Dodgers Capitalize on Cubs' Bad Base Running | Breakdown

[Applause] Runners take off throw to third oh no cubs come up short of a sweep in La would have been amazing but the base running lets them down we're going to break down the fifth inning and the ninth inning and what went wrong in these base running situations but in case you miss the exciting announcement we are having our first ever setup man sweep Stakes you can join me potentially at one of the final games at Wrigley Field this year register down below and you'll get a game with me and my family you're going to be able to get a obvious shirts experience and a Cubs memorabilia package that's all going to first place and then second through fifth place are going to get a obious shirts gift card make sure you register make sure you're subscribe to our YouTube channel now let's go ahead and get to the game action Daniel Hudson is on the mound for the Dodgers and Cody Bellinger just made this a one-run game with a three-run home run Cubs were down 7 to3 and Hudson walks the first batter that he sees ESO parades and then you've got Michael Bush with a really weird at bat the first called strike is way up high on what looked like a change up bush is kind of like really dude and then the next pitch very next pitch almost the same spot almost the same pitch and then bush is like wait was that on the check swing or was that another strike Manny Gonzalez the home playay umpire says no that's that's a strike dude and if you can see here on Game Day apparently it's not a strike now what I will say if you miss my video about a lot of players getting screwed on strikes Michael Bush is actually one of those guys that gets a lot of of called strikes that aren't potentially strikes however bush has this really crouched stance and so that was one of the things I looked into on this video if you have not watched it yet I put it in the description down below I also put it in the comments make sure you check it out after this one is done but then later in the bat Hudson paints with a slider down low and in and does not get the call he's frustrated he should be it's pitch number five there on your screen that is very obviously a strike but instead it makes it 32 Hudson says a nice word there and then very next pitch way inside Michael bus earns the walk and now you've got first and second with one out it's just a one-run game Nico Herer routine double play nope Chris Taylor boots it and here was almost the first potential base running blunder heak parus almost gets caught in the middle of trying to go home on that one and here's what I want to point out really quickly if you're not a former baseball player you're probably like dude that was a routine ground ball double play and it really was but what happened happened here is Chris Taylor completely ran himself into a bad hop you're taught to get that ball either on the way down or within about a foot of it being on the way up and as you can see as that ball comes on the way up it's still coming up up up and Taylor is just running himself into a really bad hop there he should have really right there that's where you want to catch the ball either uh about a millisecond after it bounces or a millisecond before it bounces right in that range is where you want to get that ball but just really made life difficult for him and instead of it being a double play to end the inning it's now Bases Loaded for the Cubs and peow Armstrong Rockets a single over to the right field Muki bets throws it in and this is your first base running blunder of the game man Pete Crow Armstrong is just caught up in the middle Michael Bush is now caught up in the middle a lot of chaos going on PCA ends up back at first Nik Horner at second there's a lot to talk about here so let's go ahead and just break this down frame by frame you can see this ball first of all you're taught as a runner to freeze on a line drive so as soon as that ball is hit everyone freezes for a second and then they're running so already Michael Bush over here at second base he is not even hardly off of the base off of his lead when that ball is already into the Outfield or nearly into the Outfield the ball is right there at the edge of the dirt and so he's got a late jump already so Willie really did the right thing here mooki bats has an incredible arm you stop him right there you've got Bases Loaded again with one out but the problem is that PCA right here has not looked over to see that Michael Bush has been given the stop sign he's assuming that he's already been given the go-ahead but it really doesn't matter what Michael Bush is doing it matters what niik Herer is doing so PCA his head is still over looking at mookie bets here so at this point he's wondering is Muki going to throw it home he's going to throw it behind me to try to get me as soon as he sees that throw go in front of him he's not looking at Nico he's looking at the ball and then he looks over and sees oh crap Nico is still on second base and at that point he's dead in the water because Freddy Freeman cuts it off and now you've got this moment where PCA has to make a decision is he just going to run into the out and keep it at second and third or is he going to try and get in a rund down and potentially let Michael bus score what does he do he basically kind of starts walking a little bit and he's like yeah I'm going to just kill some time to let Michael go now when I want to zoom in on here because a lot of people are giving Michael Bush crap about his decision to go home and yeah uh it really is not the right decision it it it really isn't but this could have been rectified with a number of different things so the first question is does Willie give Michael Bush the verbal to go home now Willie is pointed towards Michael Bush as we zoom in here it's really hard to see though is he is he yelling is he saying go go go really tough to see there you cannot make the distinction there so my assumption is Michael Bush did take this base or try to take this base on his own at that point as soon as Michael Bush is getting off the base Nico Herer should be coming over from second to Third Base it's kind of this figh ORF flight moment for both them when one goes all are supposed to go so Michael Bush is going here and Nico staying put they're both supposed to be going at that moment if they don't then that's when things get really kind of weird because now Michael Bush is like okay wait wait wait I'm in a rundown now Nico why are you still on second base if I'm in a rundown you're supposed to be in a run you're supposed to at least be trying to get to third base and now because Nico didn't go to third base well now it's first and second with two outs instead of second and third with two outs and so there's three people to look at during this entire thing and say y'all messed up it's not just a PCA thing it's not just a Michael Bush thing it's not just a Nico thing it's an all three thing Michael Bush yes he should have probably stayed at third base in the moment it's really difficult to make that decision so I don't really fault him that much but as he's going to home Nico should have been going to Third and then PCA could have stayed at second and for that reason you've got yourself a really bad result here and of course Christian Beth Court ends up striking out swinging to end the inning now we go to the ninth inning Cubs are down by three at this point and Michael copc cannot find the plate to save his life and on the first pitch to se Suzuki here take a look at this will SM starts to come out to see Michael copc but then as we look at the next screen here well he's not there he's actually going back behind home plate so what happened there well on the very next pitch he throws another ball and Will Smith you can see looks like he wants to come back out again he's looking to The Dugout and then he gets the go-ahead to go now what ended up being the situation that Ryan Dempster told us was that the Dodgers were out of their Mound visits this was the final Mound visit and that's why Mark PRI is just staying on the bench here because he can't come out coaches aren't allowed to come out because they've run out with all of their their usage so this is basically at this point the last ditch effort to just get Copic to kind of settle down and it does not work because he ends up walking SE Suzuki and on five pitches he walks Cody Bellinger so bases are loaded by the way coming into this game copc had only walked four batters as a Dodger he walks three in a row to start this ninth inning and it just gets even worse because now as you see he just said look at where the clock is at 2 1 and that is what we call a pitching clock violation so it's already ball one to ESO parades he does end up getting ESO parades on a sack fly so it's 10 to8 but this was just a weird situation here you've got your tying runner on first base and seya Suzuki and Cody Bellinger are off on a double steal and they are out at least seya is out now when you you look at the replay here this is where things went really really wrong because Michael copc is already leg completely lifted and seya not only has a small lead he hasn't even started going yet it's a really bad jump and as I look over at Cody Bellinger as well I don't know if this was called a double steal from Craig Council or if it was called by just a straight steal by seya I I haven't seen anything in the postgame conference or anything that says what it was so if you if you know please let me know in the comments but the reason I think this was called by seya is because Cody Bellinger is also not going and then look at this se's already off now Cody looks over and he sees oh seiya's going I got to go and that's when he starts going and at that point that's why I think seya probably made this call on his own I could be wrong it might have been Council and it might just be Cody waiting for seya to actually get going and seeing hey did seya get the sign okay you got it I'm going too now either way it's the ninth inning and if you're going to steal third you got to you got to get a bigger jump Cliff Floyd talked about it after the game he talked about how closers as well just really don't like throwing over in these kind of tight situations so you have to be getting a big enough jump to really give them the opportunity to throw over and he didn't do it and for that reason this ends up being the nail in the coffin for the Cubs Michael Bush strikes out and the Cubs lose 10 to8 what a crazy series though gosh that was fun stuff I got to go to the first two games but hey come to a game with me at Wrigley setup man sweep Stakes the registration is down below [Music]
