12 Arkansas here today people across the state are hearing him he's part of their memories of Nebraska sports it's synonymous hearing his voice with Husker baseball and football it's an Immaculate in the game for years we've gone to the games and that has looked different um as the girls have gotten older you can catch me most games with an airod in my ear I love listening to my dad guys he's in t Nebraska and the Huskers have come all the way back and they have the lead [Music] Greg is the dad he's in charge of everything he oversees everything he wants to take care of everybody he doesn't want to be a burden and he uh doesn't want to ask for help now here's our opportunity to take care of him what can we do to help you through this because of everything you done for us 10 days before Christmas came home from a sports Island I told Amy I said W my shoulders bother me I must have slept on it funny the night before and I put some Icy Hot on it and she's like what are you doing I'm like well just just kind of bother me I complained about how it smelled so bad that night I think I made some comment to him he tells people about it still today like well you were making fun of me for you know wearing Icy Hot and now we wish we could you know have it be about Icy Hot end of February he went and had an MRI they found the tumor tumors don't start in shoulders they start somewhere else that led to the full body scan in late March early April and then they found various tumors in the pancreas in the liver and the lung the worst fear was pancreatic because that's the hardest one for doctors to get a handle on there's only one tumor there but it's at the worst spot of the pancreas it's not good probably less than 50% of people who have pancreatic cancer don't survive more than 3 months so I'm on borrow time we've been able to have chemo and he's had radiation on his arm it's an effort to extend your life and to give you a better life that's all you can ask for at that point in time I knew I needed to do whatever the doctor said baseball was going to have to be put on the back burner and that's when I made the decision I needed to go public bottom line is I have been diagnosed with cancer found out well week or two ago treatment will be necessary and so it's going to disrupt my work I knew how bad he wanted to be where I was calling baseball um sorry uh it was a it was a difficult moment to process just the reality of it we wanted to find any way we could to be able to help him continue on and and being a part of the show and and what that looks like now as he's got a setup at his home here we are hump day edition of sports alley on the Huskers radio network folks you're you're halfway to another summertime weekend which we're clicking them off the calendar because after this weekend only one more free Saturday before we all gather together at Memorial Stadium for the Oscars opener against the miners from UT welcome to the program tonight we're delighted that You' chosen what has been really probably he would say overwhelming but also just really helpful for him is the way that hosker nation has responded to the news and wanting to support him the outpouring of support I did not anticipate that spurred me on it really has my wife's been amazing without her I don't I don't know that we would be talking today my daughters have been great work has been phenomenal people like Jessica and Ben I thank them but that's that's not enough they deserve more they deserve more than that but boy you're catching me here thank you to all those people across the state who have sent letters and I know the prayers are there I can feel them I can't see them but I can tell they're there and they're there pulling for me and that means a lot [Music] lots of cards and letters from other people but these are kind of some of the bigger items that I've received over the last couple months back in April I get this odd-shaped box into our studio and open it up and my gosh it was a row the booat paddle from PJ Fleck in Minnesota what a cool gesture from coach I've interviewed him a couple of times in media days I've seen him really light up with this not attention but with this just honor of knowing that he was really truly appreciated there are a lot of people who not question but wonder how we just keep going uh we have three girls and we've had some big life events happen this summer a normal day is him being a part of that hey girl how you doing hi how's your day good Jeffy good I did my homework I moved our daughter to Florida last week he obviously couldn't be a part of it and I know that was hard on him met this girl who just moved here from Nebraska wow and she was like oh we're big Husker fans and she said we're going to have to grill out and watch hker games together perfect good for you he's always there to help those girls they are his world I think the coolest thing is he gets to meet all the people and then I get to hear all the stories so I feel like I can talk a lot of football with my friends and your teachers oh yeah yeah I can kind of sneak into the booth sit with my dad um and I'm totally okay with that I have to be kind of I have to be quiet sitting behind him watching him and Ben call the games I'm very content [Music] there I can't say enough about Ben mlin and Coach bolt remarkable the team and I think so many people saw what they did we had some patches put on the side of our hats just said sharp strong we just wanted to honor him we wanted to have a reminder each and every day of of why we were going out there and playing and getting him to understand how much he really means to us the first night they wore that hat check sorry Jackson Brockett throws a no hitter she playing in a Miss Jackson bracket has the first n ining no hitter for the Nebraska Corn Huskers since [Applause] 1954 [Music] man the Big 10 tournaments played in Downtown Omaha Charles Schwab field they had lost their first game and they had to do something nobody's ever done before which was win five consecutive games in three days to to be the champion I was able to call two of those five that made it special too that team had a fight about him the spirit about him and that's why you hang a banner really grateful that I was there for it breaking ball that's Loop to left field Gabe Swanson is there he squeezes it and your Huskers are big 10 champions for the first time 620 the [Music] league he had tears in his eyes and you could tell how much it meant to him that he had been there for that it's good for me to wake up in the morning to know that I got to prep I got to do a chart I got to do an interview today whatever it is it gives me a little bit extra fight I I'm not going to sit around and pout that's not a great way to end life I'm going to live it to the fullest each day I set that goal of being ready for August 31st August 31st Nebraska opens the 20 24th season against UTEP at Memorial Stadium he loves this football team he's excited about what could be with this football team he wants to be a part of it no matter what he's going through he wants to continue to do what he loves this is the love of his life his family's pretty high up there too but I'm not going to lie it's really close he has bled R right along with everyone else in this nation and we'll continue to do that until he has called his last call it's all I know it's been part of my life all of my life I've told people all summer don't bet against me I'll be in that booth on the 31st
