Detroit Lions Beat the LA Rams…But Should We be Concerned?

[Music] what's going on lions fans Welcome to The Pride of Detroit YouTube channel it is a victory Monday here in Detroit Morgan the Lions beat the Los Angeles Rams in week one of the NFL season 26-20 before we even get into some of the other questions I have as we kind of break down this game I gotta ask you as somebody that's a season ticket holder someone that was there in Ford Field just break down the the atmosphere for me oh it was you know just like everyone's been talking about like Dan Campbell like National media like Ford fields in the last like year or two three however you want to you know frame it has turned into one of the biggest and best like HomeField advantages in the the National Football League like Baran so yeah it was a long day like we started at Easter Market at like 2 I'm too old for that I'm so tired today my voice is a little jacked up too to be honest with you but yeah it was consistently like 120 DB on defense you know so really loud like it would flutter between you know 115 110 probably jump up to like 125 130 135 when like jamos scores or you get a sack or what have you so yeah really loud the crowd felt ready everyone felt really ready to go like there was thousands of people lined up uh for the doors that opened at 5:30 3 hours you know a little less than 3 hours before kickoff yeah I was one of them we wanted that jir Gibbs bobblehead gota gotta have it so but yeah it was H it was crazy in there man um I think it's just that's just the way Ford Field is going to be for from now on which is good yeah I think that's a and I think that's kind of like a consistent thing with this team right like as much as we want to have set expectations for the coach and the players and the ownership I think there now is like a set standard for what the fans should like are expected to bring on game days when you're at home or even on the road because we know like you know Lions fans travel and we're definitely across the country but like there's an expectation that like you bring energy to this team and and just like you expect them to show up on the field they're kind of expecting us to show up um with our passion and and just you know our willingness to impact the game um just from a noise standpoint so no okay I watched it from home it was a weird game for me Morgan because like as excited as I was to get to Sunday night to get to you know 8 o'clock once the like once the ball was kicked off like I was like there was this weird calm where it was just like I just wanted to see everything play out um and like you said I got hyped just like everybody else did when J Mo gets his touchdown I got super I literally jumped out of my seat when Levi got his sack because I was just like it's so good to see the thing things that you talk about in Camp and it actually starts to materialize on the football field so there's a lot of stuff that we're going to get into in this video we're not going to necessarily break down the game in a very traditional way we're hoping hoping that these types of videos can be unique and that we're going to try and take very focused looks at very specific things and then try to have a conversation about them um so with that said Morgan the first question I have for you when you look at this game and obviously with the Lions getting the win what in your opinion did the Lions do right to basically secure that win last night like what did it really take for them to pretty much punch their ticket at the end of of overtime it was just a weird recipe for a win right like you think about it like last year the lions were dominant in a lot of games and a lot of the time it was like largely on the shoulders of that offense just being a juggernaut right so it was cool to see tonight because the Rams are a good team first of all I want to get that out there like I know their fans have been pretty annoying lately sorry Rams Fans like not all y'all I'm not putting everybody in box here just some some YouTube creators you know who you are you know yeah man like the Rams are a good team especially when they get healthy I do like that's going to be an NFC playoff Contender like know Contender to go make a deep run because Stafford's back there and this isn't us being Stafford Fanboys man like just recognizing Elite quarterback play yeah they came in you know with a really specific game plan so I give I don't sea mcy seems like a whatever person but obviously a really really good football coach a brilliant offensive mind because I think it benefited him knowing that he was going to be down a couple offensive linemen potentially more when havenstein wasn't able to go at right tackle and he came prepared so everything was me and my buddy Wilson uh that we I sit next to like you know it was one two out one two out it was getting it out swea was like why can't we get a sack and she said next to me one of my best friends and I was like it's getting out too man too fast man like it's just boom boom and they were getting pressure people were winning one on ones obviously the Hutchinson stats jump out at you there was a lot of like they were getting hits on Stafford uh but he was making really Elite throws in the face of pressure um little like small Windows anticipatory throws so he was back in he was just picking up where he left off from that game in January when he almost pulled it out so uh yeah at the end of the day though it was fun to watch that because the offense really didn't have it it was clunky all night aside from Jameson doing crazy things and little plays here and there it felt really clunky but the defense was good and like I know you know we talked about the numbers when we got on yes Stafford threw for 3177 yards but it was on 34 completions that's you know six six and a half yards per attempt like they were just you know dinking and dunking it and I think that was very specific because again McVey knew he had to get the ball out quickly because that o line was going to be a Turn Style especially on the edges and we saw that all night Hutchinson was living in that back field Stafford made Stafford escaped a couple times one time from uh Marcus dport he got away from Hutchinson I was like okay old man like you he had a little bit of a little bit of maybe not Lamar Jackson but a little Patrick Mahomes where you're just like no he I didn't know he still had that in the bag no I was like okay he did it a couple times because I was like they had him rights like they I thought they probably should have had two or three more sacks at the at the low end yeah but Stafford made good plays but yeah I it was cool to just see the Lions make enough plays because they clearly didn't have their best aim and but you just they they figured it out man they were in it the whole time you you know we'll talk about the overtime drive but it was just there and they didn't have their best stuff but they still figured out a way to win the game and to me that's what really good teams do even against a good team the Rams the Rams are a good team it's not like it was some bad opponent that like they're like oh the Lions still won because they're no like the Rams like Dan Campell said the Rams gave them everything they you know possibly could and the Lions still figured out a way to win and that's a beautiful thing and I think that for me is like the the key to like why they were able to pull this game out right is that they have ascended to that level and and I got to give you credit because I think you said this first in slack as well like they have ascended to that level where they're a good enough team to overcome bad play or mediocre play and throughout this game while there were moments of like you said J Mo having splash splash plays uh Aiden or Levi or anzelone making plays here and there on the defensive side there was enough things going right but at the same time like as a fan you also knew this is not the standard of which they normally play Aman Ra was very quiet Sam leapa only had a couple catches here or there some timely ones but again not the same thing that we're we're typically expecting jir was a little quieter than what I think what we're used to seeing but again the talent on this team I think has ascended to such a level to where even their mediocre play is still good enough to beat you know average teams that are at least average in the sense that the Rams had a lot of injuries they were not at full strength so a team like this version of the Rams that mediocre play can can win you games you can kind of everyone has has been here before in Detroit as far as they've seen worse things so this whole idea of like no we're just going to ride the wave and and reaching back to hard I when when Dan Campbell talks about like pulling you to the deep and like they very much have that mentality as a roster of listen we're just going to weather the storm we're going to keep fighting and keep pushing and keep pushing and by the end of this whether it's regulation or overtime we will be the last one standing because we just have we're just made of the right stuff and I think that's what for me at least that's kind of the the the difference and what really helped them pull out of win last night yeah and I love that you used the deep end analogy because like that game really perfect perfectly like encapsulated it right like you just you were you were getting beat up a little bit but then inevitably they were just too tired and you're too good and too strong and that's what that last Drive was man that was just simply we are more talent and listen the Rams front we were very complimentary of the Rams defensive line yeah before that game and so it's not don't get it twisted man the Rams have some players on defense that's why that last series was so impressive right it's not like the Aiden Hutchinson was just blowing by their third string left tackle like no that's not what that was they have some players in there and those dudes were getting bullied with a capital B and again it goes back to what you were saying earlier about the Rams and again trying to I really do want to be complimentary because I do think like this team I'm right there with you I think this team is very good and we kind of said this in our preview that defensive line is Young and it's going to be very interesting to see how they develop together when you're talking about Jared verse Brandon Fisk Kobe Turner Byron young like they got some young dudes that like if they all continue to ascend at the same Pace together watch out but I think that level of inexperience showed itself in in overtime right and Dan basically was like no we have the horses like they're not they don't know what it's like to play play in an NFL overtime game right like so let's let's just Pound The Rock and see if they can stop it and I just think like that's inexperience that kind of more so showed itself in that moment yes Detroit imposing their will but you think about it veteran offensive line Veteran running back going up against first and second year defensive lineman like it's it's going to break your way or at least it should not saying it's going to but it should break your way yeah they had bright moments you know verse beat Decker for that for his sack that was a nice move nice move then he was having trouble anchoring against pan Which everyone else does too brother you're not alone there so and then Kobe Turner was getting body Frank ragn treatment he was getting worked yeah Frank feeling good man and yeah like that's what it boiled down to the Lions have all pros and sometimes football is a very intricate complex game and other times it's uh my guy is better than you like that last I'm so I'm doing the last Ser the last series right now at overtime I clipped all those it was eight plays and I can't wait to I'm just going to write like a little short like a a write up for Pride detroit.com so definitely check that out and they were just resetting the line of scrimmage man like the the one yard touchdown run they caved in the whole right side of the line they made it look easy bro like way too easy and McVey called a timeout just so they would have a second to breathe and it's still they still got was like still didn't matter but yeah that's that's sometimes that's what it boils down to and uh I stand I'm give Ben Johnson and Dan Campbell and them credit because let's not be cute right now like let's just let's just get a dve and go to sleep because everyone was tired yeah and we'll get back to that in a minute because I do think there's a there's a question that I have on here that I think really does lend itself to what you were just saying about them maybe getting a little too cute at moments but like we were talking about earlier this line team is is definitely more talented and a lot of their young talent and Veteran Talent are all ascending at the right moment and in that game a lot of players showed it off when you look back on that game who would you have to call out as your standout player I mean I'm gonna probably like it would be tough I would say the offensive line as a whole there at the end but I would say Monty I think we got to go Monty um I know J Mo made a bunch of Splash plays but the the the passing game was just so inconsistent and clunky it just felt like you know there was rust on it and they need some WD40 and like some movement and everything will be copesthetic moving forward but yeah Monty man setting the tone there was a weird time and I can't I need to go back and look at the snap logs but I feel like he was gone for like four or five series like and I love jir but I was like where is mon so you know you're not wrong like Monty didn't play I believe it's like most of the fourth quarter like he he took a couple snaps his last last snap before overtime I believe was in the third quarter at like the 12 minute Mark he did not get another carry maybe he got other snaps but he didn't get another carry or Another Touch I believe until the fourth quarter in overtime or overtime like yeah weird and yeah it's it's it was a weird thing and I think for that like Monty is definitely like the the Crown Jewel right like he definitely like left his mark on the game at the end and that's why they were able to win but for me it it has to be J Mo because in that same way what you were saying when the passing attack was so clunky when your quarterback only throws for 217 yards and 121 of them go to one guy and that one guy was looking good like was looking every bit the player that you traded up for when he was still dealing with an ACL injury J Mo deserves every bit of the flowers that he's getting today he deserved that game ball that he got he deserved to have that reaction to getting a game like that he is a he is a Living testament to like hard work and perseverance and not letting narratives get to you because you and I both know this as fans right like people were starting to get a little tired of J right he comes back after the ACL injury and it doesn't quite look like what people thought it would look like he gets the suspension and people are starting to question whether or not he's mature enough to play in the NFL and then he has you know a couple hamstring inj injuries and he's not you know tracking the ball well on some of the deep routes there were all these different narratives and there was so many things that people were starting to pile up on him for him to have a game like this where yes he has the Deep the double move that he beats travius white for to get the touchdown but just like you and I talked about last year some of the most impressive things that J does is in the short yardage space where he's catching a a Crossing route and watching him get vertical and and be able to make plays in that way and so in a game where Aman rosain Brown isn't featured as much as we're used to seeing like I said and and Sam Lea isn't quite making his impact Jameson Williams carried the load for this offense in the passing attack and it's something else that's going to put the rest of the league on notice of like hey we can't just focus on Saint because that dude number nine will literally take over a game by himself yeah I love that he put this on tape week one because if I'm you know if I'm Tampa Bay prepping for this game I'm like man this is not good because now the the lines have the the speed to stretch a defense both vertically and horizontally like we saw last night when he catches those those drags and just turns it up and starts erasing angles like he did at Bama like making other worldclass athletes look like they're moving in mud that's when you're like oh my god there was one play that he did that on where I feel like the safety just like saw him start to accelerate and was just like bro this ain't even worth it like no and he took a good angle I like you know because you have to you have to start like oh my God I just have to beat him to the sideline because at this point I'm not going to get like once he starts striding it's really really impressive especially in person I love watching him run he was about to do on his touchdown he was GNA do I want to say it was he do another Superman dive yeah he was absolutely about to do another Superman dive and travius white clipped him at just the right moment and Rand is going to get on him man he needs to I don't care as long he doesn't hurt himself but he's just having fun but yeah it I I'm not mad at you for it uh cuz he he really did like the plays were always timely too that ball also like to his credit that was not a good ball that go threw him behind go had to or J Mo had to spin back to his uh outside shoulder catch it low so it's not that wasn't easy no but and again it's a maturation of his game right these are things that we were questioning him about before like he's not turning the right way or he's not you know he doesn't seem to be able to track the ball well like for him to do that on those types of plays and yeah they they missed on some other big connections where J Mo probably could have had two or three touchdowns in this game that just again mistimed or just overthrows or things of that nature but it's a it's a like you said it's so good to see him do it in week one because I think it does it puts everyone else on notice because everyone knows about St Brown and him being a top five wide receiver everyone knows about Sam Lorton being a top three top two possibly tight in in the NFL and now you're going to have to worry about this kid named Jameson Williams and it's like you and I were talking a lot this offseason about like Hey how do you replace the Josh Reynolds production it it might just be J like it's just J yeah different players but like it's just it has a different effect on defenses obviously like we just talked about with Jameson stretching the field I love that you made that point about like there was that other shot that gof took too uh where he just threw it to a spot in the end zone in our end zone that's where we sit yeah and it was nice I liked it because the def the defender didn't have a chance of getting it the only person who did was J it was like a little it was like two strides too far like you know dam was a little bit a little bit overthrown but I like that he's trying it because you know mo is a DB like that that puts that little voice in the back of your head like yeah you better not be too aggressive that things to happen yeah absolutely all right man so we talked about it a little bit earlier and I and as much is I would I don't want to be considered a wet blanket I don't want to be considered wet socks or any other type of wet type of garment at this moment but we did talk about this game being close and it was a little bit closer than I think most of us thought it would be not necessarily in score because I think even looking at some of the Pod scores like most of us had it within like three to to seven points but when you looked at it on the field Morgan this was a much closer contest on the field than I think a lot of people expected to be do you have any concerns coming out of this game like whether it's out of this game going into tample or out of this game going through the rest of the season did anything kind of pop up to you where you're like all right yeah they they really need to clean this up um if they expect to get to where they want to be at the end of the season I don't want to sound like a homer here but no just just because it's week one right and like we like the point I made earlier the Lions didn't pay like they certainly didn't even play close to their best game and they beat a really a really qu and in my opinion a playoff opponent in the Rams and this year too no I'm not talking just last year think they're going to be firmly in the mix in the NFC again so and the offense thing I don't I don't now if that becomes a an issue that we see over the course of like multiple weeks and yeah I'll be a little concerned if the offense continues to look just kind of like stuck in the mud or like just not running at an Optimum level but I I anticipate though cuz I mean shoot they even they got it down there at the end they look pretty good at the end I know the Lions they didn't really throw the ball but I think GTH you know connected on a couple big throws down there I remember the one laort uh you know that moved the chains there that one time so there were highlights so I think the offense will get their stuff together it's I you know still has all the makings of a very elite unit one of the best in football but I'm so I'm really happy about the defense because that's a tough I know I know NCA went out but it's still Cooper cut man former offensive player of the year really good player and terion looked really good uh Carlton Davis I thought looked really good like I'm very happy with both of those guys ability to tackle on the edge I know you like that moo as a DB yeah there was there was a couple times that I'm like oh like Kiren Williams had the edge uh and Carlton Davis was the force player like coming down and he broke down and made some tackles on a really tough Runner so I was impressed with that um there was a few Miss tackles here and there I know Brian branwin told Dan Campell he's like I won miss those tackles anymore don't worry man listen here they have a firm Unapologetic Brian brand supporter first couple Miss tackles I was like hey hey what the hell are we doing I know it was out of character and a couple of them yeah it was weird it was that's what I'm saying it was like that's why people I'm sure there's going to be someone like oh Homer but like that's why I don't really have these like long-term like do we think Brian Branch forgot how to tackle no like do do we think I'm is going to get shut down like multiple weeks now he's probably going to come out with his hair on fire next week cuz he's you know he's about to go in that locker room and be like what hold on let me look at the stats real quick three reception for 13 yards y'all got me effed up that's literally probably word for word if I were the buck I'd like this is going to be a tough week probably for us yeah you know you get heavy B of 14 yeah that's what I'm saying I just don't see and again they still came away with the win and there was enough good things like anzelone like anzalone's great night to me wasn't a coincidence like yes he's a good player he's obviously a veteran knows what he's doing but I think all the plays he made were a pretty good indicator that this defensive front is a lot more talented and disruptive than it was a year ago and you didn't even have DJ reader at your disposal like you saw good uh mix of Kyle Petco uh Chris Smith was in there m um so like imagine you get reader in there and there's even that's just it just allows your running backs to run free if you're a defensive lineman are you know occupying blocks and and defeating blocks then that's when your linebackers can get downhill and do fun things like was doing listen man if if people are gonna get in the comment section and call you a homer then I don't know they might get in the comment section and call me Mike blenny I don't know but I'm a little concerned right and it's not in any one particular person it's not in one particular coach it's not in one particular side of the football right my concern is that while I agree with everything you said and I do believe that the poor performance that we saw of the Lions yesterday was a combination of rust right A lot of these players a lot of these starters did not play in the preseason most of them did not play in the preseason terion and a couple the guys in the secondary did but like very little play in the preseason you also just like it's it's all that emotion that you're trying to get contained and being able to go out there and perform and then it's you have those two things combined with the fact of what we said earlier trying to give credit to our opponent Shawn McVey having an amazing game plan that you're going up against I still feel like one of the best quarterbacks one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the NFL in Matthew Stafford and Cooper Cup being still that guy I think Cooper cup once again reminded a lot of people I was just hurt last year don't think that I can't go out here and still get over a 100 yards easy really so my concern though becomes if this is rust if we are going to say that this is rust and this is just a little bit of like hey the Lions need to get their groove back the only concern I have is how long will it take did they knock all the rust off in week one and they can go into week two against Tampa and I'm not saying be every like 100% that team that we saw last year but are you better and and look looking more similar to what we're accustomed to does the offense get humming a little bit more consistently again I don't need Jerry G to throw for 400 yards you know every game or I don't need Aman ra to have over 100 yard receivings or or Gibbs and Monty to split and have 80 and 60 yards a piece but does it just look more efficient if that's the case if they can knock off that rust by next week great but I think if this rust hangs around a little too long Tampa's Tampa's good man Tampa's still the team to probably beat in the NFC South you have to go up against Arizona which I think if there was a game that you can get right Arizona's the one but you just kind of never know with a team like Arizona that has Kyler Murray and and Marvin Harrison Jr and things of that nature and then you have the Boogey Man I would kind of say to this Lions team the last few years in the Seattle Seahawks so it's like the sooner the Lions can knock off this rust the sooner they can get to a 4 and0 type of start that a lot of people think that they're capable of doing if not I think you run the risk of again maybe splitting these first four games where you're two and two I don't think you get to one and three I don't think like things are that bad but two- two maybe three in one if you're not able to again knock off the rust in some of these situations like you said Miss tackles are just are no no you just can't have them especially against like I said some of the skill talent that you're going to be going up against the next couple weeks can't afford to have those those types of miscues uh jarro go had a couple passes that like ah like those were I mean he had the one pick the other one I guess got overturned but it's like those are so critical and those again cause you to lose momentum so again I'm not raising the alarm saying like hey this team won't go to the playoffs but I just think like the longer it takes them to knock off any type of ring rust they have the more detrimental I think this season kind of becomes yeah and I get it like I get you know I'm just trying not to the way I always look at we one and really like the most of September to be honest with you it's like Bill bich always has that same like the real football's played in like November December January I that's that's a little drastic but like there are like do I think for instance like the Saints are 37 points better than the Panthers like no not every day like they I do I think theck bro I I think they're I don't think they're good but I'm my goodness gracious like that's a college score like oh my that really doesn't so even if the Lions would have W 41 to 10 yesterday I wouldn't i' like well like the Rams maybe had a pretty rough day so I try not to be over I try not to overreact but I 100% get what you're saying about the rust and my thing is offensively if they're able to sustain drives because that's another thing I the I need to go look but the time of possession had to have been wildly in favor of uh the Rams because yeah the LI we they really didn't sustain drives and I think that's what led to the defense slowly like kind of bleeding out a little bit towards the end where early on they only allow they allowed three points in the first half and the Rams kept driving the ball down the field settled for a field goal uh Stafford threw the pick to Kirby to closed the half essentially so I that to that point that you just had about time of possession 34 minutes and 56 seconds to the for the Rams 29 minutes and 45 seconds for the Lions so yeah very lopsided yeah like that's and I think if you sustain drives the Lions have enough playmakers that they're going to start score like you know same round Le pora J Mo jir Monty someone's going to make play and that's where the offense gets so good and I think now with J you get more explosives which hopefully because there were a lot of times last year where the lions in order to score had to you know they're they're stringing together plays you know there were chunk plays here and there but you know a lot of the time you know they're very much like Ling you to sleep in in a lot of situations and like waiting for their moment to kind of like take those deep shots but like I agree with you with with J kind of coming on like it does feel like they can take those shots whenever they want they don't necessarily always have to set up their shots um soften them up that way which makes it easier to run against man and I I think you can wear teams down so I'm with you though if if they're Rusty against Tampa and the Lions eek out another win against Tampa because I think Tampa's another team like you said it's going to be in the NFC playoff race they're playing well Baker Mayfield had a great week one but it's a team that you don't need to really mess around with like it it'd be nice to see like you know the Lions start humming Along on offense I defensively if we get some more of that I think yeah I don't think you're going to get better no I'm sorry you will get better quarterback because there are other good quarterbacks in this league that you're going to play against but like that level of of play from the defense you take out some of the penalties you clean up some of the tackling I think you had a Sound Performance you gave up 20 points that's enough to win football games if your offense is doing what they're supposed to be doing which reminds me before we get out of here I did want to bring this up because I mentioned it earlier when you brought up like you you know things getting kind of cute with David Montgomery that's another thing that like has me a little concerned right is that like at times that like maybe if they're trying too many things at one time like we know it works and I think sometimes I wish and I'm and I'm I'm sure a lot of fans feel this way too they wish that the Lions would just stick with whatever is working as much as we want to see J get involved or as much as we we may want to see leap Porter get involved if you're killing them with one thing run with it and I think that's kind of what I okay when I look at daavid Montgomery you and I were kind of talking about it like earlier where you know Monty didn't get another touch like I said until I believe it was overtime 45 of his 91 yards yeah of his 91 yards came in overtime organ like that's that's kind of telltell right like why wasn't he more Incorporated earlier in the game maybe you don't have to get all the way to overtime and again winning in overtime is still great but having to play an additional quarter of football or even an extra football puts so many of your players at risk where it's like if you can just handle Business and Regulation you don't have to worry about those types of things no doubt and I think T you know kind like that's why the Lions went for a two so many times back in Dallas last year because D cell Darren Campell didn't want to play any extra football at that point in the season which I get so but yeah I I you know I understand I definitely get where you're coming from and ideally you keep mon Mony I think that's someone like I we you know I think really highly of him I think you keep him featured all the time because he's something that progressively like as a offensive weapon gets more effective as the game wears on because of how he runs the ball and how the how physical and opposing this offensive line is like and yeah to your point sometimes it's it they keep it simple run behind uh 77 71 and 588 right and you'll be good and that's to mention to that point Monty's an excellent set man for J you allow him to beat up on the defensive line and allow that offensive line to soften them up when you do roll out jir Gibbs that's when you get those big runs that's when you get those nine 10 11 yard runs from J because everyone's like tired they're just we've had to deal with number five for the last you know eight possessions Now 26 comes in here and it's lighting us up like bro we just don't have it so hate to Hate to end it on that type of note where we were again bringing up concerns but at the end of the day it's positive vibes here in Detroit right lions are one to know they are on the track to doing exactly what a lot of us want to see them do which is repeat as you know NFC North division Champions getting into the playoffs and making that trk to the Super Bowl so one game down uh 16 more to go hope you guys enjoyed this video hope you guys have been enjoying all the content coming out of Pride Detroit these days it's only going to get a lot
