Why Diego Pavia reminds Virginia Tech Head Coach Brent Pry of Trace McSorley

why does Diego Pavia remind coach Brent pry of a certain successful Big 10 quarterback you are locked on Vandy your daily podcast on the Vanderbilt commodor part of the locked on podcast Network your chart is released today week uh the week one matchup is in just a few days the secondary is filled with veterans The Trenches are set on both sides offense and defense and even though the official announcement of quarterback one has not been made Diego Pavia is likely the starter it has a little or on it um but he nonetheless reminds Virginia Tech head coach Brent pry of Trace murle which is a very high compliment Kurt what do you do you see that comparison that what do you think about that comparison I'm fired up about that that that's a that's a huge huge comparison that's a huge comparison I think it's a great compliment uh he would know at Penn when that kid was quarterback there uh he's got competitive side himself like does so that's a great comparison I like a whole bunch and I hope it fits 100% yeah I do too and I think the plays that he's going to make are very similar I think the the toughness is really kind of what stands out uh yesterday's episode um even though it was with a couple mistakes and the Virginia Tech fans let me know about it um but uh he uh he brings the the intangibles that he's going to bring or the keys to this matchup and I think that you know when you look at Murley and how he played at Penn State it's almost like at times he just took the team on and put them on his back and just LED them March them down the field in big moments and um you know he was a problem solver he was a he was a leader a coach on the field Pavia has all those qualities that I think if Vanderbilt's going to get over the hump in this game I think that's what it's going to take yeah off schedu plays the kids going to make some big plays offed aren't going well maybe getting out at the back door on a pass or or front or front door exit far as reading what he's supposed to be reading maybe it's an RPO maybe it's a run run option you know maybe there's some things there built in where we're doing some power read you mentioned day one that's favorite thing to do and you know that's an effective play that's effective play to get on the corner with uh speed from the backfield position or bringing a guy in motion using what speed that we do have in space so he's GNA make some great plays and uh you know what it's it's it's going to be a thing where we're going to see the offense evolve that whole game and uh facing a very very Stringer defense uh as a defensive head coach as he is at Virginia Tech so we got to work cut out for us but it's exciting time to be a vable Commodore oh absolutely and and and Virginia Tech man they they bring about as big of a challenge as you can get they return uh 20 guys with starting experience on both sides of the ball defensively their front seven is as good as anybody in the country um they uh they led the conference they led the ACC or or they were in the top two in the ACC in uh sacks tackles for loss all the big categories uh Total Defense things like that uh their second although they didn't get a lot of interceptions they're very good they sent a couple of guys to the league but like I guess if you had to look at a weakness on this team that's probably it but it's a bit of a stretch to say weakness but like I I know the Run game is super important but like to me they're gonna have to hit some of these passes down the field if they're going to back Virginia Tech off absolutely I think you hit head I mean right on the head top of the head there if we the balls go downfield and pressure those guys to where they're not always forward and they're able to have to re redirect in the secondary at the safety position at the corner position inside out if we can make them push them back a little bit with some with some threats and uh by doing that you know then we can maybe take a shot here or there but I see as being a very productive offense I see as one is controlling the tempo controlling the game uh if it if it's a 174 game going into the fourth quarter either way I love our chances and that's the type of ball games we're going to have to play and that's the type of games that are winnable for vanderville and in history times that's the way we won football games it's been a back and forth defensive battle playing tough and playing tough together and then making some plays and making some smart plays and uh and doing those type of things since James Franklin was the coach we had some excellent nine 10 win Seasons yeah absolutely and you winning ugly is is is going to be a staple here man and you know and winning ugly is greater than losing pretty to me obviously I want to I don't care how bad we look as long as we win I know that's I know that's pretty difficult to say but um so yeah one of the things I notic about the depth chart too um is you know I think it's important to get guys around Pavia that have built good chemistry with him and one of the guys he built chemistry with him immediately is slot receiver Richie Hoskins Who after all these transfer portal guys came in I was I mean I was dead set on he was pushed pretty much out of the depth chart he wasn't going to get any time he gets the nod at the slot so if they go three receiver sets he's going to be the slot guy um and that's a pretty big deal and I think that's you know his skill set is you know he's very reliable very good route Runner uh intelligent understands you know spacing things like that tough kid uh got some got some pretty good quickness to him I don't think his like downfield speed is is all that but I don't think that's what they need him to do but Richie Hoskins is kind of like that safety net for him and I think that's important to have at the wide receiver spot well I think I think that's a great point the guys they have they have what it takes you know they've been they've been through these battles before they know what each other thinking I mean what better thing to have than be on a big show on a Saturday in the SEC to have your coordinator your former head coach your your former slot receiver a running back or two familiarity for yourself and to know the design of the offense I think I think we're going to be we're going to be very very very competitive and and from the start we're going to be competitive I see us taking some first downs I see I see us being able to be in charge of how we want to dictate the game you know are we going to attack it from an RPO are we going to T it more uh are we going to formation them are we going to shift them are we going to motion and I think they already have those strategies thought out and what they're going to do and uh I see us being a lot like what Georgia Tech's been and they've had a lot of great success as beating Florida State you know they they've been double digit underdogs in five games in the ACC and they won all five of those that's amazing top so I see that's the same model you're talking about a private institution you're talking about an institution that has a small alumni base you're talking about an institution that does not have a huge Stadium we don't have a huge following so I think modeling our program similar to Georgia Tech and their success will be something that our kids can strive toward and I look forward to seeing how they do against Virg te yeah absolutely I that's a phenomenal comparison by the way I I I kind of made mention of that on on yesterday's episode I was impressed with what Georgia Tech was able to do because scheme wise it wasn't like if you kind of watched them it wasn't overly complicated they weren't doing a lot of different stuff they just got in a bunch of different looks motions misdirections they had you know they really capitalized on RPO stuff and then they were able to hit things in the middle of the field um as uh as uh um as Dave mcginness says on the Titans broadcast the Transcontinental routes going across the going across the field and they were able to capitalize on some of that and they were able to capitalize on the back getting out of the back field and and using that as a weapon so just simple things like that and you saw that if you if you go back and rewatch New Mexico State vers Auburn right that's what they did they had they had a little bit of trickery I think they had a trick play on the first on the first series uh down in in the low Red Zone but other than that was all misdirection RPO motion things like that and I think you're going to get a lot of that especially with a strong and quick side on the offensive lines which we're going to talk about here in just a second um I I think you're going to get a lot of counter a lot of power stuff a lot of lot of pulling and things like that Georgia Tech put on a put on a counter clinic man and it was it was outstanding Buster Falkner was was cooking right and I I think one of the things too that that you also see is getting that getting that quick side out in in the quick screen out there throwing little passes and get out in front of the receivers and get back in there screens uh and that that all play counter once you start over playing I mean you know exactly this I'm talking to the choir here on counters put in the tunnel screen in there ties right in you actually can run a lot of counters and set up your play action set up screens there to your wide receivers so it's all it's all a happy marriage there and I see us uh even doing some quarterback counters with the quarterback and even getting spread out and running some single back and bringing guys in motion just like Georgia Tech and using those guys is like the the kick out or the lead through or whatever you know so I'm sure we have all that in the Arsenal it's a matter of just building play on plays and having success and get to a group and then playing solid defense letting cjl letting those guys have experience putting them in they can make a play and if we do those type of things we could have one of the better upsets to start off college football season yeah and it's bright and early too as well so um the offens the offensive line depth this Set uh the defensive line depth this set we'll talk about kind of what that means how they're going to make an impact in the Run game and uh and against the Run game on the defensive side of ball we'll talk about that next all right this episode is brought to you by game the lock on college football podcast who has a chance to make the playoff what teams will cause chaos and their new conferences well everything you need to know all in one place so be sure to follow And subscribe to the lockon college football podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day so Kurt we are talking offensive line okay we've got the strong side we've got the quick side we talked about this philosophy last time we had you all right we talked about how great it is to have guys that are really kind of zeroed in and focused in on their on their strengths right and you you have the these guys that are set up that you can do a lot of different things with right you can set your protection to the to the quick side and match up your quick tackle versus their best pass rusher you can pull those guys you can also set up in a in a counter run situation and pull those guys out on screens there's a lot of different things you can do with the quick side and strong side so the philosophy is there uh your starters of that your starting quick tackle is gunar Hansen he is the incumbent um Keo Wesley another incumbent uh he is the quick guard Steven Lya the transfer from Mississippi State which is great because he's a he's a grad transfer that is bringing in SEC starting experience especially that experience in uh in a situation where you're not the strongest team um and then you have also on your strong side you have delin Xavier castio and you have Chase Mitchell as your strong tackle which as a strong tackle that's a pretty athletic strong tackle um and you know you can do a lot of different things with that but he is a he's a grad transfer he's 6'4 320 probably specializes more in the in the Run blocking scheme so um I think when you when you look at the depth here when you look at everything that they have going on as we wait for for Kurt to come back with uh I think he's going through some technical difficulties or or something like that so we're going to wait for him to come back but um as we're waiting and I think he's back now but as we're waiting Kurt we've got some uh we've got some returning guys uh I I really like the makeup of this offensive line with gunar Hansen as your quick tackle I think that's a home run right there big 65 330 can move has great feet uh Koo Wesley um was once a defensive lineman he's playing the quick guard so you know he can move um 64 317 so you got some big Big Fellas there I love that we didn't have a center and now we have a guy coming in from Mississippi State he's got SEC starting experience um on the offensive line and he knows all the spots um and he played I think Center and guard for Mississippi State so he has experience on the interior uh Delphin Xavier Castillo as your strong guard he's 65 360 just a monster blocking down on a one technique can't can't design that anymore perfectly um and then Chase Mitchell who is a big strong behemoth at the starting at the strong tackle transferred in from Liberty also has really good feat started at left tackle uh for for Liberty so you know he's got you know he's got it in both pass Pro and and being able to block down so I think I think we're really good at the tackle spot I'm really excited about this the starting offensive lineman I worry about the depth a little bit but we're building that but I I love this starting unit yeah I think I think that's going to be one of our strengths of our offense and the beauty of that as you mentioned number of experienced players that have reps at the Collegiate level that have already been in these battles in these wars these trenches and these guys are ready to deliver uh they're going to know what to do and how to do it and come off the football get their back flat they're going to come off and they're going to strike and I think a lot of people are going to be excited to see the physicality that we're going to present with with our offensive line and our tight ends and our double tight ends and our heavy set because that's that's be our makeup I me we're gonna we're gonna smash people and try to you know make make things happen at the point of attack but also you can be creative as you well know uh moving guys in space with rpos with option with uh leaving the guy un you know unblocked and we read him with a handoff or pitch uh things that we're going to be able to do are going to be very very advantageous for our offensive line plus having tight ends that can curl over the ball can can get in the middle of the defense and make create Havoc to those linebackers so that's going to be exciting as well yeah I think one of the biggest mismatches that potentially and this is mostly Cole Spence is 67 260 he's just a mismatch on on anybody U Virginia Tech has some very high quality linebackers their defensive front is amazing um so our our offensive Line's going to have their work cut out for him as far as that goes but this like I said experienced group really can get it done but I I'm I'm digging I'm digging Cole Spence as a weapon on the interior because he he gets matched up against a linebacker it's going to be uh there was a guy that that's similar um that was a matchup nightmare there's just a big Target he wore uh he wore the number zero and now he plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers his name is Darnell Washington um he looked like a he looked like a power forward out there playing and I I I think that's what Cole Spence is going to be he's I mean he was injured last year he could have been that weapon last year but he he uh he had an ACL injury so he is uh you know he's somebody that I'm he's had a phenomenal Camp he's going to be a matchup Nightmare and if Virginia Tech is looking at our offense they're going to have to Circle him yeah I think they're going to have to identify where he's at and I look for us you know you know preap pushing him back pushing short motion bringing him from Outside Inside Out putting him on the wing putting him at a putting his hand in the ground being the edge right there there's a lot of things do with that guy and plus having another tight end as well and then bringing along probably a third tight end I see us being a lot of heavy personnel and trying to get things going get things in that off tackle hole there places and creating some downhill runs for our quarterback downhill runs for our backs and then trying to get speed in space with the power read so you know those are all things that you know really and truly we have probably a great idea how Virginia Tech's going to line up defensively a great idea how Virginia Tech's going to move the ball offensively and really truly Virginia Tech has now they've got to really study Mexico State and doing that is second is is still you you still have Personnel that is already on campus and then we've added as you men the Mississippi State young man from SEC so the talent pool is even better than what they're going to be scouting if and when they are scouting Mexico State offense which I'm sure they've been doing but you even upgrade that with the talent pool that we have being in SEC so it's going to be exciting uh you know it's going to be a thing where uh I'm hoping we're clicking on 100 cylinders at the start but if we're not it'll be a thing we generally progressing and getting better and better and let's keep in mind when those coaches get the players when they come off to the sideline they're going to have capability of seeing instantaneously and making the adjust and also the quarterback having the communication with the quarterback coach and the play call that's going to be crucial as well yeah no doubt and um we're going to we're going to flip over to the defensive side of the ball man this the depth chart is set there it it's very uh very transfer portal heavy there um and the veterans are are lining the secondary they're going to have a you know they're going to have their work cut out for him speaking of which against Kiran drones and it's going to be a fun fun thing to watch this defense kind of go against them so we'll talk about that how the defensive line shakes out how the secondary is going to be uh and how they Faire against Virginia Tech we're going to we're going to be back with Kurt Page here next all right grab a Five Hour Energy Shot to every day at lockon Vandy on all social media platforms at Kurt Page 629 if you want to give him a shout out um the last quarterback to beat Vanderbilt if you guys didn't know that if you knew that then you're a true Vandy fan right so we're we're here chopping it up he's gonna be hopefully with me every uh every Monday night uh going into Tuesday um if not Tuesday is going into Wednesday sometime early in the week um hopefully each and every week so we can either overreact or or talk about what we learned from the week before but right now we're talking Vanderbilt we're talking about the defensive depth chart we're talking about how they're going to Faire how they're going to line up against this defense Kiren drones Kurt is a phenomenal quarterback he's he's coming back this is his first season that he hasn't had to compete for the job he has it nailed down he's got a year under his belt in the system he's got a lot of guys to throw to he is very has a lot of experience however vandy's defense is the strength of this team they're led by transfers cord sidor and zalen wood on on the defensive line Langston Patterson Brian Bri uh Brian Longwell at the line inside linebacker spots and then in the secondary they've got veterans all over the place um they're starting der Ricky Wright who I guess you could say he's a transfer but he transferred out and never went to A&M and came back uh CJ Taylor of course the uh the the star back there then Colby Taylor the big transfer from Wyoming which I dude I as soon as he committed I was like that's a starter he's six foot4 he's long um and he's he's just intimidated like he's just force out there you you just throw him out there and you look out and say okay I I'm going to have a hard time throwing against that because he's just big and imposing so like what stands out to you about this def def I mean we've got Stars everywhere and experience yeah well I think number one thing and we've hit on it numerous times Clark Le's calling the defense Clark will make the adjustments and we're looking forward to to see him get back to work and I know he's looking forward to do his well I'd say the big thing I see for our team will be CJ Taylor making making play the pass rush in the coverage game uh in the back end you know getting everybody straight what what so we don't have any busted coverages I see him being the quarterback of our defense and I see him being all SEC material I see him playing Super Bowl I see him being a high draft pick and I see all that happening because of the success we're going to have defensively uh it's going to be a gradual thing we're GNA build I don't I don't know if we're gonna make a lot of three and outs at the start of the game but I bet you one thing we're going to be playing at the best we're going to be playing our best football game at the end of this first game we are at the start I promise you that because Taylor has the experience he has the wherewithal and think about this he decided to stay because Clark Lee became the defensive coordinator again that's why he wanted to stay because he knew how great the safeties that this guy's coached over his college coaching career has developed them for the NFL and so CJ's way to do that to pay it forward is to play like an all defensive back and I believe he will yeah absolutely I think Clark Lee understands what kind of versatile athlete he has in CJ Taylor and he's going to absolutely love that he's going to be able to play and he's got a really talented I mean he was a preseason freshman All-American uh with Dante Carter so he brings a lot of speed and a lot of athleticism uh to that spot as well and he he's most definitely going to rotate in but what you what you have in CJ Taylor somebody who can move everywhere to Ricky Wright's kind of your bigger physical guy they can play that's athletic enough to play in the back end and then Randon fet's going to be the the star position who's going to be that kind of hybrid outside linebacker line of scrimmage type safety that can kind of cover some slot guys he's good enough to cover slot guys um and just kind of provides matchup problems for them because he's physical long things like that so this defense is g to be the one word I use to describe this defense is [Music] disruptive yeah I think I think that's great think that will be defens football that we're playing that was theand coached at defensive coordinator that's what he at his at Duke all places he's had coach football so disruptive is what we need to for because if you can offenses at where they are weak it then it makes them become vulnerable in those in those spots if you know what where you want BL who you want to what personnel grouping what Tendencies they're going to have and I know we've got them scouted to 10 10 times out that we're ready to go I promise you real quick Kurt how do you stop Kiron drones well I think the best thing do is put put put hands on you know we're gonna have to basic make sure he understands that you know we we're going to put pressure we're going to have things be able to cover cover and and makes make guys not make comfortable off his spot make him move make him do things does not want to do absolutely that's a perfect perfect way of getting after him I I think if you can get him out of his rhythm that is uh that is a perfect way to go so midweek how we feeling here's the betting lines right here Vandy is 13 and a half Point dogs the over under has dropped it was 51 and A2 when I when when the line first came out now it's 48 and A2 is the overrun what are we thinking here well I think I think thinking is Diego and offense is going to control the football and we're going to we're gonna get multiple first downs ultimately some touchdowns and I think that's what's that's that that's going we're as you said earlier we gonna have to embrace winning ugly and that's a beautiful thing you know 1714 winning at 24 to 17 those type of scores you you know I I don't see it being you know uh four or five touchdowns by each team you know I I don't see I don't see that happening I see both teams having strong defenses and both teams playing field position so now the kicking game is impacted you know and that's something that we're gonna have to make sure that we're solid in in those in that phase of the that could be a no yeah for sure for sure for sure for sure so well that's going to do it for us here on the locked on VY podcast on the locked on podcast Network hurt it's as always a lot of fun um and we have to make sure we get you back every week so look forward just uh want to wish him good luck and look forward to see him play Saturday August 31st Virginia Tech all right hey and your Prattville Lions man y'all are y'all are y'all are killing it man yeah we we've started really good we we uh defeated Pike Road they had 11 win season last year uh and so we're off to a really good one and0 start uh we have a arch rival game up store this Friday night we're looking forward to playing uh and being successful again thank you for all the encouraging words and all the support absolutely well hopefully Prattville is 2 and 0 after uh when when when you flip on that Vanderbilt game on Saturday so uh until tomorrow we'll catch you um behave yourselves as always anchor down anchor down [Music]
