Carry The G Radio: Packers camp battles heating up

what's going on Packers fans Aaron nler here joined by Bill Schmid 97.3 The Game the Packers radio network I'm from Gad TV and I'm sorry that you got to listen to both of us in the same room this week how crazy is this this is amazing dude in the flesh this is going this is the greatest place to do any kind of broadcast this is the greatest view that anybody could have this vantage point is second to absolutely none so I'm fired up to be in here it's pretty great right it doesn't suck it does not suck you know what else doesn't suck Green Bay Packers training camp being here and the Packers don't seem to either soaking up the vibe being able to see the practice and all the players and the kids and the bikes and the families and the stands it's I tell you what I love this time of year I can't you can't beat this there's nothing there's nothing like it and and walking over here was the greatest flashback that I've had to a camp like an old school football camp like when I'd be in college because you'd walk in between your buddy houses a block and a half two blocks right mostly like in between practice and meeting to try to find who had the best air condition in or who had gotten the best TV over break you had friends with air conditioning oh yeah yeah 100% and our house was one of the ones that did have air conditioning Junior and Senior year so you can only imagine uh we're rolling deep in that place kind of like we were on the perch earlier on here today because we have so many folks and everybody decided that they just wanted to come and listen to a radio show today out listen to 9 noon on the game as it were or get some shade either one of the well one of the one of the two speak of shade you got some shades that's what I'm talking about I was giv you guys last week about not having a tent the tent arrived today at Ray nki field yeah like in the middle of the first hour after the first tent uh was it had to get scratched it had to get scratched pre season for everybody 10 foot by 10 foot 10 on an8 foot area not exactly traditionally not what you're looking for yeah it doesn't exactly play very well however look like it is you got to overcome some adversity early to be able to get yourself to the best spot of the Season later adapt adapt and overcome roll with it baby come on now that's we're about over there I love it well the Packers had practice I believe it's number seven eight eight that sounds right somewhere around there we'll figure it out later but they were on Ray nki field today any overarching views anything from today's proceedings that you kind of took away as a oh this team feels XYZ or oh that player did XYZ like what was there some thing that stuck with you well the number one thing since uh not being here on Saturday and Sunday so not being able to be here when Jordan's uh in command yes sir that Rhythm and timing was was different right so I think that was the number one takeaway from today and that's exactly what you wanted it to be was all right back to neutral right and now you can start building yourself up to where you want to be come sa Paulo in September so there's plenty of time for all that there's plenty of time to figure out who's going to end up taking over that Right Guard spot I think it's still in active competition with with Morgan and Ryan and seems like they also are trying to find who is going to be their their Swing Man up front to go to Center because I do it does appear that they want to keep Zack over on the right Tackle Spot he's kind of entrenched there the right arm is also an issue from snapping with the peck injury you don't want him snaap him back from a torn makes a whole lot of sense totally understand it so Elton Jenkins and Josh Meers did kind of switch off early in the proceedings today though when they did the competitive period at the end of Camp Josh was there at Center Elton was in his usual left guard spot but I'm glad you brought up the offensive line because I do want to start there because it all starts up front Champion championships are one you got you gotta win in the trenches it's interesting coming off Matt's comments the other day about Jordan Morgan and then that those were kind of echoed Again by steno uh yesterday regarding okay we're gonna run him at Right Guard that is going to be his spot because I know even this off season they did work him at tackle a bit and obviously you drafted him with a lot of tackle experience I get what they're doing I will say he had a tough outing today it was it was not yeah like look there were going to be some growing pains right but right now that Packers defensive front is feasting on everybody really I mean they're really making life difficult for a lot of these guys but I thought yeah Morgan had a bit of a not welcome to the NFL moment but a okay rookie yeah off and off coming up off and off day uh with three days in front of you uh into the into the heat yeah there was definitely uh maybe a tick back but it also just allows you to then see how he comes back tomorrow right like I mean I think that's a huge part of it for them to learn a lot more about him he's played so much football nags that he's gonna understand how to come back right now you want to see it at a different position when he's in an adverse position right he has not been coming back off a day like that playing ride guard so it's always been on the outside it's a different reason generally why you get beat there's there's different ways and tactics to it so you think about that stuff all night while you're learning your install thinking about it for tomorrow so that's going to be a that's a big part of trying to win one of these jobs is you do you are gonna have a bad day it's about how you end up coming back from it and how the other guy ends up maybe nudging you out and capitalizing on it and that's the question I don't necessarily know that capitalizing on the opportunity has exactly been some Sean Ryan's been able to take advantage of a couple like it right it doesn't feel like it Matt was asked about Ryan this morning and I I think it was Andy Herman that asked him but I expected maybe not a glowing review but yeah he's doing everything we asked of him and blah blah blah but he made a point of saying some good some not so some stuff he's really got to work on it's like I don't think he's been given opportunities to kind of praise Shan Ryan and he's never taken them no and the weird thing is like [ __ ] and I were talking about it on the show today where there was a it felt like a different attitude when he was in the ball game last year right like the physicality did kind of turn up a little jump off the screen so that was jumped off the field that makes you want to believe that that is replicable this year and that's just the attitude that it brings but the attitude only goes so far unless you know the execution is always going to be at a consistent spot right so standard is the standard Billy and they're not going to change that so I I just there it's clear that they expect or feel they need more from him yeah very clear right it's it's wide open still and uh on an offense that seemingly doesn't have a whole lot of openings for a starting job there's still a lot of questions as to where the depth falls through right now that's the only one that's a question because Rashid Walker has even though everybody up front has been getting kind of beat everybody's had their had their moments uh 63 continues to just show that he's gotten better seemingly over the off SE I totally agree it's interesting you mentioned the Ryan thing too the physicality and the way that really popped last season like you know it was noticeable right but what's interesting is for every Run play and there were a few sprinkled in today there's five or six pass sets right they run in five or six pass plays it's a Passing League you're going to be throwing the ball I think he does great work in the Run game I think he did last year year I think today they had a number of plays there was one in particular where they ran counteraction to Jacobs and he busted off a big run up the middle good work along the interior but then it gets to pass protection and all of a sudden some of that you know those what they're asking these defensive linemen to do is get up field quick create Havoc just explode through those gaps I think that's where it seems like he's struggling yeah and and that's where you know everybody has their strength and weaknesses in you know the the different techniques that they do really well what accentuates their their talents more I would have thought that being able to and and he did a lot in college obviously playing left tackle going deep into a set you would think that it wouldn't be as much of an issue just with the straight line speed into you however somebody's on you a lot quicker right pause much somebody's on top of you a lot quicker uh at the guard position than on the outside so that's definitely an adjustment that you know it sounds a lot easier to figure out when you're as physical as he is which he is really physical and and it does it it stands out John would talk about it like you could feel it a little bit on the sideline too like all right there's there's a different little maybe up in intensity a little more physicality so to be able to get that consistently and then stem the tide on the pass Pro because you're gonna have some kind of weakness you just can't let it be a glaring situation well and it can't be a consistent thing where the opponent can take advantage of it that's I would think one of the issues as far as especially in that right side Day last year they kept trying to give him the the job he just apparently just was never consistent enough in pass Pro for them to do so and just think about it naturally with a right-handed quarterback the first thing you're looking at is over the top of that right guard so if that is a spot in pass protection that is a cause for concern it's going to be instantly the first thing that the quarterback notices feels and the feel of it the feel of it can really really throw off yep oh man that's so true um but overall it's going to be kind of fascinating I think over the course of the next these next two practices and then family night I suspect then we'll get a maybe not a reset but we'll get a decent look at who they're expecting to run front line going into that first preseason game because you know Matt was asked about it today and he's always gonna punt on the who's GNA play what the preon question especially this early but I gotta think because you have not a jumble but you have a number of guys working in a lot of different spots at some point and I would suspect probably heading into preseason you're going to want to solidify that a little bit to start getting work together yeah you want to have at least some kind of idea as to who's going to be the grouping together right like you you got you got to feel somewhat confident enough in the decision to be able to make the decision right like as easy as that sounds you just you got to be able to then see them play together and then be like all right uh we are convicted enough this is the move this is where we're going group now let's start getting better together although I say that and if there's a team and a coaching staff that has shown over the course of the last four five years that they do not give a about it like they will throw guys in and out and move them all around at a drop of a hat within games you know within a week or whatever it's the Green Bay Packers in m and and there's a beauty in that for the guys in the locker room I can assume of understanding that whoever is the best guy at whatever position they've showcased y your job's always going to be available if indeed the guy behind you is popping enough in practice to be able ble to to push and it's not necessarily A all right that's his job and that's our role going forward no roles are continued to be earned all year long they definitely feel like they accentuated that last year you know what's a a role that is uh going to be earned at some point here probably in the preseason be the backup quarterback that's for sure yeah yeah yeah and one Sean Clifford your backup from last year bit of a rough start to Camp putting the ball in Jeopardy probably a little too much probably not a big fan of that if you're a coach but undoubtedly his best day of camp today Yeah couple couple touchdown throws one that first one to doose in the back of the end zone threaten the needle between two Defenders great job by doose get feet down fire for the back line and then he comes right Clifford comes right back and throws another touchdown to Bo Melton front corner of the right right side of the end zone there he is that's the guy we saw last summer that's the guy we saw slinging it in preseason and earning that backup spot well and that's the part of it NS you mentioned it like if you're a coach you probably don't like him taking as many risks yes being able to be smarter with the football that is the that is the objective b his life however isn't that kind of what Packer fans were loving was the Gunslinger mentality of it so afraid to let it rip the the Clifford truthers Walk Among Us they're out there no doubt and like for as many as as much as he was glorified for it last year it quickly has allowed to get killed this year so like you do have to you kind of got to take the good with the bad on some of those right like there is going to be some inherent risk when you're playing that way I thought the Melton one was even better the the deos catch was fantastic to be able to keep the feet in bounds concra was was such a bang bang like between the Defenders I was sure it was getting picked off I was like oh that's another pick but and that's that's one of those where on a certain different quarterbacks you'd look like all right surpris you kind of made that decision Clifford all right for sure that if you're going to be able to play we're going to have some confidence in you you got to rip that with confidence because that's the only way that that's the only time you're the same player you know the route you know how he's going to break off and like you confidently yep be confident the ground throw that with all your with all your Moxy so to speak I think it's not in people trying to contact me while we're doing carry the G radio what are we doing here this I didn't know if they were coming to no none of that but I look at the quarterback spot and it's like so interesting to see like you were talking about some of the especially fan driven stuff when it comes to Clifford always it's time to cut him and like that's dramatic outage they're literally working that's the whole point and we get to watch them work but there's so much context to it to the point where I asked leflour about the interception that Jordan love threw uh two days ago when kaln King picked him off they were playing cover two and I said to Matt it like was felt uncharacteristic Well turns out he's trying to hit Christian Watson on a choice route and the choice route would suggest they would have preferred Watson to sit down between the two Defenders awesome but he didn't do that he kept going Jordan expected him to but Jordan didn't use his hitch on the back leg whether you're a quarterback I want you to Hitch to make sure you know what he's doing all sorts of teachable moments but it just goes to kind of underline we've talked about it before in Carri the G I think most football heads know it and there's con there's so much context like when people see the quarterback stats for inters and you're like oh he's throwing all these it's like it's not always the quarterback's fault I understand there are certainly throws and plays where you can be like what the hell was he looking at yeah but there are always like you know a couple sides to each play well and and the funny thing is you mentioned just on the end result of the picks or the touchdowns being the end of it I just think about it with all the grades that you're seeing and like so that to me is the is the toughest part of what the were in those meetings where the grades count right for the practice to understand where they were grading where that's going to be a negative and I don't necessarily believe it happens unless it is in favor of the team that doesn't necessarily get brought up in contract negotiations players then believe it does because if it goes adversely against one it has against all but that's the thought like and that's the moment where it's come on you don't even actually know what we're being taught to do here what our point of emphasis is my negative is actually on a different part of the play that you wouldn't have assumed or wouldn't have put together right you wouldn't have known so that part is is awesome I got to assume that it was I don't want to get our boy Big B in trouble like if that was him with with the elite video with the video amazing footage and then Elite editing tying it together by Hero the stands and then Tyler edited it together with coach's breakdown yeah but in you for as many questions as you've asked coach have you noticed like were you get would you have gotten that answer two years ago bad in depth I don't think it's amazing he appreciates being able to talk football tot to narratives totally agree tell us talk a little bit about or something like that I think he appreciates ball you know and so when he gets a chance it's also a bit of filibustering you know like you get that question you're like oh I'm just going to throw football at him for like a good five minutes and that takes up five more minutes where I'm not having to ask about not being asked about oh who's injured is this injured guy coming back and all the stuff you don't easy thing to lay into yeah no well and that's where hey that's where his media training is coming in and it has been it's continued to get better and better dude when I was working with ly Butler he was quite upset about it he's like we need to get this guy some media trading because I like him he goes he is so he you can tell he is an amazing guy the players like him we need to get him some media training so he takes advantage of a situation like that like you just mentioned Y and keep you away from asking me about you know oladapo coming off the injury right what out there when's Tucker craft gonna heal up we're GNA talk Choice routs why why is your pectoral healed and his isn't like that question doesn't come up because of these are the Searing questions that the public needs to know that's a really I'm gonna lead with that tomorrow more importantly that's the dumbass questions that we ask over in the radio show so we let you guys ask the important ones inside we let you guys do our jobs right you guys do your jobs yeah exactly let's switch over to the defensive side of the ball because we talked a lot of offense those pretty boys who score points but man this defense is fun to watch like just being here and seeing it it's interesting you fallen in well not yet you know me not I've been burned too many times Billy I've been hurt before is this like a maybe on the quote tweet or are we still on the no possibly yeah maybe on the Yes No Maybe scale it's a maybe yeah all right all right there's just too much in the history of Green Bay Packers football so look you're out here defensive backs are breaking on the ball you're getting all these picks you're doing pass breakups the guys up front are rushing the quarterback they're making them kind of force themselves into poor decision I'm all about that life but a ain't ever been a play made in July that matters in the NFL no uh unless it means that somebody's at lost for the season um well that's what without saying but go on the field yep the the part of it that's interesting and and [ __ ] brought it up to us earlier today because we were kind of going in the same vein where everything's good right now this D line is there does seem to be and this will be maybe the one the way to get you to a yes as well from being spur too much with Packers defenses there've been a couple of long runs like each day there have been a few long runs those a good one today Jacob good by Jacobs today Emanuel Wilson looked like he had a good one too I don't know two goodes today but but my favorite Wilson run this Camp so far it was last practice there was a twos against the twos he hit a hole on the right side really nice hole he was so wide out in the open there was a safety coming down on him I couldn't see who it was but he actually High stepped that's awesome perfect and then like took off and got pushed out of bounds but it's like he hit him with a high step that's how wide open he was out in the field it was awesome yeah so I mean like that's that's the one part of it for me is that there're and and still and maybe it's going to be a few years before it actually happens I think you're already starting to see a little bit of the turn again towards the Run game like you do have to pass to set up a little bit of the Run game the emphasis on controlling the ball and keeping the ball away from these really really good quarterbacks maybe that changes with the field position right but the new kickoff rules leading to more and more scoring there right so like some of it's going to be uh wait and see this year and next but I don't know man you you got to be able to run stop the run if you're going to be able to win in January and and just the way that the season has ended the last number of years it's felt like it's been consistently five yards a pop not being able to get off the field runs that have kept you out of the games that you've wanted thir four and the opponent knows run the ball for a first down yep that's the problem that's a hard way to live it's a very hard way to live I think it's interesting you bring up the kind of cyclical nature right and the idea that the league might be leaning towards the run a bit more and I think that might end up being true because I mean again last year scoring down you know the idea of all this too high that the league is playing on defense keeping it all in front of him just trying to make the opponent earn it down the field I will say the end of last year last six last six games really for the Packers the way leflour leaned into the run now it helps that Aaron Jones was playing out of his mind yep I think Jacobs can do a lot of what Aaron was doing at the end of last season no disrespect to Aaron Jones love the man but that's the balance I think you're going to need to find on offense because you have to be able to get into the third and fours the third and threes rather than living in the second and twelves and or second even second and tens that you find yourself in a lot of the time when you're trying to throw him first they're playing a shell nothing's there you throw it away now it's second and 10 yeah and the funny thing when you talk about Jones and Jacobs I I think like what you what immediately jumps off the page about the other player the other one actually does underratedly well yeah that's such a good point like Jacobs actually has good Breakaway speed I think that was the number one thing when you think about Aaron Jones on the outside how many times have you seen him busted up the sideline and get either caught or someone has the angle and it's able to Pure him out of bounds and for Jacobs you instantly are like he's a big power back dude No One's Gonna Be able to get him down Aaron Jones was one of the more elusive in the whole running backs that I've been able to see amazing job of keeping his balance but also being able to find the crease right yeah so I think I think they're close they're they're obviously different players but I think they're kind of closer to each other than we've maybe pointed out anyway that that part of it is so impactful for how they play this team plays yes and for how you just are gonna have to be able to control and try to keep offenses off the field with your offense like and that is that's one of the biggest parts of Defense these guys are paid when you talk about wide receivers right now in football the wide receiver quarterback combination that can be upwards of an $85 million battery amazing I mean so like the the thought the the best way to keep those points down on the other side is to keep your offense on the field and a lot of that still comes down to controlling the game in the line of scrimmage and they have the group that does that so it's going to be interesting to see how much they play into it as well I think they have to as far as like the defense being able to uh hopefully stop the run and get out the quarterback and everything that you require of them I thought sto's response yesterday was telling when he he was asked what is the biggest difference you've noticed you know going against the old scheme for the last three years and now you're going against hle scheme the first thing he said was more defensive backs in the box and like I'm telling you I have I've Loved all the youth on the defensive side of the ball I'm fascinated to see how this safety competition plays out but I am I am smitten with Evan Williams I think he is a player I don't know if he ends up starting I don't know what his role will end up being they got a player there I have zero doubt about that yeah and and we were talking about it earlier today I don't know if it means that he can end up pushing like for a nickel spot like the backup nickel anded because him and Bullard like it's no disrespect to Bullard but Evan Williams is just a fun guy when he's been on the field right so like that's the part of and it's going to happen right here soon soon enough we're going to start getting the questions of how do you keep him off the field and then the quick deflect I'm almost there already right and like the quick deflect of oh well it all works itself out it all works itself out sure but you talk about getting your best 11 out there at some point kids continuing to show that he's going to be one of those guys those guys uh coming in from Power fives in the secondary also seem to be getting better and better and more Pro ready because of how much they're practicing playing all year long I mean it he pops off the field every single kind of instincts are just really really really good really impressive I will say also shout out kayin king that interception he had it wasn't just happen stance like he was in a good spot and I love that he's been running when they're working on the individual stuff he's been running with Kean Nixon working on slot technique yep and I wouldn't have thought that they would play him inside initially but that's certainly apparently how they're going at least you know this first blush on the field and he seems to have responded really well that and also nags I mean you've been around this you've talked to these guys so many times and it was a point of emphasis every time you talk about kin King was his attitude after the draft of it's an availability kind of thing too right like they're not GNA get rid of me the more I can do and if I prove that I can go in here then they definitely can't get rid of me I mean that's the thing it wasn't I know we've talked the public has talked a lot about that interception but he made a bunch of plays that day that was the highlight but he had a number of pass one you had video of huh yeah exactly he almost had another interception that just happened pop through his hands but I mean you talk about an active guy and a guy who you know there's reasons he dropped and I know he's like myff about it but man if they could get even a semblance of the guy that was playing there two years ago that kind of version of a player man they they may have gotten a steal there yeah then that's a pair of seventh round corners that could play uh because carington Valentine can play he can certainly play the other one is is an interesting Wrinkle in all of it is how well Eric Stokes if he can continue his far so good with Stokes right so far so good man and I got to admit I've been a little surprised yeah I don't think you're the only one given opportunities last year I was not expecting a whole lot and he has really played well so yeah and I don't think you're the only one that kind of laughed when it was brought up like hey man Stokes is right there and they okay come on now but well I mean it's not like he's been able to stay on the field no and that's that's what I'm saying right he hasn't been able to stay on the field however for talking about in the kicking game being a sixth round pick he's a first round pick so you know gy is feeling himself a little bit right now the way people have been talking about his draft he should be how much better would he be flexing chess coming up a little Vince McMahon style if all of a sudden he's signing a second contract to a first round pick that everybody thought was left or dead and he's sitting up like The Undertaker and he's going to start up next across from jier Alexander that's a also balling in this Camp my God I love watching Jer out there it is so great and if you noticed I mean you're you're out there again I'm not going to not judging anybody but it does seem like you're generally the first of the media guys out there try to be you also ditched our guys earlier today Elite we got a little play byplay of it which guys the 973 guys they were like tailing around you like when the cool quarterback is like hanging around all of the backup linemen going to the bar this is such a misrepresentation no but it was it was so awesome such misolation of the event you walk right past the the little like hallway area not hallway area the entrance way for the players to come from the down Hudson center onto the field right yeah nags walks through there's Drew KB and Tim Scott looking uh like maybe they might be out of place just a tick out of been there before once a year yeah once a year but the head of security just like halts them and Aaron just keeps booking it we had it it was right going to a break we had perfect play byplay of it it was a price moment oh my God because then you quickly ditched them and went and talked to the girls like it like it would happen like I said it it's I've seen it before do you executed it really well as a former quarterback yourself I am a former quarterback let me tell the appon West Terrors were never in worse hands of the position than when I Appleton West offensive linemen when they were walking into them parties I felt exact I saw exactly what they were feeling when NS would walk in and be like all right all right I'm going to strut my quarterback and theater stuff over here and nobody seeing this combination not what happened by the way real quickly before we wrap this up I did want to mention because you mentioned the kicking competition yeah which is in full Go I mean this is oh it is a true kick competition Carlson had his real first ugliness today like real so it was it was it was errant real ugly like wide right like wide right see I couldn't tell I couldn't tell I couldn't tell how far it was that's why I was like Ryan wood did something for the local paper about how he made this adjustment and things are so great and I was like this guarantees he's going to have a bad sure enough bad Miss today and a and a big strong leg on that 54 y by Greg Joseph Greg Joseph looks legit Greg Joseph's won games in the NFL with kicks I mean like I mean I'm not I'm not trying to he's he's played he's kicked in the league he won games remind me what's our wager I kind of forgot what it was it's I'll have to go back and look yeah it's something to do with uh some kind of carry the G something or maybe a meal cooked over on the track I don't remember exactly what it was it's something good it's something maybe one of the three people who actually listen to this will remind us it'll be good 300,000 people that listened to this n what are you talking about something like that something like that hey reminder if you're watching us on YouTube you can find this on all of your favorite podcast platforms including of course iHeart that's one you really the iHeart Radio App if you haven't downloaded it yet I don't know why it's your home for podcast doing this what are you up to anybody else do podcast Awards than the ihart radio app no not as good as the ihart radio app does this one's gonna win one so makes sense I mean other than the CH said TV app which is currently not even working so don't try and do that at the moment you dude you got me so well like hold on a second wait a second why have I not been on this I'm why was it not working what it's just we've been trying to upgrade update for a few days and all a sudden well you're not doing anything why don't you why don't you figure it out I know right I'm not sound like I'm busy hey if there's a time if there's a time for your football website and app to break it's right at the start of training camp I I've heard this is a foolproof method for like you know creating Buzz around your products it's getting your product out there you really want people vibing to what you're putting down break at the most important part of the Year oh my God it's like wait you know 11 years for a college football game and all sudden the servers are down right when it launches that makes sense how's that going by the way it's outstanding got a dynasty going yet uh so I have three kind of like my fantasy football teams I have multiple one is um with a bunch of guys that I don't know friend of a friend all SEC so that one's fun the one that I'm doing personally I've gone from Middle Tennessee State all right to Charlotte okay and now I just took over the uh Wisconsin Badgers head coach keep getting fired or are you moving up the ranks I'm moving up the ranks now listen it's not that we're using these places at Pit Stop nexts but you are that's exactly what you're doing we might be renting right we're renting we haven't we haven't bought a house yet no but now we might because now we're com now you're in Madison so so now we might be coming home there you go side Madison For the First Time come on now it's gonna happen so and luckily NS I am in our spot over there um I'm just in the basement there's like a 70 inch TV and I brought my PS5 wait really yeah oh I'm coming over yeah you have to that's it's an amazing spot everybody else
