borrow from Florida and uh and Miami matching up in Gainesville and I want to give a big shout out to Phil Murphy because he saved the day here doing the a block of our show stepping in seamlessly doing a wonderful job while I was sprinting across the campus here in Gainesville because we had weather uh at our normal set and had to get indoors so thanks to Phil and thanks to all of you just absolute professionals let's carry on let's get back to the show okay and everything to do with college football officially underway field Gates put out his list of the top prospects for the 2025 draft class two of his top 10 got their season underway last night Colorado shadur Sanders and Travis Hunter ranked seventh and Ninth respectively on the list they helped lead the Buffs to a 31- 26 win over North Dakota State first of all there ain't no 50-50 ball with Travis if the ball's up close it's his ball shadur out of the shotgun he's got Charlie to his right long throw grabb Travis Hunter circles around down the sideline there he goes the most dynamic player in college football third down shadur throws this one right side comeback leaping grab inone touchdown touchdown Colorado who is that mass man Travis Hunter I just had a lot of confidence in myself I told my coach third down give me the ball we going to win this game we going to get up out of here and I did what I had to do catch the ball get TouchDown and let's go they're a lot of fun to watch and mea what did you take away from Travis Hunter's three touchdown performance last night I mean he's his versus little as you Laura doing NFL in college in the same day the way he plays both sides of the ball at such a high level I'm watching him thinking all right Mina should he be a wide receiver or should he be a cornerback and both like I I I truly do not have an answer to this question at this point because I mean you saw it there in the highlights his skill as the receiver with the ball in his hands his understanding of space leverage the body control on that Bonkers touchdown catch but then you see those same qualities when he plays DB and he's so athletic I mean I don't think people understand the level of difficulty required to play as much football as he does and continue to do so at a high level over the course of the game speaks to not only his uh physical fitness but also his mental acuity I just think this guy's a limit for this young man so this was like a basically an NFL game yesterday because there was no actual professional football everybody in the NFL was watching this Colorado game and watching those two players and a lot of the group chats around the NFL at least the ones that I'm invited to were talking about Hunter as a wide receiver number one of course it's the money right I mean the top of the wide receiver Market is $35 million a year for cornerback right now that's 21 million dollar a year so a dramatic difference to play wide receiver but that catch in the end zone his hands on that catch it it's like a shame to waste that on a cornerback you don't have that's so rare to see a wide receiver make a play like that in such a tight space I can't wait to continue to watch them throughout this season they're always electric but Travis Hunter we're going to keep the debating it and that'll be a fun draft debate too time now to read and react you guys let's go to a little birthday boy action with Drake May turned 22 today he's only 22 one day after learning that he did not win the starting job in New England here's more I would think disappointed I wouldn't say disappointed obviously you know there's two ways to look like you know I want to play you know Competitive Edge and me um at the same time understand the situation um you know kind of was coming in here and um job's you know being the offense and you got you know the Reps um you know with the ones all Camp so can't really say I'm disappointed but uh I'll same time want to be playing do everything I can to prove you know can can be the starter and um like I had a good camp um throwing it well um played well throughout the preseason so other than that just uh keep my head down and keep working Bill what did you make a New England's decision to me it's not about Drake May's play CU he out played jacobe verset in the pre-season I think it's about keeping him healthy and not putting him behind a very inexperienced and Frank still work in progress offensive line they really struggle with penalties against Washington um cha cor for one of their veterans wiped away a 48 yard play with an illegal formation penalty their starters at left tackle and left guard are injured Cole strange their former first round pick on the pupet to begin the year they have to got the line right before they can get May right behind them at quarterback of course he handled it so well let's go to another rookie quarterback and Jaden Daniels who did win the starting job in Washington but he does not want to be looked at as the team's savior cuz at the end of the day you know it's a it takes a team to to help people out um you know it can't go out there and you know think I'm the Savior uh you know everything um you know when the plays are out there to be made make the plays but you know got to get the 10 other guys um and the whole organization U moving forward in One Direction mea how can Daniels and this Commander's offense reach their full potential this season yeah he Jaden makes great point it's not all about him it's about his teammates it's also about their offensive coordinator Cliff Kingsbury and that's what I'm interested in seeing this year not just how he deploys Jaden as a passer and he is a terrific pocket passer but how much he uses him on designed runs you see the impact already that his legs have on defenses it clarifies coverages it makes things easier in the Run game however does have a slim build you don't want to expose him to too many hits so I think for Cliff very important task is finding that right balance let's say in the NFC East Dak Prescott playing on the final year of his contract had this to say when asked if he needs a deal to get done before the season uh I don't need a no no would you like it done before the season uh I think it says a lot if it is or if it isn't um but however doesn't doesn't really matter to me to be honest with you what does it say if it isn't just how people feel I don't know how do you how how do you feel right about that you open that door yeah I know how do you feel about Jerry said the negotiation isn't about your Merit as the Cowboys quarterback but more about their C situation what do you take from that when he says you know it's not really about what you're doing yeah I understand that that's the business and the nature of this this game that we play um uh yeah I mean I stopped honestly listening to things that he says to the media a long time ago so um doesn't really hold way with me I mean Jeremy smiling through it but where do things stand with Dak and the Cowboys yeah Lord that is a smile of a man who has considerable leverage and is happy with his life right now but here where is where things stand at the moment I'm told that both sides have been talking every few days that's been the strategy for both the Cowboys and Dak Prescott no major progress right now no new offers but at both sides have told me we've got a week and so they're not resigned to the Fate that Dak Prescott is just going to go into year without a contract they are going to try but at least people with the Cowboys do acknowledge why it's hard to do a deal because Prescott is not afraid of free agency he sort of welcomes it in a way because of that considerable leverage that he does have so the Cowboys are going to try but they know it's going to be tough for that reason the first eight months of that deal which he was happy about and he wanted to play games I'm told you know he didn't want to sit this out and draw this hold in out any longer than he had to be he wanted to be back with his team and really despite some of the trade rumors and the team he would have gone to San Francisco was never overly serious about moving him at least in the last few weeks they were dedicated to getting this deal done with them so they finally found some common ground there different situation though in New York with the Jets you got Hassan reic there I've been checking in on this today talk to some people involved and they said they've gotten no firm indication that he's going to be there week one to start off the practice week on Monday so this is very much still up in the air he seems convicted about staying away here despite a salary of 14 plus million if he doesn't show up this year his contract tolls now the Jets have Will McDonald a young player former first round pick taking his place right now they like him and how he's developed but clearly they want reic there they're just have been no major contract talks so a bit of a problem for the Jets and you got Jamar Chase checking on this one all day I have talked to some people with the Bengals that are optimistic that something might be able to get done in the next few week or next few days excuse me they're hoping that by Monday he'll be back on that practice field talks are ongoing my sense is the Bengals have tried to solve this renew their efforts a little bit but there's a lot lot of work to be done here still with the structure and the guarantees my sense is when a contract does get done that number will have a three in front of it on a peror average and he'll be in that CD lamb Justin Jefferson Stratosphere well above $30 million per year but you know they got to get there and they're not there yet yeah that's what he deserves certainly but it's been an eventful week for the pengal head coach Zack Taylor trying to pin down just exactly when we'd see his star white out on the field yeah he's going to practice this week and we'll just keep taking it from there back are you confident he'll play week one yes I I think I probably put my foot in my mouth speaking too quickly and it's just again this is a day-to-day situation we'll just keep seeing it as that he's been at every meeting so you know he he knows everything he's been in the system now for three years that he's played it in the fourth year now and so again he he knows everything he's he's very on top of it you can't waste a day complaining about a situation just got to make the most of it and keep it moving and and that's what our guys have done and we're all on the same page we're all on board with this thing and so just excited to get the game we you know what in Taylor's defense it's been tough to figure out but either way he's eager to get Jamar Chase back on the field because he has had one of the best starts through his career that we've ever seen Chase is averaging 82.6 receiving yards per game in his career the fifth most by a player in his first three seasons in NFL history the only wide outs above him Justin Jefferson Odell Beckham Jr Randy Moss and Anquan Balton quite the company to be in Bill we are now nine days away from the opener against the Patriots How concerned are you at this point about this situation getting resolved does seem a little curious that it's gotten to this point right like certainly both sides should be incentivized to get this deal done but maybe if you're the Bengals you think about the pass and think if he misses a week or two we can survive because we have another star receiver in t Higgins and remember go back to 2022 they had they were without Jamar Chase for four games because of a hip injury they did go three and one and over the last three years Joe Burrow's numbers with and without Jamar Chase on the field to me at least shockingly similar really not much of a drop off at all which you would expect when you're missing one of the best receivers in all of football and that was only a four game sample and obviously the Bengals are better with Jamar Chase than they are without him but it comes down to missing a game in week one to kind of test what Jamar Chase's limits are here I think the Bengals might feel like they can survive because they have another star receiver to work with I felt a heck of a lot better about this situation before I saw that super cut of Zack Taylor you could see the confidence like weaking out of him as the week went on talking about whether or not Chase would be there and I get why Chase wouldn't obviously his value to the team is uh tremendous because while bill is correct and noting Higgins has been excellent he's played well when Chase hasn't been in there it's also been obvious that the Bengals are moving on from Higgins and they're choosing Chase but they can't choose Chase if Chase isn't there um the other thing I would say about this is while they have played well without Higgins uh they have also had Tyler Boyd in that most of those games if I remember correctly and if you take chase out of the equation Higgins slides up to your number one suddenly you're looking at a really young group of pass catchers behind him Chase has been by Far Over Joe bro's career the leader and Target share on third down against the blitz uh and he's been such a security blanket for him and also a source of explosive plays in those situations it would be really tricky to not have him at the start of the Season against the Patriots defense by the way that for all of the doubts people have about New England this year is still uh solid on that side of the ball you know Zack Taylor reminded me of like being a parent and thinking you're an expert on something and then it just keeps smacking you in the face like every single thing you're doing wrong and you're like okay maybe not maybe I didn't know anything after all welcome to every day of my life all right let's talk about a game that's now just a week away the NFL heads to Brazil the eagers and Eagles and Packers go head-to-head in South Paulo Jordan love looks to build on the momentum of his first season as a starter that included a playoff win meanwhile jayen Herz gets ready for his fifth different play caller since being drafted by Philly Jaylen Herz excelled in 2022 but didn't have as much success in key aspects of the game last season his qbr on play action and in the Red Zone decreased significantly and his fourth quarter qbr plummeted as you see there most of his troubles came late in the season through week 12 he had the sixth best qbr in the league and then from then on he ranked 15th Kell Moore now steps in as the new OC and Herz is excited about the new possibilities offensively in Philly new offensive coordinator I assume when everyone gets a new offensive coordinator you probably have some new stuff is that much of a big deal you know I think playing quarterback back touching the ball every play having different voices having different thought processes I think that changes the dynamic of what a system fully is you know and I think throughout the game it's more common than not to have very similar plays and ideas and manipulate the same Defenders throughout all the systems in the NFL but I think the one thing that's different is how you coach those things how you prepare those things and so I have all this experience dating back to my freshman year in college coaches have changed often but I've been able to pull so many different nuggets and so I'm excited for what's to come with Coach a fantastic story there interview by ancap's cover story so check out the rest of that Jeremy what have you learned about the relationship so far how it's meshed between offensive coordinator Kell Moore and Jaylen Herz in cam well Laura Jaylen Herz needed a new Voice last year head coach Nick serani took a handson approach and there was tension between the two there's just no way around it this year serani has taken a hands-off approach given the keys to Kell Moore to operate this thing and I'm told the relationship so far has been really positive because Kell Moore has sort of an understated demeanor but he'll also be direct with Jaylen tell him if he missed a read he'll let him know but it's never personal and so Kell Moore and quarterback coach Doug nus have been together for a long time three stops Dallas Chargers last year not together with Philly so they know what they need out of quarterback play I'm also told that that regime has seen a little bit of Dak presc SC in Jaylen Herz that he can deliver from the pocket but he's also at his best when he's moving around a little bit H yeah Mina that kind of gives you a little peak of what we may see what are you most interested in when it comes to what this actual scheme will look like with Kell Moore now at the helm first and foremost you want to see if Jaylen Herz performs better against the blitz Jeremy bringing up Dak Prescott is interesting because he's excellent against the blitz with more we'll see if that translates with Herz because that was probably his biggest issue last year as a quarterback another thing though I wanted see is um something that happened last year when defenses didn't fear Jaylen herz's legs as much because he wasn't as explosive on the ground they played more to High coverage and against those looks the Eagles went from third and success rate six in EPA play in 2022 second half of last year they were 12th and 13th it felt like they didn't have answers against that looks those looks proba me the same way they did the year before a lot of that had to do with Jaylen Herz as a runner if that's the case this year for Kell I think the challeng is can you use Sequon Barkley in some capacity as a pass catcher Dallas Goddard is another player I'd like to see working that short intermediate middle of the field uh because I think defense is going to play them that way until Herz shows that he can punish them with his legs and I want to see if Moore has answers Yeah you mentioned the Blitz and it really feels like that's just not a performance thing for Jaylen Herz that was a structural issue with this offense under Nick serani the past couple Seasons obviously they did a lot of things well on offense but they didn't have the side adjustments the hot reads built into the offense that a lot of teams have for blitzes it was really just hey Jaylen if there's a guy on you get the ball to one of your big receivers and figure it out and it was a problem for this offense and teams latched on to it in the second half of last year his interception rate more than or about doubled over the last two years when Jaylen Herz was blitzed versus when he was not blitzed and so I think for Kell Moore this is about giving Jaylen Herz answers in the passing game giving him solutions to work with especially in a Jason Kelce protection Universe now that he has the ability to make those decisions have answers after the snap and make his life easier against the blitz don't make Jaylen Herz turn into a magician take too many extra hits and hopefully keep him healthy all the way through a deep playoff run in Philadelphia I was talking to Nick Sabin about Jaylen Herz just the other day certainly coached him at a very high level and coached him at times when he wasn't at his best and he said what he expects to see out of Jaylen this year is a huge bounceback just because of the psyche of this player he is his own worst critic and he Cardinal on the other side of the spectrum a team that I feel like well we are sleeping on a little bit I think Kyler is correct here the offense improved dramatically after he returned from his tour in ACL last year they were 28th in EPA per play before he came back 10th in the NFL after he returned and by the way that was without a really impactful wide receiver they're adding this year in Marvin Harrison Jr and then you flip it to the defensive side of the ball and I went deep into my my nerd Cavern for this I guess when it came to stats on the defense and last year of course so many teams were dealing with injuries a quarterback the average team faced about 73% of snaps from the opposing team's top quarterbacks so their primary guy you're Aaron Rogers and the Jets for example the Cardinals last year we're at 93% that was the heaviest and most difficult schedule opposing quarterbacks any team faced at all last year really was only a half game of like Taylor hecki in Atlanta a half game of Mitchell Tris with the Steelers otherwise they were playing the number one every single week so the Cardinals should face a a more backups this year I think and that will really help the defense take a step forward uh I like this pick a lot I will say I am skeptical about this defense but the offense on the other hand I think could certainly lift them to more wins in part because of what Bill said the second half the season after Kyler returned they were actually quite efficient and particularly efficient running the football in fact by some metrics they were the best rushing team in the NFL in this second half of last season I feel like under their new offense coordinator Duke ping they really found an identity on the ground this was a team that love putting multiple tight ends on the field pulling their offensive lineman and just bulldozing defenses now if you can build any sort of consistent passing attack off of that and that should be a lot easier with Marvin Harrison Jr in the mix and Kyler actually coming off of a healthy off season well I mean going from Top 10 in EPA per play to anything better than that you're talking about one of the best offens in the NFL even just when we show the highlights there of Kyler it's just worth a reminder of how Dynamic he can be he can be a cheat code when it comes to being great offensively defenses don't want to see somebody like that this new on NFL live uh this is interesting from Ravens reporter Jameson hinley tight end Mark Andrews back on the practice field today for the first time since being involved in a car accident on August 14th great to see him back and glad he's okay Andrews and the Ravens start the seasons in six days it's only six days away against the Chiefs Ravens GM Eric dasta was asked if his other tight end Isaiah likeley is poised for a breakout season I've seen an urgency this year with him his leadership interaction with other players you know he's he's kind of changed from being a rookie to being a vet and uh I just feel like he and Mark Andrews will be the best tandem at their position in the league and really create a lot of problems for opposing defensive coordinators yeah uh seems like what do you think Mina I I'd love to hear that and I completely agree I I think this Ravens uh 12 Personnel grouping with those two tight ends Patrick card's kind of a deao tight end as well is going to be absolutely filthy this year and part because they were filthy last year albeit with the smaller sample size because of the injuries but when they had those or two tight ends on the field pardon me they were the most efficient grouping that the Ravens had they were the most efficient uh 12 Personnel grouping in the NFL with 057 EPA per play and what I loved about that grouping in particular 50/50 run pass split when the Ravens had uh three wide receivers on the field they almost entirely passed the ball when they went heavier they ran the ball but when they were in 12 defenses had no tells as to whether or not they were throwing or running the ball and that is where these Baltimore Ravens want to live with defense defenses in a constant state of uncertainty you know mea while you were praising the Ravens and their potential and I was buying in you might have seen the skepticism on Bill's face he's not feeling the same way about the ravens as he tell about the Cardinal baltim I know come on Bill Baltimore is on his list of teams most likely to decline this season even though they finished last season with a 13 and4 record the other teams on Bill's list you see them there include the Steelers Giants Eagles and Browns Bill explain yourself the favorites are still going to be good I just think they're not going to win 13 games that's really hard to do in the National Football League and it's hard to do when you have the offseason the Ravens have they lost three starters along their offensive line on defense javian Clowney Patrick Queen and Mike McDonald of course their excellent defensive coordinator who's now the head coach in Seattle all left this is a team that was so efficient when it came to the Red Zone last year which is tough to keep up year after- year on offense and defense and they had the best turnover margin of any team in football Lamar Jackson threw interceptions on about 1.5% of his passes that's way less than his career rate typically expect him to be right more in the 2 and a half% range which is about five or six more interceptions per season this still going to be a good team but the AF to spee [Music] fore foree fore for me fore spee fore foree spee for spee fore foree speee spee for bye bye
