We're at Peak Hurricane Season, So Why So Few Named Storms?

the next four minutes is all about hurricanes we're going to talk typhoons as well and the impact it has on our Canadian weather first welcome to the show meteorologist Rhythm Reed we're going to dive into Atlantic Canada hurricane season you know this week is a special week because usually this is when we see the peak of the hurricane season the most action the biggest weather headlines but that really hasn't been the case this year absolutely Rachel when we're taking a look at some of this what's going on in the at antic we just have one system that has the potential of becoming a tropical name storm in the next two days and that would be Francine when we take a look at our list and that will be number six so fairly quiet across Atlantic Canada now you know sometimes in previous years by this point of the year we've almost gone through the entire alphabet why have we been so quiet this year what's lacking when it comes to these name storms well we've talked so much about those warmer sea surface temperatures that was was going to be the Catalyst for a lot of these storms but what ends up happening is that yes we need all of this convection to rise and those upper levels need to be cool enough to sustain those uh hurricanes or tropical storms we've had those warmer sea surface temperatures but also the temperatures a loft have been warm so they have struggled to really hold on to anything very strong even though we did have Barrel get up to a category 5 early in the season and you know sometimes it only does take one Category 5 storm to make the season very impactful and we certainly have been seeing a very impactful season in East Asia now they don't call them hurricanes they call them typhoons which actually is exactly the same thing and sometimes these big storms these typhoons even though they're happening let's say in Vietnam or in China they can impact our weather here in Canada so let's talk about typhoon yagi and what it will be doing in our backyard kind of well let's take a look at what happened with Yi it was what is equivalent to a category 4 hurricane when it made landfall in Hong Kong and it made its second landfall early this morning in Northern Vietnam with strong winds upwards of what is category 4 they will diminish over the next 24 hours but with it strong storm surge as well as damaging winds are still expected for the Northern end of Vietnam now as we look at this heavy rainfall Vietnam we think how could this impact our forecast in Canada but the way that this energy will move around the globe it will play a factor in our Jet Stream So Rhythm I would love it if you could break that down for our audience absolutely Rachel very well put as well the jet stream is what's going to be really helping us to get a grasp of what's going on in midep and yes yagi does have a little bit of an impact what we're seeing is that troughing in western Canada will bring cooler below seasonal temperatures there so we are looking at below seasonal temperatures and also weather conditions but Eastern Canada so Southern Ontario Quebec and even Atlantic Canada that's where we're going to be looking at those Midsummer like temperatures ridging building into place is going to usher in well more sunny conditions for an extended period of time across the East but in the west those temperatures will be taking a little bit of a nose dive making it feel closer to Autumn rather than what would be considered summer or early summer or late summer across the West it's really interesting how that energy from literally the other side of the globe can impact our forecast and Rhythm you've created this great graphic to show the audience weather into next weekend and some of those temperatures next Saturday so let's break that down those temperatures are really going to show you those two halves of the country across western Canada you're looking at 19 degrees for Calgary very seasonal some even falling below seasonal take a look in the East above seasonal temperatures making it almost feel like Midsummer okay whether you like this kind of weather or not whether these temperatures are in your favor you can all thank typhoon yagi for this one
