media Halloween movie that was mentioned in Chris Rock's 2014 film top five4 it is the eighth film in the media series and the second to not be adapted from a stage play the first being media's witness protection as it tells the story of media being enlisted by her nephew Brian to watch over his daughter Tiffany as she deals with different Horrors and a frag party around the corner the film was released on October 21 2016 by Lionsgate and despite receiving generally negative reviews gross $748 million against a120 million budget making it the third highest grossing media film a sequel titled Buu a media Halloween was released on the following year on October 20 2017 film plot Jonathan and his fraternity Brothers invite Tiffany Simmons and her friends rain mat Lee Deo and a reluctant a day Walker to a Halloween party Tiffany's Father Brian forbids her to attend and is later a gas at her smudy video chat with Jonathan that night media and Aunt bam distribute candy to trick or treaters though bam steals candy back from them Joe dresses as a clown to frighten the women with their friend having me love as his accomplice Brian arranges for media who brings along Joe Aunt bam and Hattie to stay at his house to prevent Tiffany from attending the party while he works late and takes his son Brian junor BJ to his ex-wife's house but his reluctance to put his foot down and be firm with his daughter appalls the four Elders to keep the ERS busy they can sneak out Tiffany and the still reluctant a day invent a ghost story that leads the superstitious adults to hide in the bedrooms upon overcoming the Superstition to check Tiffany's bed media realizes that the girls are at the party so she crashes it to look for Tiffany but gets ejected along with bam and Hattie after shutting the party down by turning off the music Upon returning home the women then put a permanent end to the party by calling the police on the Frat House a day overhears the brothers planning revenge against media and her friends the boys pose as the ghost from Tiffany's story hacking into the houses wiring and plumbing and sneaking into the attic media bam and Hatty flee the house pursued by the brothers and parigo as dressed as zombies Joe stays at the house and knocks out a frat boy dressed as a deranged clown who reveals Jonathan's scheme to Joe media runs into a church where a day's parents are ministers media comes to believe the supernatural threats are punishment for her sins and hope salvation will protect her a day in her parents then reveal Jonathan scheme with the former adding that it was payback against the women for shutting the party down a day media Hattie and Bam plan a come upet for the fraternity they return to Brian's house and force him to return home to deal with Tiffany's misbehavior but he continues to be reluctant to take any real action not wanting to use the old school methods that his father and Aunt used on him finally fed up media bam and Hade storm up to Tiffany's room to confront her pack her things to throw her out of the house and even take some things for themselves Tiffany looks to her father for help but when he refuses she finally calls him out for being such a pushover with everyone and reveals her knowledge of her mother cheating on him in their house as well as that she knew that he knew about her mother's infidelity and she was appalled when he didn't confront her this made her lose respect for her father at this Brian finally toughens up and helps the women pack up Tiffany's things he then confirms to Tiffany that he knew about the affair but took no action and walked away to protect Tiffany and her brother from all the drama and pan pain Brian explains that he makes the rules and decisions that he does to protect his children so they can live their lives and make mistakes responsibly he then issues Tiffany the ultimatum of either living there with him and abiding by his rules or packing up and going out into the streets on her own finally getting the message of what being an adult is truly about Tiffany apologizes to her father and the women for her behavior and agrees to live by her father's rules then the police ared to reveal that a day has gone missing an arrest Tiffany in connection with her disappearance the next day the police go to the Frat House scrambling to figure out what to do the brothers discover a day seemingly murdered corpse in the basement the officers arrest the boys along with Tiffany rain and Lee for a day's murder when they find the corpse they also arrest rain Lee and the boys for bringing the underage Tiffany and a day to the party they load everyone onto a prison bus with other prisoners and a brawl breaks out on the bus the boys and girls sanss Tiffany Panic until a day appears alive and unharmed the arrests were a prank to punish everyone's misbehavior the boys and girls apologized to the women at a day for everything they caused Brian a federal prosecutor reveals that the police officers are real Not actors as media had thought the police find marijuana in the frat house and an officer recognizes media she Joe and the brothers flee as the Tyler Perry's long running franchise many new converts but at nine films and counting it hardly needs to 11 on Metacritic which assigns a normalized rating the film has a score of 38100 based on reviews from 14 critics indicating generally unfavorable reviews 12 audiences pulled by cinemascore gave the film an average grade of air on an A plus to H scale film review 5 years ago my Roger Icom colleague Steven Boon and I wrote a very long online piece on Tyler Perry neither of us sought to dismiss him and I expressed much admiration both for how he built his own studio and for how brilliant actresses of color trusted him so passionately with their performances but I found his direction to be extremely problematic for examp example there were moments in For Colored Girls Where Perry was as Bonkers and fearless as Sam Fuller but he could never seal the deal in the visual way the Cinematic medium needed as for Perry's most famous character media I've always thought she worked better on stage where her broadness plays to the back of a theater filled with fans expressing fellowship and joning on the Christian music and message of the plays unlike many of media's Prior movies Tyler Perry's boo AIA Halloween didn't originate as a hit stage play the idea started there's a joke in Chris Rock's hilarious top five where the latest Tyler Perry production has made a fighting ghosts despite the mockery Perry liked the concept and shot this movie in six days the idea of a supernatural addition to Mia's Litany of pet peeves intrigued me I would have enjoyed seeing her cuss out demons and slap the taste out of the mouths of disrespecting Spirits unfortunately the only Supernatural aspect of Tyler Perry's boo AIA Halloween is the Boo in the title instead the lot concerns itself with Mia Tyler Perry trying to keep her great niece Tiffany diamond white from attending a Halloween party at the lamest fraternity I have ever seen when things go horribly arai for the Frat they plot a Halloween themed Vengeance on media and her cohorts Arun bam Cassie Davis Hatty patri lovely and Joe Tyler Perry Mia's nephew Brian Tyler Perry again summons her to his house to keep an eye on his daughter while he's out of town he fears she will disobey his orders and attend the Frat party Brian is a doormat whom Tiffany disrespects in ways that would never fly in a medor run household Tiffany's Behavior becomes the basis for the typical Whiplash inducing dramatic change in turn for which Perry's films are notorious before we get there however we have to deal with the party the pranks and the constant bickering between media and her crew I wish Perry had spent the time to craft some good scares even if they're supposed to be comedic the trailer pretty much covers everything you'll see in terms of Halloween themed material the entire frat subplot is Perry's attempt to bring in a younger crowd he casts several YouTube Sensations but outside of the moment when the elderly Hatty twerks to a tiger song these scenes are almost unwatchable a scene with the Frat inside a school bus is especially awful offensively trotting out gay Panic tropes that Perry unsuccessfully plays for laugh Tyler Perry's boo AIA Halloween fair is better when it focuses on Perry's broadly played cast of older characters Joe ant bam and Hattie are good for several Chuckles though their director often beats their gags into the ground Joe's extremely gruesome descriptions of the corporal punishment he dispensed on his son Brian provides some squirmy scary laughs and media is at her funniest when she's being unforgivably mean her takeown of a trick or treat her dressed like a cow is hilarious in its unflinching cruelty her line about having a h1k instead of a 401k made me laugh so hard I embarrassed myself at 103 minutes this film has way too much dead weight scenes are repeated over and over and some of the acting would not cut it in a school play but in the rare moments when Tyler Perry's boo aadia Halloween is firing on all cylinders it displays a cleverness which hints that with more time and a few more iterations of the script this might have been a good movie for the most part the film has a rushed haphazard quality that makes it feel like a selfish cash grab by its creator but I know better Perry's love for his audience radiates off the screen and is returned just as powerfully by his fans the real problem isn't that he's preaching to a built-in choir it's that the choir too easily forgives cinematic trespasses like this that's the Christian thing to do I suppose but I'm going to be a heathen here media would understand in January 2020 while Tyler Perry was on his media farewell tour stage play performances he talked very openly about his relationship with a character when asked if he would miss playing media Perry responded flatly no he went on to explain he never enjoyed playing media and that the costume and wig were UNC comfortable Perry would connect the success he saw Eddie Murphy having by assuming the roles of multiple characters and decided to lean into that too Perry would admit that playing media created a do2 billion media Empire but still hated the character in June 2021 Perry and Netflix announced media would be returning to a film on their streaming platform boo is a furious film there was a three-year gap between aate Christmas and this feature the longest gap between films in the metaverse the film is centered on Tiffany Simmons diamond white the teenage daughter of Brian Perry Tiffany and her friends plan to sneak out to attend a Halloween party at a nearby fraternity house but her father is determined to stop this while Brian cannot stay at home to keep an eye on his daughter he knows just who can mie also Perry her brother Joe Perry again Aunt bam Cassie Davis and Hattie patri lovely are called in to monitor the house Tiffany is no dummy and goes about spinning a story of murder and Haunting in her old Georgia home that sends the old folks into a tizzy the first thing you'll notice while watching Buu is that Perry has become even lazier in his Film Production it was always apparent the filmmaker showed little interest in the technical aspects of movies in some of his earlier movies the boom mic stopped working so we got audio from the onboard camera mics there were shots clearly out of focus editing was always a mixed bag But as time went there seemed to be some competency coming into the work Buu showcases Perry's abandonment of that goal with the four main comedian characters spending most of the movie sitting on couches in a living room I would argue that 70% of the film takes place in this single living room with four cameras just cutting back and forth between the elders as they quip there is a scene in this movie that a thesis could be written about it is one of the angriest hateful pieces of Cinema I have ever witnessed when the four seniors arrive Brian explains why he needs them to keep an eye on Tiffany they voice disapproval of what they perceive to be weak parenting this leads to Joe and M is sharing stories about how they brutally abused Brian as a child media tries to justify her abuse of Brian by saying she always took him to the hospital after beating him Joe is where the real Sinister thoughts of the film emerge as he tells a story of throwing Brian off the roof of his house and breaking his legs this is also the first media film where the nword is uttered by Perry as Joe with such Venom in his voice when he says it and this sequence is meant to be read as comedy Perry's writing of people showcases a seeming disconnect with how humans speak and behave the Frat Boys Are One significant example of this the teenage girls make it to the party and it's clear these men don't know they have children in their midst once they become aware these are 17-year-old girls they start freaking out and making jokes about being arrested for sexually assaulting minors they also tell the girls they have to leave if your worldview is derived from poorly written sitcoms this might play out as believable but it's more an effort to whitewash an institution with a history of sexual abuse this is why Mia shortsighted moralizing plays are so funny Perry has to argue from a reactionary perspective about morality and the proper behavior of ladies which leads him to create soften threats so he doesn't have to address the agency of men in these situations the girls are short-sided and driven by hormones while the Frat Bros yes loud and crass are actually very well-meaning young men that don't want to sexually violate a young woman the only person Perry feels interested in tearing apart here is his own stand and Brian Brian is not only mocked for I guess being the victim of child abuse he's also weak because his wife cheated on him that's another Lazy Point in the film in that it disregards Brian's previously established wife from Diary of a Mad Black Woman Who was a drug addict now Brian's wife is a successful professional married to a new man with whom she cheated on Brian there's no big moral bombshell as in previous pictures I recall big happy family and its uncle's rape revealed instead buo is an insane moral questionable descent into Perry's profound anger about being this character and how much he seems to hate making these movies we still have two movies to go and I guarantee you they get angrier and move into homophobia transphobia while this is not a fun watch it is pretty eye openening this is one of the highest grossing media films ever made a budget of $120 million turned into $1.75 million in returns despite how upsetting and frankly lazy the picture is it appealed to a considerably large number of people which should be deep deeply unsettling it's also a call for more better made black films instead of relying on Tyler Perry to carry the industry Halloween 2016 is the scariest it's been since we thought there were real witches up in Salem we are weeks away from an election that could give us a president as orange as a Jacko lantern that wouldn't just decompose after a few weeks it's terrifying and we could all use some cathis no matter the source it may just be the bad vibes talking but the image of Tyler Perry's media racing down a street screaming help Jesus with zombies heart on her Trail seems slightly profound it's an unexpected reaction to one of Perry's lowbudget comedies that mostly trades in pratfalls and bardy invective before slamming into a wall of trickly pop psychology but it's a very strange time in America right now Tyler Perry is a horrible director and a rancid writer but I absolutely love media with Tyler Perry's Booth AIA Halloween she stars in her ninth feature film add that to a slew of plays television appearances and a direct to DVD cartoon and it's undeniable that she is a pop culture icon she is rude loud violent boastful of her criminal past but for reasons psychologists could only understand We crave her approbation her thorny approach to life flies in the face of every family value that seemingly serves Perry's wholesome audience and this is why he's a genius somehow when media does the horrible thing it's all right and when she finally comes around and does something decent it's like a big warm hug I'd like to take a second look at at Tyler Perry's boo a Mia Halloween with a stopwatch just to see how much of it is devoted to extoling the virtues of corporal punishment in child rearing one awkwardly blocked scene consists of m a play by Tyler Perry and drag sitting in her straight laac nephew Brian's living room Brian is also played by Perry with her brother Joe Perry in a white week and her two Pals Aunt bam Cassie Davis and paty patri lovely and the four Elders Riff on whooping ass for what feels like forever if Andy Warhol ever came back from the dead the director of The 8 Hour film consisting of a single shot of the Empire State Building would be shocked at how long this sequence drags on but sprinkled among the deser morass are occasional firecrackers of brilliant stick based comedy Perry is an outstanding performer whose biggest laughs frequently come from spotted reactions of anger and frustration there's plenty of it in Tyler Perry's boot a made a Halloween yes I'm going to use the full name every time this movie is all about excess and it stems from a plot too ridiculous to spend much time I'm describing Brian's 17-year-old daughter Tiffany diamond white wants to sneak out to a costume party at a nearby frat house but to do this she and her palade Lisa kosi have to Spook the old chaperons with a spooky tail then they head to the party get found out and there follows a series of increasingly far-fetched pranks the Final Act shoves a message in our face something about kids respecting their parents and parents rejecting today's nambi pambi parenting methods and getting tough it Crescendo in a series of gay pan Panic jokes when Brian and media pretend someone's throat gets slashed and all the kids end up on a prison bus it's just one of the many moments of tonal strangeness but rather than dwelling on that it's much more fun to remember the scenes of media knocking the wind out of evil clowns or ant bam griping about her hip surgery and toking on more medical marijuana there's also the Absurd moment when a horny frat boy suggests going to fifth base and a riff in which media tries to get a preacher to hurry up past his praying while making an emergency phone call it's truly a Marvel of extemporized non-verbal comedy it's just that these moments come amid so much filler I can't call Tyler Perry's boo a media Halloween anything resembling a good film it's shocked with the production values of a television sitcom but it is so relentless that like gorging on a bag of trick or treat candy it's undeniably addictive before the stomach ache comes Tiffany diamond white the spoiled princess heroin of Tyler Perry's boo Heria Halloween is 17 years old which means that she must have been around five when Perry's first movie came out it's a sign of how the world has evolved since then that boo opens with a sequence set in a mostly white fraternity Absalon Theta on the day of its annual Halloween bash Tiffany trying to win the approval of her two older white friends will wind up sneaking out of her house joining the party and narrowly avoid being pounced on by Jonathan yasa rakad the Frat president who looks like a geek Vin Diesel but there isn't a moment in any of this that involves so much as is a buried hint of racial awareness unless of course you count the fact that half of the film's Frat Boys talk like gangsters it's simply a non-issue and that you might say is progress of course this being a Tyler Perry movie it's also set in a place where things haven't evolved at all and that's the one occupied by Tiffany's great aunt media that old school badass front helan who never gets old it has something to do with her rage and with how quickly she talks Perry done up in pearls on a dress of crimson pastely larg enough to house a refrigerator plays media as always by tearing through his lines as if the character's very existence depended on her beating everyone to the punchline no one speaks as fast as media not her relatives not the Innocence she brow beats into submission not the dreaded popo she may look like a sty church lady but she's a boy Homespun terrorist with the street in her blood in boo she's always referencing her younger life on the pole and she's not ashamed of anything she's done the film's tone is set by a casually out rageous talk she has with her comrades the genal but dope smoking cousin Aunt bam Cassie Davis who keeps her prescription card in hand and the infantile Hatty patus lovely along with Mia's ancient white-haired brother Joe also played by Perry that's all about the vital importance of domestic corporal punishment W says Media or as hadie puts it in her lispy baby talk W that a a little love tap never hurt nobody adds media all common sensical good cheer Brian M's nephew the one character played by Perry out of Disguise might beg to disagree the beatings he endured traumatized him and so did the moment when Joe tossed him off a roof and a pencil got lodged in his testicle look like one of them Tootsie Rolls smirks Joe the audience is tempted to take Brian's side on this yet Perry has never put media up on screen in order to demonstrate that she's wrong boo a media Halloween preaches the gospel of stern discipline that new dads like Brian have lost it's another of Perry's rockus and slovenly comedies of responsibility which means that its heart is in a very old and right place if only a message that was this solid equal solid laughs the movie set on what media calls holline comes on like a hip-hop Animal House Party comedy but then media crashes and ruins the party it gets shut down by the popo and the Frat dudes extract their Revenge by taking advantage of the Fright Night holiday to scare the holy bessus out of media and her Giza cronies they don't have to put much of a show the whole joke is that media beneath her cranky Bluster is full of fear which is what growing up with the popo will do to you now there's a Nuance of race all the Frat Boys have to do is send one of their own into Mia's home dressed as a killer clown or chase after her on the road like zombies I only wish that I could say she lived up to the movie's ad campaign by retaliating with a chainsaw but that image is not in the movie boo she'd have little trouble connecting with Perry's fans who as the media rarely bothers to to acknowledge are now a multi-racial audience the actors playing the old folks of scattered fits of inspiration though you wish their material had been a little more shaped patus lovely inhabits the old bent Lusty hatti with a deep down sneakiness and a voice like a siren and Perry makes the happy to be disgruntled Joe a character worthy of Eddie Murphy in his prime media at this point is beyond a character she's a force the Whirlwind who keeps on giving even if her ability to truly surprise us left the building long ago poor TI on the other hand is a heroin in search of a third dimension though when her bratus finally gets to come up and it'ss touching boo AIA Halloween isn't really in favor of a good weapon it's just in favor of parents taking back their Authority in a way that they seem increasingly challenged to do that's a message so sane that it could and should have been a self-help book instead of a comedy impersonating one Tyler Perry's boo a media Halloween is Mr Perry's 16th feature film as a director and it shows him just barely more Adept in this respect as he was for his first outing Mia's family reunion 2006 his shot composition is rudimentary at best his blocking of action is practically indifferent and his editing rhythms run the gamut from hobble to stumbling all of which matters only to the viewer actively looking at those aspects of the picture Mr Perry is also an eccentric inspired performer and his screen filling Antics as the rockus but righteous media a character who runs through Mr Perry's stage film and TV work work is the truly pertinent component here in this picture Mr Perry also plays Brian Simmons a harried single dad and Brian's white-haired spectacularly rude father Joe these adults unite after a fashion to reign in Brian's rebellious 17-year-old daughter Tiffany diamond white who's determined to party with the residents of a local frat house the minations of this plot generate little interest but there is some raw Amusement to be had say when media and one of her neighbors UNT bam Cassie Davis Raz young trick or treaters media referring to an overweight boy in a cow costume as biggie is bad taste at its most timeless or when the fierce quisa matriarch and her crew Council Brian on the types of corporal punishment he ought to be inflicting on his child as the comic interaction between the three Perry's Mia is Brian's ant is Davis and patus lovely's constantly confounded hat he heats up the film making improves to accommodate it the editing gaining the assuredness to land every Lifeline successfully this says something about Mr per priorities as an Entertainer greatest hit catchphrases including multiple references to the Poo abound the whole thing eventually devolves into the mastrum of reactionary moralizing that is Mr Perry's specialty not that any informed viewer would have reasoned to expect otherwise since I've started this site I've written a lot of reviews in case you missed some of my earlier ones I would like to share an older review of boo AIA Halloween which originally appeared here media Tyler Perry winds up in the middle middle of Mayhem when she spends a hilarious haunted Halloween fending off Killers paranormal poltergeists ghosts Ghouls and zombies while keeping a watchful eye on a group of misbehaving teenagers this isn't exactly a horror film but the big draw here has to be seeing the character of media put in a horror type situation this is still a media film so it can only go so far with the horror in terms of the media film series I was aware of the characters but I had no idea how many films there actually were because of this people are surely tired of the character after so many films but being my first experience with the character I'm not quite there the story took a while to get started and started off with a 17-year-old girl named Tiffany Simmons diamond white while walking home from school her and her 17-year-old friend a deisa kosi along with two cooler older girls named Rain Bella Thor and Le Lexi panta get CED by a group of Frat Boys who want them to come to their Halloween party of course she wants to go along with the cooler girls but her Father Brian also Perry forbids it Brian worried that Tiffany will go to the party while he's gone and list his aunt media also Perry to watch him media doesn't come alone however as she brings her brother Joe also Perry Mia's cousin Aunt bam Cassie Davis and her friend hadie patus lovely to help the plot explores the generation gap between Brian and media and her group Brian's way of doing things is a lot different as he tries to distance himself from how he was raised media and the other older people often criticize Brian on his parenting Style once Brian leaves things got started and the generational Gap is more evident when they begin to impose their views watching the older people talk about the way things were and the way they should be was kind of funny despite sometimes being on the cheesy and caricature side the next hurdle for Tiffany was to try and outsmart the old people so she in a day could go to the party they are old people after all so it was pretty easy to do it once Tiffany concocted a story involving a vengeful spirit that comes out on Halloween and takes a life and the only safe place was in a bedroom room all the older people fell for it but media was still skeptical or at least trying to hide the fact that she was scared it didn't take long for Mia to figure out that she was gone leading to a great confrontation with the much younger people at the Frat party the surprising thing was how well they fit in when their presence becomes a disruption they are thrown out leading them to call the police as retaliation the Frat guys decide to prank the old people by scaring them leading to all the horror type situations the Frat guys were definitely the weakest part of the film depicted as cliched caricatures luckily they weren't around for long the film took a long time to get there but this was the best part of the film watching characters interact with each other and with what was happening was fun to watch the scares were mostly generic so the film relied more on the delivery of the older characters it was obvious to us what was happening but watching their reactions was hilarious there just wasn't enough of it choosing to end with the cliche lesson for the Frat guys and also Tiffany and Brian the performances from the older characters were good all around with Perry bringing the silly with his performances as media and Joe what helped to bring out the performances was the script and the direction which worked to the actor's strengths the majority of the dialogue was on the silly side but it wasn't all about what the characters said but how they said it this came from the direction after so many films Perry kind of knows what works and people key movie review ghosts goblins Things That Go Bump in the night they're no match for a mad black woman that's right m is back and if there's one thing that we've learned from the dozen or so movies she's appeared in she doesn't scare easily oh sure she fears the police but what woman with so many outstanding warrants wouldn't be a little wary of the popo she's shown a certain reluctance to go to church but maybe that's prudent considering the threat of erant lightning but should a vampire try to stick his fangs in made his ample neck he'll spend the next few months sipping hemoglobin through a straw and she sure isn't scared of any smart mouth good thing that's because Brian made his soft spoken nephew is Raising just such a truculent teenager Tiffany's her name and at 17 she's perfected the dismissive ey role she feels like she knows all the world's secrets and is ready to make her own decisions so what if her father doesn't want her sneaking off to a nearby frat house for a wild Halloween party with her friends if Tiffany wants to do it Tiffany will see it done Brian divorced now and raising two kids by himself is at the end of his parental test he he can't stand guard on Halloween he tries to get Tiffany to spend the evening at her mother's house but the teen bulks at that idea as a last resort Brian phones media and asks her to make sure that Tiffany stays put Mia agrees once Brian offers to pay her and brings her posy to help Aunt bam who smokes more marijuana than Seth roen Patty a shortish woman with a speech impediment and her elfish brother Joe but Tiffany with her own reluctant friend a day and Tow refuses to be cowed by the geriatric cartel there's a party to go to after all and go she will so she decides to spin a story of how the family homes ghost Mr Wilson comes out to play every Halloween always looking for new souls to add to his collection there's only one sure way to survive the evening Tiffany says to lock yourself in a bedroom and just stay put bam and Hatty are inclined to believe Tiffany Joe's just too Stone to care but Mia knows a thing or two about sneaky kids when she opens up Tiffany's bedroom door and finds the room empty she's not surprised and she's certainly not scared the child went to the party made you NOS there's nothing for it but to go to the Frat bash herself and soon everyone learns that to paraphrase Franklin D Roosevelt there is nothing to fear but media herself positive elements if you're familiar with Tyler Perry's media character you know she's no role model but if folks listen to what she said more often while ignoring nearly everything she does they might be better for it media believe believes that folks should be strong self-reliant unfailingly courteous to old people and she'll try to instill those traits in those around her even if she has to beat them to the point of death to do it in boo AIA Halloween she Haddie and Bam encouraged Tiffany to recant of her whiny teenage ways she also Spurs Brian to act more like a dad Brian admits that his read parents should be their kids friends media has no respect for such nonsense kids don't need their parents to be friends she says they need parents and that means that parents sometimes have to put their foot down and Dole out punishment sometimes harsh punishment if need be spoiler warning media and Co then turn on the still disobedient Tiffany pulling clothes out of her closet and telling her that if she's not going to obey her pops she might as well be on her way they tell her that everything she owns was pretty much paid for by Brian and thus not really hers Brian joins in the packing reinforcing the well-worn notion that if Tiffany's going to live in Dad's house she'll have to listen and obey the dad who pays for it while folks might quibble with a threat of throwing a 17-year-old girl out on the street the lesson underneath this demonstration of tough love is a valuable one media also tells Tiffany it's important to cut her parents some slack too they are not God she says they're parents and thus prone to mistakes of their own spiritual elements a day Tiffany's friend is a past's kid she talks about how her family doesn't typically celebrate Halloween but they do have a celebration over at the church last year she says she dressed up as the Holy Ghost apparent zombies Chase Media into a church where she meets a day's Mom and Dad help me Jesus media shouts repeatedly as she barrels down the aisle a day's Mother tells media that she'll be fine if she just accepts Jesus into her heart as Savior and confesses her sin M agrees to the first part but declines the confession aspect of salvation for now she doesn't think that the congregants or perhaps even the walls of the church itself would be able to deal with hearing all of her sins she does wind up getting saved but when she hears that the zombies outside were actually frat members she immediately starts backsliding Mia longs to curse inside the church and shouts cursing demon I bind you she plots her revenge against the Frat and when the pastor reminds her about jesus' command to turn the other cheek media says she aims to kick some cheeks Jesus didn't have in mind she finally leaves the church and the frustrated Pastor saying that some sometimes salvation just doesn't take we hear many references to God Jesus and church Aunt bam hadie media and others often implore God for help with bam suggesting several times that a little prayer wouldn't go a Miss especially when they're all being attacked by Supernatural entities a Jacko Lantern outside Bam's house is carved with I heart Jesus though media wonders why bam is giving candy to heathens media claims she had all the lights on in her bedroom because she was reading the Bible when asked where that Bible is she says on the table in my heart there are references to demons and Devils too Tiffany trots out a game designed to contact the dead obviously a knockoff Ouija board which M insists should be put away immediately keep playing with the devil she tells Tiffany he going to show up she also talks about how Voodoo was everywhere in her hometown of New Orleans Brian doesn't want Tiffany to go to the party for obvious reasons those boys wants just one thing he tells Tiffany when her younger brother asks what that is Brian lies saying to pay their student lines Tiffany doesn't care she wants to keep Pace with a couple of popular risque friends who wear crop tops that show as a day says what the good lord gave them a day goes to the party dressed fairly modestly but the other three do not wearing outfits that display lots of cleavage and leg one of the girls Lee wears a Fong over some rear embracing leggings and she spends a good portion of the party that we see at least twerking and giggling as she wears aves her backside to the camera guys Usher a day and Tiffany into private bedrooms with a suggestion that they'll be able to get more intimate there the couples never kiss or make physical contact when the frat brothers learn that both are just 17 they recoil in horror and kick the kids out of the party their friends Lee and Rain lie about their ages M exposes her breast to frat brothers or her shirt hides them from the camera and encourages them to touch them they do and when they realize they're real the young men are horrified media makes references to her younger days when she was a stripper when she begins dancing against her will to the music she says it's her inner coming out rain and Lee dance Sully together for a second or two in the background Joe makes references some with gestures to masturbation prostitution group sex and oral sex people ugle each other and make crude comments on how they'd like to see various bits uncovered revelers wear revealing outfits criminals being taken to prison crudely come on to same sex characters much to those characters discomfort Tyler Perry Mia's Creator plays Mia himself of course there are a few winking references to how manlike Mia is Joe for instance suggests that Mia may actually have a prostate hidden somewhere under the dress violent content a body is found in the Frat House its throat sliced open and blood dribbling down the front there's a huge frackers on a bus where several people fight when it comes to scary situations M's fight or flight reflexes are predominantly set on fight she punches apparently evil clowns in the face Joe knocks one out with a cane she hits a frat guy or two as well both Mia and Joe regularly lured the effectiveness of corporal punishment encouraging Brian to beat some sense into his daughter a bam and Hade also affirmed physical violence against waywood kids they remind Brian that they often gave him love Taps and that they never Hur him Brian remembers some of those TS a bit differently they recall the time time when Mia beat him so badly that it necessitated a trip to the emergency room but she adds I'd at least take you to the hospital Joe Brian's father would do No Such Thing One Day Joe apparently pushed Brian off a roof and somehow his scrotum got skewed by a pencil Brian reminds his Elders that this is a different time that people can be arrested for those supposed love Taps these days but later He suggests he's willing to go to jail if launching into a little corporal punishment would help his daughter rude or profane language we hear about 20 uses of the s word and four or five of the nword Brian scolds Joe for using that sort of language in Brian's house God's name is misused once while Lord is used a half dozen times in contexts that could be heard either as profane exclamations or spontaneous prayers milder profanities are hurled with the sort of rapidity one would expect from a particularly profane Gap gun H is used upwards of 120 times and DN another 75 times we also hear a PS and bch drug and alcohol content Joe and Bam both use marijuana complaining when various apparent Ghoulies interrupt their High Joe is Shan smoking a joint whenever someone discusses or questions Bam's pot habit she reaches inside her dress and whips out her medicinal marijuana card she brandishes it in front of police officers bragging that she's completely legal she also complains about getting the munchies police find marijuana in the Frat House media and others light and smoke cigarettes other negative elements Bam's bathroom habits are a source of conversation media reminds her that she wets herself a little when she gets scared prompting bam who was startled in her front yard to walk into her home to change her underwear but later she complains of her inability to urinate more than just a couple of drops at a time when she learns that Brian's own privates had a literal runin with a pencil she suggests with a giggle that he must have a more difficult time than she does frat guys apparently vomit after touching Mia's breasts Aunt bam steals candy from trick or treaters Tiffany spends a lot of the movie talking back disrespecting and disobeying her father conclusion har media love her or hate her there's no one quite like her I think a lot of people like media for the same reason that people like old west Gunslingers or shoot first detectives media represents a kind of No Nonsense take no prisoners Justice she'll get folks to act right even if she has to beat them to do it but the very thing that makes her attractive also makes her and her movies so problematic media demands respect but she doesn't give it she believes that the golden rule that doing unto others is a great thing as long as it's others that are doing it now I know that Mia herself would never hold herself up as a role model she's a comic character oversized and exaggerated in every way we're not supposed to view her as a blameless saint but just because we know who she is doesn't excuse all that she and her cohorts do all that cursing sexual innuendo and drug use doesn't disappear just because we're not supposed to take it seriously he eating it up the Frat characters were so cliched their performances came off as cringeworthy overall this was a fun silly horror comedy which was light on the horror and bogged down by some cliche family stuff but was elevated by its performances boo amadia Halloween is a 2016 American comedy horror 3 film directed written starring and co-producing uced by Tyler Perry the idea for the film originated from a fictitious media Halloween movie that was mentioned in Chris Rock's 2014 film top five for it is the eighth film in the media series and the second to not be adapted from a stage play the first being media's witness protection as it tells the story of media being enlisted by her nephew Brian to watch over his daughter Tiffany as she deals with different Horrors and a frat party around the corner the film was released on October 21 2016 by Lionsgate and despite receiving generally negative reviews gross $748 million against a120 million budget making it the third highest grossing media film a sequel titled Bo two a media Halloween was released on the following year on October 20 2017 film plot Jonathan and his fraternity Brothers invite Tiffany Simmons and her friends rain mat Lee Deo and a reluctant a day Walker to a Halloween party Tiffany's Father Brian forbids her to attend and is later a gast at her smudy video chat with Jonathan that night media and Aunt bam distribute candy to trick or treaters though bam steals candy back from them Joe dresses as a clown to frighten the women with their friend having me love as his accomplice Brian arranges for media who brings along Joe Aunt bam and Hattie to stay at his house to prevent Tiffany from attending the party while he works late and takes his son Brian June BJ to his ex-wife's house but his reluctance to put his foot down and be firm with his daughter appalls the four Elders to keep the alers busy so they can sneak out Tiffany and the still reluctant a day invented ghost story that leads the superstitious adults to hide in the bedrooms upon overcoming the Superstition to check Tiffany's bed media realizes that the girls are at the party so she crashes it to look for Tiffany but gets ejected along with bam and Hattie after shutting the party down by turning off the music Upon returning home the women then put a permanent end to the party by calling the police on the Frat House a day overhears the brothers planning revenge against media and her friends the boy pose as the ghost from Tiffany's story hacking into the houses wiring and plumbing and sneaking into the attic media bam and Hatty flee the house pursued by the brothers and parigo as dressed as zombies Joe stays at the house and knocks out a frat boy dressed as a deranged clown who reveals Jonathan's scheme to Joe media runs into a church where a day's parents are ministers media comes to believe the supernatural threats are punishment for her sins and hope salvation will protect her a day in her parents then reveal Jonathan's scheme with the former adding that it was payback against the women for shutting the party down a day media Hattie and Bam plan a comeuppance for the fraternity they return to Brian's house and force him to return home to deal with Tiffany's misbehavior but he continues to be reluctant to take any real action not wanting to use the old school methods that his father and Aunt used on him finally fed up media bam and Hade storm up to Tiffany's room to confront her pack her things to throw her out of the house and even take some things for themselves Tiffany looks to her father for help but when he refuses she finally calls him out for being such a pushover with everyone and reveals her knowledge of her mother cheating on him in their house as well as that she knew that he knew about her mother's infidelity and she was appalled when he didn't confront her this made her lose respect for her father at this Brian finally toughens up and helps the women pack up Tiffany's things he then confirms to Tiffany that he knew about the affair but took no action and walked away to protect Tiffany and her brother from all the drama and pain Brian explains that he makes the rules and decisions that he does to protect his children so they can live their lives and make mistakes responsibly he then issues Tiffany the ultimatum of either living there with him and abiding by his rules or packing up and going out into the streets on her own finally getting the message of what being an adult is truly about Tiffany apologizes to her father and the women for her behavior and agrees to live by her father's rules then the police ared to reveal that a day has gone missing and arrest Tiffany in connection with her disappearance the next day the police go to the Frat House scrambling to figure out what to do the brothers discover a day's seemingly murdered corpse in the basement the officers arrest the boys along with Tiffany rain and Lee for a day's murder when they find the corpse they also arrest rain Lee and the boys for bringing the underage Tiffany and a day to the party they load everyone onto a prison bus with other prisoners and a brawl breaks out on the bus the boys and girls sanss Tiffany Panic until a day appears alive and unharmed the arrests were a prank to punish everyone's misbehavior the boys and girls apologized to the women and a day for everything they caused Brian a federal prosecutor reveals that the police officers are real Not actors as media had thought the police find marijuana in the frat house and an officer recognizes media she Joe and the brothers flee as the film ends cast Tyler perers oh mael Mia Simmons a tough old lady oh Joe Simmons the brother of media oh Brian Simmons a Fort mcferson in Atlanta which became new home of Tyler Perry Studios 5 principal photography took place on the Army grounds from January 4 to April 8 20166 Perry turned the soldiers living quarters into sets for the film five box office boo a Mia Halloween gross7 3 2 million in North America and do1 6 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $1.74 8 million against a12 million budget one the film was released on October 21 2016 alongside weija origin of evil keeping up with the Joneses and Jack Reacher never go back and was expected to gross1 1517 million from two 260 first at the box office and ranking as the fourth Best debut for a Perry film 89 in its second weekend the film gross $17 2 million a drop of only 39 6% and despite facing competition with a newcomer inferno4 9 million remained first at the box office 10 critical response on review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 19% based on 42 reviews with an average rating of 388 under1 the site's critical consensus reads boo a media Halloween won't win Tyler Perry's long running franchise many new converts but at nine films and counting it hardly needs to 11 on Metacritic which assigns a normalized rating the film has a score of 38100 based on reviews from 14 critics indicating generally unfavorable reviews 12 audiences pulled by cinemascore gave the film an average grade of air on an A plus to f scale film review 5 years ago my Roger retcom colleague Steven Boon and I wrote a very long online piece on Tyler Perry neither of us sought to dismiss him and I expressed much admiration both for how he built his own studio and for how brilliant actresses of color trusted him so passionately with their performances but I found his direction to be extremely problematic for example example there were moments in For Colored Girls Where Perry was as Bonkers and fearless as Sam Fuller but he could never seal the deal in the visual way the Cinematic medium needed as for Perry's most famous character media I've always thought she worked better on stage where her broadness plays to the back of a theater filled with fans expressing fellowship and joning on the Christian music and message of the plays unlike many of media's Prior movies Tyler Perry's boo a media Halloween didn't originate as a hit stage play the idea started is a joke in Chris Rock's hilarious top five where the latest Tyler Perry production has made a fighting ghosts despite the mockery Perry liked the concept and shot this movie in six days the idea of a supernatural addition to M's Litany of pet peeves intrigued me I would have enjoyed seeing her cuss out demons and slap the taste out of the mouths of disrespecting Spirit unfortunately the only Supernatural aspect of Tyler Perry's boo a Mia Halloween is the Boo in the title instead the plot concerns itself with Mia Tyler Perry trying to keep her great niece Tiffany diamond white from attending a Halloween party at the lamest fraternity I have ever seen when things go horribly arai for the Frat they plot a Halloween themed Vengeance on media and her cohorts Aunt bam Cassie Davis Hattie patus lovely and Joe Tyler Perry Mia's nephew Brian Tyler Perry again summons her to his house to keep an eye on his daughter while he's out of town he fears she will disobey his orders and attend the Frat party Brian is a doormat whom Tiffany disrespects in ways that would never fly in a medor run household Tiffany's Behavior becomes the basis for the typical Whiplash inducing dramatic change in turn for which Perry's films are notorious before we get there however we have to deal with the party the pranks and the constant bickering between media and her crew I wish Perry had spent the time to craft some good scares even if they're supposed to be comedic the trailer pretty much covers everything you'll see in terms of Halloween themed material the entire frat subplot is Perry's attempt to bring in a younger crowd it casts several YouTube Sensations but outside of the moment when the elderly Hatty twerks to a tiger song these scenes are almost unwatchable a scene with the Frat inside a school bus is especially awful offensively trotting out gay Panic tropes that Perry unsuccessfully plays for Laughs Tyler Perry's boo AIA Halloween fair is better when it focuses on Perry's broadly played cast of older characters Joe ant bam and Hade are good for several Chuckles though their director often beats their gags into ground Joe's extremely gruesome descriptions of the corporal punishment he dispensed on his son Brian provides some squirmy scary laughs and media is at her funniest when she's being unforgivably mean her takeown of a trick or treater dressed like a cow is hilarious in its unflinching cruelty her line about having a h1k instead of a 401k made me laugh so hard I embarrassed myself in 103 minutes this film has way too much dead weight scenes are repeated over and over and some of the acting would not cut it in a school play but in the rare moments when Tyler Perry's boo aadia Halloween is firing on all cylinders it displays a cleverness which hints that with more time and a few more iterations of the script this might have been a good movie for the most part the film has a rushed haphazard quality that makes it feel like a selfish cash grab by its creator but I know better Perry's love for his audience radiates off the screen and is returned just as powerfully by his fans the real problem isn't that he's preaching to a built-in choir it's that the choir too easily forgives cinematic trespasses like this that's the Christian thing to do I suppose but I'm going to be a heathen here media would understand in January 2020 while Tyler Perry was on his media farewell tour stage play performances he talked very openly about his relationship with a character when asked if he would miss playing media Perry responded flatly note he went on to explain he never enjoyed playing media and that the costume and wig were uncom comfortable Perry would connect the success he saw Eddie Murphy having by assuming the roles of multiple characters and decided to lean into that too Perry would admit that playing media created a do2 billion media Empire but still hated the character in June 2021 Perry and Netflix announced media would be returning to a film on their streaming platform boo is a furious film there was a three-year gap between a at Christmas and this feature the longest gap between films in the metaverse the film is centered on Tiffany Simmons diamond white the teenage daughter of Brian Perry Tiffany and her friends plan to sneak out to attend a Halloween party at a nearby fraternity house but her father is determined to stop this while Brian cannot stay at home to keep an eye on his daughter he knows just who can mie also Perry her brother Joe Perry again Aunt bam Cassie Davis and Hade patri lovely are called in to monitor the house Tiffany is no dummy and goes about spinning a story of murder and Haunting in her old Georgia home that sends the old folks into a tizzy the first thing you'll notice while watching Buu is that Perry has become even lazier in his Film Production it was always apparent the filmmaker showed little interest in the technical aspects of movies in some of his earlier movies the boom mic stopped working so we got audio from the onboard camera mics there were shots clearly out of focus editing was always a mixed bag But as time went there seemed to be some competency coming into the work Buu showcases Perry's abandonment of that goal with the four main comedic characters spending most of the movie sitting on couches in a living room I would argue that 70% of the film takes place in this single living room with four cameras just cutting back and forth between the elders as they quip there is a scene in this movie that a thesis could be written about it is one of the angriest hateful pieces of Cinema I have ever witnessed when the four seniors arrive Brian explains why he needs them to keep an eye on Tiffany they voice disapproval of what they perceive to be weak parenting this leads to Joe and media is sharing stories about how they brutally abused Brian as a child media tries to justify her abuse of Brian by saying she always took him to the hospital after beating him Joe is where the real Sinister thoughts of the film emerge as he tells a story of throwing Brian off the roof of his house and breaking his legs this is also the first media film where the nword is uttered by Perry as Joe with such Venom in his voice when he says it and this sequence is meant to be read as comedy Perry's writing of people showcases a seeming disconnect with how humans speak and behave the Frat Boys Are One significant example of this the teenage girls make it to the party and it's clear these men don't know they have children in their midst once they become aware these are 17-year-old girls they start freaking out and making jokes about being arrested for sexually assaulting minors they also tell the girls they have to leave if your worldview is derived from poorly written sitcoms this might play out as believable but it's more an effort to whitewash an institution with a history of sexual abuse this is why Mia shortsighted moralizing plays are so funny Perry has to argue from a reactionary perspective about morality and the proper behavior of ladies which leads him to create soften threats so he doesn't have to address the agency of men in these situations the girls are shortsighted and driven by hormons while the Frat Bros yes loud and crash are actually very well-meaning young men that don't want to sexually violate a young woman the only person Perry feels interested in tearing apart here is his own standing Brian Brian is not only mocked for I guess being the victim of child abuse he's also weak because his wife cheated on him that's another Lazy Point in the film in that it disregards Brian's previously established wife from Diary of a Mad Black Woman Who was a drug addict now Brian's wife is a successful professional married to a new man with whom she cheated on Brian there's no big moral bombshell as in previous pictures I recall big happy family and its uncle's rape reveal instead buo is an insane moral questionable descent into Perry's profound anger about being this character and how much he seems to hate making these movies we still have two movies to go and I guarantee you they get angrier and move into homophobia transphobia while this is not a fun watch it is pretty eye openening this is one of the highest grossing media films ever made a budget of $120 million turned into $1.75 million in returns despite how upsetting and frankly lazy the picture is it appealed to a considerably large number of people which should be deep unsettling it's also a call for more better made black films instead of relying on Tyler Perry to carry the industry Halloween 2016 is the scariest it's been since we thought there were real witches up in Salem we are weeks away from an election that could give us a president as orange as a Jacko lantern that wouldn't just decompose after a few weeks it's terrifying and we could all use some catharus no matter the source it may just be the bad vibes talking but the image of Tyler Perry's media racing down a street screaming helped me Jesus with zombies hot on her Trail seems slightly profound it's an unexpected reaction to one of Perry's lowbudget comedies that mostly trades in Pratt Falls and bardy invectives before slamming into a wall of trly pop psychology but it's a very strange time in America right now Tyler Perry is a horrible director and a rancid writer but I absolutely love media with Tyler Perry's boo a Mia Halloween she stars in her ninth feature film add that to a slew of plays television appearances a direct to DVD cartoon and it's undeniable that she is a pop culture icon she is rude loud violent boastful of her criminal past but for reasons psychologists could only understand We crave her approbation her thorny approach to life flies in the face of every family value that seemingly serves Perry's wholesome audience and this is why he's a genius somehow when media does the horrible thing it's all right and when she finally comes around and does something decent it's like a big warm hug I'd like to take a second look at Tyler Perry's boo a made a Halloween with a stopwatch just to see how much of it is devoted to extoling the virtues of corporal punishment in child rearing one awkwardly blocked scene consists of made a play by Tyler Perry and drag sitting in a straight laac nephew Brian's living room Brian is also played by Perry with her brother Joe Perry in a white wig and her two Pal's Aunt bam Cassie Davis and Hattie patri just lovely and the four Elders RI on whooping ass for what feels like forever if Andy Warhol ever came back from the dead the director of The 8 Hour film consisting of a single shot of the Empire State Building would be shocked at how long this sequence drags on but sprinkled among the deser morass are occasional firecrackers of brilliant stick based comedy Perry is an outstanding performer whose biggest laughs frequently come from spotted reactions of anger and frustration there's plenty of it in Tyler Perry's boo a mayia Halloween yes I'm going to use the full name every time this movie is all about excess and it stems from a plot too ridiculous to spend much time I'm describing Brian's 17-year-old daughter Tiffany diamond white wants to sneak out to a costume party at a nearby frat house but to do this she and her palade lisak kosi have to Spook the old chaperons with a spooky tail then they head to the party get found out and there follows a series of increasingly far-fetched pranks the Final Act shoves a message in our face something about kids respecting their parents and parents rejecting today's nambi pambi parenting methods and getting tough it crescendo's in a series of gay panic jokes when Brian and media pretend someone's throat gets slashed and all the kids end up on a prison bus it's just one of the many moments of tonal strangeness but rather than dwelling on that it's much more fun to remember the scenes of media knocking the wind out of evil clowns or anband griping about her hip surgery and toking on more medical marijuana there's also the Absurd moment when a horny frat boy suggests going to fifth base and a riff in which media tries to get a preacher to hurry up past his praying while making an emergency phone call it's truly a Marvel of extemporized non-verbal comedy it's just that these moments come amid so much filler I can't call Tyler Perry's boo a media Halloween anything resembling a good film it's shot with the production values of a television sitcom but it is so relentless that like gorging on a bag of trick or treat candy it's undeniably addictive before the stomach ache comes Tiffany diamond white the spoiled princess heroin of Tyler Perry's Buu AIA Halloween is 17 years old which means that she must have been around five when Perry's first movie came out it's a sign of how the world has evolved since then that boo opens with a sequence set in a mostly white fraternity Absalon Theta on the day of its annual Halloween bash Tiffany trying to win the approval of her two older white friends will wind up sneaking out of her house joining the party and narrowly avoid being pounced on by Jonathan yasu irad the fra president who looks like a geek Vin Diesel but there isn't a moment in any of this that involves so much as a buried hint of racial awareness unless of course you count the fact that half of the film's Frat Boys talk like gangsters it's simply a non-issue and that you might say is progress of course this being a Tyler Perry movie it's also set in a place where things haven't evolved at all and that's the one occupied by Tiffany's great aunt media that old school badass Frum Helen who never gets old it has something to do with her rage and with how quickly she talks Perry done up in pearls in a dress of crimson pastely large enough enough to house a refrigerator plays media as always by tearing through his lines as if the character's very existence depended on her beating everyone to the punchline no one speaks as fast as media not her relatives not the innocent she brow beats into submission not the dreaded Popa she may look like a sty church lady but she's a boy Homespun terrorist with the street in her blood in boo she's always referencing her younger life on the pole and she's not ashamed of anything she's done the film's tone is set by a casually out rageous talk she has with her comrades the gal but dope smoking cousin Aunt bam Cassie Davis who keeps her prescription card at hand and the infantile hatti patus lovely along with Mia's ancient white-haired brother Joe also played by Perry that's all about the vital importance of domestic corporal punishment on says Media or as hady puts it in her lispy baby talk that a a little love tap never hurt nobody adds media all common sensical good cheer ran M his nephew the one character played by Perry out of Disguise might beg to disagree the beatings he endured traumatized him and so did the moment when Joe tossed him off a roof and a pencil got lodged in his testicle look like one of them Tootsie Rolls smokes Joe the audience is tempted to take Brian's side on this yet Perry has never put media up on screen in order to demonstrate that she's wrong boo AIA Halloween preaches the gospel of stern discipline that new dads like Brian have lost it's another of Perry's rockus and slovenly comedies of responsibility which means that its heart is in a very old and right place if only a message that was this solid equal solid laughs the movie set on what media calls Hollen comes on like a hip-hop Animal House Party comedy but then media crashes and ruins the party it gets shut down by the popo and the Frat dudes extract their Revenge by taking advantage of the Fright Night holiday to scare the holy bessas out of media and heriza cronies they don't have to put on much of a show the whole joke is that media beneath her cranky Bluster is full of fear which is what growing up with the popo will do to you now there's a Nuance of race all the Frat Boys have to do is send one of their own into Mia's home dressed as a killer clown or chase after her on the road like zombies I only wish that I could say she lived up to the movie's ad campaign by retaliating with a chainsaw but that image is not in the movie boo she'd have little trouble connecting with Perry's fans who as the media rarely bothers to knowledge are now a multi-racial audience the actors playing the old folks have scattered fits of inspiration though you wish their material had been a little more shaped patus lovely inhabits the old bent Lusty Hattie with a deep down sneakiness and a voice like a siren and Perry makes the happy to be disgruntled Joe a character worthy of Eddie Murphy in his prime media at this point is beyond a character she's a force the Whirlwind who keeps on giving even if her ability to truly surprise us left the building long ago poor Tiffany on the other hand is a heroin in search of a third dimension though when her brightness finally gets to come up and it'ss touching boo a made of Halloween isn't really in favor of a good weapon it's just in favor of parents taking back their Authority in a way that they seem increasingly challenged to do that's a message so saying that it could and should have been a self-help book instead of a comedy impersonating one Tyler Perry's boo a media Halloween is Mr Perry's 16th feature film as a director and it shows him just barely more Adept in this respect as he was for his first outing Mia's family reunion 2006 his shot composition is rudimentary at best his blocking of action is practically indifferent and his editing rhythms run the gamut from hobble to stumbling all of which matters only to the viewer actively looking at those aspects of the picture Mr Perry is also an eccentric inspired performer and his screen filling Antics as the rockus but righteous media a character who runs through Mr Perry's stage film and TV world is the truly pertinent component here in this picture Mr Perry also plays Brian Simmons a harried single dad and Brian's whiteair spectacularly rude father Joe these adults unite after a fashion to reign in Brian's rebellious 17-year-old daughter Tiffany diamond white who's determined to party with the residents of a local frat house the machinations of this plot generate little interest but there is some raw Amusement to be had say when media and one of her neighbors Aunt bam Cassie Davis Raz young trick or treaters media referring to an overweight boy in a cow costume as biggie is bad taste at its most timeless or when the fierce quisa matriarch and her crew counsel Brian on the types of corporal punishment he ought to be inflicting on his child as the comic interaction between the three Perry's Mia is Brian's ant is Davis and patus lovely's constantly confounded Hatty heats up the film making improves to accommodate it the editing gaining the assuredness to land every Lifeline successfully this says something about Mr Perry priorities as an Entertainer greatest hit catchphrases including multiple references to the Poo abound the whole thing eventually devolves into the mastrum of reactionary moralizing that is Mr Perry's specialty not that any informed viewer would have reasoned to expect otherwise since I've started this site I've written a lot of reviews in case you missed some of my earlier ones I would like to share an older review of boo AIA Halloween which originally appeared here media Tyler Perry winds up in the middle of Mayhem when he spends a hilarious haunted Halloween fending off Killers paranormal poltergeists ghosts Ghouls and zombies while keeping a watchful eye on a group of misbehaving teenagers this isn't exactly a horror film but the big draw here has to be seeing the character of media put in a horror type situation this is still a media film so it can only go so far with the horror in terms of the media film series I was aware of the characters but I had no idea how many films there actually were because of this people are surely tired of the the character after so many films but being my first experience with the character I'm not quite there the story took a while to get started and started off with a 17-year-old girl named Tiffany Simmons diamond white while walking home from school her and her 17-year-old friend a deisa kosi along with two cooler older girls named Rain Bella Thorn and Lee Lexi panta get courted by a group of Frat Boys who want them to come to their Halloween party of course she wants to go along with the cooler girls but her Father Brian also Perry forbids it Brian worried that Tiffany will go to the party while he is gone en lists his aunt media also Perry to watch him media doesn't come alone however as she brings her brother Joe also Perry Mia's cousin Aunt bam Cassie Davis and her friend Hade patus lovely to help the plot explores the generation gap between Brian and media and her group Brian's way of doing things is a lot different as he tries to distance himself from how he was raised media and the other older people often criticize Brian on his parenting Style once Brian leaves things got started and the generational Gap is more evident when they begin to impose their views watching the older people talk about the way things were and the way they should be was kind of funny despite sometimes being on the cheesy and caricaturist side the next hurdle for Tiffany was to try and outsmart the old people so she and a day could go to the party they are old people after all so it was pretty easy to do it once Tiffany concocted a story involving a vengeful spirit that comes out on Halloween and takes a life and the only safe place was in a bedroom all the older people fell for it but media was still skeptical or at least trying to hide the fact that she was scared it didn't take long for media to figure out that she was gone leading to a great confrontation with the much younger people at the Frat party the surprising thing was how well they fit in when their presence becomes a disruption they are thrown out leading them to call the police as retaliation the Frat guys decide to prank the old people by scaring them leading to all the horror type situations the Frat guys were definitely the weak part of the film depicted as cliched caricatures luckily they weren't around for long the film took a long time to get there but this was the best part of the film watching characters interact with each other and with what was happening was fun to watch the scares were mostly generic so the film relied more on the delivery of the older characters it was obvious to us what was happening but watching their reactions was hilarious there just wasn't enough of it choosing to end with the cliche lesson for the Frat guys and also Tiffany and Brian the performances from the older characters were good all around with Perry bringing the silly with his performances as media and Joe what helped to bring out the performances was the script and the direction which worked to the actor's strengths the majority of the dialogue was on the silly side but it wasn't all about what the characters said but how they said it this came from the direction after so many films Perry kind of knows what works and people key movie review ghosts goblins Things That Go Bump in the night they're no match for a Mad Black black woman that's right m is back and if there's one thing that we've learned from the dozen or so movies she's appeared in she doesn't scare easily oh sure she fears the police but what woman with so many outstanding warrants wouldn't be a little wary of the Poo she's shown a certain reluctance to go to church but maybe that's prudent considering the threat of errant lightning but should a vampire try to stick his fangs in made his ample neck he'll spend the next few months sipping hemoglobin through a straw and she sure isn't scared of any smart mouth good thing that's because Brian made a soft spoken nephew is Raising just such a truculent teenager Tiffany's her name and at 17 she's perfected the dismissive ey role she feels like she knows all the world's secrets and is ready to make her own decisions so what if her father doesn't want her sneaking off to a nearby frat house for a wild Halloween party with her friends if Tiffany wants to do it Tiffany will see it done Brian divorced now and raising two kids by himself is at the end of his parental te he can't stand guard on Halloween he tries to get Tiffany to spend the evening at her mother's house but the teen bul at that idea as a last resort Brian phones media and asks her to make sure that Tiffany stays put media agrees once Brian offers to pay her and brings her posy to help Aunt bam who smokes more marijuana than Seth Roan Hattie a shortish woman with a speech impediment and her oldish brother Joe but Tiffany with her own reluctant friend a day in tow refuses to be cowed by this geriatric cartel there's a party to go to after all and go she will so she decides to spin a story of how the family homes ghost Mr Wilson comes out to play every Halloween always looking for new souls to add to his collection there's only one sure way to survive the evening Tiffany says to lock yourself in a bedroom and just stay put bam and Hatty are inclined to believe Tiffany Joe's just too Stone to care but Mia knows a thing or two about sneaky kids when she opens up Tiffany's bedroom door and finds the room empty she's not surprised and she's certainly not scared the child went to the party made your nose there's nothing for it but to go to the Frat bash herself and soon everyone learns that to paraphrase Franklin D Roosevelt there is nothing to fear but media herself positive elements if you're familiar with Tyler Perry's media character you know she's no role model but if folks listen to what she said more often while ignoring nearly everything she does they might be better for it media believe that folks should be strong self-reliant unfailingly courteous to old people and she'll try to instill those traits in those around her even if she has to beat them to the point of death to do it in buo AIA Halloween she Hade and Bam encouraged Tiffany to recant of her whining teenage ways she also Spurs Brian to act more like a dad Brian admits that his R parents should be their kids friends media has no respect for such nonsense kids don't need their parents to be friends she says they need parents and that means that parents sometimes have to put their foot down and Dole out punishment sometimes harsh punishment if need be spoiler warning media and Co then turn on the still disobedient Tiffany pulling clothes out of her closet and telling her that if she's not going to obey her CPS she might as well be on her way they tell her that everything she owns was pretty much paid for by Brian and thus not really hers Brian joins in the packing reinforcing the well-worn notion that if Tiffany's going to live in Dad's house she'll have to to listen and obey the dad who pays for it while folks might quibble with a threat of throwing a 17-year-old girl out on the street the lesson underneath this demonstration of tough love is a valuable one media also tells Tiffany it's important to cut her parents some slack too they are not God she says they're parents and thus prone to mistakes of their own spiritual elements a day Tiffany's friend is a pastor's kid she talks about how her family doesn't typically celebrate Halloween but they do have a celebration over at the church last year she says she dressed up as the Holy Ghost apparent zombies Chase Media into a church where she meets a day's Mom and Dad help me Jesus Mia shouts repeatedly as she barrels down the aisle a day's Mother tells media that she'll be fine if she just accepts Jesus into her heart as Savior and confesses her sin M agrees to the first part but declines the confession aspect of salvation for now she doesn't think that the congregants or perhaps even the walls of the church itself would be able to deal with hearing all of her sins she does wind up getting saved but when she hears that the zombies outside were actually frat members she immediately starts backsliding Mia longs to curse inside the church and shouts cursing demon I bind you she plots her revenge against the Frat and when the pastor reminds her about jesus' command to turn the other cheek Mia says she aims to kick some cheeks Jesus didn't have in mind she finally leaves the church and the frustrated Pastor saying that some times salvation just doesn't take we hear many references to God Jesus and church Aunt bam hadie media and others often implore God for help with bam suggesting several times that a little prayer wouldn't go a Miss especially when they're all being attacked by Supernatural entities a Jacko Lantern outside Bam's house is carved with my heart Jesus though media wonders why bam is giving candy to heathens media claims she had all the lights on in her bedroom because she was reading the Bible when asked where that Bible is she says on the table in my heart there are references to demons and Devils too Tiffany trots out a game designed to contact the dead obviously a knockoff Ouija board which M insists should be put away immediately keep playing with the devil she tells Tiffany he going to show up she also talks about how Voodoo was everywhere in her hometown of New Orleans Brian doesn't want Tiffany to go to the party for obvious reasons those boys wants just one thing he tells Tiffany when her younger brother asks what that is Brian lies saying to pay their student lines Tiffany doesn't care she wants to keep Pace with a couple of popular risque friends who wear crop tops that show as a day says what the good lord gave them a day goes to the party dressed fairly modestly but the other three do not wearing outfits that display lots of cleavage and leg one of the girls Lee wears a Fong over some rear embracing leggings and she spends a good portion of the party that we see at least twerking and giggling as she waves gives her backside to the camera guys Usher a day and Tiffany into private bedrooms with a suggestion that they'll be able to get more intimate there the couples never kiss or make physical contact when the frat brothers learn that both are just 17 they recoil in horror and kick the kids out of the party their friends Lee and Rain lie about their ages Mia exposes her breast to frat brothers though her shirt hides them from the camera and encourages them to touch them they do and when they realize they're real the young men are horrified media makes references to her younger days when she was a stripper when she begins dancing against her will to the music she says it's her inner coming out rain and Lee dance sultrily together for a second or two in the background Joe makes references some with gestures to masturbation prostitution group sex and oral sex people ugle each other and make crude comments on how they'd like to see various bits uncovered revelers wear revealing outfits criminals being taken to prison crudely come on to same sex characters much to those characters discomfort Tyler Perry Mia's Creator plays media himself of course there are a few winking references to how manlike media is Joe for instance suggests that media may actually have a prostate hidden somewhere under the dress violent content a body is found in the Frat House its throat sliced open and blood dribbling down the front there's a huge frackers on a bus where several people fight when it comes to scary situations Mia fight or flight reflexes are predominantly set on fight she punches apparently evil clowns in the face Joe knocks one out with a cane she hits a frat gu to as well both Mia and Joe regularly lured the effectiveness of corporal punishment encouraging Brian to beat some sense into his daughter Aunt bam and Hattie also affirmed physical violence against waywood kids they remind Brian that they often gave him love Taps and that they never Hur him Brian remembers some of those Taps a bit differently they recall the time when Mia beat him so badly that it necessitated a trip to the emergency room but she adds I'd at least take you to the hospital Joe Brian's father would do No Such Thing One Day Joe apparently pushed Brian off a roof and somehow his scrotum got skewered by a pencil Brian reminds his Elders that this is a different time that people can be arrested for those supposed love Taps these days but later He suggests he's willing to go to jail if launching into a little corporal punishment would help his daughter crew rude or profane language we hear about 20 uses of the sww and four or five of the nword Brian scolds Joe for using that sort of language in Brian's house God's name is misused once while Lord is used a half dozen times in contexts that could be heard either as profane exclamations or spontaneous prayers milder profanities are hurled with the sort of rapidity one would expect from a particularly profane Gatlin gun H is used upwards of 120 times and DN another 75 times we also hear a PSS and bch drug and alcohol content Joe and Bam both use marijuana complaining when various apparent Ghoulies interrupt their High Joe is Shan smoking a joint whenever someone discusses or questions Bam's pot habit she reaches inside her dress and whips out her medicinal marijuana card she brandishes it in front of police officers bragging that she's completely legal she also complains about getting the munches police find Mar Marana in the Frat House media and others light and smoke cigarettes other negative elements Bam's bathroom habits are a source of conversation media reminds her that she wets herself a little when she gets scared prompting bam who was startled in her front yard to walk into her home to change her underwear but later she complains of her inability to urinate more than just a couple of drops at a time when she learns that Brian's own privates had a literal runin with a pencil she suggests with a giggle that he must have a more difficult time than than she does frat guys apparently vomit after touching Mia's breasts Aunt bam steals candy from trick or treaties Tiffany spends a lot of the movie talking back disrespecting and disobeying her father conclusion harm media love her or hate her there's no one quite like her I think a lot of people like media for the same reason that people like old west Gunslingers or shoot first detectives media represents a kind of No Nonsense take no prisoners Justice she'll get folks to act right even if she has to beat them to do it but the very thing that makes her attractive also makes her and her movies so problematic media demands respect but she doesn't give it she believes that the golden rule that doing unto others is a great thing as long as it's others that are doing it now I know that Mia herself would never hold herself up as a role model she's a comic character oversized and exaggerated in every way we're not supposed to view her as a blameless saint but just because we know who she is doesn't excuse all that she and her cohorts do all that cursing sexual inuendo and drug use doesn't disappear just because we're not supposed to take it seriously P eating it up the Frat characters were so cliched their performances came off as cringeworthy overall this was a fun silly horror comedy which was light on the horror and bogged down by some cliche family stuff but was elevated by its performances
