morning was awesome it was fantastic to see and I'm telling you look couldn't you feel the energy if you were there even watching on TV you could feel a different type of energy when you add players you get new blood in the clubhouse even if it's somebody who's been there before like Tommy fam it energizes the clubhouse the ballpark the fan base everybody's a little bit more excited and look fetty hasn't even pitched a game yet Armstrong hasn't even pitched a game yet Tommy fam has already contributed literally in his first at bat so there you go Chris and is getting to Wild Card round good enough for this franchise doesn't seem like it but it's what we have to accept big picture I agree with you that it shouldn't be the standard the expectations for this year though I mean how good is this team let's be honest they started off horrible of course I want the St Louis Cardinals to go beyond making the wild card but you also have to react to what you're seeing if you go back to the first month of the season the Cardinals looked horrific it looked like it could be a a repeat of last year they've dug out of that they've got a shot this season let's talk in the future about how this team this franchise needs to get back to to to Really winning deep playoff runs in October right now we can only focus on what we got with the Cardinals in 2024 which feels like a team that has a chance Mets have a 53% chance of making the playoffs I want to go there and just kind of make sure I can read off all the other wild card teams the Cardinals are competing for for these three Wild Card spots so let's go back to the old standings basically everybody won so Cardinals still what six games back tied with the Pirates Cardinals two games out of the wild card also tied with the Pirates so as things stand right now Atlanta Braves have the top wild card spot they have a half game lead on the Mets and the Padres so Mets and Padres have that second and third spots they're technically tied but Diamond Backs half game back Pirates and Cardinals two games back San Francisco Giants five games back let's kind of forget about the Giants right now basically let's be real about this let's just assume the Braves have the wild card spot and I'm just doing that I guess you can't really assume that to be honest with you but but look there are Braves Mets Padres Diamondbacks Pirates Cardinals there are six teams vying for those three spots so the Cardinals will have to jump three teams and as of now well when I say three teams Pirates are tied so basically Cardinals have to jump the Diamondbacks and they would have to jump the Padres and they would have to do a little bit better than the Pirates so you have to jump two or three teams over the next couple months they are 55 and 57 so quick math that's 107 games that means they have 55 to go we're basically one game away folks from the 23ds point of the Season we have a whole third of the Season deadline for sea Armstrong I understand if you're not super happy about the the hall if that's the right way to say it with Sean Armstrong Sean Armstrong 33 about to be 34 here in September right handed pitcher journeyman been around for 10 years this year with the Rays 5.40 erra in 38 appearances 46 and two3 innings 50 strikeouts that's not bad again the 5.40 ra with a 3.76 FIP if you're looking for uh things to be happy about career in 10 years in The Bigs 4.18 ER 3.94 FIP he's been all over the place played with the Rays Guardians Indians Orioles Mariners Marlins let's check his splits let's check his splits this year for for sea Armstrong and again I understand if you feel like he you didn't get much in return for Dylan Carlson and look we're going to get into that so for Armstrong lefties are crushing him as you probably know you probably saw that with the reports after this move was made lefties this year batting 351 415 on base 568 slug versus righties 254 average 326 on base 364 slug for a 690 Ops so pretty effective against righties lefties have a 982 Ops lefties are absolutely crushing Shawn Armstrong I think I think the the conversation though is more to me a big picture conversation and it's about look Dylan Carlson how did it get to the point that a dude who was one of your top prospects was your top prospect years ago gets to a point that with a couple years of of control left this guy's a free agent in 2027 Dylan Carlson how how have we gotten to the point again where you basically have to to trade one of these top Outfield prospects for very little I mean you did get a major league reliever Sean Armstrong he's a guy who's on an expiring deal so you get Sean Armstrong for half a season but years ago when you look at you look at Dylan Carlson as the Cardinals top prospect and it wasn't just the Cardinals I mean all of baseball really valued this guy he was in the Futures game look at this but before the 2021 season Dylan Carlson was the ninth ranked Prospect in all of baseball folks MLB ranked him the 13th best Prospect in all of baseball before 2021 baseball prospectus ranked him the 16th best Prospect in all baseball if you go back the year before before the covid year 2020 he was ranked ninth excuse me 9th was 2021 he was ranked 10th by Baseball America 17th by MLB and 18th by baseball perspective so across the board Dylan Carlson in 2020 and 2021 was essentially one of the top let's just say nine to 18 best prospects in baseball so he's right there about 10th to 20th in all of baseball for two seasons this was an elite Blue Chip Prospect we know it did not work out and then basically 3 four years later he's getting traded for a journeyman reliever with a 5.4 ER with a half year of control how did we get to this point that's the real question how did we once again get to this point with Dylan Carlson it feels like they always get to this point Tyler O'Neal how do you trade all these outfielders or how do you let him go whoever it is Randy Ros Arena and adolis Garcia and all that and we all know we all know there's a different story for every single one of these guys I'm not trying to get into that but big picture how come you haven't been able to unlock these guys when they're here and how come for the most part when they go elsewhere they're always way better that's the real question Dylan Carlson remember 2021 2021 pretty good season third in the Rookie of the Year 115 Ops plus 18 bombs 65 RBI 266 average 437 slug 343 on base for a 780 PS Ops plus of 115 that was in his age 22 season folks and you were thinking big things to come for Dylan Carlson he never got back to that the next year 2022 he was League average is 99 Ops plus 20123 he was a 78 Ops plus this year he's a 47 Ops plus he's essentially half of League average what the hell happened he's batting 198 he's slugging 240 zero home runs for Dylan Carlson as he heads to the Tampa Bay Rays and you've already seen Tommy fam in one as you know 155 average 259 slug in 20 games at Memphis here's his numbers folks these are not numbers of anybody you're going to call up 240 average 37 on base 373 slug for a 679 Ops he's got five homers he's got 26 ribbies he's got 17 doubles he's batting 240 with a 307 on base 373 slug 679 Ops at Memphis guys that's not anything you call up remember he had a he had a 7 87 Ops in the big leagues last year he's got an Ops of 100 points lower this year at Triple A you tell me is that a guy you call up no Jordan Walker needs to prove himself to get the call up I love Jordan Walker but budget is much bigger than the Rays but still I feel like Hein Bloom does baseball the way the Cardinals want to do baseball in terms of constructing a roster a minor league organization a pitching staff and how much money you want to spend and how you want to allocate resources is in the farm system and not necessarily be a big spender in free agency and also how about how about no one to hold him and no one to fold him the Rays kind of always had to do this they would trade their good pieces away with about two years of control left about a year and a half of control so that uh they could replenish with younger guys and keep churning that out and I feel like the Cardinals would be better off if they did that a little bit it seems like all these outfit ERS especially you wait you wait you give them 5,000 opportunities and then you trade them when they have essentially no value that's not good that's not good business folks Snips 127 Dylan Carlson got to be the biggest bust Prospect in my lifetime that's the other thing I mean so many prospects for different reasons I was thinking back go back about 10 years the Cardinals have had a lot of bad luck injuries and just dudes that didn't pan out if you go back to Oscar t obviously that tragedy Alex Reyes could never stay healthy a million injuries and then I mean a bunch of different prospects you can go back to the the Steven pcais and the Randall gritch of the world and Dylan Carlson and Tyler O'Neal I know they all weren't the top prospects but so many guys that were top level prospects that didn't pan out for different reasons Seasons it's unfortunate my guy Gio Gio lorenti used to love hot take Central used to call in how the negotiation went hey Tampa we have Dylan Carlson on the trade block can we get Fairbanks about a run and three qus better from a fit standpoint last year he was a 1.38 his fit was 2.54 so his results were much better last year by about a run compared to his FIP either either way hey if he
