THE CREW IS AIMING FOR HISTORIC FIVE DAYS IN ORBIT INCLUDING THE FIRST SPACE WALK DURING A PRIVATE MISSION. >>> NASA HAS A PLAN TO BRING BACK THE TWO ASTRONAUTS WHO TOOK THE TROUBLED BOEING STAR LINER TO INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION BUT IT MEANS WILMORE AND WILLIAMS THEREBY THERE AT SIX MONTHS. THEY'LL RETURN IN FEBRUARY EXTENDING WHAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A WEEK LONG MISSION TO MORE THAN EIGHT MONTHS. >> JUST TOO MUCH UNCERTAINTY. TOO MUCH RISK. >> WE ARE JOINED BY OUR CBS NEWS SPACE CONSULTANT TO TALK MORE ABOUT THE LATEST. I REMEMBER WHEN WE STARTED TALKING ABOUT THIS MISSION AND THERE HAD BEEN PROBLEMS WHICH CAUSED THE MISSION TO BE DELAYED BUT BOEING CONCLUDED THE PROBLEMS WERE NOT SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH AND THEY COULD MOVE FORWARD WITH THE LAUNCH. WHAT CONCERNS ARE THERE NOW ABOUT THE STAR LINER AND WHY THEY DON'T THINK THAT THEY COULD BRING THESE ASTRONAUTS BACK? >> REALLY IT'S NOT THAT THEY DON'T THINK IT CAN BRING THEM BACK, IT'S THAT THEY CAN'T BE SURE IT WILL DO IT SAFELY. THE PROBLEMS, HELIUM LEAKS, THRUSTER PROBLEMS, ALL OF THOSE WERE IN THE FIRST TWO DAYS. SINCE NASA AND BOEING HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED, CAN YOU COUNT ON THE SYSTEMS TO WORK PROPERLY WHEN YOU UNDOCK AND MAKE THAT BURN TO GET OUT OF ORBIT AND COME HOME. BOEING THINKS IT IS SAFE. NASA SAYS THEY CAN'T BE SURE. >> I KNOW WE HEARD FROM THE ASTRONAUTS AND THEY WERE THRILLED, THE IDEA OF AN ASTRONAUT STAYING EXTRA TIME, WHO WOULD TURN THAT DOWN? BUT IT IS A LOT DIFFERENT THAN SIX ADDITIONAL MONTHS. HAVE WE HEARD FROM THEM? >> WE HAVE NOT. WE ARE HOPING TO HAVE A NEWS CONFERENCE WITH THEM FROM THE SPACE STATION NEXT WEEK OR SHORTLY THERE AFTER. WHAT NASA TELLS US, IT IS TRUE, WHEN THEY TAKE OFF FOR A FLIGHT, THEY KNOW THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THINGS CAN CHANGE AND A FLIGHT CAN BE EXTENDED. IN THIS CASE TAKING OFF ON A FLIGHT YOU ORIGINALLY EXPECT TO LAST A LITTLE MORE THAN A WEEK AND ENDING UP STAYING EIGHT MONTHS AWAY FROM THEIR FAMILY, OVER THE HOLIDAYS, THERE IS NO QUESTION THERE IS A BIT OF A PSYCHOLOGICAL BURDEN THERE BUT THEY ARE TRAINED ASTRONAUTS, VETERAN TEST PILOTS. THEY HAVE LONG MILITARY BACKGROUNDS. IF ANYBODY CAN TAKE
