do y'all miss it I do like it needs to get here already us on not in his head Dennis DOD has come out with his post spring pre-season top 25 this will change it'll be another one uh as we get a little closer to the season Georgia Bulldogs still coming in at number one followed by Ohio State I will tell you chip Patterson has called the Buckey musty TV uh Dennis thought maybe they could have been number one and taking a look at Alabama in Old Miss I know Brady Quinn has some things to say about Old Miss maybe a little too low on this list we have Dennis DD Brady Quinn joining us here to go through Dennis's top 25 postp Spring list and we are starting right at the top with Georgia uh no more Brock Bowers there might not ever be a tight end quite like that at Georgia again we'll see no lad makoni but it feels like this is a constant for the time being in college football right there at the top um and also Carson Beck Brady very well could make a case to be that number one overall draft pick in the next draft I love the fact that Dennis put them in number one I think there's another team in contention but when you really look at the case Georgia made last year they lost one game one game in the SEC Championship game they very well could have been playing for the college football playoff I wouldn't have had any issue with it whatsoever but as you fast forward into this year that was a young team and yes outside of Bowers and lad Maki who they lost in the draft they return a lot of players Carson Beck their quarterback I I think W up being the first quarterback Tak in the 2025 class especially if he has as big of a year as I think he's going to have so credit to Kirby Smart also credit Dennis Dodd for putting them at number one this is one heck of a team that's coming back let's not forget too they don't have to navigate against an SEC that has Nick Sabin as the head coach at Alabama now their schedule's not easy but I still think this is one of the more talented teams has continued to recruit and develop well and will no doubt be in the mix for the national championship yeah totally agree by the way with Brady on set I feel like this is finals week in reality for me he always keeps me in check on these top yeah George George is the choice right now there wasn't much change from the pre-spring I think frankly Carson Beck is kind of underrated as a passer we talk about how tough and how defensive Georgia is but obviously he could have come out he didn't they're borderline loaded at receiver with Dominic love it and raat Thomas among others obviously they don't have a brock Bowers but they do have Oscar Delp a big tall guy at tight end who who's capable look they may there may never be another Brock powers or seldom uh for the things he provided for Georgia and the defense is going to be strong and look with uh with Kirby Smart now being Now by far I think the highest paid coach at $13 million uh and the playoff expanding let's just pencil them in I mean the whole season now is just for seeding for Georgia it doesn't really matter if these teams win the conference uh it kind of matters if they get the first round by and Georgia probably will but that's how big Georgia is I think we should pencil them in already Dennis let's talk about the team coming in at number two Ohio State here I will mention Tom forelli put out his list today he had Ohio State at his number one you said you were tempted to put them at number one as mentioned CH Patterson said this is going to be a mustsee TV Team all season long so why not number one chip for Ohio State why number two well I think you can make a case uh one of the problems I had is number one Georgia number two no quarterback named out of the spring I thought that was a slight concern you know will Howard was the tried andrue veteran who they got out of the portal to get the job and he didn't win the job um I think they're going to be okay Chip Kelly now is calling plays as an assistant coach for the first time since I think 08 I mean he's totally uh he's totally happy there that's another story we can talk about leaving UCLA as a head coach but they are loaded on both sides of the line Devin Brown is still in the mix I suspect but this is as good as Ohio State's been in a few years and look it all comes down no matter what you think about Ohio State I thought they've done one of the best I guess remodelings of the teams in the top 25 in the country they got six recruits out of the portal who were among the tops in the country but it all comes down to this guys if they don't beat Michigan and they're going to be favored as it is right now if they don't be Michigan they're going to be blown up uh you know Ryan Day is on the hot seat at 56 and8 by the way Chip Kelly has a little bit of security with a two-year contract but if they don't be Michigan forget about it that's what always comes down to there in Columbus Ohio for the Buckey Unfortunately they get to host the Wolverines coming into their house uh this year for that matchup I mentioned a little bit ago that I credited Dennis for not putting Ohio State number one and a little bit for this reason they won the off season they put together a lot of money in the transfer portal retaining guys who could have went to the NFL bringing them back bring in a bunch of talented players the transfer portal in particular quarterback will Howard which was a a spot for them that they needed to address now the interesting thing about that though is I'm not even so sure he's the best quarterback on their roster at Ohio State I think it's the two freshman I think it's Julian S who has transferred in and Aaron Nolan who's on the roster as well so we'll see how long will Howard can hold on to this position because when you have talent and Playmakers like Jeremiah Smith remember that name I'm going to say it again Jeremiah Smith the true freshman Ohio State all right you don't have to do a whole lot you just got to distribute the football and Let The Playmakers do work they'll have arguably the best defense in the country the only other real question about this team is their offensive line there's been a little bit of rebuilding retooling there how fast they can adapt to a new offense with Chip Kelly but there's no doubt they're at least the number two team in the country if not quite possibly the number one depending on how all that money will spent in the offseason ends up working out once the get of The Games first of all Dennis I apologize for calling you chip Patterson we have Chip Kelly Chip Patterson a lot of going obviously you're really quick and I hope I am not going to mess up our producer even more cuz he's already upset with us when we were going through Georgia you said there was another team you would have put at number one that was a team that I would have contemplated putting at number one Ohio State but again for the reason that they spent all the money they had the biggest I guess news this offseason with the way they were able to handle things you bring in Chip Kelly who was a head coach to come be your coordinator all the players they got from the transfer portal guys like J jt2 moo Al who could have went to the NFL decided to come back denzer all these other pieces they have they came back very similar to what as they would say in Columbus that team up north did just a year ago retaining a lot of those Michigan players to come back for a running a national championship that is really what's at stake in Columbus it's not just about beating Michigan for them they're coming back a lot of these players to go win a National Championship got it and Brady you mentioned Ohio State in the transfer portal the success they had and that brings us to number three because Oregon they have a great transfer class as well year three under Dan Lanning um but are they going to be contenders right away in in the Big 10 that's a big question mark there um Dennis number three are you buying all of the Oregon height putting them there at number three I am because I think the biggest move uh that Oregon made was a move that Dan Lanning didn't make and that was to Alabama I think he was probably number one on their list and if you remember he took his name out fairly early including pretty quickly but you've got a tried and true guy a recruiter from a national championship team in the SEC who spent a lot of time there I think he was high on Alabama's list not to disparage Kaylin dor who we're going to talk about but I I think that was the best thing keeping them I think the biggest question mark for Oregon going in is number one can they push Ohio State and I think they can uh if things go right I think they can make a run at the Big 10 in their first season because Dan Lanning knows you're going to have to get strong on both sides of the line not that Oregon wasn't uh but to get there they're going to have to be better in the second are and up front they were 95th in pass defense last year when you saw a lot of shootouts sometimes by the by the Oregon team they lose B Knicks they lose Troy Franklin can they get guys to go back in there um but I I love Oregon I love Oregon in the top four after they've got him number three and they are going to be assimilated and ready to go in the Big 10 so this is going to be my first disagreement with Dennis in regards to a ranking because I I think Oregon is a top 10 team but it's a little Rich to say they're just going to go into the Big 10 and compete away like I understand they're talented Dan Ling has done a tremendous job recruiting developing 10 wins two years ago 12 wins last season however there's a lot of challenges that Oregon faces this year all right they've got to go across the country different time zones dealing with the travel from the west coast to the Midwest they got to face rosters that are built a lot different than what we saw in the Pack 12 where he's had a lot of that success with a lot of the teams they're going up against so how how do they handle all the adversity that comes along with that you have a new quarterback again in Dylan Gabriel who's been incredibly productive but is he an up upgrade over Bo Knicks uh we talked about some of the Playmakers they lose Troy Franklin on the outside with all that speed and playmaking ability you lose Bucky Irving in the backfield I know they've always got a stable of backs but I've just got more questions right now about Oregon than I do feeling confident that with all of the changes for teams all of them too coming from the Pack 12 into the Big 10 that they'll be able to compete right away with the likes of Ohio State Penn State this year who were leaving out of the conversation and obviously a team like Michigan who's the back-to-back defending champs okay so one disagreement there and it kind of rolls into to the next thing we're going to talk about we're going to jump over to the SEC Old Miss coming in at number five Alabama coming in at number six of course Alabama with the questions with kayin de board new head coach but Old Miss that's the team Brady I believe you think should be at number three instead of Oregan yeah I'm actually going to steal words from Dennis Dennis is this the most talented Old Miss team that we've seen maybe ever yeah I I mean that's those words are being tossed around at uh at Old Miss so the pressure is on Lane it's no longer having a frat party for a spring game they're actually going to have to produce and make a run maybe at the SEC title after getting what is it 19 wins the last two years which is a I think they haven't done that in 50 years at Old Miss so the pressure's kind of on at Old Miss it is on but I think pressure sometimes leads to Diamonds and I think this could be one of those seasons for Old Miss they returned their quarterback Jackson Dart they return a lot of pieces on offense they did lead the portal if that's meaningful to you uh they're going to have 10 new starters on both sides of the football just from the portal alone if not other pieces that they added via depth and I think if you go back to last year and look at really how good this team was they had two losses on the road to Bama on the road to Georgia and again you have an B Team not coached by Nick Saban anymore could be some Growing Pains there so I'm giving Lane kein the edge here and a very talented Old Miss team that I think has the ability to challenge Georgia for the SEC but no doubt about it this might be one of the best teams we've ever seen for om Miss in quite some time to start the season I'd put them at number three what about Alabama at number six B I'm okay with that I mean look Jaylen milro comes back it's more of a question mark for me how does he fit within kayin dore's system it was more of a pass happy system I think kayin dor is a heck of a coach but you're following the goat I mean just to maintain what Nick sain has done is unheard of and obviously they're talented they've recruited well in previous years can you maintain that level of talent Recruitment and really retainment too on your roster it's yet to be seen so how does milro fit within this offense but how does it all come together as a head coach he's been successful not to the likes of Nick sain are you going to go in there and try to mimic what he did are you going to put your own stamp or or fingerprints on how you going to rebuild this culture it's kind of difficult how you go about handling that so uh we'll see how things look for for Alabama early on they'll be in the hunt as well they'll probably be a part of the playoff but I'd have them more around five or six I think where Dennis has them yeah I have huge question marks about Alabama not that they're not going to be in the playoff not that they're not going to contend but the standard is going to be so high for kayin deor I talked to Greg burn the ad at Alabama about the process and that was one of the first things he asked kayin dbor when he flew out to Seattle to meet him what was it a day after Nick retired and he said you understand what's happening here not only the guy to follow the guy but the guy to follow the alltime guy and Caitlin deor said I consider it an honor there's only one person that could do that I could believe I believe that is me and he wants to come out there the concerns I have is are obvious and Brady is right no Dallas Turner no Isaiah Bond uh I think they get the getting left tackle Kaden Proctor back after his transfer to Iowa is huge that protects jayen milro who will I think make an improvement under kayin dor U what he did with Michael pennick was significant and that's not forget kayin dor I'm sorry uh jayen milro LED is the leading returning passer in terms of yards per pass and I know he makes some bad decisions but nobody in the country was higher than him last year coming back at 10 yards per pass but so much loss I just want to see I don't want to see it I'm interested to see how the Alabama fan base reacts if this team goes nine and three Brady let's talk about your Alma moer Notre Dame coming in at number eight entering the third full season under Marcus Freeman you get Riley Leonard yeah the schedule looks easy so in your eyes what needs to be what needs to happen in order to deem it a success uh the offensive line has to gel and come together you obviously lost some key pieces on the offensive line that's going to be the biggest question mark that and really the help of Riley leard you know you get him from the transfer portal you now put him in a position where he's experienced he's athletic to run their new offensive coordinator Mike dead Brock who returns to inter Dame that system their defense is going to be one of the best in the country especially with all the guys who decided to come back don't have to worry about that you've got an unbelievable stable running backs they addressed a lot of the concerns with pass catchers too so it really comes down to their offensive line how they mesh and then Riley Leonard and can he fit into this this system fast enough to be able to beat his old old head coach Mike Elco who's now at Texas College Station come August 31st Notre Dame good luck to your Fighting Irish this season Brady Quinn uh finally let's look here let's talk about Miami this is one of your highest risers Dennis uh we were talking about this in The Newsroom yesterday I am still waiting for Miami to be back if you will under Mario chrisal uh how long are we going to keep waiting for this well I I don't know what the standard is for Miami this year but they've got to improve in year three under Mario crisal I love the addition of Cam Ward I think he's one of the best plus one dual threat quarterbacks whatever you want to say about him he gets to a bigger stage in Miami where I think he'll be they'll have more behind him to allow him to succeed than Washington State uh and I thought the addition of Damien Martinez out of the portal from Oregon state was absolutely huge now you've got a one-two punch you can get a little physical you can go down field but look myami is looking to break into the top 10 not go to a bowl game and that's what they've been competing for the last two years so this this is a big year for Mario Chris Ball Big Year in the
