it's hard to believe until last night's ABC News presidential debate kamla Harris and Donald Trump had never actually met before and it was awkward so let's now welcome the candidates to the stage vice president kamla Harris and president Donald Trump Comm Harris have a good toate see you have fun thank you every part of it was slightly uncomfortable from Harris moving toward Center Stage expecting Trump to do the same but realizing he wanted no part of it which maybe made her want it even more then you start to wonder was this simply phase one of a very deliberate Relentless effort to provoke Donald Trump to make him angry Donald Trump was fired by 81 million people I have talked with military leaders and they say you're a disgrace he is dangerous and unfit you talk about extreme she played him like a puppet on a string she wanted to set traps for Donald Trump and he fell for every single trap Harris targeted Trump's insecurities she tried to undermine him even humiliate him it very quickly became the takeaway of the debate globally she very successfully goated him multiple times every single time she would communicate and then she would leave dangling this bait and he would swim up to the bait she has studied him and knows the topics that get under his skin and about 30 minutes in Harris appeared to tap into just the right sore spot to lock Donald Trump into a defensive spiral where he would stay for the rest of the debate I'll show you how if I had to use one word to describe Donald Trump during this debate it would be rattle lackluster fling train wreck if there's one source of almost obsessive irritation for Donald Trump it's his crowd sizes and I'm going to actually do something really unusual and I'm going to invite you to attend one of Donald Trump's rallies cuz it's a really interesting thing to watch you will see during the course of his rallies he talks about fictional characters like Hannibal Lecter he will talk about windmills cause cancer and what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom this comment marked a real turning point in the debate because until this point Trump seemed in control he was the one poking and prodding she's going to My Philosophy now in fact I was going to send her a Maga hat everybody knows what I'm going to do cut taxes very substantially and create a great economy like I did before but when Harris struck at Trump's ego he had to respond he took the bait people start leaving his rallies early she said people start leaving people don't go to her rallies there's no reason to go that people don't leave my rallies we have the biggest rallies the most incredible rallies in the history of politics that's because people want to take their country back the rallies are so personal to him he's always been so proud of how big his rallies are she knows that this is triggering to him you know Trump loves the fact that these folks stand in line all day that they sit there for hours that they listen to him uh talk about whatever is on his mind there's been lots of jokes made about him and the crowd size and how he's focused on it and he just proved that that's something that he he fixates on and she was able to kind of go in further I guess Drive the knife in as it were he became more defensive after that moment and really kind of uh made the debate about him defending himself and really litigating these things that weren't terribly important to voters you know before the debate it was anybody's guess which Donald Trump we were about to see would it be the more measured controlled Trump we saw during his debate with Joe Biden or the more indignant grieved and resentful Trump that we tend to see at as rallies from here on out we saw much more of the latter in Springfield they're eating the dogs the people that came in they're eating the cats they're eating they're eating the pets of the people that live there within minutes of that whole exchange about his rallies Trump launched into these unsubstantiated claims that illegal Haitian immigrants have been killing household pets in order to eat them one of the debate moderators David murer tried to correct the record I just want to clarify here you bring up Springfield Ohio and ABC News did reach out to the city manager there uh he told us there have been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed injured or abused by individuals within the Immigrant Community all I've seen people on television let me just say here this is the people on television say my dog was taken and used for food so maybe he said that and maybe that's a good thing to say for a city manager I'm not taking this from people are telion saying their dog was eaten by the people that went there and pause the video right there because I want you to notice kamla Harris's pained expression almost as if to say you poor man she does this again and again throughout the debate understanding that ridicule may be the sharpest weapon you talk about extreme and Harris was just getting started if you want to really know the inside track on who the former president is if he didn't make it clear already just ask people who have worked with him Harris seemed to know all of the right buttons to push she pointed out those whose allegiance to Trump has shifted his former Secretary of Defense has said the nation the Republic would never survive another Trump term I fired most of those people not not so graciously they did bad things or a bad job I fired them I fired them is a way Trump often tries to regain the upper hand here but even that is something Harris would have an answer for Donald Trump was fired by 81 million people so let's be clear about that and clearly he is having a very difficult time processing that she went on to remind Trump of his mountain of legal troubles well I think this is so rich coming from someone who has been prosecuted for National Security crimes economic crimes election interference has been found liable for sexual assault and his next big court appearance is in November at his own criminal sentencing she attacked Trump's dignity on the world stage I have traveled the world as vice president of United States and world leaders are laughing at Donald Trump and she undermined in Trump the very thing he often values most strength Donald Trump is weak and wrong on National Security and foreign policy these dictators and autocrats are rooting for you to be president again because they're so clear they can manipulate you with flattery and favors all of this produced AV verion of Donald Trump that seemed agitated president Trump as you know the FBI says overall violent crime is actually coming down in this country but excuse me the FBI defraud they were defrauding statements they they didn't include the worst cities they didn't include the cities with the worst crime it was a a fraud I got more votes than any Republican in history by far it's called weaponization never happened in this country they weaponized the justice department vice president Harris in your last run for president weaponized please this is the one that weaponized not me she weaponized I probably took a bullet to the head because of the things that they say about me they talk about democracy I'm a threat to democracy they're the threat to democracy with a fake Russia Russia Russia investigation that went nowhere we have a lot to get to Lindsay I think it was you know the most genuinely emotional reaction I've ever seen from Donald Trump in almost a decade of watching him on the political stage this is just not an experience that he was prepared for now all of this is not to say Trump didn't try to get under Harris's skin too he called her a Marxist said she hated Arabs hates Israel even accused Joe Biden of secretly hating her and you know what I'll give you a little secret he hates her he can't stand her she was setting these traps for him that you know obviously were pre-planned uh she just picked up steam and and the momentum kind of carried her through the 90 minutes looking over at Trump and squinting when he said something that she wanted to you know project is being confusing shaking her head kind of punctuating these moments that were bad for him or nonsensical or extreme she like weaponized very effectively her looks when he said weird things that you know the an audience if it was there would intuitively you know be like what did he just say I think I would say flailing he was um he was not in control uh throughout most of the debate and I think that's the best word to describe it he flailed Within minutes of the debate ending Donald Trump relayed a very different version of events to reporters saying he thought the debate went well but most seem to agree it didn't go as he planned but it basically was three onone and but I thought they were very unfair the moderators everybody did the question now what impact if any does any of this have on the election in November KLA Harris seems to think there's value here she's already asked for a second debate
