Hot weather brings feels-like temperatures above 100 to Philadelphia area; PM storms on the way

IT'S A NEXT WEATHER ALERT DAY DUE TO EXTREME HEAT AND THE THREAT OF SYMPTOMS. >> Jan: METEOROLOGIST GRANT GILMORE IS IN FOR KATE BILO IN OUR STUDIO THIS MORNING. >> Grant: IT'S ONE OF THOSE DAYS WHEN YOU GOT TO START THINKING ALL RIGHT, PRESERVE THE BODY. PRESERVE YOUR HEALTH. AND JUST THE LITTLE THINGS THAT YOU DO NOW AND THROUGH THE FIRST PART OF THE DAY IS REALLY GOING TO HELP YOU OUT TOWARDS THE BACK OF THE END OF THE DAY. ONCE THAT SUNSHINE BEGINS TO RISE AND ONCE WE START TO SEE THOSE TEMPERATURES CLIMB, THERE'S REALLY NO TURNING BACK UNTIL PROBABLY AROUND 5, 6 O'CLOCK. NO BEATING ALL THIS HEAT OUT THERE. NEXT WEATHER ALERT TODAY. EXCESSIVE HEAT. THAT'S KIND OF SOMETHING WE SAY A LOT BUT I THINK WE NEED TO REALLY FO FOCUS IN ON WHAT THAT MEANS. IT'S HOTTER THAN NORMAL. OUR BODIES WILL HAVE A HARD TIME REALLY COOLING DOWN WHEN THE TEMPERATURES GET AS HOT AS THEY'RE GOING TO BE. ON TOP OF THAT, ALL OF THAT HEAT AND HUMIDITY IS GOING TO FEEL SOME STRONG -- FUEL STRONGER STORMS LATER THIS AFTERNOON ITS A QUESTION WHETHER OR NOT THEY'RE GOING TO BE SEVERE. THEY'RE PROBABLY IMPACT A GOOD BIT OF YOU. THE HEAT REALLY IS AN ISSUE BETWEEN 11 O'CLOCK THIS MORNING UNTIL AROUND 8 O'CLOCK THIS EVENING AND THEN THE STORMS START TO FIRE UP BETWEEN 6 O'CLOCK AND THEN AROUND MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. I WANT TO FOCUS ON THE FEELS-LIKE TEMPERATURES. WHEN YOU STEP OUT THE DOOR THIS MORNING IT FEELS FINE. IT'S DARK STILL, TOO, SO THE COMBINATION OF THE BUILDING HEAT AND THAT INTENSE SUNSHINE IS REALLY WHAT'S GOING TO HIT US HARD LATER TODAY. FEELS-LIKE TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 100 AND UPWARDS AND 107 DEGREES IN SOME PLACES AND THAT'S UNTIL AROUND 6 O'CLOCK. 6 O'CLOCK EVENING THROUGH THE EVENING COMMUTE, GET HOME WITH THE KIDS AND THE FAMILY, DINNERTIME STILL FEELING LIKE THE TRIPLE DIGITS. IT WON'T BE UNTIL SOME OF THE RAIN COMES IN THAT WE'LL START TO COOL OFF A LITTLE BIT AND IN FACT ACTUALLY THE COOLDOWN ON THE BACK END OF THIS SYSTEM DOES LOOK PRETTY GOOD. AGAIN, STARTING THIS MORNING TEMPERATURES ARE ABOUT 10 DEGREES WARMER THAN THIS TIME YESTERDAY. WE'RE RIGHT THERE IN THE LOW TO MID 70s. DOWN THE SHORE RIGHT NOW YOU HEAD ACROSS SOUTH JERSEY, RIGHT THERE IN THE LOW 70s AS WELL. DELAWARE VALLEY THROUGH THE I-95, 73 DEGREES. LEHIGH VALLEY YOU'RE ABOUT THE SAME RANGE IN THE LOW AND MID 70s. ONCE THAT SUN COMES UP, A LITTLE BEFORE 6:30, THAT'S WHEN EVERYTHING BEGINS TO CHANGE. IT'S GOING TO CHANGE QUICKLY. EVEN PLACES LIKE BETHLEHEM THIS MORNING WHERE WE'RE STARTING OFF WHERE EVERYTHING IS CALM OBVIOUSLY DARK OUT THERE BUT THAT WARM AND HUMID FLOW COMING IN OUT OF THE SOUTH AND WEST OUT AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT ON THE NORTHEASTERN SIDE OF THAT HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM IS WHAT'S DRIVING THIS NEXT WEATHER ALERT TODAY. TWOFOLD, RIGHT. THERE'S THAT HIGH IN THE MID TO UPPER 90s. ALL OF THAT INSTABILITY OUT AHEAD OF THAT COLD FRONT IS WHAT'S GOING TO FUEL THESE SHOWERS AND STORMS. NOTICE THE TIME STAMP. AROUND 6, 7, 8 O'CLOCK, THAT'S THE LATEST ON OUR FORECAST MODEL, THAT'S THE CURRENT THINKING ON OUR TIMING. THAT THREAT FOR SEVERE WEATHER WILL PUSH TO THE SOUTH AS WE GO THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF THE OVERNIGHT. WE COULD STILL SEE SOME TRAILING SHOWERS THROUGH THIS TIME TOMORROW MORNING BUT I THINK IN THE RANGE OF EARLY TOMORROW MORNING WOULD BE RELATIVELY BENIGN. COOLER TEMPERATURES. HAVE A LOOK AT THE NEXT WEATHER SEVEN-DAY FORECAST BECAUSE WE'LL SEE SOME ON AND OFF SHOWERS TOMORROW MORNING. MAYBE EVEN SOME MORE RAIN GOING INTO FRIDAY BUT RELATIVELY ISOLATED. LOOK AT THOSE TEMPERATURES, UPPER 70s AND THEN INTO THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN THE 80s WITH THE BEST DAY RIGHT
