got to create havoc on defense you got to win the trenches and they must do and will do anything they can to gain an advantage in the quarterback battle so what does that mean EX exactly the quarterback battle what does that mean so this game is going to feature two really good quarterbacks okay one they both have VAR they both have varying levels of experience Kiron drones has experience at at Virginia Tech in that system so he's got the edge there but here's the caveat Diego Pavia has also has experience in the system but it's not at Vandy so it's like he has experience but he doesn't have experience with this group so it's not quite starting on square one but he's not quite at that level where uh Kiren Kiren U drones is so when you look at this quarterback battle Vandy has to get the edge okay it's going to be a battle of who does what who can get over on what and what who can make the biggest impact in this game so for Diego pavio we'll start with him he's got to take command of this offense okay he's re he's got to go out there and he's got to be able to move the ball because he's going to get a lot of heat this is an experienced defense from top to bottom from front to back this is a this is an extremely experienced and talented defense okay I know I said earlier this week that the secondary was weak I was talking relatively to to their front seven because compared to their front seven yes they're weak but they're not really weak right that's just like if you're going to get a part of their defense that's probably the one to get which that's even going to be tough so deagle Pavia has to find a way to move the ball when the vertical passing attack is not there yet you're going to have to figure out ways to run the ball get creative with that uh and and you're going going to have to find a way you're going to have to you're going to have to put the ball in tight windows in in the passing game you're going to have to be good with and patient with nickel and diming because that's what it's going to take that is the first key so I'm going to give you a list here real quick okay I got five on it so these are some keys to to success for Vanderbuilt uh Pavia must find a rhythm so that means that Pavia has to be able to catch throw on time receivers have to be able to help him get Rhythm by getting separation running the routes at the correct depth things like that they have to figure out a way to get in a rhythm between rpos Run game play action and and drop back passing Pavia has to be accurate Pavia has to be on point he's gonna make some tight throws he's gonna have to there's not going to be much wide open stuff unless they give some sort of look or some sort of shift or motion that's going to create space for them I just don't think it's going to be there so you have to figure out how to make that happen you have to manufacture points you have to take it and and you have to take advantage of the situations when they present themselves and they will present themselves at some point in this game it's whether or not Vandy decides they want to take advantage of it because these situations present themselves in every game for every team it's just what team takes advantage of those more so Pavia has to get in a rhythm if he can get into a rhythm he can move this off offense down the field and they can they can put up a decent amount of points so so to speak but you have to you have to start somewhere you have to get that first first down early uh preferably on the first drive to get settled in and to find that to find that Rhythm right then you just move on move down the field play the field position battle control the clock all those good things so you have to have command you have to have rhythm command is knowing okay okay I the defense is giving me this I have to I have to hit him with this to counter all right command is oh crap I'm getting knocked around a little bit I got to settle down I've got to get my offensive line in check because they're blitzing me from the right side they're hitting me every time I've got to be able to manage the protection and get those guys right that's command of the offense being able to coach those guys through those situations he's got to be able to do that if he does that I think Vandy you're GNA see Vandy very successful if he struggles to get command and to get rhythm of this offense it's not going to be so pretty for Vanderbilt and you're G to see you're going to see this team struggle mightily to try to get things going because you can't manufacture it in the third quarter like that's too little too late like you have to you have to gain command within the first couple of series or it's going to be a long day because if Virginia Tech comes out with command and come out on a rhythm it's going to be even longer of a day and you're going to be sitting here going oh crap we're on the wrong side of a of a blowout so get in Rhythm defensively okay we have to get an advantage in the quarterback game so what does that look like from the defensive perspective how does the defense gain gain us an edge gain Vandy an edge in the in the quarterback battle well they got to get pressure on drones they've got to get pressure on Kiron drones they've got to be able to they've got to be able to affect him in in various ways they got to push the pocket they've got to contain him because he can run he's a really good runner something about running quarterbacks of Virginia Tech he's a really good runner so they got to contain him they they got to contain the rushan they got some experienced guys um they have experiened they don't necessarily experience together and they don't have experience necessarily with with uh Clark Lee but they do have experience playing college snaps so they have that going for them at least but they have to be able to affect the rush whether they contain him push the pocket from the middle and just just disrupt his timing uh they need to get hits on him they need to they need to get sacks on him all right defense needs to be able to and this this is what's troubling um I Heard Clark Le's press conference um his his van his uh Virginia Tech week press conference and he was talking about a little bit about last year Vandy could only play one coverage last year just think about that you're an SEC team and you're in one coverage I'm going let that sink in for a second that is atrocious okay so I think if they can I think if they had the ability to play multiple coverages they'll be a little bit further ahead but in order to in order to be able to take advantage of your um your veteran secondary you have to get pressure you have to affect pressure and you have to try to get it with your front four um but if you have to Blitz sometimes you know that it it is what it is you got to be aggressive George Tech was aggressive against Florida State against DJ ul and they got them somewhere and drone you know but I got news for Vanderbuilt drones is better than DJ La so Kiren drones really good quarterback have to get pressure on him have to have to get in his face have to knock him down H even even just not allowing him to follow through fully not allow him to step into a throw make him make him flush out of the pocket you know force them force him to get his eyes down just even a little bit will also help it that those kind of things even the very very little things I think a lot of people don't realize throw these quarterbacks off right it's it's the little things guys it's it's it's getting him off his rhythm if you can get him off his rhythm no quarterback is immune to being being rattled none Tom Brady even got off his rhythm occasionally not much that's why he's probably the greatest to ever play but quarterbacks are not immune they're humans they're not immune to being rattled they're not immune to being off their Rhythm so if Vanderbilt wants any sort of any sort of success if you don't get pressure on drones if you don't contain him and you allow him to gash you for big gains on scrambles or quarterback designed runs and you let him throw from a clean pocket he's going to kill you he's going to absolutely kill you and he's going to Tor you and he's going to have fun doing so and you're going to hear whatever the whatever the Hokey cheers are in the stand you're gonna hear all of that crap if you don't pressure drones you got to get in his face gotta knock him down gotta hit him gotta bump him gotta talk some trash to him whatever whatever it takes to get him off his game you got to get him off his game and you got to be able to support Diego Pavia in uh in getting a rhythm and and getting getting command of this offense because it's a home game and hopefully the home crowd will be there uh to support so um but to be honest this game's going to come down to the trenches okay this game is going to come down to trench warfare how does love it and this is uh this is awesome so trench warfare okay keys to the game trench warfare I think this is this is important because in any matchup especially in SEC but in any matchup it always starts and ends with the trenches because that's what's going to help number one and number two in the scenario right the quarterback battle it's ultimately going to come down to the trenches so this is this is more of a this is merely a checklist here okay so trenches so what what what constitutes trench warfare okay that is the matchups of vy's oine verse Virginia Tech's defensive front I'll count line I'll count inside linebackers on this I I'll count anything in the Box all right that's vandy's box verse Virginia Tech o line okay and then um yeah so those are those are your two matchups right so you got you got Virginia Tech defensive box vers V's o line and you have uh vandy's defensive box vers Virginia Tech's o line okay so here here's here's the deal okay if Vanderbilt's going to move the ball we'll start we'll start with fy's offensive line okay they've got the strong side they've got the quick side they've got the nice little philosophy going on there I really like it I think it helps some special with a group that doesn't feature Talent on paper as other offensive lines but you've got some guys that fill those roles and anytime you got guys doing their roles perfectly uh and effectively you're GNA be you're going to be in good shape so Vanderbilt's got to be able to run the ball now going to this philosophy is interesting because now you have it set up to where where you can Shuffle guys around to make sure your pullers are always quicker guys with better feet that are physical um you can ensure that your pass Pro um is always geared towards your quick side to where all your all your strong side guys has to do is essentially hunker down and you get some good matchups there but as soon as Virginia Tech figures that out they'll probably sh some things around which will probably start a chess match between uh VY o line and Virginia Tech's defensive front so um I I just I I think this is an important battle because so much of what V does offensively is going to be in the Run game and can't really do Run game without an offensive line I I've tried it where some of the places that I've coached we've tried to run the ball without an offensive line and it you know I know you're going to be shocked when I say this but doesn't work so they have to if vandy's going to get any sort of momentum going this is I think in the trenches this is the most important battle because Virginia Tech their defensive front is amazing lots of experience great pass rush tough against the run and they they're just good they're physical they're big they've got guys coming in it's it's it's a very talented group so F's going to have to figure out ways to to get the ball going in the Run game and I think it's going to have to be rpos I think it's going to have to be formations and I think it's going to be moving those formations and and shifting those looks around getting guys getting them set up to where they're trying to guess where the where the pollers are coming from and V's goingon to have to do things that break those Tendencies and they're going to have to do things to move guys around uh to be able to set the offensive line lineman up with uh with the best possible surface to block whether it's running Duo inside zone or stretch outside Zone any sort of options things like that so um for Vandy any time they can get somebody isolated in Conflict whether it's one to two players where you have like a RPO triple where you're reading a a first level Defender and you're reading a second level defender in in the in the third phase of the of the option play or the RPO play um you have to figure you know you have to figure things out like that to get to get guys isolated to where they're almost blocking the M themselves and so to be able to win on The Trenches is finding ways to create double teams at the point of attack finding ways to create as much of a numbers Advantage as you possibly can get and finding ways to be able to get the ball out on the edge get the ball out in space and just move move move move move right because you can't throw the ball down the field you can't have any semblance of a vertical passing game if you can't protect so they got to be able to protect they got to be able to do do that um on the defensive front on the defensive line Vandy has got to be able to to puncture gaps they've got to be able to destroy blocking angles and they have to keep the linebackers clean as best they possibly can part of what a good defensive line is in this scheme is being able to do just that keeping the linebackers clean so they can scrape and make plays clogging up all the interior Gap so the so the linebackers can play inside out and Chase down anything in the C gaps um and leave the leave the D gaps and the edges to uh to your outside linebackers and just being able to kind of kind of disrupt things on the inside because if you can disrupt guards trying to pull and things like that it creates piles and piles advant if if you can create a pile Advantage goes to the defense because the runner has to stop or slow down gives your Pursuit time to close in and usually those runs don't go anywhere unless you're Barry Sanders which I don't think they have Barry Sanders but this is going to be a fun fun match up to kind of see how Clark Ley achieves that on the defensive line I'm excited about it I think this is going to be one of those matchups to where you have a really good defensive front for Vandy that they rotate a lot of people just because just because you're not the starter doesn't mean you're not going to play a ton um they don't have any superstars on that side of the ball but I think Cordes sidor and Zen wood could possibly turn into I'm not going to say Superstar but they could turn into Stars um in in in that unit and they could be two guys that could really really affect what this game is because Cordes sidor is going to bring the energy and he's a good player to boot Zen Wood's GNA bring the energy he's a good player to boot and the rest of them are just going to fall in and that's going to benefit Langston Patterson that's going to benefit Brian Longwell off from the inside linebacker perspective and that's going to benefit if the defensive line can do their thing that might limit the people being able to get out on The Edge to block so that's going to that's going to really affect the razors the outside line the outside linebackers the star um the safe's coming down to fill for the run it's gonna it's going to positive affect those guys so it all honestly if the defensive line can do their job it's going to it's going to have a positive effect on everybody across the board because now everybody can get to their get to their landmarks and do their jobs pretty cleanly so when the trenches when whenn whenn on the trenches you have to be able to win on The Trenches if you're going to have any shot at all at at creating havoc on uh on defense and Havoc plays are tackles for loss sacks um takeaways things like that hurries even uh things that disrupt the rhythm of the quarterback getting pressure on drones is also ties into to point number four here uh getting you know creating momentum with Havoc plays because the psych ology up here in the Dome the psychology of Havoc plays is tremendous man just think of the fire just think of the juice when somebody somebody gets a takeaway just think of how excited everybody gets just think about how deflated the other side gets when you when you get a takeaway when you get a big sack on a third down let's say the ball's right around Midfield and if they get this first down now they're not far from scoring range you get a big sack on Third and long they have to punt now your defense is jacked up and your offense has a little bit of confidence right it's all about the Havoc place it's all about creating that positive momentum it's all about gaining an edge mentally with Point number four that's where you gain your mental Edge if you can do those things with a with a defense that's going to play aggressively then you're going to win you have a chance of winning if you can take the ball away your chances of winning go way up okay like th those are the things that Clark Lee likes to do that's the thing he thrives on especially third down pressures he he's really really good at that he was really good at that at Notre Dame that's one of the Staples of his defense is is the their abilities to get to the quarterback and affect the quarterback's Rhythm Kiren drones not Caleb drones Kiren drones is an amazing quarterback he is somebody that can really hurt you if you allow him to so creating those Havoc plates is getting in his head if you can get some takeaways at his expense even then that'll go a long way couple couple of good picks early on and it might be all she wrote so um but we're going to talk about special teams uh and how that some keys to Victory doing this a little backwards here this week uh I've got a crossover with locked on acc coming out um so we're gonna I'm going to go ahead and give you the keys a day early let you digest them let you digest the pick so you kind of know where where you want to go so the last key the final key okay we've had a quarterback battle right for Pavia it's got to find Rhythm and command for for the defense they have to affect drones they have to give they have to help give Vandy the edge in the quarterback battle by affecting drones in various ways you have to win in the trenches and you have to gain momentum with Havoc plays another way to gain momentum is creating Havoc plays in special teams and scoring points right so you have to win the Special Teams battle and that goes just beyond making field goals that's that's flipping the field in the punting game that's covering well on kickoff that's gaining yards and and getting good field position on kickoff and punt returns uh that's maybe getting a blocked punt or two taking advantage of a poor snap or or trying to force the punter into shanking one uh to give you good field position but it's just winning those special teams battles that's going to get this team over the hump score points when you when you're in the when you're in range and try try to sneak a try to sneak a turnover in there try to try to get you a takeaway in there somewhere and maybe try to gain a possession through special teams with a little bit of trickeration so those are your keys to success those are what those are some things that Vandy must do I think if they do these fine five things I think they have a shot they have a really really good shot um to if they do these five things because their star player will be out of it mentally and uh the momentum will be there and will be there in favor of Vanderbilt so uh I got five on anyway um so we got about we got a couple minutes left so I'm going to take you through uh some of the picks that I made uh and it's always going to include the Vandy game um but uh I always make two additional picks I'm gonna give you three picks for the for the weekend I could spend a whole show doing just nothing but picks but here you go presented by our friends at FanDuel sports book uh my picks of course Vandy plus 13 and a half not because the not because the name of the show was locked on Vandy I actually believe it and I know you don't believe that I believe it but I do I think there's been a lot of changes with this VY team I think Clark Lee calling uh getting taking getting and taking control of the defense is going to be one of the best things to happen to this team I think they have a really good shot um if not for anything else to cover this game I I think if fandy loses it's going to be by less than two touchdowns which will give them the cover I think if they do all the things that right that I just talked about they have a chance to actually win out right so if you're really feeling bold take Vandy on the on the money line that's a really really bold bet so I I like that um not just because like I said not because the show is locked on Vandy all right my next pick is Georgia um I I feel pretty good about this one because Georgia has one of the most loaded rosters that I've seen in the Kirby Smart era um and I think this line is pretty tight and I I think they're just significantly better than Clemson and I I do think it'll be a tight game early on I I I think Clemson has does have a really talented defense and Kate Club Nick is is a is a quality quarterback but I just think there's something that Georgia likes to do and this started in 2021 with the the defense that had like Jordan Davis and Jaylen Carter and those guys you know the F the seven first rounders they had well I think they have a tendency to Avalanche you a little bit overwhelm you a little bit and I think they'll do that to Clemson um after a while you'll be like whoa where did this game go because it's gonna slip right through your fingertips um but if you are a fan of Vandy you will not be watching this game you'll be watching the highlights of this game because Vandy and Georgia play the exact same time so I'm taking Georgia minus 13 and a half I think they cover pretty pretty easily um although it won't look it won't appear EAS early on uh and lastly Texas A&M minus 2 and a half I really like this spread it's a really close spread Notre Dame is good but I just don't quite trust them on the road at Kyle Field I think Texas A&M is a really really good team under new leadership so they're trying to figure some things out Marcus Freeman is a very very good quality high quality coach love everything that he does up there love everything that he stands for I just think it's a tough matchup in a tough environment and usually in these really close spreads I tend to favor the home team if it's if it's this close because I think both teams are are quality there's there's another world where I'd pick Notre Dame and feel good about it um but ultimately I think Texas A&M is going to pull this one out I think they win by I think they can win by at least a field goal if this was a six and a half point spread I would take Notre Dame all the way but since it's two and a half give me the Aggies there so those are the three picks that I have uh for uh for this weekend so bet them I I say bet them at your own risk um if you win a lot of money um just find me on vinmo and you can uh you can send it to me for uh it's kind of like a kind of like a consulting fee I guess but no in all seriousness um I feel pretty good about those picks I'm I'm G to play um I'm GNA play four plays on that I'm gonna play each one individually and I'm G play a parlay as well just in case I hit all all of them so th those are what I'm going with there but anyway that's all I got for you guys today um I'm going to go ahead and wish you a happy weekend I'm going to uh a happy first weekend of college football um I'm sure I'll do so tomorrow as well but um have a great weekend enjoy the games um enjoy the picks hopefully you
