Tennessee Titans Roster Predictions: Life on the EDGE, Keeping SIX Backers & Secondary Depth Issues

part two of my final 53 man roster predictions on yesterday show we took a look at the offensive side of the ball I had 24 players making the roster there now we're going to flip to the defensive side of the ball and special teams and I'll get us to 53 we're going to talk about the edge where I think the Titans aren't done adding to the roster at the position then we'll talk about the middle of the defense the interior defensive line in the linebacker spot and why there are so many good linebackers on this team and then finally we'll look at the secondary where I think the depth is very much that being said make sure that you throw a thumbs up on the video throw a Tighten Up Down in the chat let's talk about the edge group so talking about who's going to make the roster for me it was difficult because I don't know if the Titans have more than four Edge rushers that I would feel comfortable saying need to make the roster we have the top two and Harold Landry and ardan key although you guys know I've talked about Ardon key and I think that Ardon key is more of a rotational player than he is a true starter but he definitely is the second best Edge rusher that the Titans have and then of course you have Jaylen harrold Rashad Weaver Shane Ray Caleb Murphy Thomas rush and khed Duke all right so to me outside of the top two who are locks to make the team you go after I think that Rashad Weaver is going to make the team now I don't think that Rashad Weaver has progressed in the way that I had hoped I had high hopes for Rashad Weaver I really did after that five and a half sack season I thought okay I didn't expect Rashad Weaver to maybe be a fantastic starter but maybe he could be a low-end starter for the Titans at minimum be a good rotational pass rusher and I just don't know I don't know if Weaver is there now I think he's good enough for the Titans to keep him on the team I don't think we're really in any kind of um risk of I wouldn't even call it risk because you know it's not that big of a deal but I don't think that we're looking at Rashad Weaver not making this team I think Weaver is going to make this team and then right with him I think jayen Harold is an absolute lock to make this team the rookie seventh rounder out of Michigan has been incredibly impressive he had two sacks had three pressures in the game against the Seahawks he has impressed the coaching staff I mean Brian Callahan called him a strong rotational player like there is a good chance that Jaylen harrold is Edge number three on this team over Rashad Weaver I I feel actually pretty confident saying that that will be the case by midseason if it's not the case already I think Jaylen Herold may already be a better player than Rashad Weaver but I think those four players are going to make this team really the question is would the Titans keep a fifth Edge rusher out of Shane Ray Caleb Murphy I don't think uh khed duke or Thomas Rush are making this team I think you can kind of do I'd like to have on practice squad but I don't think either of them have a chance to make this team to me it's down to Shane Ray Caleb Murphy I don't think the Titans keep six Edge rushers I don't think that's happening no matter what so would they keep five you know this goes back to Brian Callahan's comments earlier this week that they're not just going to check the box and just have a number of guys at this position because that's what you should do they're looking to keep the best 53 players and I just don't know that Shane Ray or Caleb Murphy are that this has continued to be a position at Edge where I think the Titans need to add somebody Titans need to add a free agent now that could be in a couple of different ways I've mentioned names like Charles Harris or Shaq Lawson as options for the Titans but maybe what the Titans want to do with this position is not necessarily add somebody who's in veteran free agency right now but but they could be looking to take somebody off someone else's roster I know that some people hear that and they're like oh they're going to take somebody else's trash but the reality is that some teams have more Talent at certain positions then they can keep all right that's not the case for the Titans at Edge the Titans don't have so many Edge rushers that they got to cut a good player but that's probably the case at wide receiver like if the Titans cut Kyle Phillips or cut Karis Jackson those players probably get picked up by somebody else especially Kyle Phillips like somebody will probably say hey we don't have six good wide receivers or six wide receivers that we like let's bring in Kyle Phillips I think Kyle Phillips would get picked up by another team on their 53 man roster if the Titans cut him which I think is what happens based on what I said yesterday in my offensive roster prediction so there could be teams out there that are strong at Edge that have to let go of a good player and then the Titans can add that player and that can be their fifth Edge rusher that they keep rather than Shane Ray or Caleb Murphy you know what I mean so for me personally for my predictions without knowing that that's gonna happen I do have the Titans keeping Shane Ray as their fifth Edge rusher putting Caleb Murphy and khed Duke on the practice squad that's what I have them doing but again this is a position where I wouldn't be surprised if Shane Ray got cut the Titans only kept four that they have right now and then they add their fifth rusher in a different way that something that's going to keep coming up as we go through here because I think a lot of these positions on defense the Titans could stand to add someone else you know what I mean so that's what I'm looking for that's life on the edge I think the Titans do need to add another body there I don't know that Shane Ray or Caleb Murphy are guys that you want to keep on the roster anyway so we'll be interesting to see how they operate there but linebacker interior defensive line a lot of question marks there especially on the interior defensive line where I think Titans could look at that like they do Edge and I mean in the secondary the last few spots definitely definitely not certain about who should take those so we're going to go over that that's five Edge rushers though as we continue to build our way to 53 so 24 on offense five Edge we're to let's talk about the interior and we'll start at linebacker I don't think the Titans can afford to get rid of any of their linebackers I think that the Titans have a somehow the Titans have a good little group of Developmental linebackers right now I may not feel great about the starting linebackers for the Titans and Jack Gibbons and Kenneth Murray like I don't think the Titans have a I think linebacker is one of the struggle spots on this roster but all the young guys that can develop Otis Reese Cedric gray James Williams like that's a solid Trio of young linebackers that the Titans can develop and again I have said that roster building wise I don't want to spend a lot of money at off ball linebacker if I'm on defense and I'm spending money I want to spend it on pass rush and secondary off ball linebacker inside linebacker is kind of like running back or tight end in my opinion it's just not a position I want to spend a lot of resources at okay so having that I is good you got those young three guys and that's why I got to keep six linebackers for the Titans it seems like a lot I know but I'm keeping six I'm keeping Kenneth Murray and Jack Gibbons obviously they're locks they're the starters I'm keeping chance Campbell as well as the primary backup linebacker a guy you could trust all right OD Reese Cedric gray James Williams I am obviously keeping those guys now that leaves Garrett wallow out for the season finally placed on injured reserve Luke gford has been banged up a little bit and been at the end of the depth chart a guy that was signed last year more of a special teams player than a linebacker though JoJo doen also got hurt earlier this year the Titans actually brought in a new linebacker Mel Jones um after they officially put Garrett wallow on injured reserve but I don't think that Mel Jones is going to make the team he's a body to get them through these you know last week of practice somebody's got to play they played chance Campbell all game long in basically both the preseason games so far they probably want to get him out of there and let somebody else take those reps and I think Mel Jones is the guy who will be doing that but I think the Titans keep six linebackers here is where things get a little interesting and it's kind of like what we were talking about at Edge but just with a little different touch on it so I was talking to one of my friends in the Titans Community he's also a content creator uh will Lis from titanized and we were kind of just talking about our 53 man roster projections and uh who we think makes it he sent me his list and we were talking about mine and why we disagree at certain spots shout out to you will always good conversation um but he made a great point that what the Titans may do at inside linebacker because Cedric gray has been hurt he's been out with a shoulder injury and we don't know if he's going to return this week we don't know if he's going to be able to play in the final preseason game and a lot of time what happens is in these situations is the team will put a player on injured reserve but they have to do it after the 53 man roster is set okay so what if you put a guy on injured reserve before the season starts There Are Rules out there where you can't bring all those guys back okay it's not like in the regular season where you put a guy on ir and you could bring him back after 3 weeks after four weeks you know what I mean now there's a limit on that now uh the NFL changed the rules a little bit recently there is a limit but there are still I think the old locked on NFL around the around the NFL podcast which is dead now rip uh but they claim the term Bo IR Boomerang like you have a number of guys that you could place on ir and bring them back but in the preseason those rules are different and often the guys that get put on IR before the regular season before the 53 man roster set those guys don't come back so if the Titans think that Cedric gray is still going to be out a while with his shoulder injury what they could do is they could put him on the 53 man roster but then immediately Place him on injured reserve which would then open a roster spot on the 53 band roster which they could bring back somebody that they already cut or they could bring back somebody at a different position from a different team like we talked about with Edge like the Titans could get a guy who was cut by a different team who had a Surplus at a certain position so that could be a place where it makes the roster rules funky even though Cedric gray did make the team they would immediately Place him on ir and then they would add somebody else at either linebacker or a different position I think it would be a different position probably but that is a possibility that I want to at least mention but since I don't know again good credit to will good idea there on on how the order of operations could work but since I don't know that that's going to happen for sure I'm just going to say the Titans keep six linebackers the six guys who I think will stay with the team Kenneth Murray Jack Gibbons chance Campbell Otis ree Cedric gray James Williams so that's six so we had five Edge six linebackers that's 11 guys we got 26 spots on defense all right so we filled 11 of them moving to the interior defensive line again I go back to the quote that Brian Callahan said we're not just checking boxes with numbers here going to keep the best players on the team and I just I have said it all summer long I've said it all training camp long I've said it all preseason long I do not like the interior defensive line depth for the Titans I do not so you got Jeff you got sweat you got Sebastian Joseph de I think they are locks Keandre Coburn who's also a nose tackle he's the direct backup to dandre sweat I think the Titans keep Keandre Coburn not only did he have a good preseason but he could be a babysitter for tandre s he could be a mentor if you like that term better they played together at Texas you got Jeffrey Simmons locker sweat's locker Coburn's Locker so those two veteran guys are right next to him Coburn was uh tandre sweats big at Texas like his older brother his big brother in the football program so you have Coburn who's proved that he's good enough to make the roster this preseason I give him credit there and then you have sweat as your two nose tackles and then you got Jeff and you got Sebastian Joseph day which means that your next interior defensive lineman has to be someone with a little bit of Versatility who could play the three technique behind Jeffrey Simmons but also kick out and play a little defensive end in the Titans base fiveman set which is what Sebastian Joseph day has been doing in the limited amount that we've seen him in the preseason so I'm Gonna Keep TK McLendon all right I'm Gonna Keep TK Mendon who can be that versatile guy and do both of those now that means I'm cutting Isaiah Eon the rookie out of Penn State put him on the practice squad go really would like him on the practice squad I'm gonna cut Abdullah he was just added when the Titans put Marlin Davidson on IR that's a camp body Quinton bohanna is the guy who if the Titans keep six interior defensive linemen that are currently on the roster Quinton bohanna would be the guy who would be added who I'm cutting but again I don't like the interior defensive line for the Titans I think even a guy like TK McLendon could be cut and the Titans could add somebody from someone else's Cuts so I think that there could be like perfect example there could be a sixth interior defensive lineman so the Titans have a direct backup at every spot on the IDL and then Cedric gray placed on IR so I say six linebackers with Cedric gray and five interior defensive linemen but the Titans could ultimately put Cedric gray on IR leaving only five linebackers and then use his spot to add a sixth interior defensive lineman from another team which I think is a possibility of happen because I want the Titans to churn a little bit there so that's what could happen but for right now my official predictions six linebackers five interior defensive linemen Jeff sweat Sebastian Joseph day Keandre Coburn TK McLendon really hope the Titans do prove me wrong and add something else there though but we got to talk about the secondary where the Titans look good in the front four spots but after that things get awfully hairy before we get into it though do want to let you guys know that today's episode is into the secondary we'll start at cornerback the top four is easy right Sneed Cheeto Roger Jarvis brownley Jr simple plain easy flat out no questions okay so that simple but after that what do you do and I am a firm believer that you need at least five cornerbacks you got to have five cornerbacks I honestly I would lean towards six cornerbacks if I could have my perfect roster but the Titans don't have six players worth keeping so if you have the front four of sne Cheeto Roger jbj who is the fifth all right I'm curious to hear what you guys have to say down below my pick my pick would be be Gabe Judy Loi I think Gabe Judy Lo's had a good training camp we've heard good reports he's an undrafted free agent rookie so there's potential there you can develop him but here's the reality every opportunity this off season Trey Avery has played over Gabe Judy ly when the Titans are in the first team defense and they don't have sne and they don't have Cheeto out there which has been the case for most of training camp it's Trey Avery so at some point you would think that the Titans would put Gabe Judy Loy out there over Trey Avery but they haven't so I hope that Gabe Judy ly gets the fifth spot but my prediction is gonna be Trey Avery and I know that he's been getting cooked and I know that a lot of people out there don't think he's very good and I'm not going to argue with you about that but I think that the team and the coaching staff likes Trey Avery a lot more than we all do all right so just got to keep that in mind but I'm going to go with the five cornerbacks again sne Cheeto Roger jbj and then finally I'll give the fifth spot to Trey Avery I think that Gabe Judy Loy goes to practice squad I think that Eric gor goes to practice squad that way you have an outside corner and an inside corner on practice squad Robert Javier Tay gwin Caleb Farley of course and then Anthony Kendall I think all get cut so that's where I'm at on that maybe Kendall comes back on the practice Squad I don't know I don't know he's been banged up he's been injured so who knows if that's even possible or what they're looking at but five corners there so five spots left I'm going to safety all right you have the top four that we know ammani hooker quandre Diggs Jamal Adams Elijah molden that's your top four feel comfortable with that but again I want to have a fifth safety for special teams purposes I want to have a guy who's a key member of special teams unit and when you're looking at who remains you have Mike Brown you have Shai Carter you have Matt Jackson you have Keat Ellis the undrafted free agent rookie I know that most people in this position would take Matt Jackson he's made some Splash plays in Camp like some interceptions people have heard his name he's a young guy and I think Matt Jackson's in his second year I think he was an undrafted free agent last year um but here's the reality Mike Brown has played over Matt Jackson all offseason long and any opportunity that we got to see the team Mike Brown has played over him I think that Mike Brown might even be better than Elijah Molen Mike Brown is an underrated player he can also be a dime backer he's also good on special teams he can be the personal protector on punt I think that Mike Brown is a guy Mike Brown is one of the most underrated players players on the roster not in terms of he's so good and people don't see it but in terms of he's solid and Titans fans don't talk about him at all okay Mike Brown I think is the fifth safety who makes this team so six inside linebackers five interior defensive linemen five Edge rushers five cornerbacks five safeties that's 26 players on defense to go with the 24 players on offense that makes 50 and then the final three spots Ryan Stonehouse at punter Nick Folk at kicker Morgan Cox at Long Snapper that's 53 so curious to hear your guys' 53 man if you want to do a full roster prediction in the comments or hit me up on Twitter great example of there are some fans out there who will tell you why even discuss this stuff you're not in the building you have no control you know the team doesn't listen to you blah blah blah but like this is a perfect example of this is what being a football fan is all about like this is fun right like having these discussions disagreements about whether to keep five linebackers and six interior defensive linemen or seven wide receivers four tight ends Malik Willis is a third QB having these discussions among ourselves and sharing a passion and sharing an interest in this football team that that is what it's all about that's why I enjoy football so much the game itself is fantastic I love the game of football but I also love all the discussion and all the camaraderie and all of just all of the conversation that comes along with being a football fan so never let people tell you that you know you shouldn't be discussing these things this is is exactly what we should be discussing and this is why the NFL is so popular because people love to talk about it in their free time so anyways with that being said I'll get off my soap box but uh yeah that's 53 let's see what really happens next Tuesday the cuts happen and I'll be here on Tuesday night to break down everything that happened and talked about how right or how wrong I was so can't wait for that can't wait for
