#134 - The Final 8 & All-Australian Squad Revealed

[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] hello everybody and welcome back to the up the guts podcast joining you as always is myself the host Trent Deon or some of you might know me as tricky as I'm most commonly known as when on this podcast but jez what a week it has been and now it's time for the serious stuff we have eight teams left and we're going into finals we get the week off I don't know if I'm big fan of the Week by maybe the Wild Card round will come in next year I'm not too sure but we now have the eight teams we have the eight teams set in Sydney Port Adelaide jalong jws Brisbane the Bulldogs hon and Carlton are the remaining teams who will play off in the finals with the first game being in a week's time on this it's a Thursday night footy is back the fifth of September but there was also another thing that was announced this week so obviously we'll go over what we learned from this week and the team of the week am Marti party 22 as well as um as well as what we will go through now is the just trying to see something think no he is in so what we're going to go through now is the all Australian Squad was named so let's go through who was named and who would possibly was stiff to miss out so let me just load that one up as we go latest news here we go I've already got it open so the all Australian Squad is announced now the people will go by club by Club Adelaide had no one named let me know if you think someone should be named Brisbane had a total of five people named so uh Captain Harris Andrews who's a two time all Australian 29220 all Australian Squad oh yeah two time Australian we also have Joe Daner uh Loy Neil and cam Raina who has never previously been all Australian been rewarded for his great more second half of the season I reckon and uh Dane Zoro uh who has been a one uh two time australi I believe I'll look at it there uh then Carlton had the four Patrick Crips Charlie kerno Harry mcai Jacob weering who surprisingly enough has never been um an all Australian but he's been in the squad a total of four times he's been it the last four years a matter of fact Collingwood had two people Darcy Cameron been rewarded for his exceptional season in the rck for the pies i' never previously been Australian and Nick day C the other one SN just the one with Zack Merritt freem manal had five um Andrew brayshaw Jordan Clark Luke Ryan Caleb song and Hayden young who's Al Jordan Clark and and um Hayden Young have never previously been all Australian uh the cats have three Jeremy Cameron Max Holmes who never previously been all Australian and Tyson stangle go car have the two both have never been all Australian in Noah Anderson and Sam Collins the Giants have three um Brent Daniels who's never been an Australian Jesse Hogan after winning the Coleman with 69 goals never previously been all Australian and Loy Whitford who was all Australian in 2018 the Hawks have three MIM Mo D Ambrosio been rewarded for the exceptional season uh he's never previously wi Australian Dylan Moore another one being rewarded um there previously been all Australian and James sic who's been all who was all Australian last year melin had the one um in Max gor who 1 two 3 four five is a six times all Australian North Melbourne have two both never previously been Australian in Harry shazand my pick for the Ruckman for the rck role and rck position sorry in the Australian team Tristan Cherry Port Adelaide have three Zack Butters Jason hor France who's never been Australian and Dan Houston backs up he's um Australian um laser from last year Richmond have no one Jack Sinclair for the Saints who's a two-time Australian Sydney have four Nick Blake never previously been Australian Errol Gordon Isaac Keeney and Chad Warner who's never previously been Australian the Eagles have two Jerry mcgoverin and Jake wman who's never previously been all Australian breakout season for Jake wman and the Bulldogs have three Marcus bonon py Bailey Dale and never previously been Australian in Adam chalor so let me know who you guys think was a big miss out in that all Australian Squad members and who do you think will go through I personally think the one person that may have missed out uh was from the go Coast Suns I really think Sam Flanders is moved um especially he started the first half of the year the halfback but even when he moved into the Midfield I thought the way he was able to impact the scoreboard and still use the ball consistently well I thought s flers was really stiff to miss out on being um involved and added to the all Australian Squad member team I didn't necessarily think he was going to make the final team but I thought he um had a case to be in the squad let me know what you think about that as we move on to the games and we also have our tipping winners and our super coach winners so we'll announce that as well but we move on to the games of the week so Friday night it was Melbourne V Collingwood once excuse me uh and it was the pies you got the job done by 46 points picket and St strip kick two each for the demons Nick Doos Bobby Hill Cameron and Linsky all kick two for the pies Nick deos had 40 dispos goem with two goal he two goals nine clearances uh 11 marks 10 inside 50s 11 scorer Roman 675 M gain a great game by him his brother Josh deos off the halfback flank also had 40 80 between him going at 82% efficiency Linsky also had 30 with his two goals 12 marks and eight score rements and leading the way from Melbourne was Salem with 26 disposals and seven rebound 50s now talking point is has Nick deos done enough with that three vote poll to uh win it this year with stiff last year obviously going down with injury in the latter half of the year but has he done enough it's going to be a really interesting Brown L medal count so let um I just think it's going to be I don't know I feel like he might have done enough but Crips I don't think Crips doesn't get the three he had a great third quarter on the on the weekend but uh it Crips and then it's probably bondon p and Neil are probably the other ones fighting for it we moved to Saturday and this was just a thumping hon defeated North Melvin at laest by 124 points still Mo kick four Watson Cho and McDonald all kick three de Ambrosio Sicily Bruce de and ginan all kick the two leading the way for the kangaroos was the skiar in simin with three goals nuk had 35 at 89% efficiency 10 clearances a goal four goal assists and 15 score rements D brosio you can see why he was in the all austral he's been named in the all Australian Squad he had 31 to goong with two goals five clearances and 10 score BS James Sicily hit the scoreboard multiple times he's 24 two goals seven marks eight intercepts seven rebound in 662 M gain just doing what cly does Davis YC was the leading disposal get up for the kangaroos with 26 and 609 me gained simkin also had 25 to go along with three goals and nine tackles Cherry also had 25 to go along with 35 hit outs and 13 clearances has Masson de Ambrosio been the pickup one of the pickups of the Season or if not the pickup of this season obviously we mentioned he's been being named in the all Australian squad team and he's just been really really good for the Hawks like s um didn't really make a fight about letting him go and I was just really shocked so and they're using him a bit more off a wing and the way he's doing like he's averaging 20.8 disposals a game uh 4.9 marks and he's also hitting the scoreboard so as masso D ambroso I think he's made a really good asset to the Hawks uh lineup with his run and ball uh disposal efficiency from off foot as we moved from the move to the other game uh ju another thumping was jalong and West Coast 20 uh West jalong getting done by 93 points 2612 168 defeated 11975 it was Jeremy Cameron kicked nine Ole Henley OE Henry kicked four Neil stangle and Stanley all with the two for the Eagles Waterman darling and Crips and Reed all kick two disposal wise homes also in the all Australian Squad had 26 at 85% efficiency with three goal assist and 764 met gain Patty dfield really coming into his own real late in the season showing why Chris Scott manages his play as the best he had 25 with seven clearances a goal and two goal assists bores had 24 92% efficiency to go with six clearances and a goal uh Zack Gaffrey also had 24 at 96% efficiency 10 marks and 10 around 50s leading the wave of the West Coast was C with 25 six clearances and three goal assists Hutchinson also had 24 six clearances a goal and two goal assists it was the Jeremy Cameron show and he's really started to coming right before finals but the worry is Tom Stewart went down with an injury now and Lawson humph now Chris Scott said they'll be right to play but a hamstring is never what you want so Tom Tom SCH was stubbed out with precaution with a title of tstring and Lawson hum's also set out the second half of car issue now they're both Tom sh more but Lawson Humphrey since coming to the side has been really influential to the Jong side both driving that run off halfback so be interesting to see if they get up uh will be really crucial to that jalong defense and the Run they get from up towards the ground into the for line to get into the hands of the likes of Jeremy Cameron Richmond V goal car um Richmond 10666 we're defeated by go Coast 1410 94 by 28 points B Daniel rioli both kicked two for the Tigers while long kicked three Flanders Graham looses all kicked the two preia had 33 with five clearances Dan rioli had 32 goals and 562 M gain Tero had 30 to go along with 14 tackles Loston 26 88% efficiency eight marks and nine intercepts and short had 25 excuse me at 96% efficiency for the stuns Miller had 31 to go along with two goal assists and nine score elements Anderson had 30 at 80% efficiency five and five five clearances and a goal fan has also had 29 at 86% efficiency two goals uh six clearances and three goal assists and 14 score involvements while ra also had 29 eight clearances nine tackles and seven score involvements taret Fair Target farewell Premiership players Dustin Martin Dylan Grimes and Marlon pick it I don't we've also we've given Dusty the plance he has but I think the way Dylan Grimes held up that defense when Alex rans retired and more importantly when Alex rant went down before retiring obvious because the thing about grindes was he could play on all sides he wasn't a massive per um massive in height but he could play on tall and he could play on small he was so crucial to that Richmond defense in those Premiership winning years so he will be missing he had a great career as IND Dusty and obviously Maron picket what a story the debut on the Grand Final and was possibly nearly won the Norman Smith medal on that day just falling Short Saturday night we had Brisbane and Idan at the gabber and it was Brisbane kicking um 1121 87 defeated Idan 10767 Lowman kicked the three Cameron uh lman and Cameron sorry both kicked three while Langford kick three for the bombers and Stringer kick two Neil who's going to make a run making the brown medal even more interesting had 40 a goal seven seven clearances and two goal assists and 11 score moments Ash really finding his feet 30 15 marks and seven score score involvements mcclugage had 29 to go along with five clearances and nine score involvements Dunley had 28 at 82% efficiency nine clearances and eight tackles just a real ball in that Midfield Dunley is uh Zoro had having a probably a career best season 28 at 86% efficiency 10 marks at 65 me this game and as we mentioned before is in the all Australian Squad so be interesting to see if he gets a spot on that half back halfback flank when the teams are announced as for the bombers another person who's had a great season will win their best and Fest is Zach Merritt 37 disposals one goal n and nine score rolls he in his farewell game had 34 at 85% efficiency and 12 12 intercepts mcgr also soorry mcgr had 34 nine intercepts and 11 rebound 50s Nick Martin 28 to go along with a goal and 11 marks and Arie Roberts had 28 and seven intercepts which is one to look out for the future for Essence that's looking good will the accuracy be the downfall of the lions like we've seen their set shots 11 goals 21 just isn't good enough and will it be the reason that they don't win the flag or or at least make it on Grand final day Eric hiwood in front our goal is waywood Joe Dano is Joe Dano he'll kick the he'll kick the really hard ones and miss an absolute C cam R missed some Logan Morris young player I know some but will uh accuracy cost lines could it's happened a fair few times this season as we move to the other Saturday night game with Sydney V Adelaide and it was the swans getting a 31o um victory over Adelaide 183 121 defeated 13 12 90 31 points go Parker and McDonald both kicked three for the swans Amari Blakey and Gordon with the two for the crows Sil Thor and Walker no Sil Thor and Taylor Sorry kick three uh Walker kicked the two as well Blakey had 32 at 81% efficiency to go along with two goals 14 marks seven intercepts seven score moments and 673 M gain Roberts had 31 her reckons had a real solid year at 80 87% efficiency and Mills I'm really finding his feet down the Half Back Down the half back line robing the Midfield since coming back from his injury that occurred in the preseason had 27 at 8 85% efficiency 10 marks seven intercepts and eight score evolvements Matt Crouch led the way for the Matt Crouch and Roy lead both had the way for the crows with 28 in disposal count while Dawson Skipper had 25 with one goal six tackles and eight score moments and cigo had 25 to go along with eight inside 50s uh Luke Park Luke Parker continues his form and it's going to be really crucial coming into the final series I think they found something by bringing in Luke Puck he's just so hard out and he so the way he's been able to hit the scoreboard and then go in and pinch it in the Midfield cuz you know he's going to put his head over it and get that and get that clearance out but the way he's hitting the scoreboard is probably something we haven't seen by luk I haven't seen from Luke Parker before in his career obviously playing predominantly in the Midfield not forward um but this is really really exciting and it's heads off to Luke Parker who struggled to find um some time find a spot in this team but I feel like it's a real weapon having having someone down there that you know is going to give it 120% go hard at it but uses the ball well and is able to hit the scoreboard and as I mentioned before Kell Mills finding his feet off half back which is good to see but I think Luke Luke Parker could be one of the secret weapons for the swans going into the 2024 final Series so keep a look out for that one uh Sunday we had the Bulldogs and the Giants at Ballarat do not even get me started AFL why would you host a Sunday round 24 Sunday game with a rivalry like the Bulldogs and the Giants at Mars stadium in Ballarat it's just appalling like seriously get your [ __ ] together but it was the Bulldogs who won this by 37 points 1414 98 defeating 9761 Richards Darcy Norton all kick two while green Hogan and Cadman kicked two for the Giants uh Richards had 29 uh to go along with two goals eight inside 50 eight score RS and 556 M gain Dale at 27 as well at 89% efficiency and one goal seven rebound 50s and 569 M gain luy Whitfield had 42 off halfback at 86% um 86% efficiency nine marks seven intercepts nine rebound 50s and 710 M gain Tom Green had 37 to go along with a goal and seven clearances Callahan at 26 to goong with five clearances played a bit on Bon P did a reasonable job there as well and uh Josh C had 26 to go along with five clearances and 700 and meters gain has Ed Richard's moved into the Midfield been one of the best if not the best um moves in 2024 hats off to Luke beverage Tom libertore went down and we didn't know where he was going to go with that we thought all right he's just going to bring Jack McCrae back in playing for the Midfield but he said no I like the look of Ed riches who was looking who was looking very very solid half back the way using the ball with intercept and he's like I'm going to put him into the midfield for a bit of difference a bit of speed and a bit of class and I think this might be the move of 20124 has really helped the Bulldogs pressing the ball forward because obviously you got bondon P has that um has a bit of class Adam tror gets his bulk touches but Rich Richards has class and speed and breaks away and he's been a real surprise packet so hats off to Luke beverage from making that move and not just going back to what he knows but being willing to make that change with Ed Richards uh Colton V K out now what a game 11874 the blues were defeated by sta 11176 AK is the only multiple goal kicker for the blues with two uh Higgins mem and wood all kick two for the Saints Newman had 20 no sorry 35 at 86% efficiency 160 marks 7 intercepts and 638 M gain um hu had 32 with 84% efficiency one goal and six tackles let me just readjust myself here guys uh and Walsh had 32 nine clearances seven tackles two goal assists and seven score RS he was so he was so influential especially in that last quarter running it out and cryp who had a massive third quarter had 30 go 18 of them contested eight clearances and nine tackles sin Clair's had another solid season been rewarded being added to the all Australian Squad had 28 eight marks and seven score rollment and one player I'm really excited for in the future has really come on this year is n Wang Malo he also had 25 now you thought I would talk about obviously the Jack Higgin snap um the Jack hi snap coming into it it could have ruined the uh blue Seasons luckily in the end as we get on to the next game didn't but the one thing I want to talk about is does this prove why this season the Saints for 95% of the season have been so disappointing when you putting performances like that backto back but then you um Chuck up garbage like you have earlier in the year you did a really good performance against Collingwood in round two but since then they' just been slow didn't want to move the ball quick and now they it's like they've they've taken the the training wheels off and then have gone and done this but it's just too little too late like they've shown that in the future it's something special there and Ross has it down packed but it's just disappointing that it takes when the season's over for them to bring this out so I don't know what to say if they're want to look at for 2025 because they're just too inconsistent you just can't read them and the last game of the round was freem manal vport adelade at opta Stadium 913 67 uh were defeated by 3987 Vos the only modle goalkeeper for the Dockers with two uh riy with three and Horn Francis georgis with the two for the power uh brayshaw had 32 five clearances and seven tackles uh Wines had 31 six clearances and seven score rollment Butters had 26 16 of them contested six clearances and uh SC moment and a talking point for this game is is Jason Horn Frances built for September I get it okay I get it he's 21 years old I get it but the way he's really impacting games I believe I heard a stat today his last four games or last six games he's had 20 plus disposals and kicked two um two goals that's an outstanding stat and he's just all class and but the way he can push forward he's really hard to be one-onone everyone's comparing him to the likes of Patrick Dangerfield but thing he's got over Patrick Dangerfield is he kicks the ball a lot better than Patrick Dangerfield so I feel like this September if Porter going to go far Jason hor Fran is going to be the reason so maybe watch out for if that's a player that teams go after because we know he does have a bit of a temper as does Butters but let's move on to this week's team of the week now this week's team of the week I'm going to start off with the full back line got Nick Newman Harry himberg and Nick Lon half backline Josh Jos James Sisley and Loy Whitfield Center Line U massim mod D brosio Nick deos and Patrick Linsky half for line Conor McDonald Kyle Langford and Jack Gan full forward line Ole Henry Jeremy Cameron and Dylan Moore Midfield Jordan site was exceptional for the power Sam Walsh and John yukim massive game for John yukim uh interchange got simpin uh Patty Crips Ed Richards and sha Mana so there's you I'm still deciding we I'm going to continue this but I think that might be it for the teams of the week so it'll be interesting to um see we'll probably continue the M P22 at least for another week or two but um yeah so it'll be interesting to see when we move forward but now let's get into the segment that we know everyone is waiting for and I know I'm waiting for just so I can hear this 22 let's go now it's a real tough one this week in my personal opinion because I would say Jeremy Cameron after his bag of nine but Jeremy Cameron is already in the squad so I've got a real decision Mak out of two players I've got one in my mind but it's just finding that second play and I don't want to make it two of the same team and a lot of these people here uh actually you know what I got it it's the first player I already had in mind it's from the HW from football club I mentioned was this the pickup of the season it's masimo D Ambrosio so well done to Massimo D Osio and while we're at it uh notes have a look last week who were last who was it last week almost forgot who it was last week as we load this up oh yeah the winner last week was Sam Darcy pretty um unanimous decision from his seven goals so picks this week first one master m d ambroso and the next one this guy on a night out and on the on the night out he brings so much energy but on the field he brings that so much energy too and he kicked the winner in the S ker carton game it's Jack Higgins so well done to them two mimo D Ambrosio or Jack Higgins the poll will go live and that's going to just about wrap up the end of our preseason predictions we just need to figure out sometimes that I can get will on the same page as me but um not the same page soorry cuz he started uni um back and yeah obviously he lives in the city so it's a bit hard to come drive down so we're just going to organize a certain day of that and we're going to go over our preseason predictions and see what we got right what we got wrong and
