Ohio State Fall Camp Insider: Is The Buckeye Defensive Line Finding Enough Depth?

Introduction and Podcast Opening hello everybody Welcome to the Buckeye weekly podcast I am Tony German here as always with Tom more Tom how's it going well Tony I'm feeling quite old because we found out tonight that Ohio State defensive tackles Ty Le Williams and Ty Hamilton both of whom have first names that start with T have decided to call themselves TNT so one of the reporters on the beat asked oh are you familiar with the ACD song ACDC song TNT neither of them were I didn't crumble up and turn into dust right at that moment but I feel like it might happen soon yeah you know what's even more offensive about that this is a defense that relies upon ACDC on third Downs it's true and for them to not know the entire catalog to not celebrate the entire ACDC catalog I feel like is something I don't know if that's the coaches you GNA put that on Larry Johnson or is that a Ryan day thing on down is that a Mickey Mar thing because they play a lot of music in the in the weight room I everybody is to blame now I'm I'm thinking about how you would describe ACDC it's it's the one with the big Bell that band like you would describe Jackal as the one with the chainsaws like it's ACDC as the one with the big Bell Jack tall with the flute sure anyway we should probably talk about football soon that's fine that's fine and today we spoke with the defensive line Larry Johnson and a handful of defensive ends hand handful Ohio State Defensive Line Insights of defensive tackles and I think uh the messaging that I I'll just start with this from Larry Johnson is that feels very good about the defensive end depth feels they they've got five that can play and they'd like to make it six and Josh mckin He said Has Come Out of Nowhere essentially and is pushing to be that sixth guy thinks he kind of he he has five defensive tackles that he feels good about would like to get to six I'm not entirely convinced what that means though because we know they're still trying to find like who are their top four basically Kate McDonald probably three hero can probably four but are they getting are those two getting to the point where they can play as he said you know 25 to 35 snaps and not just be able to do that but be able to go from one snap to 60 in a game should something go down so that's where they're progressing right now and that's just sort of going to be a gradual progression I think progression there is the right word where it's not going to be an immediate thing it's going to be you're earning a bigger role you start the season with a bigger role you had last year and then you continue to show that you can do it and you continue to show that you can play continue to show you can hold up in these situations there were several guys who they talked about having put on 20 30 pounds Josh mickens was one for example where he's put on I think Larry Johnson said pushing 30 pounds and now that Mitchell Melton too and that that makes a big difference in terms of your ability to hold up in terms of the opposing rushing attack and that kind of stuff he's Mitchell Melton has a very unique pass rushing skill set but he and we can get to that later but he is someone who has always been the linebacker turned defensive end who was always a little bit undersized as a defensive end well maybe not so undersized anymore Josh mickens came in with a little bit of physical development to do sounds like he has done that physical development now and now is maybe a little bit more ready to hold up and and be able to take on a bigger role than he had last year well and mickens on the roster listed at 23 three and I don't think that's probably true so he didn't come in at 200 pounds no and then at his 30 so that's a very good sign I think for for him and for them frankly but when when Larry Johnson said you know they'd like 35 snaps out of Kade McDonald if they could get him Depth and Player Development to that point I asked him does that mean you're trying to get basically a 5050 breakdown of first and second team like because we're talking 70 snaps in a game in a game that is against like opponent basically a matchup game is day would say where you're going to be playing the topof the line of your depth chart and he said no more like what what like 65 35 or 60 40 percentage not snaps but so you know 25 snaps maybe 30 snaps in a in a full game and I think that that would be fantastic for Ty Williams who played upwards of you know 55 snaps quite a bit last year I wonder what he could be at 40 snaps you know just fresh the entire time if they can do that for him well that's going to make a huge difference not only in game to game but also week to week because that's this stress you're going to be under not necessarily the first month of the season the September you can kind of ease yourself in they they can play him 30 snaps of games whether they need him to play 30 snaps a game or not they can play him 30 snaps a game until in through September the question is more okay the first real test of the Season whether that's Iowa or even the following week at Oregon then what are you going to be able to do because he's someone who you have seen him in short burst short burst going back to his true freshman season he's been outstanding it's been the consistency and the conditioning and it seems like both of those things have made significant strides over the last year two years to get to the point where he is a really significant contributor for this team but boy if you if he doesn't have to push himself to the absolute limit you saw last year the strain that having defensive linemen who had to play every snap you know the defensive ends last year at Notre Dame JT Tu moo Jack played every snap of that game it's not g be they don't have to do that this year and and if you can go from you have to play 100% of snaps to you know he was talking about Larry jnes was talking about 60% of snaps boy think about what a difference that makes Not only in your ability during that game but just add it up over the course of 15 16 17 games and if you're never giving the opposing offensive line a break because you have a fresh guy coming in and just maintaining maintaining that level then by the fourth quarter you're all the better for it that's that's a lot of the focus of Camp right now is just finding that depth and it was it was one of the concerns coming in and I I think you go through camp and you tend to feel better because you're recruiting at Ohio State so they you know the talent is here and so you start to see that come through and I think they feel better about where they are now they've always felt good about Kaden McDonald and that's that's not uh changing anytime soon and we're going to see him Senior Leadership and Experience out there a lot but having we don't talk about the the starters enough and we talked about uh yesterday on Buckey tomorrow morning about you know Caleb DS should be talked about more but it's just he's a known commodity you've got Ty Le Williams and Ty Hamilton on the interior and Jack Sawyer and JT Tuyo outside like that's to have four seniors and a fifth year senior in Tai Hamilton like this is a very very rare thing and as Larry Johnson said it it helps him Coach up the younger guys because they all see how to do it and that increases their level of development even though they may not be playing playing as much and getting that development they're seeing how it's supposed to be done but just the luxury of having those four guys it's one of those things that yeah you just Bank it and you don't talk about it because everybody knows that it's it's uh a huge Advantage but we should talk about it yeah you don't want to take it for granted but it's hard to not take it for granted it feels like that's just sort of baked in at this point yeah they're going to have really strong performance across the starting defensive line because you've got four seniors there and four seniors who have made significant strides throughout their careers not you know this is not just guys who came in and were fine and have remained fine they Ohio state has said defensive lineman who just never made that next step this is a bunch of guys who've really taken that next step so not only to have them there and have that as a benefit but also there's plenty of extra coaches on the field this year in terms of all the extra assistants who can coach now with the new NCAA rule you've also probably got a lot of players who are coaches on the field in a way you also another benefit to it is a lot of those guys are not necessarily at least through the the early to middle parts of Camp not taking as many reps as other guys are because you're in that point where you've been in this defense you've been working with Larry Johnson for four years now you've been in theate the Jim nolles defense for three years now you kind of know what you're doing at this point this that allows the younger guys even more snaps the access to the older guys and their knowledge the ability to learn from them to watch the film and break down film I mean all that stuff is gonna pay huge dividends down the line for the younger guys too talking about those four seniors we saw them in June at camps coaching up they were doing coaching of 2026 2027 guys helping them go through drills standing around with Larry Johnson so they this is coaching is nothing new to them you know it's it's just such a luxury to not have just veterans but productive veterans third year in this defense like there's there's nothing really like anything that comes up they will have seen or they're prepared enough to handle it to adjust to it on the fly or you know the next snap or the next series like it's it's very just boom boom boom okay now we've adjusted this is what I want you to do boom I can do that I already knew that you didn't even have to tell me we were going to do that anyway like that's luxury that it will get passed down but I gosh when was the last time they had something like this in terms of seniors they've always had like a collection of underclassmen and and every you know like 2016 is a fantastic defensive end group but you had a a freshman Nick Bosa and and um you know and seniors and juniors along the line there so it's not just a group of seniors I just you're not going to see this like any other pos position maybe other than like offensive line because that's a such a developmental position but imagine what Tom when was the last time they had four starting defensive linemen who were seniors because and maybe 2020 or something like I don't know oh well I know the answer can't possibly be 1990 six when it was Vel and thus and fickle and Winfield Garnett Garnett maybe I don't remember who the fourth defensive lineman was but you know that was more of the norm back then because the three and out model was not quite as mainstream as as it certainly is now to have guys who not only have been outstanding for three years and didn't turn pro but also have guys who didn't transfer when they didn't get on the field immediately or when they didn't get as much playing time as they wanted to immediately all of that is not the norm right now and this is one of these I think this is one of these luxuries that you probably shouldn't get too accustomed to because this is probably not going to be the norm moving forward this is going to be a pretty unique situation that Ohio state has the opportunity to take advantage yeah for sure hypothetical Jack JT Ty Le and Denzel left with the draft how much different would expectations be for the defense and the team overall so yeah if Jack Sawyer JT T moow Denzel Burke and Ty Williams had all left for the draft how different were the expectations for the defense but Tony I think the easy answer for that is this is Ohio State this is a Columbus Ohio the expectations would remain exactly the same they just wouldn't be quite as realistic well I I mean you're you're talking about replacing the defensive ends with Juniors so that that alone is an advantage um it's gonna be really hard to replace Ty Williams what he does he led the team and tackles for loss him and Jack last year but we we expected Denzel Burke to go and knew that Germaine Matthews would be the guy and they be okay like so like they're they've recruited well enough to um still be a favorite in a big 10 you're I mean next year is going to be very very interesting but they're still going to be a favorite in the Big 10 no matter how many people they're losing and I I think they would still be there would still be National Title hopes for sure like like I said and realistic like I think yeah yeah yeah well and this is I'm I'm joking that this is the expectation every year realistic or not it's more realistic this year than it is in some others but in the 12 team playoff era you assume they're getting in every year and then it's just a matter of are they the team get that gets hot we we did the morning show talking about you know is this the most talented Ohio State team ever going you know how far do you have to go back to find a team that's as talented and a lot of the teams that are in that conversation the 2015 team the 2013 team the 1998 team those are all teams that would have tremendously benefited from a 12 team college football playoff work you have the one stupid game the one slip up and it doesn't necessarily kill your season so if you have the level of talent that Ohio state has just on a year-to-year basis I've said this before I don't think there is a program in the nation that would have benefited more from the 12 team playoff if it had started in 2014 than Ohio State because there a bunch there a bunch of years you get in in 2014 maybe you win it maybe you don't but you were certainly they were certainly playing the best football in the nation by the end of the year so maybe they win that 2015 boy that looked like a different team after the Michigan State loss 1998 boy would they have would they have done that I I would have liked I would have taken Ohio State chances in 1998 2019 think about what it took for them to lose to Clemson in that year Clemson could have had a slip up against someone else you get another crack at Clemson LSU could have had a slip up against someone I mean you've got there's there is when you have the level of talent that Ohio state has just year to year you're always in the top five sixish in the nation in terms of most likely to win the national champion Championship so if you're in that mix every year that is only going to be beneficial to you and I I would say if Den zberg was not here and your starting Corners are Germaine Matthews and igb you're still talking about is that the best cornerback Duo and in the Big 10 yeah well and and maybe it's Jordan Hancock and igb Matthew is playing in the possibility as well so only kind I make Tony only kind I make I'm just GNA let the uh Machinery go past and we'll continue okay um anything else from the the defensive line because again it's it was just one position group today and it's such a known quantity and the questions we had got answered but it's still a wait and see on really where that depth is going to be I did ask Ken Curry like what's a good number of snaps for you per games like whatever you know as as long as I'm making an impact and I'll do whatever it takes and I I think if we're talking in a in a um like an akan 25 25 snaps for a starter 25 snaps for a backup and 25 snaps for the Backup backup you know like if aan gets 75 snaps on offense well you're very that's great Point Yes again dang it it but it does feel like if if the if the akan offense is on the field for 25 snaps in the first half it's probably 20 for the starters and you're starting to mix in those backups already and then you're starting to mix in the third teamers and and all that later in the I think the acon game might not be the best example but like the Marshall game for example then you probably are in the 2521 kind of range I mean we'll see what the what the snap totals look like this year with the clock rules and all that the huddling the huddling and the we might see like 55 snap games and I mean the huddling you have the two-minute warning is going to change things we talked uh yesterday to Cody Simon and he talked about the fact that offenses may wait and run the play clock down past the 15sec mark so that then the defensive coordinator can't be in the Green Dot guy's helmet talking to him about what he sees out when they break the Huddle so that might slow the pace of Play Down there's just there's a lot of things that are changing this year and so we'll we'll see what those numbers actually look like but I think generally people probably understand the the general percentages we're talking about Kevin Super Chat Super Chat Mike farino if all the a mentioned players leave would that have changed the quarterback battle I.E increase the chances of Julian S starting early looking to the Future no um would with those guys leaving would that have change the quarterback battle would they have turned to Julian S to start the looking towards the future no they don't ever look towards the future on the field they're only looking towards the the Pres and there are too many as they say there too many seniors on the team that would you don't do that I mean they they went to the Gator Bowl for the seniors years ago um and sacrificed the junior basically but yeah you're never going to look forward in that way until you are four and four in a season against Iowa in 2004 or whatever that was you know three three or whatever yeah yeah that they still if like even if you remove those guys from the team this is still a national championship Contender this is still a big 10 Championship Contender especially in the 12 team playoff era you gotta remember you can lose a game or two and still make the playoffs and once you're in the playoffs anyone can win in so this is a team that is not going to you know first of all will Howard was in before any of those decisions were made and so will Howard if Will Howard's the best quarterback on the team this is not this is not UMass where you have to look two years into the future and even if you do with the transfer portal you can't necessarily make those long-term plans and just have these guys written in in ink for multiple years there are plenty of Mac teams that have had young guys start at quarterback and then they turns out they're good and then they leave and they're you get a bunch of money and that's just sort of the reality you got to it is it is a live for the moment kind of sport in a way that it has never has always kind of been but never more than now I will say like it would be it would be a consideration if you're looking towards the future as of November December January sure yeah that's that's that's a different kind of looking towards the future where like you said you could conceivably lose three games you could lose more as long as you win a big 10 you know you're gonna get in so like there can be some Growing Pains but it's still going to be whoever wins that quarterback battle it's not going to be like well you know what will is better but Julian will be better in December let's go with that it's like they're not going to go that way Kevin Super Chat from Nicholas any talk of structural changes to the defense mainly different looks to get CJ on the field for pass rushing situations yeah and he talked Defensive Strategies and Adjustments about structural differences and changes to the defense to get uh CJ Hicks on the field and pass R situations Jim NS talked about this a couple of weeks ago where they are and we've seen CJ on the edge a couple times in practice a couple of weeks ago and it's more about doing more with the will linebacker and getting them in position because they are a unique type of athlete getting them to do more because they can do more create more Havoc they want to create more chaos because they have more safety nets around the field so that if something goes wonky they're they're a little bit protected but there there are those things that they are working on doing um I don't know how effective they've been but there's also the three linebacker look where CJ or sunny hex is going to be the Sam and they can do some different things with that with that so they are I mean you keep they've talked for years now about CJ hick does this very very well and so if you don't do something with that then what's the point right and they're going to mix up the looks and you're gonna see a bunch of different offenses a bunch of different styles of attacks which sometimes are going to be three linebackers it's possible we see a 416 type of Defense at some point you may see a Mitchell Melton Larry Johnson talked about him playing the six technique which is lined up over the tight end so either as a fifth defensive lineman or wider splits whatever it is they're you're GNA see a bunch of different stuff because they've got to show a bunch of different looks you can't be too predictable this is a team that can out Talent yeah probably at least I mean just purely out Talent at least n six teams in a big 10 at least nine teams on its regular season schedule and then quite possibly the first team they play in the college football play playoff as well you might just be able to purely out Talent them but at some point they might play Oregon once twice three times this year you're not necessarily just going to be able to out Talent Oregon so you're gonna and you know Georgia is still waiting at the end of the uh at the end of the Rainbo in Atlanta potentially in on January 20th so yeah you're gonna have to mix things up you're gonna have to try and confuse people and different looks is they had they've had plenty of time to you're not learning the defense anymore this is the third year the gym defense so this is when you can kind of get in your bag a little bit because you're not having to teach the basics you can you can get a little more creative and and you have guys that you can get creative with creative athletes he talked about Mitchell Melton's pass rush technique being calls it basketball and grass Larry Johnson says he's got he got kind of the crossover thing and the misdirection he can do some of that stuff we've seen you know the spin moves that everybody has but I I know the answer is going to be that you can't worry about it but there will be situations where you are playing a team for the second time so you cannot go with the same thing you you've done now the the main focus isn't going to be well let's hold something back against Oregon because we might want to use it the next time we play them you don't worry about that but when you have when you are getting ready to play them a second time now you're like what did we show what can we show off of that that is not like that that they might be prepared for but the the thing is like we know you know that we know that you know and so like that kind of um game is going to be interesting I know we've seen it before Ohio state has played Wisconsin twice in the same season but Wisconsin isn't Oregon Wisconsin isn't Michigan in my opinion in your in your opinion yes in terms of latitude not dissimilar in terms of style of play potentially very dissimilar the 402 and a half parallel if you say so it is this is the time of year when we hear the phrase iron sharpens iron a lot I just want you to prepare yourself for cat and mouse game that is going be a phrase you're going to hear a lot because there's going to be as you said I did this here's your counter punch now here's my counter punch your counter punch here's your counter punch to my counter punch your counter punch there's going to be a lot of back and forth there's going to be a lot of okay I know that you are probably going to do this because I did this the last time so what I have to do is I have to have an answer for what I think you're going to do the next time and then we play a team potentially a third time then it's a whole separate conversation I asked Ryan day about that at Big 10 Med days and I asked about it in terms of the prep in terms of studying the film and he said it's actually less prep in terms of you've already seen them you know what they have what we didn't talk about was this in terms of the okay I know that you know that I know that you know that and and figuring out this is where you're going to get into all the you know the coaching staff the analysts all those kind of guys they have to just sort of sit in a room and just rub their temples and think about okay what do we do when they do this well and I've got two questions for you relating to the cat and mouse game who is the cat who is the mouse and if you asked Ty Williams like who is Tom who is Jerry would he understand that reference the second part probably not first part see really better than cat and mouse game would be spy versus spy but if the kids today don't know ACDC there's no chance they know spy versus spy see the the white spy has to be the one that's your team whichever team that is you're the white spy the other team is the black spy but boy I I don't I don't think that don't you always want to be Jerry although you are the hunted then I mean but it typically worked out better for him yes so didn't you ever want that person I personally related more to the other one for obvious reasons scratch that's true better than Itchy and Scratchy yes I don't know would understand that reference either Dynamite drop in Monte Kevin any questions that you got there I think we we do we do uh first one here Listener Questions and Final Thoughts uh from Greg did Larry give any reason to believe kinata Jackson could be an elite defensive end did Larry Johnson give any indication to believe that uh kinata Jackson can be an elite defensive end like we've always heard very good things about kinata Jackson but Larry Johnson always talks very highly of kinata Jackson so I expect him he's gonna he said he considers both Kaden Curry and kinata Jackson ones there are no ones and twos they're all ones but these are all things he said before but he's not always lying because in 2016 2017 they had four number ones and I they those two would be starting here if Jack and JT had gone so like I think it's to totally acceptable to consider them starters and if you're starting a defensive end at Ohio State you're going to be productive but again I I still want to see we have seen you see some ridiculous plays out of him in practice and you know sometimes in games when it all comes together I think it's going to be very very good but I still want to see it you still want to see we've heard about it this month we've seen it to a certain degree this month but hearing about it in scrimmage and seeing it on the practice field you want to see that translate to the actual game field I do think he's someone who what's a realistic over under for a a sack total for kinata Jackson this year four and a half I was gonna say five five and a half but I think we're in that in that range and go back a couple years four and a half led the team Jack soer led the team with four and a half sacks in 2022 I believe so that's a that's a pretty good number and I'm sure everyone's going well Chase young had settle down settle down no Youngs no boses no Youngs no boses but if you have four and a half this year then maybe you are the guy who has nine or 10 next year and you might see more than that I'm going to be interested to see how many snaps does he play in the you know before before the point at which jt2 mowo and Jack Sawyer are unbuckling their shoulder pads against akan how many snaps does he and Kaden Curry play before that point because that might be telling in terms of really how much their ones as opposed to one a or two same thing with the Oregon game that'll tell us all you need to know whether he gets a single Sack or not if he's playing 30 snaps then he he's he's he's got all of the belief in the world Kevin mikino Jerry hunted Tom like 50% of the time well Jerry hunted Tom about well I mean what's good for the goose is good for the gander now Tom between Oregan in Ohio State who would be the goose and who would be the gander well the duck it's not a Drake it's not a drake but it's just a duck it feels I feel like he's described as a male puddles is not actually his name think they get mad if you call him puddles but he is generally gendered as a he which would therefore make him a gander okay so you're calling uh Buckey are geese in this scenario I'm not sure way traffic I mean you see them all over Columbus they are everywhere yes and they may have a Canadian punter so they true and tight end yeah well not this year I'm thinking yeah a little down the line yeah Kevin any more questions yeah Christopher has anyone heard anything about Josh mckin has anyone heard anything about Josh mickens good question good timing because we talked about him a little bit ago Tom yeah Josh mckin is someone who Larry J talked about the fact that he is they have they feel like they've got five defensive ends and you can probably fill in the top four because we just were talking about him fifth being Mitchell Melton and then the sixth he was asked about edri Houston is edri Houston potentially six gu say well maybe but Josh vickens has really taken a major step Maj taking a significant lead forward this year put on about 20 30 pounds which that was just sort of a part of the you've got to get up to be big 10 defensive end size because you got to be able to not just rush the passer but you also got to be able to stand up in the run and when you're a defensive end you're going up against tackles a lot of times those tackles are going to be 6'6 320 pound kind of guy so if you're 230 lbs then is not necessarily going to be a winning match up for you the Run game so mickens put on some weight sounds like he has taken some real significant steps forward over the last couple months so just just in the last hour and a half my mental expectation for how much we'll see Josh mickens has has ticked up quite a bit well he's gone from an athlete to a defensive end that's part of the progression and it's good to hear because we have not I mean it's it's a legit question because we have not heard much from him and uh so it was good to it's always good to hear like somebody out of the blue and Larry Johnson did say he's come out of nowhere so you're not the only one wondering I think l Johnson was probably wondering as well Kevin Lisa Sims how well do you think KY McCord will do at Syracuse this year how well stting how well will KY McCord do at Syracuse is he starting he is starting I think he's gonna do pretty good but again what kind of talent does he have around him and that's you know he could have the same kind of um reads and make all the same correct decisions and you may end up completing 56% of your passes because your guys aren't getting open and uh the the defenses they're playing are better than the offenses they have so I think he's going to be fine um you he's he's an experienced guy and when you're an experienced guy going to a lower level program I think you have such confidence and he's gonna go in there with a ton of confidence but again it's who's he throwing to he's he doesn't have Marvin who's he right Marvin Harrison Marvin mvin Harrison did play football at Syracuse but it has been about 30 or so years and it was not the one that the Ohio State fans are quite as familiar with frankly if Marvin Harrison Senor was there right now he might be starting he might be starting a couple pieces of that one just running through the Syracuse schedule they open with the Ohio Bobcats then they have Georgia Tech week off then Stanford then Holy Cross at UNLV at North Carolina State at pit Virginia Tech at home at Boston College at Cal Yukon at home they finished the regular season with Miami at home so it is not exactly a murderer's row there the other pie of this that we have not talked about yet other than just the talent there is this is the first year for a new coaching staff and they Dino babers uh no longer no longer the head coach there brought in Fran Brown who is a defensive backs coach at Georgia so a defensive head coach defensive head coaches generally are going to be let's run the ball let's protect the let's protect the defense that's just sort of the mentality of most defensive head coaches you're going to have a new system a new firste quarterback a first year system with the Personnel turnover that sort of a companies a coaching change all of that is probably it's going to be a little bit of a you know through no fault of Ky McCords it's probably going to be a little bit of a process for them but it's a manageable schedule I would guess they're a bowl team probably this year and if they get to a Bowl this year that's probably a good indication that Kord is done a lot for that team one of my predictions in the my 50 for 5050 back last month was that Kore and Syracuse will knock Miami have an opportunity to knock them out of the playoffs that last game that's that'll be one to watch it'll be interesting Miami might come in there with ton of confidence and just don't ever go to Syracuse with confidence ask dbo that's one where is that a retractable roof can they make the Carrier Dome or whatever they call the Carrier Dome a retractable roof between now and can't you just like split it with a pocket knife it feels you could that's that's the kind of thing you can do once probably a little expensive won have money for nil next year but duct tape duct tape there you go the Carrier Dome an air conditioning company and it's not air conditioned carrier I believe out number one they changed the name but I believe it is also an outdated facto I believe that it is air conditioned now oh look at you believe that it is but I believe it's just ice blocks and a fan yes yes two pieces of news a couple of black stripes lost the Roy Roker and mil Graham okay milin Graham and Leroy Roker both losing their black stripes one on each of the ball milin Graham not really a surprise he's someone who came in five star pedigree you've seen enough for him lero Roker that's good for him that's that's someone who did not have the five-star recruiting pedigree but to come in there's not a real clear path to the playing field there and we just talked safeties with uh Matt grer last night I don't know that I heard his name come up so that's that's there was and and a lot of that is a function of the questioning you get you get asked about Caleb D you get asked Ransom you get asked about jayen mlan you get asked about Jaden bonsu good you know good for him that's that's that's an impressive thing and I wonder if he's a special teams guy this year could be and and I'm guessing he was later on down the draft board but Marin Graham not really a surprise gred out of champion in the in the first scrimmage has continued to pick it up and I lik what Ryan Day said about him uh a week or two ago is that he he hit a wall and he had to create his own momentum he had to build his own momentum and fight through that's what the Freshman have to do like Tom your smug look tells me that you have leeo Roker and you might also have milin Graham sure might if the smugness is any indication and it usually is um this is a good this is a good proxy for where we sort of when you expected guys to lose their stripes my own went eighth overall which for a guy who's coming in the summer he was the first of the guys who came in the summer uh for us to have on the list lero rer also came in the summer 21st overall so that's in a freshman class that was only about 20 three or four that's that's pretty good for someone who came in rather unheralded came in in the summer to lose his black track before the season that's that's a you know remember this name and I assume the other The Last picks were offensive linemen and that's what he was probably thrown in there with so uh yeah that's that's a nice job by him so you got two more guys two more freshmen officially part of the team Kevin anything else okay um go ahead and hit the like uh before we get out here hit the thumbs up we would appreciate that Tom we we did not get a chance to have a Prem meeting about when we are going to do a Friday live show for bold predictions we don't have to do it right now in front of the people this not very professional but we're going to be doing a bold prediction show Friday live for the season bold predictions on the season um it was requested by special request and you know we have to do what we're asked um gota remember kids back in school now Tony so it is probably going to be a late morning early afternoon Affair before not spanning early morning late morning early afternoon one or the other one one or the other go ahead go ahead and block out say 11 to one you're probably not going to need the whole time but listen you don't want to take that chance yeah you definitely don't uh if you work from home just out of office note on the on the all email there and um be ready for that and bring your own bold predictions we will entertain those as well uh gonna certainly be more bold than Tom so that will do it for us want to thank you for joining us of course find us at Bucky huddle.com join up if you have not now is a fantastic time to do so because I don't know if you know this the season is here so uh we will see you there and of course youtube.com subscribe to the channel That way you get notified when we go live so thank you all for tuning in and we'll talk to you guys later
