oh my God they're screaming when London's grenfell tower burned in 2017 72 people were killed in a horrific catastrophe that many believed only happened because of extreme inequality in Britain now a retired judge's 1,700 page report essentially validates that view concluding government officials Architects the construction industry and Regulators failed residents at every turn all contributed to it in one way or another in most cases through incompetence but in some cases through dishonesty and greed the fire which began in a refrigerator on the fourth floor of the 23-story building was fueled by panels installed on the outside of the tower in a 2016 refurbishment the plastic and aluminum cladding was supposed to be fireproof but wasn't and the inquiry ruled the companies making it and selling it knew that to be the case corporations behaved like absolute criminals systematically manipulating and lying um and we were let down we were let down before during and after the fire the leadership of London's fire department was also faulted for not being prepared to fight a fire in a high-rise and for telling residents to stay put and wait to be rescued it should never have happened the country failed to discharge its most fun fundamental duty to protect you and your loved ones mercio Gomez his pregnant wife and two young daughters escaped The Inferno but their son due in the days following the fire was still born I want to see people behind bars I want to see the corporations punished to the maximum and that's not going to bring my son back and it's not going to bring anybody else back but it's just a step forward to what Justice may look like to the family's great frustration criminal proceedings were put on hold until after the inquiry released its report so it could still be years before there are any prosecutions Chris Brown CBC News London
