VINTAGE NASCAR OWNERS: Wood Brothers Racing

hello everyone and welcome to this edition of vintage NASCAR owners Wood Brothers Racing legendary Nascar Cup Series team Wood Brothers Racing originally began their race team in 1950 when Glenn wood decided to give the sport a try at nearby Mo speedway near Stewart Virginia the team would run modifi sometimes as well as making their first Nascar Cup Series start in 1953 at Martinville Speedway in the late s the team also made starts in the old NASCAR convertible Series in 1958 Glenn wood qualified on the poll in the Cup Series race at Martinsville now they ran the number 21 Fords that they still run today clear back then it was really impressive before long wood would stopped driving and just focus on owning the team and working on Race Cars he won four races for the team before giving up driving the team also were the first ones to perfect the modern day pit stops several drivers spent time behind the wheel of one of wood brother racing team's race cars and won between the years of 1950 and 1971 Curtis Turner won once Marvin panch won eight times AJ F won three times tiny lond won the 1963 Daytona 500 while serving as a filler driver for the team Speedy Thompson won twice and kale Arbor found Victory Lane 13 times since the team was a self self-owned team and it it was a time before major sponsorship you know was a factor and all so the team would not run the full schedule instead they would focus on races with large purses and that would made Financial sense also during the 1960s the Wood Brothers ran a second team car the number 121 in some races Formula 1 and Indie Car Star Dan gurnie was hired to drive than the car at road course events he and the team went on to win in all five starts gurnie would make for the team all the victories came at Riverside surprisingly in 1965 the team was so quick when it came to pit stops Lotus owner Colin Chapman hired the Wood Brothers to serve as the team's pick crew they went on to win the race with Jim Clark driving in Indianapolis 500 that's pretty incredible also they signed pure later to be the team's primary sponsor a deal that would last almost 20 seasons for the 1971 Nascar Cup series season Donnie Allison made 11 starts in the number 21 Mercury his best start was first five times at both Talladega races Martinville and Darlington in the spring and then Daytona in the summer his best finish was first to Talladega in the spring overall he scored five polls one win seven top fives and eight top 10 with RJ Reynolds entering the sport as a series new sponsor in 1972 the schedule dropped from around 50 races this season down to around 30 races of season open wheel Legend AJ F returned to the team making the first four races and last ra race of the season for a total of five starts in the number 21 Mercury his best start was first three times at Riverside in Ontario in the spring then Texas World Speedway in the fall his best finish was first twice the Daytona 500 and Ontario in the spring overall he scored three polls two wins four top fives and four top 10 David Pearson also made 14 starts in the number 21 Mercury his best start was first four times at Darlington in the spring Atlanta in the summer and then Charlotte and Rockingham in the fall his best finish was first six times at both Michigan races Darlington and Talladega the spring then Dayton in the summer and over in the fall overall in 14 starts he scored four polls six wins 11 top fives and 11 top 10 in 1973 David Pearson returned to the number 21 pure ligher Mercury to make 18 Nascar Cup Series starts his best start was first eight times both races at do and Darlington then Riverside Rockingham and Martinsville in the spring and Charlotte in the fall his best finish was first 11 times both races at Rockingham ATL Andover Darlington and Martinsville and tallan the spring then Martinsville then Michigan and Daytona in the summer overall he scored eight polls 11 wins 14 top fives and 14 top 10s finishing 13th in Final Cup Series point standings then in 1974 Nascar Cup series season was a lot like the season prior David Pearson returned to the Wood Brothers Racing number 21 pure ler Mercury to make 19 starts his best start was first 11 times both races at Daytona Talladega and Charlotte then Michigan and Riverside Atlanta and do in the spring his best finish was first seven times both races at Charlotte Darlington both races at Charlotte then Darlington teg in the spring Dayton in the summer than Michigan and Rockingham in the fall overall he scored 11 polls seven wins 15 top fives and 15 top 10 finishing an impressive third in final Nascar Cup Series point standings even though he didn't make 11 starts The Following season in 1975 David Pearson returned to the number 21 Pur later Mercury making 21 starts in the cup series his best start was first seven times both races at Darlington and Charlotte Dober in the spring Michigan in the summer then Ontario in the fall his best finish was first three times at over in the spring Michigan and Pocono in the summer overall he scored seven polls three wins 13 top fives and 14 top 10s finishing 14th in Final Cup Series point standings Pearson returned to the Wood Brothers Racing number 21 pure later Mercury for the 1976 Nascar Cup series season making 22 starts his best start was first eight times at both Darlington and Charlotte races Riverside in the summer then Michigan Rockingham in Ontario in the fall his best finish was first 10 times both races in Riverside Darlington and Michigan Daytona Atlanta and Charlotte in the spring then Ontario in the fall the team won the Triple Crown of NASCAR this is when a team wins the Daytona 500 at Daytona the world 600 at Charlotte and the southern 500 at Darlington all in the same season well overall he scored eight polls 10 wins 16 top fives and 18 top 10s finishing ninth in Final Cup Series point standings after several seasons of success Pearson again returned to the number 21 pure later Mercury making 22 Nascar Cup Series starts once again very competitive his best start was first five times both races at Charlotte and Michigan then at Darlington in the spring his best finish was first twice at Riverside in the spring and then Darlington in the fall overall he scored five polls two wins 16 top fives and 16 top 10 finishing 13th in final Nascar Cup fives and six top 10 a new decade the 1980s and in 1980 the 1980 Nascar Cup series season Neil Bonnet returned to the number 21 pure later Mercury making 22 starts his best start was second three times at Atlanta in the spring then Pocono and Talladega in the summer his best finish was first twice at Pocono and Talladega in the summer overall in 22 starts he scored zero polls two wins 10 top fives and 13 top 10 finishing 19th in Final Cup Series point standings Neil Bonnet returned to the drive the number 21 Ford in 1981 but after nearly 20 years primary sponsor Pur later stopped 21st in Final Cup series points Indie Car Star Bobby Ray Hall made one start in the number 21 forward at the season finale at Riverside finishing 40th two of the most successful racing families formed a bit of a union in 1985 when Kyle Petty signed on to drive for the Wood Brothers except they weren't just going to run 2third of the schedule rather with new sponsorship money from 7-Eleven sitco and chief waterports now they were able to run the full schedule now they have the new sponsorship money now as part of of the company's marketing strategy 7-Eleven asked the team to change the number from 21 to 7 So Cal Petty ran full-time behind the wheel of the number 7 7-Eleven Ford his best start was fourth twice in north wboro and Talladega in the spring and his best finish was second at talad in the spring overall he scored zero polls zero wins seven top fives and 12 top 10s finishing nth in Final Cup Series point standings for 1986 Kyle Petty returned to drive the number 77-eleven start was second at Daytona in the summer and his best finish was Fifth twice at Atlanta North wicksboro in the spring statistically the team had a bit of a Down Season though this would just be the Neil Bonnet returned to drive the wood brother racings number 21 sitco Ford full-time well until he was injured in an accident at Dober in the fall missing three races Tommy Ellis filled in for Bonnet those three three races with a best finish of 16th at North wboro in the fall his best start was third at Talladega in the spring and his best finish was sixth at Rockingham in the fall overall he scored zero polls zero wins zero top fives and 11 top 10 finishing 20th in Final Cup Series point standings another new decade the 1990s in 1990 Neil Bonnet made the first five starts of the season for the team in the number 21 sitco Ford before he was injured in another accident this time at Darlington Raceway his best start was 12th at Richmond in the spring and his best finish was 11th at Daytona in the spring Dale Jarrett got an opportunity the opportunity to take over the number 21 sitco Ford with and injured Bonnet unable to race Jarrett made 24 Cup Series starts with his best start fourth at North wooks on the fall his best finish was fourth in Atlanta in the fall overall he scored zero polls zero wins one top five and seven top 10 finishing 25th in Final Cup series points since Jarrett showed he could drive a race car after taking over for Bonnet 1990 he drove the number 21 sitco Ford full-time in 1991 his best start was fifth in North with wicksboro in the fall and his best finish was his first career victory in the cup series at Michigan in the summer overall he scored zero polls one win three top fives and eight top 10 finishing 17th in Final Cup series points at the conclusion of the Season Jared and the Wood Brothers parted ways Morgan Shepard was signed on to drive the number 21 sitco Ford full-time starting in 1992 his best start was second at Pocono in the spring and his best finish was second twice at Tona in the spring than Watkins Glennon in the summer the team was more competitive this season spending the vast majority inside the top 10 in points overall he scored zero polls zero wins three top fives and 11 top 10s finishing 14th in Final Cup Series point standings that Following season in 1993 Shepard returned to the drive the number 21 sitco Ford full-time once again after a solid season in '92 they improved even more in 93 his best start was third at Richmond in the spring and his best finish was first in Atlanta in the spring overall he scored zero polls one win three top fives and 15 top 10s on his way to finishing seventh and final point point standings in the cup series Wood Brothers Racing remained competitive in 1994 with Shephard returning to drive the number 21o Ford full-time his best start was sixth at Rockingham in the fall and his best finish was second twice at Atlanta in the spring then Charlotte in the fall they spent the entire season inside the top 10 in point standings overall he scored zero polls zero wins nine top fives and 16 top 10 finishes finishing an impressive sixth in final point standings as the level of competition continued to rise Wood Brothers Racing team would slowly begin to fall off yearby year for a little while Morgan Shepard returned for his fourth season with the Wood Brothers Racing number 21 sitco Ford team his best start was third at Pocono in the summer his best finish for second at Lowden in the summer overall he scored zero polls zero wins four top fives and 10 top 10s finishing 11th in his final cup Ser in Final Cup Series point standings at the conclusion of the Season Shephard and the Wood Brothers parted ways a brand new driver for the number 21 sitco Ford team for 1996 Michael walri full-time in the cup series his best start was sixth at Bristol in the spring and his best finish was fifth at Talladega in the spring in the year in the yearly All-Star race at the time held at Charlotte Motor Speedway Walter was able to win the event non points paying but still it was really it's a really special event and it was really incredible overall he scored zero polls zero wins one top five and 11 top 10 finishing a solid 14th in final point standings in 1997 Walter per returned to drive the number 21 sitco Ford fulltime his best start was sixth at sonen fulltime his best start was fourth twice in Michigan and Bristol in the fall his best finish was first at Bristol in the spring meaning that Wood Brothers Racing had found a found Victory Lane in six different decades in the Nascar Cup Series overall he scored zero polls one win two top fives and two top 10 finishing 20th in Final Cup series points along with the sponsor and crew chief in 2002 Elliot Sadler returned to the number 21 Motorcraft forward full-time his best start was second twice at Texas and Charlotte in the spring his best finish was second twice at Daytona and Darlington in the spring overall he scored zero polls zero wins two top fives and seven top TS finishing 23rd and Final Cup series points at the conclusion of the Season Saddler and the Wood Brothers parted ways pole zero wins one top five and three top 10 finishing 24th in Final Cup series points for the 2005 Nascar Cup series season Ricky rud returned for one final full-time season behind the wheel of the N number 21 Motorcraft Ford wood weathers racing his best start was second at Martinsville in the fall and his best finish was second at Sonoma in the summer overall he scored zero polls zero wins two top fives and nine top 10 finishing 21st in Final Cup series points things really changed around for the 06 Cup series season with the addition of new primary sponsor Little Debbie and new driver Ken Trader the number 21 Little Debbie Ford ran full-time in the Nascar Cup Series and also with the addition of new crew chief David Haider his best start was 10th at Martinsville in the fall and his Series team in a partnership with JTG racing building two trucks the number 20 US Air Force Ford John Wood made the first two starts finishing 16th and nth Bobby East made one start and Atlanta finishing 23rd then Marcos Ambrose drove drove the truck for the rest of the season his best start was first in Kentucky in the summer and his best finish was third twice at Kansas in the spring and start Bobby East finished the season for the best finish of 11th at IRP performance-wise the Wood Brothers Racing team had fallen off a cliff 10 Trader made 10 attempts in the spring D and Qing twice then making four more starts in the fall his best start was fourth at Martinsville in the spring and his best finish was 19th also at Martinsville in the spring family member and current team President John Wood made one start at Las Vegas in the spring finishing 29th 1988 Cup Series champion Bill Elliot made 20 starts for the team his best start was seventh as sowman the summer and his best finish was 11th at Michigan in the summer Boris said also made one start at Watkins Glenn finishing 14th as far as the crew chief situation Ernie cop spent some time in the first part of the Season then Michael mcain through the middle and most of the end then Jean N came on in and called the final three races the season for the team the Craftsman Truck Series the number 20 was renumbered to 09 and Stacy Compton and Joey Clinton shared the ride Joey Clinton made 16 starts with the best finish of sixth twice at Daytona in the spring then Atlanta in the fall and then number 21 forward Kelly buers was supposed to make the majority of the starts with Mark Martin making six starts instead after only five starts buyers was moved up to the expend series to replace John Wood as John Wood dropped back down to the Craftsman Truck Series to replace buyers buyers best finish was 10th in Atlanta in the spring and six starts Martin's best finish was third at Bristol in the summer John Wood made 11 starts his best start was first at Homestead in the fall and his best finish was third at Las Vegas in the fall overall the team scored one pole zero wins four top fives and 14 top 10s three different drivers made starts behind the wheel the number 21 Ford in 2008 they DN QED eight times throughout the season with Bill Elliott making 20 starts his best finish was 12th at Homestead in the fall John Wood made three starts in number 21 forward his best finish was third twice at Daytona in the summer then tallad in the fall then Marcus Ambrose made five starts with the best finish of third of Watkins Glenn in the summer overall the team made 28 Cup Series starts scoring zero polls zero wins one top five and one top 10 finishing 40th and Final Cup Series owner points in the Craftsman Truck Series John Wood made 17 starts in the wood brother racings number 21 US Air Force Ford his best finish was 10th twice in Atlanta and Texas in the spring Kevin wood made the other Brothers Racing number 21 Motorcraft Quick Lane tire and auto center Ford his best start was seventh at Texas in the spring and his best finish was 19th twice at Texas in the spring and Michigan in the summer overall he scored three top 20s finishing 43rd and Final Cup Series owner points Ryan blay a Pinsky development driver became the new driver of the number 21 Motorcraft Quick Lane forward for 19 attempts making 16 starts this following a technical Alliance formed with Team Pensky also Jeremy B bins became the crew chief for the his best start was third to Talladega in the spring his beginning of the 2016 Cup series season NASCAR implemented something called the Charter system where if your team has a charter you're guaranteed a starting spot in every race and you get more prize Brothers Racing parted ways due to the fact that Pinsky was moving blany up to the main team Pensky 2018 Paul manard became the new driver of the number 21 Motorcraft Menard's Ford full-time Greg Irwin became the team's new crew chief his best start was first at Chicago in the summer and his best finish was fifth at Michigan in the summer overall he scored one pole zero wins one top five and seven top 10s finishing 19th in Final Cup series points that Following season in 2019 manard returned for one more season to drive the number 21 Motorcraft manard for full-time his best start was second twice at both Las Vegas races the team was rather competitive throughout the season even pointing their way into the playoffs overall he scored one pole zero wins three top fives and 11 top 10 finishing 13th in Final Cup Series point standings for the 202 21 Nascar Cup series season Wood Brothers Racing brought back to benad doto to drive the number 21 motocraft Menard's forward full-time Jonathan Hassler took over as kuchie for the team following race 16 at somoma replacing Greg Irwin his best start was fourth in Michigan in the fall his best finish was fourth at Kansas in the spring then in 2022 with Brothers Racing signed Harrison Burton to drive the number 21 deck Imaging forward full-time Brian Wilson became the team's new crew chief Burton's best start was six at Phoenix in the fall his best finish was third at indianap at the Indianapolis Grand Prix in the summer overall he scored zero polls zero wins one top five and two top 10 finishing 27th in Final Cup Series point standings the next season in 20 23 Burton would return to drive the number 21 Ford again fulltime following race 26 the Daytona Jeremy Bolan took over as the team's crew chief again Burton's best start was third at Daytona in the fall his best finish was sixth at Darlington in the spring overall he scored two top 10 finishing 31st in Final Cup Series point standings the Burton Wood Brothers Union really has yet to Bear much fruit results wise nonetheless the team brought back Burton for one more season in 2024 behind the wheel of the number 21 Dex Imaging forward full-time at this point we are 24 races through the 20124 season and things have not improved at all for the team his best start was 12th at Daytona in the spring and his best finish was 10th at Talladega in the spring so so far in 24 starts he has scored one top 10 the first 24 races of the 2024 season didn't look very promising for young Harrison Burton then came race 25 at Daytona International Raceway after starting 20th and hanging in there all night long and after the wrecks and all Burton was able to come through to score his first career Cup Series victory in his 998th Nascar Cup Series start giving the famed Wood Brothers Racing their number 100 career Cup Series Victory this Victory also means they are in the playoffs now that team was 34th in point standings coming into this race congratulations to everyone and the best of look to the team and to Harrison Burton for the remainder of the season in 2025 Josh Barry is set to take over the number 21 Ford fulltime with Rodney Childers as the team's crew chief in all 56 different drivers have made starts for the Wood Brothers Racing team so in 1748 Nascar Cup Series starts the team has scored 119 polls 99 wins 348 top fives and 577 top 10s with the best points finish of third in 1974 with David Pearson in the Craftsman Truck Series the team scored one pole zero wins two top fives and five top fives and 23 top 10 with the best points finish
