A six year old shot in a drive by. The details on this senseless violence. I'm thrilled to be back with the hard working patriots of the great state of Michigan. Nice day. And I also want to thank Alro Steel CEO Randy Glick. Just met Randy and he's fantastic. The job the family's done, he's done. It's beautiful. And all of the talented workers here at Alro Steel. I hope you're all happy. Are you happy with the company, I think? Yes, sir. I think voting is pretty serious business. But a couple of people thought that they could vote absentee and then vote again in person. Is that a crime? We'll find out. Working for you. Fox two news at five starts now. For the second time in a week, a Detroit child has been hit by a bullet during a drive by shooting. In this latest shooting, the child thankfully suffered only minor injuries after being hit by gunfire in southwest Detroit. Fox Two's Scott Wolchek with more on what we've learned. A six year old boy shot in a drive by just after 130 Thursday morning. Nobody in custody. It happened at this home on Bassett Street in southwest Detroit, riddled with bullet holes. This is the second child hurt in a drive by shooting in Detroit in the past ten days. I have no idea what could be done, but I hope something gets done because it's really sad for the children. Juanita Patterson has lived in this neighborhood for 45 years, she says these crimes are becoming all too common. I'm in the back room back there and I heard a lot of gunshots, but we hear them around here all the time. Detroit police tell us that the six year old boy will recover from his injuries now. Local activists are saying this senseless violence has got to stop. It is not worth it. These kids is innocent. You cannot shoot a gun into a house full of people. Pastor Mo Hardwick is calling upon our communities to talk to our youth about gun violence. His message for anyone thinking about carrying out an act like this one. Pay close attention to what's about to happen, because you got to see each and every last person affiliated with this case. Get caught. Police are looking for tips to help lead to an arrest. You can leave an anonymous tip at one 800. Speak up. I'm sure the Detroit police is doing the best they can. And I pray that they're safe too. In Southwest Detroit, Scott Waliczek, Fox two news. Right now, thousands of homes and businesses all over Metro Detroit are still without power because of Tuesday night's storms. DTE is reporting more than 50,000 customers are still in the dark. Consumers reporting about 21,000 without power. Hundreds of crews were called in from neighboring states to help out. The storm brought hurricane force winds in some areas, toppling trees and power lines. A cooler day today, and that is good news. Weather authority Rich Luterman is here with the forecast, but it didn't start out that way. Rick. Yeah, it was a pretty nice afternoon, that's for sure. But at least it's quiet weather for us. Taryn and 79 degrees here. 80 in Lansing right now. Notice it is warmer down in the southwest corner of the state. And we are going to see warmer numbers for tomorrow. Once again, dealing with high water along the Huron River close to Hamburg in the wake of the active weather we've had the last couple of days. So obviously keep your kids away from those high water spots. How about some live pictures? Mount Clemens? You can see sun and clouds. A little bit of haze out there at 75. We'll get down to 67. It's going to stay on the humid side now. Tomorrow, late in the day and for Friday evening, another round of storms. Certainly possible. The weekend looks very nice, especially Labor Day Monday with daytime highs in the 70s and Taryn. A full check of the seven day coming up in ten. Well, turning now to the race for the white House, former President Donald Trump back in Michigan making some pretty big announcements as he stumps for support. The Republican candidate speaking at a company in a suburb of Lansing. Fox two's Amy Lang joins us now with a look at what he's said so far. Amy. Well you know, it's a battleground state for sure. Taryn the former president was in Detroit on Monday addressing the National Guard convention, and now he's back in Michigan this time to talk about the economy, inflation and manufacturing. I'm here today with a simple message for the American auto worker and for the American worker. Your long economic nightmare will very soon be over. It's going to be over. I'm going to turn it around with your vote. We will defeat Congress. The former president delivering those remarks from Grosse Ile in Potterville. He's been highly critical, as you know, of the Biden-Harris administration and their handling of the economy. He's taking aim at the vice president, his new opponent. Come November. With your vote, we will defeat Comrade Kamala Harris. And we will bring back the American dream. Bigger, better, stronger and just better. Bigger, better. We love the American dream. You don't hear about the American dream. When was the last time you heard? Well, Trump delivering his remarks to a cheering crowd attempting to win over voters in this battleground state. And what is a very tight race? Back to you. Taryn. Yeah, it sure is. All right. Thanks, Amy. On the Democratic side, Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate are campaigning today in the southern state of Georgia. And as the Democratic nominee continues her bus tour in Georgia, she's also taped an interview with CNN's Dana Bash. Now, the interview with Harris and V.P. candidate Governor Tim Walz is the first major television interview of their presidential campaign. The CNN interview is set to air tonight at 9 p.m. And earlier today, the vice president's husband, Doug Emhoff, was in West Michigan today campaigning near Grand Rapids. The second gentleman speaking to supporters at Broad Leaf Brewery in Kentwood. Now, during today's rally, Emhoff talked about how his wife's experience as a former prosecutor and as vice president has made her ready to be the next president. She's ready to do this job. She is ready to be our leader, not just here domestically, but on the world stage. And she is ready. She'll be ready on day one when you elect her as our next president. Emhoff said he has also been pretty busy on the campaign trail, visiting three states today and another tomorrow, as he urges voters to get out to the polls. And that does bring us to our pulse poll today. Do you plan on early voting or absentee for the November 11th November election, or do you plan to do this in person? Scan the code on your screen right now. So far, most of you say you'll vote early or absentee. We'll bring you results later tonight on the pulse at 11:30 p.m. We're learning new information today about allegations double voting happened in Macomb County during the August 6th primary, evidence that at least four people voted by absentee and in person. That evidence was turned over to the state attorney general and the county prosecutor for possible charges. Let's get live to Fox Two's Charlie Langton. He says he has the newest information. Hey, Charlie. All right, so this is amazingly complicated. Let me see if I can break this down for people. In last months of the August primary, allegedly voted twice. What did they do? They voted absentee and then they sent their ballot in. And then on the day of in-person voting, they went to the polling place and they tried to vote in perso. And they did vote, likely in person. Well, the city clerk said, this doesn't seem right. The county clerk said, this doesn't seem right. So they went to the prosecutor, Pete Lucido, to see if these two if these four people actually voted twice and what the prosecutor determined likely happened is that the four people, when they went in person on the day of the vote to vote, the clerks in the city canceled out their absentee ballot. So only one vote counted. But that's still remains. These four people allegedly tried to vote twice. Prosecutors said no crime. So I asked the prosecutor, explain what happened. Here's what he said. So can you vote twice in Macomb County? Not at all. You can vote twice. Only if you spoil your first ballot. And then they give you another ballot showing that you didn't have any intent to use that ballot. But the second ballot. But didn't. The clerk say that these people voted absentee? And then they went and tried to vote in person? That's two votes, right? You can do that. You can go into the clerk's office and say, I'd like my ballot. They're not going to give you your ballot back. What they're going to do is cancel that number on the ballot. They'll give you a new ballot. But there's provisions. Number one, it used to be the old rule that if it went through the tabulator already, you don't get that absentee. You don't get it back. It's done. But in this case here, somebody who has given it to the clerk, it's their policy to go ahead. And if they haven't counted that vote yet, then they can give them back the ballot. No, they can cancel that ballot and give them a new ballot. Few okay, a little complicated. So the bottom line, the general rule is when you vote absentee, that's it. The vote doesn't get counted until the election day. You there is a provision to spoil your ballot, in other words to revote. But that happens nine days before election. Actually, it's ten days before the election itself. I don't want to get too complicated, but two things for a criminal charge pretty much in anything you have to have a crime. And second of all, there's got to be criminal intent. And the prosecutor said these four people did not have any criminal intent. They wanted to recast their vote, try to vote for different people. And that's what happened. No criminal intent. And technically the clerk said, okay, we'll get rid of your absentee vote in person. No big deal. That's what happened. The real problem in Macomb County is not voting twice. It's voting once because the turnout here is only 21%. Really? That's the real problem here. Bottom line, when you vote absentee, that's it. That is the general rule. Roop, I am live in Mount Clemens. I'll send it back to you. Nobody else in town can explain it like you did. Seriously, that was a really interesting explanation and a very clear one. But I just want to make it more clear again so someone can vote absentee before the election and then the day of the election, like they did during the primary, go there and say, hey, I changed my mind. Could you spoil this ballot and then vote again? Yes Well, you're not supposed to do that. You're not supposed supposed to do that. Right So say the answer. I'm going to say the answer is no. But in this case, it looks like the clerks did that. But there was no criminal intent on the part of these four people that say, I'm going to get this, I'm going to vote twice. So you got to have two things. You got to have a crime and you got to have some criminal evil mind. And the prosecutor said, there was a couple of mistakes made. So no criminal intent. Bottom line no. If you vote absentee and you turn it in, you're done. Go home and wait till the next election. Don't try to go back again and vote in person. It's probably not a crime, but it's not right. How about that for an answer? That's a great distinction. It's not the right thing to do, but it's not criminal in this particular case with these four people. Charlie Langton, good work explaining this to us. We'll see you again on our later newscast. You got it. Thank you. Even after the Larry Nassar sex scandal, a new report finds the FBI continues to have failures in investigating reports of child sexual abuse. What the FBI and an attorney for some of Nassar's victims are saying in response. And it is summer, and plenty of people are heading to the pool to beat the heat. But in one community, police are searching for a group of teens suspected of causing some costly trouble. What they're accused of doing and how you can help. This is video. You've got to see a police officer hit on I-94 in Clinton Township. It's concerning. Being on the freeway is very, very dangerous for us. Coming up, how's he doing today? A frightening close call for a Clinton Township police officer who was called to a crash scene early this morning, and that's when someone struck the officer's cruisers. Fox two Lauren Edwards with more on the crash and the aftermath. It's concerning. It's you know, being on the freeway is very, very dangerous for us. This was the scene Wednesday night on I-94 near the Harper exit in Clinton Township. An officer's vehicle was hit during an active police investigation. We were investigating a single car accident, and as such, we needed to slow the road down. We are coordinating the officers back. Several officers were out there trying to attempt to slow traffic down. Clinton Township Lieutenant Michael Marker says they were on the scene around 1130 at night. It was after that that the officer was T-boned. A rearmost officer was blocking the left through lane on an angle. A vehicle was coming in that left through lane was unable to stop due to the wet pavement, and ended up impacting our vehicle, spinning it 180 as well. Lieutenant marker says the officer miraculously walked out on his own. He's doing okay. He's got some minor injuries to his hand, his head bump that he says he suffered a minor injury to his right hand and was treated at a nearby hospital. And he says prior to the crash, they made sure that the officer and investigation were both visible. That area of 94 is unlit. However, we had several police cars out there. I think around 4 or 5 and all with their bright LED lights, so they're kind of hard to miss. Lieutenant marker says that the other driver is okay as well, but he hopes all drivers will proceed with caution when approaching active police scenes. If you see any flashing lights of any variety, just please slow down. It's not going to take long to get past us, and once you're past us, you can then speed right back up. But it's pretty. Pretty. Anxiety filled times when you're in that back, especially in the back there again. He says slow down. Remain alert whenever you're on the road and the officer is expected to be okay. Reporting here in Clinton Township, Lauren Edwards, Fox two news. In Troy, police bust a woman accused of driving drunk at speeds of more than 100 miles an hour. We're told officers pulled over the 22 year old woman just after midnight on northbound 75 by the Big Beaver exit. Police say the woman who appeared intoxicated, failed several sobriety tests. Her breath tests revealed her alcohol level was 0.138%, nearly twice the legal limit. Police arrested the woman, who is now locked up in Troy. And as we approach the holiday weekend, triple A is once again offering toe to go, giving you no excuse to drink and drive. It starts tomorrow night at 6:00 and then runs through 6 a.m. on Tuesday. When you call, the company can send a tow truck to drive you and your vehicle to a safe place within a ten mile radius for free. The number is right there on your screen. And we're told, though, you should only use this service as a last resort. Well, a man convicted on sex trafficking charges learns his punishment during sentencing in Detroit federal court. 45 year old William Summerlin will spend the next 17 years in prison for sex trafficking, maintaining a drug house and a felon in possession of a firearm. Convicted back in 2021, Summerlin pleaded guilty to trafficking three victims during the investigation. The FBI identified 25 women that stayed in Summerlin home performing commercial sex acts at his direction. Prosecutors say Summerlin allegedly gave the women drugs and kept them locked in the basement. Well Clinton Township police are looking for several young suspects wanted in an alleged case of vandalism. According to police, the incident happened at a neighborhood pool last Saturday and these are the teens police need help identifying. They allegedly caused major damage inside of one of the restrooms. Fox two's Charlie Lantern will give us a closer look at the damage tonight at six. Pretty nice day today with sun and clouds. Humidity is still hanging around, but certainly not as hot. Notice our next cold front is out there over the western Great Lakes. It's that cold front that's going to cross our area late in the day tomorrow. And Friday evening especially. Could be bringing some storms that will pack a punch. Let me show you some great live shots from Saint Joseph, Michigan. That is Lake Michigan. Sure looks nice out there. 82 degrees right now. Saint Joseph for US, 79 degrees. Dew points are still near 70, so that's why it's still on the muggy side. Certainly not as hot as the last few days. 80 Jackson, Ann Arbor, 79 Port Huron. There's 80 for Flint and Lapeer. Not a whole lot of breeze. The flow is pretty light from the east. There are those dew points that continue to be elevated. How about 86 in Chicago, 88 in Fort Wayne. Look at Columbus, Ohio, 94 degrees. Watch that next cold front. There it is. And it will be crossing our area for the second half of Friday. There will be some storms along it. This is 6:00 Friday evening. You can see those showers and storms from the thumb right down into Southeast Michigan. Then that whole front sweeps through the area, setting up a great looking holiday weekend. You'll see that coming up in the seven day. There's the bull's eye for severe weather tomorrow from Detroit to Saginaw up into the thumb. And what we're talking about is the chance for some strong storms with gusty winds and heavy downpours for the rest of tonight. It's muggy and quiet, down to 67 tomorrow. How about 90 degrees with humidity? Late day storms. They will last into the evening hours. And then we're setting up for a great stretch. Look at Saturday and Sunday. How about Labor Day? 73 degrees. Much more comfortable. We'll check it again in 20. All right. Thank you so much. Well, do you want to get paid back for things you already spend money on? I would right. Well, now there's an app for that. We'll show you how it can help you save money. And money works. And money works. Good news for home buyers. The average rate on a 30 year mortgage fell and remains at its lowest level in more than a year, according to mortgage buyer Freddie Mac. The rate fell to 3.35%. The last time the average rate was this low is May 11th at 2023. Borrowing costs on 15 year fixed rate mortgages also fell this week to 5.51%, according to analysts. Rates are expected to continue to decline. A mixed day on Wall Street. The Dow climbed 243 points, but the Nasdaq fell 39. The S&P 500 remained unchanged. A big victory for the historic Pen theater, the independent theater now has tax exempt status from the Michigan Tax Tribunal. That means it no longer has to pay property taxes and will receive back payments on taxes. It's made for the past three years. Last August, Fox two told you the owners of the building needed a property tax exemption or it wouldn't have enough money to keep the theater open. Now, the owners can focus on maintaining the building and entertaining the community. Well a new rewards program is working to put more money back in your pocket simply for spending money on your top priorities. And we're talking about things like rent and health care. Fox's Evan Brown has more from Miami. Inflation remains stubbornly high and more Americans are pinching even more pennies. But a new high tech solution is using an old form of rewarding you for trying to save a buck or two. Built is a company focusing on what they call neighborhood reward programs, making sure you're earning miles or bonus points for simply paying your rent or your mortgage. But now they're expanding to another wallet buster. Health care spending built is partnering with Walgreens, giving customers automatic discounts on products through their own flexible spending accounts or through government programs. The problem is that there isn't easy ways today for customers to take advantage of all the savings that they otherwise could have access to. It's easy to use after downloading the built app. Just go Shopping. The app automatically applies available savings with a single tap of your screen, and you don't need a new credit card. Built members can shop using any form of payment linked to their accounts. Most people don't realize it's not just prescriptions. I mean, everyday things like your cough drops, toothpaste, even sunscreen are eligible for these up to 40% savings rate. And the company also plans to expand into other areas, hoping to improve customers experiences and save them more money. That's just a more convenient. It's an aspirational experience and there's value behind it, right? And the Commerce Department says about $4 billion is lost each year to customers who forget they have a flexible spending account or forget how to use it. In Miami, Evan Brown, Fox News. The U.S. Army is pushing back on the Trump campaign over an incident at an event at Arlington National Cemetery. I'm Connor Hansen in New York. I've got the details coming up. And the new Justice Department watchdog report, the FBI is accused of failing to report some child abuse allegations to local law enforcement or social service agencies. This despite the changes that were put in place after the FBI was criticized over the way the sex scandal involving former USA gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar. The review found no evidence the FBI complied with mandatory reporting requirements in about 50% of the cases examined. A lawyer for Larry Nassar's victims said this report makes clear that the FBI is simply not doing its job when it comes to protecting our children from the monsters among us who stalk them. A senior FBI official acknowledged the bureau has made mistakes, but said the vast majority of work has been handled appropriately. In April, the Justice Department announced a $138 million settlement with more than 100 people who accused the FBI of grossly mishandling the allegations against Nassar. A local doctor convicted of diagnosing patients with cancer to make money off their treatment is now fighting for early release. A judge sentenced Doctor Fareed Fatah to 45 years in prison. But ironically, after serving only 11 years, he's complaining about the medical care he's receiving behind bars. Here's Fox Two's Jessica Dupnak. It's something you can't. It's like something in a movie you would never imagine. Patty Hester is one of more than 500 patients falsely diagnosed with cancer and treated by Doctor Fareed Fatah. He altered my bone marrow biopsy, all my results. So no matter what I shared with anybody, I'm sharing something that's not really true. For three years, every week between 2010 and 2013, she underwent painful infusions. She never needed, was constantly, you know, you really need to start focusing on the chemo. And I'm like, no, I'm not going to do that. Many of Fatah's patients did undergo chemotherapy for years. Chemotherapy is like a grenade going off in your body. Angela Schuckett, an oncology nurse, tried to report Fatah in 2010, three years before the feds dismantled his fraudulent health care scheme totaling $34 million. I got in my car and I started crying because I could not believe what I was, what I, what I had just witnessed. The state regulating agency, Lara, found no merit in Angela's complaint, allowing people like Patty to suffer. One of the hardest moments through it all, Patty says, having to tell her son she had cancer when he came back from deployment with the Navy. It was terrible for him and it was kind of like, welcome back to the country. I'm sorry. I'm dying. Fatah pled guilty to health care fraud and sentenced to 45 years in prison. He's in year 11. When he filed a so-called compassionate release request this summer, citing that he is not receiving proper medical treatment behind bars at Williamsburg Prison in South Carolina. Three Fatah sits in a prison. He has food and shelter, and he has treatment. Health care treatment. Oh, gee. What was me? On September 20th, a judge will decide if Fatah gets out 34 years before he's supposed to. A different judge denied a similar request in 2020, and now he wants mercy. When he showed no mercy. And that was Fox News Jessica Dupnack reporting. The victim in that story, Patty tells us her immune system is essentially shot from the treatments. She has to now receive regular infusions, and she's just one of many patients left with lifelong effects. Well, controversy over a shoving incident involving former President Trump's campaign team during an event at the Arlington National Cemetery continues to make headlines. Fox's Connor Hansen has the latest developments. Three years after 13 American soldiers were killed during the withdrawal from Afghanistan, former President Trump attended a ceremony with their families. Trump posted a video to TikTok showing him at a wreath laying ceremony, then standing near the graves in Arlington Cemetery. The campaign is being criticized for filming on the hallowed grounds, where political activity is not allowed. The Army says a cemetery employee was even pushed after confronting a campaign staffer over the rule. The army said, is that an ANC employee who attempted to ensure adherence to the rules of the ANC was pushed aside. An Army spokesperson sai, quote, this incident was unfortunate and it is also unfortunate that the ANC employee and her professionalism has been unfairly attacked. The Trump campaign says they had permission to film and the former president was invited by the families when asked. Trump's running mate JD Vance attempted to turn the issue on vice President Kamala Harris. I think the right person to ask is the Gold Star families who invited Donald Trump and lost a loved one because of Kamala Harris's failed policies. Were they happy to have the president of United States there? And they would say, absolutely. Thank God somebody showed up. They wish Kamala Harris would have showed up and she didn't. The Trump campaign took further criticism after one family of a former Green Beret saw his grave in a Trump photo. The family released a statement saying the sacred graves should be, quote, honored and respected accordingly. The Army says the alleged pushing was reported to police, but the employee decided not to press charges. In New York, Connor Hansen, Fox News. The storms are gone for now, but the mess is still very much impacting us. How long can you hang on to your food when you've lost power? We've got some guidelines for you in Healthworks. The perception of the lions continues to evolve. We'll hear from GM Brad Holmes on what's different. And then it's off to Comerica Park, where the Tigers were battling hard to try and clip the wings of the angels. I'm Woodw Woodriffe. The result from the series finale comes your way next in sports. In Healthworks, like many of you at this point, right now, I do not have power and I do have a freezer full of chicken and other food that I do not want to go to waste. So what are our options? If you're firing up the generator to keep the juice flowing at your house? I know finding power is your top priority, but staying safe should be right up there too. Let's talk food. How long does it last in the fridge or freezer without power, an unopened fridge will keep foods cold for only four hours. A full freezer will hold its temperature for 48 hours, 24 hours if it's half full. If you have a fridge thermometer, check to make sure the fridge isn't above 40 degrees. Anything that gets warmer than 40 needs to be tossed out. Now when it comes to those gas powered portable generators, make sure it's 20ft from your house or a window any gas powered engine can throw off dangerous amounts of carbon monoxide for humans and animals, that can be deadly. That's why you need ventilation. And even with a small generator and a little power, there's probably some dark rooms in your home, so watch out for those fall injuries. You may be able to only generate power to one section of your home. The rest of the house may be dark at night, so just making sure some of those places that you're going to have to go to frequently are well lit, even if you have to use lanterns or flashlights and things like that. So you don't have fall injuries and things as such. Looking ahead, keep an emergency supply kit on hand that's nonperishable food items. You've got your bottled water, maybe some canned goods, protein bars, batteries for flashlights and a cooler that's ready to fill even with ice so that way you can salvage some perishables. That's healthworks. I'm Dina Centofanti. This is Fox two Sports Works, brought to you by your Southeast Michigan Ford dealers. The Tigers, with a six pack of victories under their belt entering Thursday, but could Detroit push that number to seven in the series finale against the LA angels? Let's all go find some matinee fun at Comerica Park. But there was no fun of any kind for Carter Montero in the fifth. Already down one. Nothing. Zach Neto blasted this one into the bullpen in left for a two run homer and a three nothing angels lead. Now the Tigers had a ton of chances to get back in this one. Detroit had runners at the corners in the seventh, but Dillon Dingler grounded out to end that threat. Then in the eighth, the Tigers loaded the bases with two down, Spencer Torkelson at the plate, but he went down on strikes to end the inning. They also got the leadoff man on in the ninth, but then went down one, two, three and all Detroit left ten runners on base and were zero for eight with runners in scoring position. The result an end to Detroit's six game win streak as the ange
